I needed some black comfortable causal shoes. I came in with good expectations and I was happy to leave with a good pair of shoes. I settled with the most comfortable pair. The attendant that assisted me was patient while I tried different brands and such. In the end, I was able to find a good pair of shoes for under $40 plus a $5 off coupon for being a member. I had called the store searching for an item and was put on hold for nearly fifteen minutes. Once a sales associate finally answered, he was mumbling and did not seem to have a good understanding of what I was looking for, which was a specific kind of KT tape. I explained that it was a tape, repeated that it was KT tape and said the kind multiple times. He eventually found some items and went on a rant about the varieties they carried, making me feel like I should ask clarifying questions to make sure that he understood. We got on the same page after being on the phone for almost twenty minutes and I asked for them to put it on hold. I drove a half hour to this location to pick it up and upon entering the store and looking at the other options they had before picking up the item, I heard the same associate bad mouthing me. He insulted me and said "the b**** just kept saying k2 tape", "I didn't even know what she was looking for", "what even is this stuff?". I was shocked and offended. I did not confront the associate but he saw me grab the item I had called about and he followed me thru the store, peeking around aisles and items, hiding but watching me. I can only assume that he pieced it together that he had disrespected the customer from the phone. I will absolutely not be returning to this store. Update customer service (customer satisfaction/return policy)! They don't work with you to satisfy their customers, even at corporate higher level management. Although they say there is no time limit for returns, there certainly is (according to corporate mgmt). However, no where in their pamphlet, store, or receipt does it say in writing that you cannot return anything (even new with receipt) once the item is purged from their system (who knows when that is) or it has been several years old. One representative told me that they would not be able to resell old (but unused) items due to parts like shoe glue in my case (Nike shoes). But that goes with anything they sell so that's a poor answer. So buyer beware! Not just this store. All Big 5 locations have the same "lame" misleading return policy under corporate executives. They need to update their policy and customer service big time. And they need to put all the disclaimers etc. on paper especially the receipts. It doesn't help even if you are a loyal customer for several years either. read more

My goddaughter, principal at a high school suddenly called with a request that I run to the Big 5, buy cleats for a student who had none and was at a soccer game and couldn't play. She asked that I spend 50 as she was going to cover the cost for the student. I got to the Big 5 and asked for help as I had no idea what to buy..after hearing my story about the student, the young manager helped me find a pair close to 50...it was 65$. I called and asked...can it be 65? Yes, she said, so I hurried to pay to hurry to get the cleats to the student so he can play! As I am paying, the young manager comes to the register and says "give her my discount." I paid 53$ OUT THE DOOR for the cleats.. What an act of kindness!! What a generous, wise young manager.. I asked one of the employees before deciding to purchase it and she was very informative about the item. Cheap, since I bought it when it was during their one-day sale with an extra coupo. I've shopped here before but first time shopping for shoes. I was looking for some wrestling/ mat shoes for work related training and my coworker advised to check out Big 5. There were only two selections so I tried the cheaper option. I was assisted by Opie who was very knowledgeable with shoes as I was overhearing him with a customer. Once Opie and I engaged in small talk, I noticed he was very passionate about his work especially with his past retail experience. Our interaction made my buying experience easier since I knew nothing about wrestling/ mat shoes. I ended up getting the Nike wrestling shoes. I thought they were more expensive but was not. FYI... Staff was super unhelpful tonight. All standing by front door any discouraged is from looking for Nike socks. Told us their contract with Nike ended...but you have Nike headbands on the wall on display. They didn't want our business so we turned around (we never made it 5 steps into the store). We went to Dick's in the same shopping center and bought $40 worth of Nike socks plus other items. Cheer up your staff, they have bad customer service. read more

Store is very congested. Thankfully they don't have shopping carts because it would be very difficult to maneuver around. Never really busy. Typically 2 staff members on average on the floor at a time; 1 manning the cashier the other doing misc stuff or assisting customers. So it would be difficult to get assistance if the store got busy. Please clone and then promote Opie! He was so helpful and knowledgeable I felt like I had gone back in time when clerks really cared. He listened and offered solid suggestions. Then Opie broke out the metal shoe measurement machine and I knew this was going to be a different experience. He juggled helping us and 4 other families and still managed to give us serious one on one attention. Opie took the time to talk to each of the young shoppers about their sports teams and shook hands at the end of every interaction. Opie really knows his stuff! I left with the proper shoes, socks and racquet for my high school tennis player. Honestly it was a wonderful shopping experience. read more

This place is not very organized like the other Sports Stores around. No fancy golf department with $1000 set of Ping golf clubs. The aisles are crowded and merchandise is stacked high and in some cases hard to reach. But they do have very good deals on all kinds of stuff from shoes, tents, golf stuff and baseball gear. We have always ended up buying here after shopping every where else. Perhaps I like the chaos but I do enjoy shopping here. The staff is always very friendly and never flinches when I ask for a price of something that requires a ladder to get. Never been disappointed here a definite must stop for sports fans. read more

I called this Big 5 location earlier today regarding a tandem kayak I wanted to possibly purchase for my family. Whenever I arrived I spoke with the manager and she said that she would not get the kayak out unless I was going to purchase the kayak. I told her that I wanted to view the item before committing to purchasing. She replied that "it would be a lot of work to get the item out" and she wouldn't recommend I purchase it. I came in to buy water shoes for an upcoming trip to Cancun. My family and I were greeted extremely well and helped out inside the store. Then we had to PAY! We had 3 pairs of water shoes and they aren't really cheap so I simply asked if they had a coupon or any sales going on? The cashier Gabby was visibly upset and told me that any coupon I had used before cannot be used today and that there was nothing she can do to help. I was looking all over town for a particular style of pant that my son needed. I had called every sporting good store from north county, east county and to the south. Finally I located the pants here at Big 5 in Chula Vista. The staff that answered the phone was helpful and quick in locating what I needed. While I wasn't sure exactly what size I needed, she gladly held two sizes for my son to try on. When we arrived the store was buzzing with customers. They offer a wide variety of sporting goods and apparel and luckily for my son, exactly what he was looking for. They only have one fitting room, so there could be a wait. Sorry to have to say it but Fick's Sporting Goods is located right across the parking lot from Big 5 Sports and the only difference is that Fick's Sporting Goods PRICE MATCHES. Which means any item that can be found in any Sporting Goods Store that is lower in price Dick's Sporting Goods WILL MATCH THE PRICE. Today there was no need for Dick's Sporting Goods to MATCH THE PRICE because the same Volleyball that was priced at $36.99 in the Big 5 store was only $29.99 at Dick's Sporting Goods. Needless to say but I will say it, the other $200 worth of items I found at Dick's Sporting Goods would have cost me close to $ 400 at Big 5 Sporting Goods. I really don't understand why Big 5's Management will not PRICE MATCH or at least price their items at a decent price, when they have their competition right across the parking lot. If Big 5 does not do something about this Dick's Sporting Goods will most likely be still in business after Big 5 closes. Big 5 is my go to spot for all outdoor items. From fire arms and ammunition, to shoes. So way such a low rating? Well it is super cramped! Compare to most Big 5s this place is wall to wall stuff! I was truly hoping when Sports Authority closed that Big 5 would have moved to the new location! No such luck. I am still going to shop Big 5 but wish they could figure a way to not be so cluttered. I came in here to see what they offered as far as fishing equipment gos. I really wanna pick up fishing but I'm an inexperienced city kid who needs help so I'm trying to find a place that could walk me through some things and maybe give some advice without making me feel foolish. I walked in here and was greeted by the cashier, I replied "I'm great thanks how are you today?" With no response which usually means she's just complying with her store rules of greeting people as they walk in. I've gone to Big 5 a total of 5 times this past Little League baseball season. Why, do you ask? Because the boy loses his athletic cup somewhere between his mom's and dad's house about 5 times a season. Which means, 13 bucks per cup, and I've spent over 60 bucks just in his protective jock gear. I'm pretty sure Sports Authority is cheaper now that I think about it, and it's in the same shopping center, but the boy likes the selection of baseball bats here better. Go figure. read more

I would never come here to buy Hi-Performance Shoes to go running in, but I will buy shoes for running on the beach because Big 5 sells them at a cheaper price. I purchase New Balance running shoes (even though I wear NIKE gear) at Big 5 Sporting Goods because they are reliable shoes for running on the beach with. What I love about Big 5 is the sales they have for these shoes. I've been around a lot of sporting goods, but nothing comes close to the sale prices of a shoe you don't mind getting all scruffed up like the ones I buy here. These shoes are also good enough to get scruffed up at work (so I don't have to mess up my cool Nike Air Max 2011's) Now don't get me wrong because these (New Balance) are good reliable shoes...but I'm a NIKE guy (though I will on occasion wear UNDER ARMOUR Dri-Fit gear) If you are looking for a great outdoor running shoe that you don't mind getting scruffed up, than I highly recommend buying at Big 5. read more

I returned a bike that I bought 2 weeks ago. Bike frame is bad. David manager walked away while I was trying to explain how I know bike frame was bend. David said in order for me to get money back, bike has to be conditions to resale. David, bike frame is damage, when riding bike pulls to the left. It's not safe, you CAN NOT resale it. I was not able to use credit for other items. I don't want another bike from Big5. David picked a bike around same price range, left on front counter, walk away again and I had to carry to my car. I spend 1 hour chasing after David, I still can't believe this experience. BTW, I bought 2 bikes there. I've been here a few times. Their selection is okay. I bought a pair of boxing gloves here on sale once. However, checking out can be a hassle. For some reason it takes forever to scan people out of here. Also some of their associates aren't the friendliest. Sorta that "I hate my job vibe and I will show it to the customers spending their money here too attitude." I've noticed their associates here tend to be college aged kids. Bad news for them...the economy stinks and this might be the only job you'll have for a minute. Get used to it. I really love this Big 5 because its near to where I live and even though its a lot smaller than Sports Authority, their prices are cheaper. I've been coming to this same store for years now and I like how everything is jammed pack, no room to spare, literally. The customer service is always friendly and knowledgeable on all their products. I've bought wonderful items from here such as: swimming goggles, knifes, heavy bag (punching bag), basketballs, baseballs, hand wrap and much more. I'm always comparing items between Sports Authority and Big 5 and 95% of the time, Big 5 has the same item a lot cheaper. In matter of fact, the same Everlast speed bag is $5 cheaper at Big 5 than other competitors. That reminds me, I need to buy one this week. read more
