Came in looking to buy shoes for my daughter. We waited 15 minutes or so for someone to help. Two employees walked buy intentionally avoiding eye contact. They seemed busy with something. No big deal. I went to the front counter and asked for someone to help. The clerk stated that the two other employees were helping a customer with a ping-ping table. Ok...we waiting another 15-20 minutes and the two walked by several more times without addressing us. After 30 minutes without help, we left. Won't be back. The deals might be ok, but if I can't get anyone to help get stock out of the back, they might as well be closed. Complete waste of my time. read more

I saw another manager sitting there in the middle of the store by a register, just looking at his phone. I went to Big 5 today to get a canopy tent that was on a coupon sale. There were none out, so I asked the cashier. He had a guy look in the back who said they didn't have any. I said I guess I will drive to Oroville, because they didn't know for sure when they would get them in. Another employee overheard me, looked on the computer and said we have some. He went in the back, got one, and carried it to my car for me! I am so thankful to him because I didn't have to drive to Oroville!! I was here a few weeks ago trying on shoes. I have issues with my feet, so I did try on a lot of pairs.The guy was really patient with me and a female employee made some suggestions as to which shoes to try on. Ample parking in the area. Came here to buy some ammunition for my gun. Quickly found the ammo and looked for the 9mm. Found some and the deals here are so much better than ammo in San Jose! Went in to buy some sunglasses. Noticed that literally every pair of sunglasses they sell has a warning that the sunglasses could cause cancer!!! I asked if they thought about buying sunglasses from a manufacturer that made non-cancer producing sunglasses. The store simply responded, " pretty much everything causes cancer nowadays" (or something to that effect.) UNACCEPTABLE ANSWER!!!!! We are all like the analogy of the boiling frog. When it's just expected that shit causes cancer and we're supposed to except that, that's when we as the consumer have failed ourselves. Start demanding that the products we buy not be carcinogenic! Especially sunglasses... Seems like a no brainer! Again these companies are going to keep buying from cancer producing companies because they are the lowest bidder. Let's all make better choices and cause these big stores to either start caring about their customers, or go bankrupt in the process! read more

This Big 5 packs a tremendous variety of products for its size. It has everything you would be looking for at a Sports Authority, just a smaller selection. They have basketballs, baseballs, athletic apparel, some camping gear, frisbees, floatees, everything a Chico State Student would need to fuel non-drinking related out doors fun. Big 5 can be really useful if you're trying to find an outdoor or sporting goods item last minute at a reasonable price. Contrary to opinions of past reviews, I haven't really had bad service here. The service wasn't fast and you did have to ask for it. However, when somebody was assisting you, they did everything asked of them in a timely manner. Came here last weekend to buy sports gloves. There were 3 workers behind the registers talking loudly with only one actually checking people out. Waited in line while the other two workers loudly discussed who was off the next day and why so-and-so can't have it off because they already requested it and blah-blah. One of the workers who I believe was the manager or asst manager paused her conversation only to shortly and rudely respond to a question asked by my boyfriend about price matching before returning to her conversation. I went in there on 08/5/2020 because I got a sale alert on my phone. They had a Coleman brighten sleeping bag for sale 19.99. So, I go in there to buy it. Its nowhere to be found however they did have other bags nicely displayed on hangers. I asked the girl at the counter and she basically blew me off. I'll be frank I am not a fan of Big 5's in general, but this store has clearly listened to those past bad reviews. I always feel welcome when I walk in, and when I need help with a crazy or stupid question the staff is friendly and helpful. I like that they don't hover over you and let you just "look around" but will respond when you want help. Recently when looking for some slippers to fight the winter chill I was taken across the store to some great thick winter socks because they were on sale. I am very happy with both and with the money I saved. Some great deals, a happy, friendly and helpful staff.....Its a good time to drop in...... read more

Just went in for a youth football and there was a line and we asked the lady at the other check stand if she was open and she replied "No, I don't have a till." She gave us so much attitude and didn't even look up or make eye contact with either of us. Then not even a minute later a coworker of hers comes up to open the check stand up that "doesn't have a till." My boyfriend and I were surprised at this because we have yet to have a bad experience at big 5. We both understand that retail is sometimes a daunting task. But you are getting paid to do a job and be pleasant and make customers feel like they want to return to a business... I am not satisfied with our customer service experience. I am going to call the store to ask for her name and file a complaint with corporate as well. I hope this lady decides to change her attitude and be happy she even has a job. read more

About a month ago my husband went in to buy shoes. While looking for his size he came across an empty box. He found another box that was his size and took both boxes up to the front and let them know he found an empty one. At that point they basically accused him of stealing the shoes from the box. They asked him directly if he took them and made him open his jacket to prove it was not hiding anything. This is HORRIBLE customer service towards someone who was trying to do the right thing. We do not shop there anymore and continue to tell this story to everyone so they are aware of the people who work there. read more

What happened to this place? I went about a week ago with one of my sons to get a pair of shoes. They apparently no longer have someone that works in shoes. There was another mom there with kids and she had waited 20 minutes and still could not get assistance, she told me how sick she was of this compared to how the store used to be, she is no longer shopping there and left. Then we waited forever and I had to go ask for assistance which EVENTUALLY happened. The girl that checked us out was totally cold and did not even check to make sure shoe sizes matched or anything. Ok so I thought maybe they are short staffed or whatever. It wasn't like I was not going to come back. However Thursday (May 4th) less than one week later, I came back with another son, to get yet another pair of shoes. ( Three teenage boys= endless shoe purchases) Once again, after 10 minutes of standing in shoes I very politely went to the front and asked "is anyone working in the shoe department "? To which an older gentlemen (I assume was manager on duty) responds with " I only have one person and she is busy " That was the entire response...Super cold. Ok, I can think of numerous ways to handle this better. How about " we are short handed today and will get someone to help you ASAP " and perhaps a smile??? Then finally he came and brought my son a pair of shoes to try on. And never came back...and they were too big. Finally I saw someone I had not talked to and asked for assistance. She started walking to shoes with me saw a different employees and pawned me off on him. He got another pair and....surprise never came back. Guess what people if you are going to have all these shoes in the back you need someone to assist. Customer service used to be great here.. I am afraid it is no more. Every time I leave big 5, I wonder why I went in the first place. Today, I went in with the intention of purchasing a pair of shoes. I walked to the shoe are and saw the employee was "helping" another customer. By helping, I mean he was talking to a former co-worker about his old job compacted to this one. I stood there and waited. The employee looked at me and continued to talk to his friend. Then his friends boyfriend/male companion needed to use the restroom. The employee took the male and showed him to the restroom. The employee came back to the shoe area, looked at me (we made eye contact), and walked away into the back area. Not once did this employee say one word to me or acknowledge that he knew I was there. All I would have asked for is him to say something to the effect of, "hi, I'll be with you in a moment." Customer service is a lost skill in this employee. 1 star because I can't give negative stars. read more

My bf and I went in to get him some work shoes and when we first got in we were bombarded by about 3 different employees. I know they were trying to help, but it's hard to look, when people keep coming up to you asking if you need help. So we just kept saying, "No, we just got here we will let you know if we need anything" So we finally got left alone and were able to look for what we came in for.The worst part was the checking out. The cash register girl Taylor, was not very polite. We waited a few mins, while we watched her put hats on a shelf, she didn't even say, " Ill be with you in a min or even knowledge that we were their waiting to check out. Then when she finally came up to the register, she wasn't smiling or didn't even ask how our experience was. She was snotty and she totally showed that she was having a bad/horrible day, but totally taking it out on the customers. I will not be back in that store. read more
