There was a hole in one of my shoes, and it got pretty bad that I needed to get a new pair. I get emails from Big 5 daily, but never really see anything of interest. That is, until the 4th of July when they emailed coupons for $5 off a purchase of $10+. Since shoes are obviously more than $10, I knew I had to go during the holiday to take advantage of that deal, which was good for that day only. I actually stopped by the traffic circle location in Long Beach first, but they didn't have the shoes that I wanted. Rather than choosing a different pair, I went to this location on the southwest corner of 183rd and Gridley. Though not technically a part of Los Cerritos Center, it's close enough that if you park your car on the east side of the mall, you can simply walk to Big 5, which doesn't have many parking spots directly in front. The store is pretty spacious and should cater to just about any athlete for any sport. Since it was summer, most of the sporting goods were swimming related, but I was here for the shoes, which were all the way in the back of the store. Not only did they have the shoe that I was looking for, but they had it in my size too! There was just one box left, and it was all mine! Well, except the lid was badly deformed. One of the employees walked to the back to offer assistance, and then I asked him if I could get a new shoebox for the shoes that I wanted. He mentioned that for the brand, they don't have that many shoeboxes, and they usually get deformed anyways. However, he did give me permission to switch the lids with another box, and so that's what I did. He also directed me to where the seats were so I could try on the shoes before purchasing. The shoes did fit, but I noticed inside each shoe, there was just a cardboard insert used to retain the shape of the shoe before purchase. There wasn't any crumpled paper inside that I've seen inside other shoes, but oh well. Not a dealbreaker for me. The employee did come by again to ask if the shoes fit, to which I answered affirmatively. Though he was kind of hard to understand, I do appreciate how he was there to offer help when needed. Checkout was a breeze. The cashier scanned the shoebox and then my coupon before completing my transaction and wishing me a good 4th of July. Good visit overall. If they didn't have my shoe size, who knows if they would have had one in the back? The two employees I mentioned in this review were the only two I saw working that afternoon, and if that's the norm here, I can't imagine how they would be able to handle a full house. Even though the Lakewood location is closer to me, I would definitely be willing to make the farther drive next time I need a new pair of shoes. read more

Haven't been at this store for awhile but my previous visits has been somewhat pleasant. However today there was a noticeable lack of customer service & willingness to assist. I had to ask for assistance even though it was not busy. The employee appeared indifferent as if I was wasting his time. There was an obvious lack of enthusiasm among its employees. This store needs to be retrained for customer service starting with the manager. I hope the corporate office is reading this review and do something about it. Kudos! To management! The layout of the store is similar to the other Big 5 stores however this store was clean, it was bright and it didn't smell like a library. We walk in and were immediately greeted by an employee his name was David. Right when we stepped foot in the store he says " What can I help you with today?" We told him what we were looking for, he responded "right over here" very courteous and helpful. He walked us right over to where it was and continued to assist with finding other things we needed. Evidently this employee understands the importance of customer service and how it directly impacts the sales as wells as the profit of that store. Certainly this employee David knows that if you're coming into the store it's because you're buying so he's making sure that you're finding it and buying it from them not Dicks Sporting Goods a few feet away. I was told that these hiking boots I wanted were there,so before I made the trip over from the Buena Park store,I called to confirm. Lately I've been involved in many sports, which has come to me looking for sports equipment. This location is one of two I frequent, this is also the better store, and I'll tell you why. Tennis, camping, target shooting, hiking, and other various sports and activity equipment. I appreciate that the store has a selection, but not overwhelming choices to make. Store is clean and organized. Merchandise is well stocked and arranged neatly, and seems to be kept that way. The manager that helped me was knowledgeable, but acted like she didn't have the time of day to help. Rush rush rush:( Now the ugly. The regional manager should see that employees are motivated and well trained, which they are not. I wanted to buy ammo and the employee didn't know if they were allowed to sell it to me, or if a manager had to, (no, the employee wasn't new to Big 5). Store carries shoes up to about a size 14, but socks 9-12 only, why? I heard 2 men come in and ask for larger socks, that's pretty silly. There aren't many spaces for parking out front, but it seems to be enough? Handicap-there is parking and isles are just wide enough to meet ADA. read more

Located on the outskirts of Cerritos Mall, this Big 5 is pretty darn small. I walked into the store and Ms. Employee managed to give me a little grunt to greet me. I found what I was looking for within 30 seconds. I thought I'd see if they had any Adidas or Nike shorts on sale. I was done in 30 seconds - they had a total of one small circular rack of shorts for men. The clothing section for me was probably smaller than your dining room area. Very very limited selection of items here. It appears that the biggest section is their hunting / camping section. I hastily checked out and Ms. Employeee again grunted a thank you. Every time we go here we have a negative experience and this time we realized if we have to go somewhere else and spend more, it is worth it than continuing to have a terrible outcome. I don't normally come in here because I always get bad customer service. Last night was no different. We had just come from a disappointing Sports Chalet and I needed soccer shoes for my kids. My daughter went up to the front to find someone to help us since there was no one in the back of the store. There were maybe 3 employees in the store that I could tell. She found what appeared to be a manager and told him her size. He brought a different shoe in another style and didn't make mention of it. Kinda rude. I also need a pair for my son and the display fit fine. Before he walked away I said, "While you're here, can I trouble you for the match to this shoe?" He turned around and sighed as if I was inconveniencing him. He asked where I got the shoe from and I said the display which is why I'm asking for the partner. He told me the youth soccer shoes were in a different area. How was I supposed to know that? At least he got the shoes for me. Luckily my daughter's shoe the guy brought fit so we were on our way out until I remembered they needed new shinguards. The selection here is limited, and were pricey for youth sizes. I prefer this location to the one in Lakewood. The store is cleaner and both the employees and fellow shoppers seem friendlier. Parking is better as well. I went in on Father's day, Sunday, and bought three pairs of athletic shoes: Asics, Starter and L.A. Gear, and all three fit very well. For less than $80.00 including taxes (there was a $10 dollar off coupon for purchases over $50.00) I got three pair of great fitting, great looking shoes. read more

However, if you are willing to look, I think that you can get some good deals here. They never seem to have any good airsoft selection but id expect that. I bought my hiking boots here and they have been good. Other than that nothing special just basic sports accessories. This is the worst of all the Big 5, i have only attempted to use this store a few times because i drop my daughter off at work in Artesia. The parking isnt to good, its a shared lot with alot of small businesses. Everytime its the same thing, u enter and no one says a word and theres usually someone right at the register like today, they just dont speak. The walk from the front door to the back of the store where the shoes are located not 1 person asks if they can help or just hello, same thing on the way back to the front. Im usually looking for workout gear and sneakers. They never have a good selection of shoes even tho the Sunday paper says different. They have an ok selection of workout clothes. Getting help in this store is next to impossible. Your best bet, just go next door to the mall, better selection and customer service. read more

Like this Big 5... well, like all Big 5 for their various items they carry. Check your Sunday newspaper & most likely then not, there will be items you need on sale.. I'll get my boxing gears to gym apparels when on sale.. Shoes are always on sale as well. Not necessarily to my liking for shoes but they are cheaper than other sporting stores. I even bought my punching bags fm here. Got a deal for the floor display ! Ammos are most likely on sale at any given day. Although, I get mine fm other Big 5 on Knotts since this one tends to run out.. Let's see.. I even got my driving glove in winter when it's chilly outside.. Michael the store manager does his best to greet everyone person that walks through those doors. He combs the store to make sure each and every patron is not only cared for but satisfied with their purchase. He assists by giving all the specs on the item which helps makes decision making easier. Especially for someone like myself who know absolutely nothing about workout equipment. His staff are supper helpful making sure we are not left standing and looking confused about the items we are looking to purchase. I went there yesterday to look into buying some hiking boots. It wasn't that crowded, in fact there was only one other small family getting shoes for the father. I know nothing about hiking shoes, and it was quite obvious. The sales guy walked in between me and the display wall 4'feet in front of me. Didn't tell me "I'll be right with you ,can someone help you?, do you need help?, give me a minute and I'll be with you, HELLO" I don't expect to be waited on , but at least acknowledged. I looked at him, and nothing. I left. It's true, you get what you pay for. This place is like a Big Lots for sports. The other employees up front were nice though.
