I've been going to this Big 5 ever since I was a kid and teenager, even before the mall got remodeled. It used to be at a different area in The Southbay Pavillion when it used to be called The Carson Mall; and it was a bigger building too! This building that it's in, is wayyyy smaller, but they still have the products you need for sports, shooting, fitness, etc.. It's still always awesome getting their random coupons in the mail. Even if you saw something for sale and you forgot your coupon; the workers here are nice enough to give it to you for the sale price, as long as you're not lying and if the sale's still going on. It's pretty clean and well-organized inside, along with great workers who give their customers full attention. I sure do miss seeing Neelam working at this store! She was super cool and had great customer service! Same with the lady with the reddish hair and glasses, who likes watching wrestling! All in all; this Big 5 gets a BIG 5 STARS from me because it's just phenomenal after so many years; plus... you can't go wrong with the huge parking and the fact that it's in a mall. read more

Last Friday I was looking for assistance with fitted hat measurements since I was planning to buy one online so I needed to see a New Era hat. Google maps showed the closest location that sold them was here. When I found an associate I told her what I needed and after saying they didn't sell New Era, realizing her error she pointed the rack out (which was too high to reach) then walked away. I kept asking as gently as I could to avoid sounding like a Karen, if I could get help with sizes and she handed me off to a gentleman who went and got a ladder. I did find the size I wanted but nobody there could give me the measurements in fractions for my online issue. Customer service needs to feel more like "let me help you till we solve your problem" not "I need to hand you off so I can go back to doing something else." It's not like there was alot of other customers. There were people at the checkout, but the register girl took care of them. The only positive thing was the hat was marked down and I saved a couple of bucks! I get kids these days don't like to work, but at least put some more effort for that paycheck. Especially for us customers that purposely hold back any anger and hostility to make our visit as less stressful as possible for you... because as a former retail person, I totally get it. read more

Wow just went in for some youth football gloves. I gently asked "excuse me are these the only.... BOOM get cut off and the guy said yeah that's it!! With an attitude! Then I finished saying sizes you have! Wow sorry your conversation was better about complaining of other customers rather then try to sell me the gloves! Horrible service! My boots that I bought from here fell apart so I wake up early the next day to get a new pair before I go to work. Once I arrive only the lady at the front counter said hello and I stood in the shoe section for 10 minutes and nobody was to be found except the lady at the counter who was already busy. Waited for 15 minutes and received no help. Now I'm on my way to work with boots that are ready to fall apart any second now. read more

For a sports store they sure don't know the difference between a "wrist wrap" to a "Lifting strap". Only to walk out of the store and do further research in my car that they had the lifting straps in stock. They didn't even bother looking for it on the computer as I asked a question and they responded with : "I'm not sure what that is ... but if it's not there we might not have it" And the store looked like they would hire just about anyone with no knowledge on sports equipment. But with the knowledge to only handle a cash register with a smile. read more

There's a nice guy, didn't get his name but he was working the pm shift and greeting/letting people in. Anyway, super sweet guy who takes pride in what he does. Excellent customer service! The staff is very friendly and more than happy to help. I felt welcomed as soon as I walked in with a nice greeting and personal help finding a style for some new snow boots I was on the lookout for. I enjoyed my time in the store as everything was organized and felt more than comfortable asking questions about certain items. Mayte, I'm assuming from my receipt, was more than helpful and knowledgeable about all the equipment and made my experience here great. Even though it is a somewhat far drive for me I will definitely be back to this location for any of my sporting needs! read more

I rarely shop at Big 5 unless I see shoes I like on sale but my last trip was an unexpected pleasure. My son just left for Chicago during a time of extreme arctic weather so I needed to buy a variety of items he needed to survive a REAL winter. The manager was extremely helpful and took the time to recommend items my son would need and pointed out what he would and wouldn't need. He didn't push unnecessary items or the most expensive ones. He was very honest and helpful in every way. I wish I would have gotten his name but he was working the morning after Christmas 2017. A truly nice guy. Much more helpful than at any other sporting goods store I've been to other than Sports Chalet. The review is based mostly on customer service but the prices are reasonable too, especially ad items. We shop here often for the shoe sales. My husband & I have shoe addictions..we can find really GOOD quality name brand shoes for an awesome deal when they go on sale, which is quite often. Its so bad we have a stockpile of shoes...or horde. Depends whom you ask. Another must for us is diving gear & fishing accessories - they are way less expensive here than the dive shops near the beach cities. Way cheaper, and they go on sale more often opposed to the dive shops 1x a year sales. We also come to renew our fishing & crustacean permits to be able to dive for lobster and deep sea fish. So for us, Big 5 serves its purpose. They're also good for: -Teams sports equipment & uniforms for all ages, we got some baseball or t-ball stuff for my 4yr old nephew -Work out gear, clothes and equipment - yoga mats, dumbells, etc. -Camping & outdoor gear and necessities - tents, lamps, propane stoves, etc. and much more. Other then that..you know....Big 5 is Big 5 - its claustrophobic-y in there. This store is kinda small so its worse then usual. As soon as you walk thru the door BAM!.. merchandise in your face! Barely any room to walk thru between the racks & shelves. I find this true at all locations, though. The staff is pretty low key and laid. Meaning they don't bother if you don't. Seems everything they have to sell is on display and on the sales floor. So basically you will find what you came for.....eventually. No assistance required. If can't find it, you don't need it kinda feel. read more

My girlfriend and I needed chairs for her nieces soccer game. My gf is the let's lay down on a blanket type,me? no I am the let's sit down on a chair type, too old to be laying this huge body on a blanket especially if it's on the floor... Found decent prices and different style of camping outdoor chairs. Staff had to go to their back room and get them. Was in and out within 15 mins. Staff was good. This place is built at the mall but their entrance is facing the parking lot, you can't access this place from inside the mall hallways. read more

This store has excellent service. Aimee greeted me as soon as I walked into the store. I went to the store to purchase a weight bench and weights. They had the weights, but did not have the bench that I wanted. Aimee assisted me by calling several locations to find the bench I was looking for. She was professional, patient, and friendly. Meh. The ads you see in the newspaper are more exciting than what you find at the store. Selection is mediocre but sometimes you can find decent gear on sale. Shoes are very affordable with some recognizable names, but you get what you pay for. Staff at this location are not very helpful but not necessarily the worst ever. When I asked for something specific (emergency blanket), I was told to go to a section and look for it on a rack somewhere. I would have appreciated being led to the item because it took me a good while to find it. Too bad it's the only sporting goods store in my immediate area. The drive into Torrance is worth it for alternatives. read more

This store is much smaller than the ones I've been to. Because of how small it was, if didn't have all the merchandise I was looking for. The employees here were very kind and helpful in finding what I was in need of. They carried on a conversation and were very personal, which I appreciated. I've been here a few times before and the service has been so so. It's hard to find staff for help. This time around, though, was different. My husband and I were supposed to just buy tubes for a bike, but I saw a beach cruiser-like bike for sale for $119 (originally $160). I figured I might as well buy a new bike. There wasn't an employee near me, so I walked to their cashier were I found 2 talking to each other. I asked for help and they quickly withdrew themselves from their conversation. I didn't get a chance to get his name, but he was really nice. I didn't want to assemble the bike myself (seeing that I needed it the next day), so I asked for the display. He told me to make sure all the nuts and bolts were tightened before riding it. read more

Returning wrong stuff bought was easy here... Most of the workers seem nonchalant about you browsing through store. Unless you ask, they leave you be.. Guess if you know what you're looking for, this is good. However, if you need help, you will need to chase down a staff. If you happen to chase down the manager, then you can get pretty good help. Otherwise, you probably will get some run around... (ie, I don't work that dept, you will have to ask.. blah blah) Selections are pretty good here. Just have to time yourself for sale items & you can get pretty good prices. Down side for purchasing ammos here is that they check your ID & have to provide detail... No other Big 5 asks for ID purchasing ammos.. Guess the Carson area is still kinda ghetto.. read more

The customer service was horrible, we called ahead to make they had a product and they said they did. But when we got there they didn't have it. We got in line waited to get helped and waited another 20 minutes. Between the time that we were in line, the items they were holding for us were thrown to the ground. We mentioned that it was our stuff and he said that's fine and left it on the ground. then it turned out that they did not have the item that we had called about. the manager did not seem to care about helping us out in any way. i will never go back there again read more

Ever since I was a kid, I've been going to Big 5. Nothing really changes there. Service was great, shout out to Daniel for helping us.

I went to this Big 5 looking for baseball cleats for my daughter. So I walk in and see 3 employees standing behind the register hanging out talking. I ask the group where the cleats are and they just kind of point over to the aisle. Neither one bothered to help. The customer since is soooo bad. In total there must have been 8 employees and not one was willing to help me. When I finally found what I needed I walk to the register and one of the female employees is eating chips and texting!! the other 2 are loudly chatting and laughing. It took about 2 or 3 mins before I was acknowledged. Everyone was very unprofessional. I dont think I will be back to this specific store. Next time I need something I will drive out of my way to another location. read more

"Manager" Jose very rude, not helpful at all because he is too busy texting on his cell phone instead of assisting customers. Jon and Ambar were helpful and more courteous but when a customer is spending $500 and receives poor treatment from any store employee, then it makes you not want to return and spend your money there. Also sent a complaint to corporate. Now maybe Jose will think twice before sarcastically telling a customer, "Well, have a good day then" after he's asked for the corporate contact information because HE (the "so-called manager Jose) was being unhelpful and rude! read more
