Easy one here. Went in last week to buy a couple items for my wife's bday... no one in the store except for the register person. Grab a couple items totaling around 65 bucks, cashier is very friendly and cool. Turns out the back massager thing I bought was broken ($49.99 listed on the box) and the gloves I grabbed she already had stashed at her gym ($14.99). Didn't really anticipate issues (I should have assumed their items are broken I guess) so the receipt was discarded. Didn't think anything of it since every store ever will give you store credit if you don't have the actual paper receipt. Nope... wife goes to return the gifts for store credit and see if there's anything in there she wants with the 65ish dollars I paid. They give her a gift card with $29.00 on it... called them and apparently if you return anything w/o a receipt the items automatically revert to the LOWEST sale price they've EVER had on that item so #1 the (broken) massager is marked up like crazy and #2 they literally have the items on their floor that show the price point they're currently marked at that particular location. Bought the stuff less than a week ago, main item was broken, zero attempt at customer service... 35 bucks isn't going to ruin anyone but the principal of thing is a killer for me especially considering brick and mortar retail is dying and Big 5 is already fully outclassed by Dicks and wayyy out-convenienced by Amazon. I already felt like I was doing them a favor by not utilizing those other options.... I'll start by saying I am a loyal Big 5 shopper, but I will never return to this location. Myeisha's attitude and customer service is abysmal. Not only did she lie, but also put my life and children's life in danger. When I first called to check their store hours, she said they were currently closed. Not true. Went in to buy some ammo, and Myeisha said my 4 yr old son needed to wait outside, because he didn't have a mask. He's 4. I explained his situation, and she refused to listen. I was not loud or belligerent, and asked to speak to a manager. She refused. While she was asking me to leave my child outside, another woman walked in without a mask and Myeisha said nothing. I brought her attention to it, but instead she decided to call the police- on me. (While on the phone, her mask was completely off, but she was worried about my 4 year old and not the grown woman who walked in maskless) Given the state of which we are in now, she put me and my children's life in danger. You can find some pretty good deals if you keep an eye out for the ads and shop the sales. They are always stocked with name brand active wear and seasonal clothing. I had to write a review after my visit tonight (Saturday). I went to the store on Manzanita at about 7 in the evening. The store had one other customer and two sales people, a blonde woman with long hair and a tall, thin fellow with stringy hair who appeared to be a manager of some sort. When I first arrived, the woman at the counter did not greet me. She looked at me and didn't even crack a smile. I should have gathered at that point that they didn't want my business. I went straight to the tennis shoe area and could hear an employee in the back, but no one came out despite my standing around. The employee door had a reflective window and I could hear someone right on the other side, but whoever was there continued to ignore me. I continued to look around for 30 minutes trying to find soccer shoes and other gear for my daughter. Every time I tried to look for help, the sales people were either on the phone or worse yet talking to a buddy who walked in 15 minutes after we had arrived. They, the two salespeople and their friend, talked about earthworms and were pretty much laughing up a storm the whole time. Must be nice to be paid to talk to your buddies at work. I hope your boss is reading this. I was so fed up I left the store, telling them "Thanks for the help guys." Unfortunately, bad service has become a way of life there. A few weeks ago, I went to buy shoes for my son, and the tall, thin salesperson complained non-stop about his boss to several other employees saying his boss "micromanaged him." I don't know about most people, but if I complained about my boss to my co-workers within earshot of customers and neglected my work, I'd get fired. The sales force needs to be replaced at Big 5 in Manzanita. The store is a mess, the employees do not provide good customer service (they really don't want to be there), and the inventory is small. If you want decent service, better selection and good deals--go to Sports Authority or visit Big 5 on Arden. You won't be disappointed. But you won't need to heed my advice. This location has seemed a little cramped & crowded to me; like 10 pounds of sugar in a 5 pound bag. It is very challenging to navigate a stroller through this store. They just have too much stuff! I went looking for the ladies exercise clothes. The mens was right out next to the aisle but I had to ask someone cuz the ladies was tucked in behind the baseball stuff and next to the under armor clothes. I recently decided to purchase an air pistol. I knew nothing at all about them. I went to Big 5 to buy the pistol. The first person I talked quickly admitted he didn't know anything about them. He said he didn't want me to get the wrong thing, so he called another employee from the back room. The second employee was extremely knowledgeable, told me everything I needed to know to make an informed decision, and steered me to a model that was less expensive than the one I was considering because he knew it would be a better fit for me. They say the bike has a lifetime warranty, and that Big 5 could have easily taken care of this issue and ordered a new wheel for me for free and it would have been over night shipped. I'm leaving a 1 star reviews for big 5 sporting goods stores due to the corporate policy for not helping a customer who is stuck with a product that's not working but purchased driving back and forth 3 times and the corporate won't even help a customer with a simple refund due to their policy. Purchased a case of crossman co2 gas cartridges and 500 pellets. Inserted co2 cartridge into my barely used, used 8 of co2 cartridges in its life time which is fairly new, a crossman brand air pellet gun which was purchased at Big 5 sports good store a few years ago. A brand new crossman 5 of co2 cartridges and one cartridge came empty while the others were good and full. I tested the gun and the gun was working but I was not happy at the fact that one of the co2 cartridges came empty. But the store employee said they don't take used co2 cartridges but I told the employee that one of the cartridges were already empty before I got to use it. So the emoyee exchanged the whole case for me to a different brand, Daisy which I requested to avoid another defect or an empty co2 cartridge. As soon as I tried the first Daisy branded co2 cartridge, the gas started to leak. So, I took the cartridges back again and they were blaming the broken gun this time. As they tested out all the co2 that I purchased, they tested the gun with another co2 cartridge and the gas started to leak too. I was frustrated due to the fact that I was not able to use the 5 co2 cartridges but I came back home with 5 empty co2 cartridges which was paid for but used all 5 co2 cartridges to test at the store. So, I'm a customer who purchased co2 cartridges but the store emptied them out for me to test the gun out. Now, I'm stuck with a broken gun, all empty co2 cartridges due to testing at the store and 500 nonrefundable pellets. Called the corporate to see if I can at least get a refund on a $7 pellets that I'm stuck with. But the answer was a big "NO". So, I never got to use any of the 5 co2 cartridges but tested to empty at the store and I'm stuck with 500 pellets just because I wanted to test it out once. I think I need a refund for the pellets and the co2 cartridges that was never used by me. I'm leaving a 1 star review due to the corporate policy. read more

I called this Big 5 seeking Pink colored sports tape to honor Breast cancer awareness month. The other Big 5 stores in town had sold out of this color. After many calls made to others sporting stores I called this shop and a young lady answered, I asked "Is there pink sports wrapping tape left?" She responded ," there's was plenty." I Being in disbelief that there would be "Plenty of Pink sports wrapping tape." I had to reconfirm, so I asked "you have pink sports wrapping tape, not pre wrap and not medical tape?" She replied in a short and snotty demeanor " Yes we have a lot." As a trusting customer I made my 15+ mile trip to this Big 5. I walked in, a skinny, younger and blonde lady (Nicki) was at the register. There was No greeting from her, she seemed too stuck up to say "hi" to customers anyway. I proceeded to walk to the Breast Cancer section expecting to see "Plenty of Pink sports wrapping tape," none was there. A tall and skinny man with glasses (Jason, asst. manager) approached me and asked if he could help me, I said " Yes, where is your sports wrapping tape?" He guided my husband and I towards the tape in the excercise area. As soon as my husband reached the rack where the sports tape is stocked, my husband laughed and said " there's none." I asked Jason if there were any Pink wrapping tape and he said "no." I explained to this this supposed Assistant manager that I had called before making the 15+mile drive to this store and the young lady who answered assured me that that there was pleanty of Pink sports wrapping tape, he starred at me in silence(No word). He had no remorse for my waisted time, gas and mileage. She said in a air headed manner pointing to the kinesthetic tape saying "isn't that it!" I explained to her that I specificity asked if she was sure that she had sports wrapping tape not medical(kinesthetic) tape and not pre-wrap. Then she asked me "what are you using it for anyway." I'm not here to educate you about the products sold at the store you work at lady." While the non-remorseful assistant manager (Jason) walks behind her saying " she didn't know, she didn't know." Educate your employees Big 5! Beware of employees with no Athletic and sports equipment knowledge and especially a lack of professionalism from Management! read more

I went to this Big 5 location to purchase a shotgun and when I mentioned I was purchasing the shotgun as a birthday present for my spouse the employee told me he would not sell me the gun. The employee told me it would be illegal for him to sell me the gun knowing it is for someone else. This is a ridiculous policy seeing as on the ATF form 4473 on page 4 when providing information regarding section 11a it indicates you may enter yes to this question regarding whether the gun purchase is for yourself if the purchase of the gun is intended as a "bona fide gift" and you are not receiving any money, service, or tangible item in return. Therefore, the employee was wrong in informing me it is illegal to sell me the gun, and should have stated it is against company policy, assuming there really is a company policy indicating this. Its a decent store I have never had any major bad experiences there. There was one time when i tried to purchase some shotgun ammo there and an older man would not let me buy any 3 1/2 inch shotgun shells. He told me i didnt need shells that big. I informed him my shotgun could chamber 3 1/2 inch rounds but he refused to sell them to me, but he did sell me some 2 3/4 00 buck. I wasnt going to make a fuss. Hes the only one i ever had some trouble with everyone else there is cool, friendly and even chatty. First impressions are everything, I come in looking for a backpack, 5 employees standing around, not one other customer in the store. They greet me. Then continue talking. After looking extensively through there selection, I found one. I inquired about an online coupon for 10% off. So we are talking about 4$. They said it didn't exclude the product I was interested in but alas as we start the transaction, it turns out out my item was excluded. I passed on the item. But was really left with the feeling they went out of their way not to make a happy customer but to in fact to turn me away. Weird. Don't customers pay their salary. I work in customer service. Where I work we are empowered to help the customer up to 50$. At our discretion. I'm always blown away when I get seriously lacking customer service. There had to be at least 3 regular employees and looked like a manager and maybe an assistant manager. Waaaay overstuffed lol and subpar effort. I'll shop dicks sporting goods or sports authority. I had purchased two individual firearms this Christmas from this particular Big5 location. Charlie the manager was great and provide excellent customer service. After picking up my firearms, I headed to the shooting range. One of the firearms shot but suddenly stopped firing. I tried everything I could think of from stripping the gun down to calling over the range master but still could not figure out the problem. I immediately called the store and guess who answered, yes, Charlie. I explained my current situation and without hesitation he apologized for the inconvenience and asked me to come in asap in order to exchange my malfunctioning firearm. A day later (today) I went in to handle the paperwork and dealt with the other manager, Randy. Randy and Charlie are cut from the same customer service cloth. Randy was apologetic even though he had no idea of what had happened or was responsible at all for any of my troubles. He even went the extra mile to give me a discount for my troubles. I will recommend this location for any outdoor or sporting item needs as well as drive the extra distance just to give them my business (I live downtown). Big 5 advertised a 12 gauge shotgun for $199.00. I called my local Big 5 in Citrus Heights and they said they did not carry guns, so I called the Carmichael store and spoke to Mike. He said he had one shotgun left and I asked him to hold it until I got there, which he did. I came the same day and completed the extensive paperwork. Near the end of the process I wanted to confirm that I was getting a new shotgun and asked Mike if I was getting a new shotgun in a box; he said he only had the display model. He called around and said no one else had a new shotgun in the area, so I went through with the purchase. After I got home I thought about what had happened and felt somewhat deceived; Mike should have told me on the phone that the only gun he had was the display model and I could have made up my mind before traveling there and spending about an hour completing paperwork. I called to speak to the store manager and I was given Jason who misrepresented himself as the store manager. I told him the story and asked if they would give me a discount because it was not a new gun, it was a display model that probably was handled by many people. Jason had also informed me that Mike should have told me originally on the phone that the only shotgun was the display model. He also said that normally they would discount display models, but they would not do so for guns. When I asked him again if he was the store manager, he admitted that he was not; he was an assistant manager. I asked who was the store manager and he said Mike (he would not provide Mike's last name). I left a message for Mike to call me; he never called back. When I called a few days later to talk to Mike, I was told that he was on vacation. On April 3, 2009, I wrote a complaint on the Big 5 website and asked them to respond by April 10, 2009. They responded by sending me, without my request or acceptance, a 10% discount coupon to use at their stores. Since I ordinarily do not shop at their store, the coupon does me no good and is not acceptable as a resolution to this complaint. I then contacted the Better Business Bureau. Big 5 responded that all of the guns they sell are display models. If that is true, they should put that information in their advertisements and should also tell their customers when they look at their guns. The BBB contacted Big 5 again to see if they would try to resolve this situation, but they got no response. I do not recommend that anyone buy any firearms at this store; they conduct false advertising and provide poor customer service. read more

When I first walked into the store, I was immediately greeted by a very smiley and welcoming young lady, who I later learned was the cashier. I went in looking for a knee brace (I needed one for a torn ACL-an unfortunate incident that occured a few months back). I had no trouble finding the knee brace because I was immediately assisted by an employee who led me straight to the braces. I had a little bit of confusion initially as to exactly what style of brace I should get, but the employee was extremely knowlegable and very quickly straightened out all of my questions and confusion. I also wanted to look at some shoes while I was there, so the employee led me to the footwear section and introduced me to the footwear gentleman--apparently they have a completely seperate employee who specializes in just footwear! This young gentleman was extremely extremely knowlegeable and within about 10 minutes, I had the most comfortable shoes I had ever felt on my feet--for an incredibly low price of 29.99! These are by far the cheapest, but most comfortable pair of shoes that I've ever had and I'm extremely happy with the decision I made to go to big 5--it was definitely a good break from Walmart and other such stores that don't even take the time to measure your foot. All in all, my shopping experience here was fantastic and I finially feel like my feet and leg are getting the attention that they deserve (: read more
