Do not come to Alhambra big Five. Poor customer service , the manager should get fired. The store manager refused a return purchase even with receipt. I told him I'll take a picture of the store and the receipt to leave a bad review. He took a swing at me, tried to grab my phone and threatened to throw my phone on the ground. How dare he tried to attack me? I wish I took a video of his face. This post is already after the fact. I drove to Monterey Park big Five and had no problems with the return at all. Absolutely horrible experience from start to finish. From the moment I walked in it was clear this place doesn't care about customers. Of the two employees working, both were absolute garbage and didn't know what they were doing, and they made it painfully obvious they'd rather be anywhere else than helping people. I asked a simple question and they acted like I was interrupting their entire day. To make matters worse, it was almost **8:30 PM and they were rushing to kick everyone out even though it clearly says online that they're supposed to be open until 9 PM on certain days, yet the staff was already trying to close up shop early and bounce every last person out the door. Shelves were messy, the store was disorganized, and it felt like walking into chaos. The whole atmosphere was uncomfortable and unwelcoming. Register lines moved slowly, and no one seemed to care that people were there to shop. Honestly, it felt like a giant waste of time. This place is horrible. I got a rain check on an item that I wanted cause they didn't have it the first day of the sale that's ridiculous. I was looking for some sneakers and what made the visit 5 stars was Michael's customer service. He has a great attitude, is patient, and very polite. He even went above and beyond by finding my sneakers at another Big 5 location. It's not common to get such amazing customer service nowadays, especially a non high end establishment. Michael deserves a raise or a bonus! Big 5 also has great deals on shoes. We frequently shop here for our athletic needs. I like that this location has ample parking. read more

The good: I had some store credit for Big 5 so I decided to check out this location. The interior looked more updated and more modern than a few of the other locations in SoCal that I've been to. The place was nicely organized. They had a lot of slides (the slippers) in stock compared to a different location I went to. Big 5 is much smaller than Dick's but they offer great sales and it has a nice mom and pop feel despite being a chain. The bad: The cashier told me I'd find knee pads/elbow pads (for rollerblading) on the right but I didn't find any. I searched around everywhere but didn't see any in stock. Since I had these shoes I bought last year for almost $60. I feel its good to my feet. But on January 2022 i bought twice first 9.5M and it hurt top of my left foot and same with 10M. And make my top foot reddish. I should put tissue paper and band aid. Now i'm not buying this brand of shoes. It feel the texture is more hard than the one i have last year is soft. Don't trust anything they tell you at this store. They lie. Especially management. I saw the ping-pong table on sale at big five. I called big five to confirm it was there. I went into the store. It's a half hour drive, and we have a pandemic, so. . . I went there, they told me it wouldn't fit into my jeep, so I said I would come back the next day if I could find someone else to transport it for me. I called back within an hour after leaving. After putting me on hold for 15 minutes, two separate times, so i would definitely be back in the following day, today. I confirmed with Paco that my item would be on hold. Because it's a pandemic, I was concerned that it still be there, because it is very difficult for me to get out of the house and to Alhambra. I called in at 9:45 in the morning m, before they opened, and spoke with Jessica, a manager. She confirmed it was still there, but for Some reason it was not on hold. I told Jessica that I had gone to the app task rabbit to find someone to help me transport it so it was very important to me that would be there when I pick it up. I told her I'd be there by 12:30 PM today. At 12:20 I am at big five, in a very long line for social distancing, and I see my ping-pong table being wheeled out of the store to somebody else's car. When I asked if that was the ping-pong table I had on hold, everybody said we didn't know what I was talking about. Chris, one of the guys wheeling the pingpong table out to some lady's car, was apparently also a manage. He basically told me it was my fault for not paying for the day before. Even though I had spoken with Jessica, Paco Marco, and now Chris, they sold the thing that I had driven all this way to pick up. And then offered me a sub standard indoor model for the same price. It is remarkable to me, that during a pandemic, the customer can make every single effort, and the store will just screw them over anyway. To blame me for the fact that they went ahead and sold something that a manager had put on hold, it's disgusting. Chris went through three different reasons why he thought I should've just paid the day before. I didn't have anyone to pick it up with me, and yet, I put it on hold three separate times and they still sold out anyway. They repeatedly made false representations to me and then tried to sell me on something else. Chris was indifferent to the situation, and Jessica just hid in the back of the store. I am truly in between a good review (thanks to their return policy) or a bad one (the product was abysmally crappy). Bough 2 fishing rods which were seemingly healthy looking. I wasn't going to fish anything crazy so they were going to suffice. These were in the range of $30-40 a rod. After a visit to Castaic Lake and catching one large mouth bass (which I released afterwards due to small size) the rods started to break. The lever on one came off! are you kidding me? and the other one was not locking and kept reversing. Boy. RETURN* I brought the rods back in 2 days and without any questions, they gave me store credit. I should also mention that we were able to get our fishing licenses here too the first day and it was smooth sailing. read more

I always have problems at this big 5. Been here 2-3 times and this will definitely be my last time here. Anytime I try to make an ammunition purchase the managers never want to help. I came in today to purchase my ammo after my background check was approved and as soon as I asked for a manager the front end cashier called the manager and while the manager was on his way to see why he was being called the cashier asked what I needed a manager for and when I said "ammunition" the manager heard, visibly looked upset, scoffed and the cashier shrugged saying, "sorry I didn't know." Meaning- he didn't know the reason and he basically HAD to help w the ammunition purchase. Not to mention I called before I came in and asked for a manager, (since a manager is the only person who could sell ammo to customers) the moment the manager answered and I asked to make an ammunition purchase, he hung up on me. While there, making my purchase another customer came in to purchase a box of ammo. The same front end cashier asked if he needed assistance and I overheard the worker at the front ask the manager IF he wants to help that customer. They just literally don't want to help with ammunition purchases and I don't understand why. They also did not call me to let me know my background went through when they said they would. I completely understand places get busy, but it had been a week since I first came in and typically my background only takes 2-3 days so not calling me to let me know is ridiculous. The manager, Victor most importantly needs to be retrained or let go. Victor is not only unprofessional, rude but sexist as well. His entire staff should also be retrained as they all do a very poor job. I get this is some crappy hourly job but if you're so unhappy here and don't like helping your customers, do yourself a favor and move on. read more

Once you sign up to receive email coupons they keep you up to date on the sales and sometimes it's pretty good stuff so I do think this store deserves 5 stars! read more

Beyond 5 stars! I called looking for a very hard to find rifle. Kenny the manager answered and said they had only one, but there was a waiting list, he'd put me on it. I said yes but didn't expect him to follow through. He called me and said the people before me didn't show up. He scheduled a time for me to come in and he was great when I was there. Here comes the 10 day background check...on the 11th day I called to make sure all was good...Kenny said my background hadn't cleared yet but he'd check daily and call me back. Again he kept his word and called me the next day to let me know my background had cleared. No gun shop has ever been this helpful I swung down there and when I walked in, Kenny greeted me by name (remembering who I was) and once another guy at the gun counter heard my name he said "you're Jason? We have your rifle ready, let's get you set up and out of here." I wish Big 5 sold hand guns and a greater variety of guns in general because I'd buy all my guns from them. He shook his head and scoffed and threw a tantrum when I asked for ammo purchase. They do not give a call back once background has cleared even tho they say they will give you a call. Not sure why all the hate for this place. It's a Big 5 sporting goods, you come here when you need to get a quick replacement for some kind of sporting good because YOU NEED IT NOW! It's not a specialty sports retailer so they won't have all the best high end gear, this is a shop that tries to cover all the bases so it has a little bit of everything and for the most part its going to be lower end and medium grade goods. Everytime I come here, I already know what I'm looking for and lo and behold they almost always have it, I grab it I buy it and I leave a happy customer. This place has all sorts of sporting gear! They have hunting, camping, swimming gear, and so on, so forth. They even have backpacks available for students. I like that in the water sports section, there was a variety of swimsuits. One piece, two piece, reversible one piece... Man, it's just too many to list out. The backpacks section had varieties, too. From rolling backpacks to tie-dyed Jansport backpacks, you name it! However, there is a problem with all this variety. It's a jungle in there! I almost got lost in the varieties of sporting gear! I suggest that they should put the gear in places where people can actually see them instead of having them hidden behind other gear. I thought of this because of experience. You see, I went to Big 5 recently and got distracted by looking at backpacks that were all sorts of colors. After a short while, I got back on track and started to look for what I actually came for: a swimsuit. After a few minutes of looking, I thought it was hopeless. I asked an employee where the swimming gear was. It turns out that the water sports section was sitting near the backpacks that I was looking at a few minutes ago.
