The menu is not so long but anything on there is really good. Bierocks are awesome and my favorite might be the buffalo chicken one. The beer menu is also great and organized in a way I like. I think it's probably my favorite Madison restaurant/bar that doesn't do pizza. There is a very friendly atmosphere there and it's a great place to watch big games. It seems to be operated by a couple very passionate about making the place comfortable and every employee I've seen there is very friendly. read more

Solid beer selection and really cozy atmosphere. Owner is very nice and will help you find something to eat or drink. Caramel apple Bierock is delicious. They have a huge beer selection and super good food. Always very consistent with food quality because the owners mom is in the kitchen. Update both the beer menu and food menu. They have a smaller food menu so maybe in the future a salad and German sausage on a bun would be good. Staff is super friendly and easy to get a drink which isn't always the case around town! First Time to Bierock. Food was great hot and tasty. Mint Julip was very good. Walking distance from home.. It was friendly and welcoming.

Awful the owner was a straight asshole when I asked why no one came to my table to take my order after 15 mins. He yelled at me at the bar saying it's a self order at the bar there are two signs. All he is doing is drinking behind the bar. He is rude arrogant and cocky! I want to leave but I am here with others. Beware of rude service and ppl working behind the bar drinking. I know he owns the place cause he told me while he tried to make me look like a fool because I wasn't aware you had to get a menu and order at the bar! Do not come here! The popcorn was awful I sent it back and still paid. I had a beef and lamb Bierock much rather had a hot pocket. Very bland even with the dipping sauce! In fact I went to subway right after! The apple Bierock was good. The service was awful , everyone that worked there looked stressed and looked like it was unorganized and had no idea what order was going to what table! The ambience was nice except for behind the bar! I'm disappointed that the Northside brought another restaurant that I believe won't last! Habaneros , benventos, and McDonald's are way better choices! I guess my main issue was being so disrespected by a so called owner! You can't get cockney when your new restaurant food is bland, has no flavor and when you just opened! The beer-selection seemed nice. I guess that's why he was more focused on drinking than helping his customers! Sadly disappointed! Especially when I went there a week ago and tried to order a Bierock and they were out of dough. We really enjoyed this place, I like the vibe and they have a great beer selection. I tried the mushroom stroganoff which was delicious! The staff was friendly but still in training. It was a slower afternoon (but steady) and they might have been overstaffed. It felt awkward having three people just stand there (no busy work to do and not really chatting with customers). Then when we wanted to order another drink, we sat for a while with empty glasses until we asked. So the service was a little inconsistent, but that's understandable as they get into the groove. Overall though, we liked this place and will definitely be back! read more

The service has been spectacular every time I have been in. The food is great and the rotating selection of craft beers combine to make this a great dining or bar experience every time! Nothing on the food menu or beer menu has disappointed as of yet. The staff is attentive, friendly, engaging, and not in anyway overbearing. Worth the jaunt across town to the north side or to stop after a Mallards' game, or just cause you are curious what a "Bierock" actually is! For those that don't know, a bierock is kinda like a German version of the pasty (think homemade hot pocket). This is a great place for a tasty craft beer and delicious food. My girlfriend and I loved the gluten-free breakfast bierocks when we came here for brunch. Do keep in mind that the gluten-free dough is a little sweet and might not pair perfectly with all of the different types of bierock. read more

Mom and pop owned, locals who love to show people a good, chill time together with thoughtful tap beer choices and SUPER tasty food. We had the three meat Bierocks, an order of red cabbage slaw, side of stroganoff, pretzel and the bacon wrapped dates...I cannot say anything but positive words about all. Unexpectedly, the bacon wrapped dates were my fave. Likely because the dates are stuffed with a unique, delicious garlic situation that made me not want to share them. Will def go again!!! read more

Welcome to flavortown, population, you, at Bierock. Tried a variety off the menu here, everything is delicious, you can't go wrong with any pick. The prices are very fair, and reasonable. You walk away feeling like you ate a home cooked meal from mom's house. As a bonus, the beer selection is top-notch. Every bite brings complex flavors and a hunger for more! We started with the spiced popcorn (juniper and thyme), truly epic popcorn, it is a must try. Next, the pretzel and cheese sauce. Excellent pretzel, buttery, and the cheese sauce complemented it well. If I wasn't so full, I would have ordered two pretzels. The beef stroganoff was a classic, the mushrooms really pop. The potato wedges are seasoned just right and come with an unique sour cream and onion dipping sauce. The real star of the show is the bierock. We went with the classic and sausage & mushroom. Both of these titans battled for the top spot, with a draw declared in the end. The classic, it's a classic for a reason. You a meat and potatoes kind of guy? This is the meal for you. The crust on these were just right, not too thick, not too thin, with just the right moisture level. Baked on the outside, fluffy on the inside, what more could you want from a crust? The sausage in the classic paired well with the sauerkraut and onion (great balance here, the sauerkraut doesn't overwhelm you). The smoked gouda in the sausage & mushroom made this one stand out. The dipping sauces paired perfectly with each bierock (ketchup is available if you want to go classic with the classic). Words can't describe how good our meal was here. The PB rice krispie was the perfect end to our meal. Looking for one hell of a meal, that will satisfy him and her, a won't break the bank? Go here! Amazing food, awesome music, and great beer! I walked past the "Happy Hour 3-6" sign out front a moment after six, sat down at the bar and, after taking a minute to look at the beer selections, placed an order and asked the bartender if I still made it in time for happy hour. He turned and looked to an older guy with a graying goatee, the owner, who shook his head and smugly told me "No, you're 3 minutes late." Not a good sign for a brand-new establishment located in a non-premium location trying to attract a customer base when at probably 60% of all bars (and probably the more friendly, better sort at that) the owner or manager would have said with a smile "Well..... I'll let you sneak your order in this time." I felt like the owner was giving me unfriendly looks thereafter and he certainly did not try to strike up a conversation with me or act friendly in any way. So after ordering a couple of 5-oz pours of Wisconsin craft brews, I then ordered a sausage/mushroom bierock. What's that you ask? From the menu I gathered that it is essentially the German version of a Cornish pasty, a smaller version of what Teddywedgers used to sell off the Square and was told they are about 5-6" long, 3-4" tall, and maybe 1" thick. So I'm drinking my beers and waiting. Two people were already eating, 2 more got their food about 5 minutes after I sat down, all at the bar and the tables were empty. After about 15 or 20 minutes, as I'm wondering why it's taking so long to get my food when I'm the only person who placed an order, there's a commotion in the kitchen. A woman starts screaming and a guy is defending himself. It was loud and angry and awkward. The goateed owner went up to the kitchen window with his hands behind his back in a contemplative fashion, but said nothing and it got quiet. Then the screaming started again and continued for a while more. It was uncomfortable for customers and altogether unprofessional conduct, but the owner said nothing. I was concerned about the impact on one of the other customers, a developmentally disabled individual who might have become quite upset by all the anger pouring out of the kitchen. About that time another customer came in and placed a carryout order. She and the owner began chatting, apparently knew some people in common from another bar and grill, and the owner started commenting how the moment he first saw one of these people, he just had a bad feeling about her. That struck me as ironic and I wondered if this guy doesn't have similar feelings about lots of people. Fifteen minutes later, a woman with platinum hair brings out the carryout order for the most recently-arrived customer but didn't even look in my direction. That was it for me. I don't like long waits at restaurants but I can be very understanding, having worked at a restaurant in the past, if someone just gives me advanced notice, some sort of explanation, and an apology. But I absolutely hate it and find it completely inexcusable when a restaurant not only makes me wait, but serves someone else first who ordered long after I did. I got up, stated it was ridiculous that they couldn't wait three minutes on happy hour pricing but expected me to wait over half an hour for my food and served other customers first, and said I no longer wanted my food. The silvery-haired woman explained apologetically that they had burned my first bierock (apparently that was why she was screaming) and a new one was almost ready, which she'd give me on the house. After being glared at for 35 minutes by her husband, that was enough. When she saw I was upset, she even offered to comp the beers, but I just paid for them with a decent tip for the pleasant young bartender and left. It utterly amazes me when people open up a restaurant and have no idea whatsoever about customer service. Have they not ever been customers themselves in a restaurant? If the kitchen is slow, give the customer advanced notice and keep him/her updated, to show you care about his/her experience at the restaurant. No matter what, don't be unfriendly or negative. So here's my list of pros and cons for this joint, which I wanted to like and wanted to support for a new restaurant in this neighborhood: PROS: - Good tap beer selection, with about 16 Wisconsin craft beers and 8 other national craft beers. - Smaller, less expensive 5-oz pours are an option. - Seemed to be fair prices, with bierocks priced $5.50 to $7.00, sides $2.50 to $3.50, and plus a cheap option for someone who just wants a bit of munchies with his or her beer - seasoned, buttered popcorn for $3.00. - They have a couple of vegetarian options on their fairly small menu, including an interesting-sounding peanut kimchee tofu bierock. - The female owner, at least, understood they had screwed up and tried belatedly to make me a happy customer. CONS: - Customer service. See above. - Angry and/or unfriendly owners. - Inconsistent beer pricing, as another reviewer commented. read more

Bierock was amazing! I am NOT a fan of pasty/meat pies, but my husband is. These were so good! I had the mushroom and cheese and my husband had the original. So tasty! We also had the potato wedges and the popcorn! I've been thinking of the cheesy paprika popcorn ever since! Can't wait to try the game day Bierock! read more
