Our belated Valentine's Day feast began with a threesome of appetizers: Mussels, their Taco of the Day, and before that a "salsa" that was more like a fruit salad. The "salsa" we ate alone and consisted of chiles, pineapple, and apple chunks. Acid and heat collided with each other abruptly, bluntly, torridly, and made for a potent portent of a grand meal to come. Kay cannot get enough mussels (mine included, hee, hee...), Biba's take on this simple seafood classic only exacerbating her perpetual craving with their daintiness, aroma, and mildly salty flavor. The bivalves in their gleaming ebon shells sat in a lake of white wine, garlic, onion, and peppers that was made roseate by the inclusion of tomatoes. Charred, crunchy slices of bread were on hand to absorb and be softened by the exhilaratingly ambrosial broth after the precious mussels were no more. The 2 tacos that comprised our second small plate were filled with shredded pork, pickled onions, piped-on sour cream, goat cheese (?), and were wrapped in pleasantly rustic maize tortillas that added a grainy contrast to the fibrous, succulent meat. Had I eaten the taco while standing on the sidewalk, I would have needed to take a certain stance in order to avoid the juices that dripped from it like a lacerated prizefighter. Having a brief menu makes choosing a meal simpler. Seeing that plantains play a role in their Pan Roasted Fish made choosing instinctual considering that I'd been dying to try plantains in anything for an excruciatingly long time (blame the television program 'Great Chefs' yet again). Along with the plantains came "rundown rice" and...*ulp* hush puppies. Our tattooed server (show me one that isn't inked these days) gave me two options, "Ahi or Mahi Mahi," he said. It turns out that they only had one helping of Ahi tuna left, so to be accomodating, I picked accordingly. "Thanks bro," he whispered to me prior to a fistbump. "We need to use that up. It's good that we'll be doing that early." And I didn't regret my pick for the Yellowfin was superbly supple, adroitly cooked, sublimely seasoned, divinely dampish, and evanesced inside my mouth like the oceanic filet mignon that it is. The presumably deep fried plantain flaps made for exotic potato chips that would have been glorious with nothing else but a creamy dip to immerse them in. The buttery rice made for a luxurious bed, and a mysterious, spicy black (bean?) smear added a touch of venom to an otherwise subdued yet sophisticated dish. Notice my apprehension towards hush puppies? Yes, I've never been a fan, until now. The hush puppies I'm accustomed to usually don't have much flavor to them and thus are fit for dogs as they were originally intended. Biba's, however, were sweet, crispy planetoid-like fritters of rocky joy. Kay had the Grilled Pork Tenderloin, and I didn't taste enough of it to evaluate it. Deciding what to have for dessert was again, facile. Only two selections were on deck for the evening: Red Velvet Cake and German Chocolate Cake. Kay took one, I took the other, and midway through each, we traded off. The German Chocolate cake was the most shockingly, brazenly wicked I can remember. Not a chocolate cake for the weak-willed, there was no actual "cake" but a mousse or fudge filling of some kind that almost made me cry out for something I rarely partake in; plain, cold milk. If it doesn't sound as if I loved it, bear in mind that rich desserts, chocolate ones in particular, invert value signs for me. If I make it sound evil, then I loved it, and this was villianous. The Red Velvet Cake was appreciatively lighter, had a white chocolate frosting as opposed to one of cream cheese, and evulsed my soul from tawny Teutonic doom. It's peculiar how restaurants I am deterred from going to or put off going to often end up astounding me with their quality. Biba was an ideal, shimmering example of a place that "played hard to get" with my culinary heart only to pilfer it. Book your next romantic meal here and discover not only Latin American cuisine as I did, but also the inherently romantic town of Beaver, PA. As unfair as it is, if Biba was in the East End of Pittsburgh instead of Beaver, they'd probably be up to 100 Yelp reviews by now and would be the "hot" restaurant du jour. Wow, this place is a real gem. My coworker told me about it and I vowed to drag BJ here asap. We stopped by on a Tuesday night. We did not know it, but the nice thing about Tuesday's is that it's Taco Tuesday. Which means that tacos are 1/2 price. We had viewed the menu online, but did not notice that they change it on a regular basis. We were told at the restaurant that they post the daily menu on Facebook, so if you are looking for something in particular, be sure to check before you go. I opted to start with the mixed greens salad with Fuji apples, smokey almonds, goat cheese, and balsamic vinaigrette. The salad was fairly large and very delicious. I really loved the dressing and the creaminess of the cheese. BJ started with the mussels. They were steamed in white wine, garlic, onion, peppers, tomato and served with grilled bread. He thought they were very good. For our meals, I got the chicken tacos and BJ got the grilled pork tenderloin with ginger beer braise, root vegetables and collards. He loved his meal. My tacos were served with sweet and sour tomatillo salsa and queso fresco and served in their house made tortillas. For dessert, we shared the churros with chocolate dipping sauce. So yummy. We both feel this restaurant is an unexpected surprise and worth the trip from Cranberry. read more

Wive's night out and where oh where do we go? Well, this particular night the three of us opted for Biba. Why not? It's BYOB and the menu, although small, looked outstanding. We picked two starters, the brussel sprouts as well as the fried sweet potatoes. The brussel sprouts were simply to die for. The perfect combination of buttery and acidic and crisped perfectly! The potatoes were a slightly different story. The sweet potatoes themselves would have benefited from some extra searing time. They were a bit flaccid. They also read a little sweet for my liking even with the hoison mayo. As for entrees, one in our party ordered the monk fish. It was clearly fresh and prepared well. The remaining members of our small party ordered the Joyce Farms chicken. First and foremost, it needed salt....badly! Unfortunately there was no salt shaker on the table and prep time had been slow. We were quite hungry and had no intention of waiting for our server to return in order to request one. The chicken had an uninviting amount of unrendered fat and skin attached and the spanish rice, although tasty, was undercooked. Overall, my main course was very disappointing and I would not order it again. Would I return to Biba? It's likely. I'd go for some fresh baked bread and some starters with a glass of wine. But to make an evening of it when I'm in the mood for an amazing meal? Probably not. read more

The Cuban sandwich was sooooo good! Steer clear of the grouper, though. I got the grouper, and it tasted like nothing but mushrooms lol. But the service was good, and all the other food everyone got was excellent, so I'll be back to try something else. Oh, and the butter served with the bread is unique/incredible. read more

After reading so many glowing reviews, we decided to check this place out. My husband made reservations for 7 p.m. (Strongly suggest you make reservations.) We were greeted & shown to our table which had a great view of the open kitchen. Our server was friendly & knowledgeable, so we took her suggestion for our appetizer which was delicious. Black beans, chorizo, pickled vegetables, cheese & sour cream served in a big bowl like chili but surrounded by freshly fried tortillas. I chose to have the chicken tacos. They were full of flavor with the right amount of heat. My husband had the pulled pork tacos which were also very good. The fresh guacamole in them complimented the pork nicely. We ended our meal with fried churros. They were served warm with a spicy chocolate sauce. I absolutely loved that added heat in the chocolate. All of that food for less than $35.00 on Taco Tuesday. First visit; nicely decorated quaint restaurant on the Main Street of Beaver. Seating outside. The food is Latin American with several specialty dishes. We had the fish special and enjoyed. BYOB. Our server, Maria, was very helpful, explained the different dishes, and stayed on top of everything. Only small complaint- limited menu and you pay for bread with your meal. Going here feels like having your own personal live-in chef. The food is always fresh. Jason, the owner, prides himself on buying ingredients daily. And it comes through in the flavorful food they server. The menu changes with the seasons and usually consists of 4-7 different small plates a night. I am not a foodie, I just enjoy good food at a comfortable restaurant. Biba is wonderful. I have enjoyed a number of lunches and dinners and will continue to return. The menu is always changing except for the outstanding Cuban sandwich for lunch...which is my favorite. It is not a large place so it can get a bit crowded for dinner but that is a testament to their quality of service, food and atmosphere. I always ask the server what he recommends even though I know it doesn't matter because it is all outstanding. Go...Enjoy! read more

Jason, the owner, has made one of the best restaurants in the Beaver County area! My wife and I eat here more than a few times a month either for lunch or dinner. It is BYOB. Service was terrible! Went to Biba's on a Friday evening with reservations at 7pm. We got seated right away. All four of us ordered appetizers. One person got the pork tacos and then ten minutes later the other three people got their appetizers. I would have thought the waiter would have brought all the appetizers at one time so the person eating the tacos wasn't eating by themselves. The tacos had a good flavor but the pork was a little fatty and the soft shells were barely warm. For some reason the men got served the entrees and desserts before the women. Of course the women got teased about that from their husband's! The salmon was hot and not dry. It was served on a sauce that was cold. Why would you put a hot piece of seafood on a cold sauce! The chicken with sausage had a good flavor but the chicken was dry. The desserts were nothing to write home about. A piece of warm spice cake was very pedestrian....something I could have made at home. The pound cake had a dollop of whipped cream on top with large fresh raspberries. The cake was cold and not fresh or moist and the whipping cream had a slight sour taste to it. It was not good at all! Now what was the worst was the service. By the time we ordered the place was almost empty. We were finished with the appetizers and it took forever for someone to take our dirty plates. Then it took 30 minutes or more to get our entrees and another 15 minutes to get our desserts. It was very noisy even though it was practically empty. I was not impressed with anything at Biba's. Pros: + Speedy, friendly, and unobtrusive service (thanks Maria! ) + Immediately seated (outside upon request) + Knowledgeable about menu (recently changed) and was able to give excellent recommendations + Appetizer was delicious, It was a toasted bread with roasted red peppers, tomatoes, rosemary, and toasted cheese. (Recommendation: plate could have been heated to keep cheese hotter, longer) + I had the pork tacos (2) and have never had a better taco. Just the right amount of heat (spice) that kept me delighted for another bite. + my wife ordered the main pork dish (I unabashedly stole some too) it was cooked just right and had a fantastic polenta & arugula side with pineapple garnish. I'm salivating just writing about it. + Dessert (cake) was an unexpected treat and was another piece done just right. At first I thought I was so full that I was going to burst, but the cake was surprisingly light and flavorful. I have only been here on taco Tuesday and was very impressed. $5 for tacos is a great deal and I found them to be very tasty. I did feel mislead when the waitress said we could get multiple salsas/guac but didn't say that we would be charged for each separately. (We spent almost as much on chips as we did our meal) They also do great desserts. I suggest going when they are having a tasting or a deal so that you can really get your moneys worth. Went back for their regular menu. And was still pleased. read more

When the waiter asked us if we had brought our own beverages to enjoy...I looked at him funny. Then my husband and I remembered we were in a dry town! OOPS. So we had soda. The place was listed as being small plates/tapas style, but they really don't have enough variety in my opinion to be listed as a small plates restaurant. Biba's was quiet for a Friday night so I was surprised at how slow the food was getting to us considering the lack of tables. Service was friendly enough and we thought this was a nice change for Beaver. However, I thought it was a tad overpriced for what we got. Even without alcoholic beverages and no appetizers our tab was over $60. Not at all usual for Northern Virginia/DC area, but for Beaver, Pennsylvania I was surprised. I don't think we'll go back there when we visit. They need to add a few more items on their small plates list for me to consider going back... Just my two cents. read more

My favorite restaurant in Beaver County. You go to Biba for the food, which is prepared to order in a kitchen you can watch. Do not expect fast, pre-prepared meals. Expect a dining experience. Set aside 90 minutes or more and enjoy four courses. The soups are the best I have had, anywhere. They are seasonal, from a saffron-infused corn chowder in fall to a root vegetable in winter. The tacos are not Tex-Mex fare, they are works of art. The seafood dinners are also good, with exquisite touches. Not for everyone, and not for anyone in a hurry. read more

Tonight was the second time that we have eaten at Biba , and quite frankly we were disappointed. The first time was only one month ago . Jason , who is the owner was there and the food and overall experience was really enjoyable. We live approximately one hour away, and we're visiting our younger son who lives locally . We were excited about having that same experience. Unfortunately, our recent experience fell far short of our first visit. The service was lackluster, and the food fell far short. Jason was not there , and the chef du cuisine cooked and presented in a far different manner . We brought this to the service managers attention , and she was very attentive . She seemed very surprised and offered to have the owner contact us . She also adjusted our bill , which we appreciated. I left after the bill was paid before my family , and they reported that the kitchen staff was extremely rude and made derogatory remarks. After the last visit , I was excited about having my whole family drive an hour for an exceptional dining experience. After tonight's experience, I would save them all the trip. read more

My husband and I dine here often, and tonight we had one of our favorite experiences. To start, we scarfed down the tamales and fresh tomato salad, and shared their creative version of egg drop soup with a succulent prawn to boot. All were quite tasty. For the main course, I had the fish tacos which were simply amazing, and my husband thoroughly enjoyed his generously portioned chicken enchilada. We have never been disappointed by any fish dish here. It's always nice to chat with the knowledgeable and friendly staff while enjoying whatever our BYOB was that evening. Hubby and I stopped in for dinner tonight not realizing it was "Taco Tuesday"- the place was packed!! The waitress told us that unfortunately, without a reservation, they were unable to seat us. Bummer. As we were leaving, the owner noticed and a table of 2 that were leaving offered us their seats. The owner was super nice and cleared off the table (that technically isn't even Bibas- but they were using due to rain!) and made sure a waitress took good care of us. The food was awesome- super good tacos with fresh ingredients! More than anything, we appreciate them accommodating us on such a busy night. Very disappointing. My husband, daughter and I decided to try a new restaurant for dinner tonight. We called for reservations and confirmed they could provide a vegetarian option for my daughter which was anything but true. We arrived and ordered guac and chips and Brussel sprouts. The chips were stale and the Brussel sprouts were not edible. When asked about the vegetarian options we were told the soups were with a chicken stock base and she could have a salad or a tortilla with goat cheese, if she liked but that was it. (My daughter does not tolerate cheese.) When we asked for an order of black beans that were a side for another dish we were told that was not available. We opted to take our order of salads and a small plate of scallops as take out so we could leave and find food for our daughter. We returned home to three small salads that were $9 each, 2 scallops and our guac with stale chips. $60 later And 2 hours later on a saturday night, I was pulling together dinner for my husband and daughter Very disappointed. My Grilled Pork Tenderloin was also amazingly tender and full of flavor and came with root veggies and collards. Also good were their hush puppies, German Chocolate Cake, and salsa. We have loved Biba since it opened and have been there many times. However, in March 2017, we had a not so great experience. We were very surprised and disappointed because it is quite pricey and also we had brought visitors with us. We were very excited about the home-baked bread appetizer we ordered. They gave us tons of hot, crusty bread. However, it desperately needed more salt in the dough. Then we had to wait an incredibly long time for our main course. I know it is a small place, but like I said, we had been there many times before and not had an issue. In addition, there were only two other tables of customers there while we were there, and no big groups. My pork chop was extremely overcooked. It was so dry I could barely eat it. The quality of the cut of pork was clearly very high because it still had a lot of flavor, fortunately. Overall I was so disappointed because I can have an overcooked pork chop at anyone's house for free... I love pork and couldn't believe they overcooked such a high quality, expensive piece of meat. Everything else we ordered was delicious - the homemade pasta and the churros. Although I would say the price point was quite high even for chef-made pasta... it's pasta. read more

The food was meh and the service was horrible. Biba is a pretentious place that clearly thinks too much of itself. The worst by far was the creepy waiter who was a real life version of The Comic Book Guy from "The Simpsons." When he wasn't busy ignoring us he exuded an attitude of superiority. Regarding the food, we got guacamole and chips but the chips were burned. We got a crab soup that had shells and devil fingers (the gills) in it. Then the beef taco we were served was raw. So unless you want to be talked down to and served sub par food AVOID Biba. read more

Biba is a fantastic restaurant, and easily cracks the top 5 places to eat in the greater Pittsburgh area and definitely contends for the top spot. The menu is constantly changing, with staple items holding down the familiar, but no less special dishes. What really makes me appreciate Biba is the attentiveness to derail in the creations. For example, the guacamole contains apples and and pomegranate seeds. It's executed so well that you find yourself thinking that the idea of adding these two strong ingredients might be simple. But it's not, which is the beauty of eating here. It's an experience and a dinner mixed into one. I've eaten here several times and have never had a bad meal or experience. Even during its busiest times the service mimics the warmth of the small town in which it resides. In fact, the owner spent about 10 minutes talking to our table once the restaurant had died down around closing. Super friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about what he does on a daily basis.
