BHG is my local Chinese when I don't feel like going into Mishawaka or SB. I've tried a bunch of their items and most are good. There have been a a couple of "off" times but it's pretty consistent. One thing that drives me nuts is they always forget one item or they put in a wrong item so I have to drive back Here's some food I've tried: Sautéed green beans: so tasty Fried rice noodle with pork: tasty but greasy General tso chicken: good when fresh! I called ahead this afternoon to order and pick-up some Egg Drop Soup. Online, their menu states that a large container of Egg Drop Soup with "crunchies" (fried wonton strips) included is $7.98. I asked the woman over the phone if I could please get an extra package of the crunchies with my order. She told me I could, and said my order would be ready within just a few minutes. In the time it took me to drive across the parking lot from Martins, I was there and it was indeed ready. When the woman gave me my total, I was surprised to hear it was $12.80 all together. I looked at her and reminded her of the online pricing, to which she stated "well, you wanted extra crunchies, right?". Being in a hurry, I did not object & just proceeded to pay and be on my way. When I got home, I opened the bag to find my large soup & only 2 bags of crunchies when I should have indeed received three. My fault for not having checked before leaving BHG. Had I of known I would be charged almost $6 for extra crunchies (and STILL be shorted a bag), I'd have just forgone them all together. The soup tasted delicious, but not something I would solely return for. Plus, all of the other reviews regarding order issues seem to ring true that they frequently "forget" items on peoples' orders. Food that we ordered was yummy! We got crispy tofu, Salt and pepper calamari, triple delight, and scallion pancake. We did not realize the crispy tofu was just salt and pepper style like the calamari. Both was good but wish we knew flavors were the same. The triple delight was confusing because I have never gotten it in a white sauce;always a brown sauce. Not sure if they served us seafood delight instead. Tasted ok but not what I expected. The scallion pancake was perfect and reminded me of childhood. Whenever I come back from CA I will come and try again! read more

Maybe it was just an off night but I thought the food was not good at all. Ordered carry out Sweet and Sour Chicken and Shrimp with brown sauce. The chicken and shrimp were both over cooked. Also, whoever packed the sweet and sour didn't put the lid on all the way, so it dumped all over everything in the bag. Wont be back. read more

I try to check out as many Chinese restaurants in the area as I can. We went to this restaurant because we had a 10% off discount, unfortunately we were a day too late. I ordered the basil chicken and my wife ordered the chicken bowl soup. The flavor was fair but the chicken was tough and chewy. The dish overall was lukewarm. The chicken bowl again was fair. Love this place , our go to delivery place since they haven't given up their authentic flavors to suit everyones palates . I've tried a number of dishes and almost always get lucky and get a very interesting , yummy dish with different flavors ! My top few are : West lake soup , creamy chicken corn soup Hot and Spicy fish and chili chicken (dry/yum!) Here is the ever-present turmoil of a Chinese restaurant trying to be "authentic" in a predominantly rural enclave unaccustomed to the unfamiliar. This plight affects only Chinese restaurants so far as I'm aware, as"authentic" Vietnamese or Korean restaurants in our area do not get 1 star reviews for trying to cook a little closer to home. I live in a space where good Chinese food is synonymous with good orange chicken or broccoli beef, and it's ever so apparent to me that BHG deeply resents the fact that it has to offer these things on its menu. That's my only reply to those people claiming the "Classic" section of their menu is bland and uninspired. It is...on purpose I believe, to get you to try something new. I'm sorry if that part of my review is going to hurt BHG, but hopefully you eaters can come to terms with it. It's Chinese name 麻辣香, means "Numb, Spicy, Fragrant" and to most Chinese customers offers some comforting notions to what the restaurant might serve - mainstream popular Sichuan dishes that look red and are dripping with chili oil. The food is prepared fairly safely. All the hallmarks are there - the chili, the oil, the red, but reeled way back to stay within some intangible comfort zone no Chinese restaurant dares tread across in beef and potato country. Bottom line: it's Americanized Sichuan food and it's familiar. If you're looking for really authentic Sichuan food, it does not exist in the area -not even in Chicago (sorry, Tony Hu). What do I have to say about this place? It's the best attempt at inland Chinese in the South Bend area. But it's bogged down by the food politics of its region and held down in that crack by yelp reviewers. Maybe BHG is trying to do too much to appease and not enough to focus on it's now tangential business model. Roast duck is not served at most Sichuan places, so putting it on the menu with "24 hour notice required" tagline in an attempt to actually sell MORE of it is counter intuitive. Take it off. The classic menu? Probably not needed either. A restaurant like this should live and die by its Chinese patrons (and the Caucasian customers they illicit), but it's location in Granger far from IUSB, and ND where most Chinese students are congregated does it no favors. Despite these considerations, BHG is still open (at least for now), implicating it as at least doing the food it WANTS to do, right. If anything, it should be more crude, rough around the edges, and unapologetic. It's the only Chinese restaurant attempting to serve something resembling Chinese here. read more

Food was not authentic, not even close. Food was greasy, unappetizing and cold even though we were the only table. Had to flag down waitress for water and soy sauce. My fiance and I tried roasted duck too many times to count at various places. We usually get duck at argyle when we are in Chicago or at Asia Market in Mishawaka around our home. We wanted to give Chinese Bistro a try but ended up regretting it. We ordered half a duck and it did not taste/look like duck at all! It tasted like it was dried chicken.The top layer of tray was displayed with just 4 pieces of meat and the bottom had more dry meat and bones. I called them to complain about it, but the lady guaranteed that it was duck. She stated that it frozen and 3 days old. I still don't believe her. I am pretty sure it was much older than that because the pieces were really dry. I also ordered their pad thai and it was quite bland. Never again. UPDATE: Two days later the owner of the restaurant actually reached out to me and still guaranteed that they had given us duck the first time. But even though we were not satisfied, they offered me to come in and get a new batch free of charge. This time the duck was the way it should've been the first time we purchased it. The meat was plentiful and juicy/fatty, not dry and brittle before like before. I appreciate them trying make it right, so I added an extra star. read more

Sad to place such a low review but another couple along with my wife and I all had a terrible experience and tried to call and talk with the manager and never got a return phone call. We called in two separate orders for carry out. ETA was 20 minutes, we showed up after 30 and waited for an additional 35 minutes. One of our ordered was ready when we got there but they had the wrong name on it and they were confused, so it was cold since we waited so long for the other order. No offer for discount, no apology. While ordering we asked if the black pepper chicken was breaded and we were told that it was. Another order, we asked for Kung Pao chicken no veggies. When we got the food, the Black pepper wasnt breaded, looked like chicken and broccoli that they just put pepper on top of and the Kung Pao had extra veggies along with veggies that normally aren't in it in the first place. I ordered a Mango smoothie with boba and my wife ordered a avocado Smoothie. Neither were ready when we got there which is probably why we had to wait another 35 minutes. The Boba was frozen, the drinks were only 3/4 full and the avocado was a peach avocado. I explained i ordered avocado and the hostess argued that "we dont have that", we pointed at the menu and she just stared at us. At no point did we get and apology, no willingness to remake the drink even after I asked and after we got the food home and realized more was wrong we called and asked for the manager who was there five minutes prior, we were told she wasn't in. I've been to BHG 3 times now, and have had a great visit each time. They have two menus, one is the American menu (with standard American Chinese fare) and the other is the Chinese menu, which contains traditional dishes and is written in both Chinese and English. I highly recommend asking for the Chinese menu. I first heard about it from the Chinese students at Notre Dame, and they all frequent the place. (Always a good sign!) I really like spicy, Sichuan-style food, and there are many such items on the menu. And they don't automatically assume you can't handle the spice. (So if you can't, be sure to ask them to make it mild.) So far I've had the salt and pepper calamari, the judgment chicken, the dan dan noodles, the poached fish, the Chongching fish with soft tofu, the garlic scallops, and the appetizer sampler. (When you go in a group, it is best to order a bunch of dishes and share, which is how I've tried so much.) I loved everything apart from the dan dan noodles, and the only reason I'm not as fond of them is that they are much different to the way they were prepared at my favorite restaurant in Indy. When you order tea, they bring you a nice china pot, and you have your choice of 5 types of tea. They also serve beer and wine, though I haven't had those. I've had only great servers on my visits. I've read the other reviews, and I think they must have replaced the staff who were providing the bad service. I've never had to wait long for a drink refill, or remind them of my order. They've been quite friendly and accommodating. I highly encourage you to give it a try. If you like authentic food, I know you'll love it. And though I haven't tried the dishes on the American menu, I'm guessing from the quality of my own orders that they will be just as good. The restaurant is stylish, well lit, and very clean. I really only put one star since I have to give one, but our experience was awful. We went in on 5/2/15. From start to finish this was a bad experience. The waitresses fingernails were filthy was the first problem. I had her send the water back twice because there were things floating in the water! The appetizers came out and were poorly fried and greasy but were okay. Then came the main courses which were definitely worthy of gagging. I mean the calamari was just awful it smelled like it was cooked in sweat. Sweat from a very dirty person. My wife ordered a vegetable dish which i'm not sure about and it was super greasy as well. The plating was awfully done and the smoothies we ordered had cardboard in them. Just a total lack of attention to detail. When I informed the waitress that I wasn't interested in paying she huffed and walked away. Then for about ten minutes we didn't see her and I had to ask her again from across the room if we were okay to leave. So they had the nerve after serving terrible food and filthy plating to give my wife and I attitude. DO NOT GO HERE. After reading some of the other reviews it is so weird because my experience is so unlike their's. My experience was horrible enough that I won't even try to go there again. Good luck. read more

I really wanted to like this place since they serve my very picky husband's favorite dish, double pan fried noodles. They prepared it exactly as ordered for carry out and he loved it. I'm willing to try different dishes but really wanted to try their duck. I guess I'm spoiled because my favorite Chinese restaurant in Sacramento (Frank Fat's) serves their duck with hoisin sauce and steamed buns. I ordered the crispy, deboned duck from BHG. It was dry with quite a few bones. It was served with rice. This dish was so dry I could barely choke it down. Seriously BHG, you might want to consider serving some sort of sauce with the duck. We'll probably order from here again because my husband loved his dish but I'll have to try something different. read more

I really think this place deserves a better review. Nice and clean place which offers the best Chinese food in South Bend / Michiana area (yes, this comes from a Chinese guy!) I read other reviews complaining about the service. I certainly feel nothing wrong with the service there. In fact, everyone is very kind and gives me a home-like feeling. Been living in greater NYC area for about 5 years, I'd say this is a rare place to find in Midwest that's so close to one in Flushing. Most Chinese people can't live without good authentic Chinese food, and that's why this place quickly became a go-to place for me and my friends. Don't forget to order the spicy dishes there. They are awesome! Ask for recommendations if you don't know what to order. Quick tip: this is a Szechuan-Style Chinese restaurant, so spicy food is their signature. Got the roast duck and chicken with vegetables (to go). The duck was solid and the chicken and vegetables dish was exactly what it was supposed to be: a simple, fresh preparation with not-too-crisp, not-too-salty vegetables. Every restaurant has their better and worse dishes and I'd say I lucked out finding two very good ones. Being from Southern California, I miss my local Chinese food and BHG did a nice job of not missing it as much today. They have some terrific regional specialties on their menu and I'll be back to check them out. read more

This lovely little restaurant is an overlooked gem. The owner is always there, sometimes waiting on guests herself, and she will recognize you if you go in more than once. The food is delicious- I especially recommend the moo shu pork and the dan dan noodles. They also have bubble fruit smoothies- the kids love them (in fact, the kids always say how much they love this place when we go!). At Chinese New Year, they offer a buffet- which is a feast for sure. Their lunch specials are priced nicely and they have a large menu to choose from, and the service is quick. I see the delivery car coming and going frequently, but I have never and delivery myself. I can wholeheartedly recommend this happy little Chinese restaurant. read more

Our new go to for local takeout. As close to real Chinese as South Bend area is going to get. I'm sure they have items on their menu that get ordered very little but those of us who are willing to try something new and authentic, this is the place. If you are looking for sweet and sour pork, maybe not. I'm impressed that their lamb with cumin was really tasty. Moo shu pork passed the test. Not served with the lazy mans pancake(aka a flour tortilla) but real Chinese style pancakes, thin and just a wrapper for the tasty filling.The pot stickers are not big blobs of dough but thin tasty dumplings. Next I'll have to try the dry chili chicken and the lemon chicken. The hot and sour soup was a bit on the bland side, and the egg rolls while fresh, were rather unremarkable. read more

The owner was very attentive checking to see what I needed and the service was quick, even with a medium filled dining room, plus a larger party. I ordered the mushu pork which once I got home was pleasantly surprised with. Being a vegetarian, it was nice to talk to someone who knew the menu and could make a good recommendation for vegetarians. The lady was very friendly and gave me plenty of options to choose from based off of my diet. I got the yellow curry tofu and it was delicious! I asked for them to add mushrooms and they did so free of charge. The tofu tasted great and had a nice texture. Very flavorful and healthy! I got some veggie egg rolls too and they were big, crispy, and tasty. This is definitely a great restaurant for vegetarians. The prices are decent, but maybe $1 or $2 more than your typical Chinese take out. They give you plenty of food though, so you get what you pay for. This place is a joke. And we should've never thought 3 times was a charm. First time we did delivery - 2 hours later still no dinner. I called and they said they were very busy and it would be another hour (would have been nice for a phone call.) So we decide to pick up instead rather than waiting another hour. My husband gets there and there's only 2 tables with people at them (BUSY). Forgot items from order but it was late and we were hungry. Next time we didn't want to go through a huge wait, so we picked up. Got back home and AGAIN they forgot stuff. I called for a refund on the things I didn't get because last time I paid for items I didn't get. The manager started yelling at the staff while I was on the phone, very unprofessional. They for some reason couldn't find my information and I had to call back for a refund, (my fault I forgot to call back). The 2nd time we said never again, but Valley resturant, which by the way is A plus, was closed so we said alright 3rd time is a charm and we reminded that last time no refund and you forgot items. We tried delivery again, timing wasn't bad but, drum roll...... yup once again forgot items. I laughed out loud screaming idiots. Took 2 hours for delivery- called 2x. When my food was delivered (by the manager)it was ICE COLD and the chicken was slimy due to the length of time I would assume. I immediately called back, I was told the manager would call me. 2 hours later the manager called and said she would give me half off in credit to the restaurant- I was house sitting so this establishment is not close to me, I said that and she offered to void my charge and re charge me for half the bill.
