I have been eating at Ho Ping House on Dixie Way for about 15 years. My past reviews have all been favorable. I still like the food- but the service has REALLY GONE DOWNHILL! Ho Ping House had the same good servers for years. They were polite, friendly and I always tipped. In the last several months they lost their best waitresses and the service has really suffered. Not re-filling the drinks, disappearing for long stretches of time, getting the orders wrong, surely attitude, etc. I spoke to one of the long-time employees about this recently and they seemed to not care, or not believe me. So, I will no longer be spending my money at Ho Ping House and instead will frequent one of the other 50 or 60 restaurants in the area. read more

Stopped in after a Notre Dame football game for some Hot and Sour soup and some of the best pan fried pork dumplings I've ever had! My son had the pork fried rice and an egg roll. Service was good, and I'd recommend going just to try the dumplings read more

The chicken lo mein had no flavor. Even soy sauce couldn't help it. The service however was great. And I liked the inside of the restaurant.

They no longer offer the steamed dumplings, I ordered my meal and asked to upcharge my white rice to fried rice and was told that wasn't possible. I guess if you can only have white rice with the meal, going forward we will only dine at Mandarin house as they are willing to allow you to upcharge and change the rice to fried rice with the meal. Food was lukewarm at best. Service was ok but not stellar by any means. I have given this place three tries since the first of the year and it has been disappointing. Back in the day this was a premier Chinese restaurant that always served hot and flavorful food but that has gone downhill. Disappointed, I have been a very long time customer. My carry out meals are $85 plus. They are now using dehydrated veggies in the fried rice like cheaper restaurants. It's a horrible texture and taste. Laziness at its best! I gave them a second chance after our work group went out to lunch about 4 months ago and I was served rancid pork in my meal. I had my asian co-worker communicate to them that I was severed rancid pork at lunch. They only offered to replace the dish with the same. I wasn't thrilled, but I let it go thinking the cooks just had no clue. I just left with nothing with my local work group. Yesterday I ordered a lot of food for my family and I am less than impressed with the fake carrots and peas in my veggie fried rice. The entire meal was bland and flavorless. Ordered Mongolian beef- terribly cheap and bland, ordered orange chicken- tasted over fried and old, ordered curry chicken- bland. I will only give them credit for the cream cheese Rangoons. The pot stickers totally terrible! I am a trained Asian chef and this was again a pure disappointment and an expensive one at that. read more

Always passed by this restaurant but never actually went in. This is the first time I went to try it. They say us in the booth but recommend a table which they sat us. We ask for cold water and hot water but they didn't understand. So they finally gave us the drink. We know what to order but now waiting for the waitress to take our order. About 20 minutes they finally took our orders. It seems they don't understand English or Chinese. So not sure what dialect. We order BBQ spareribs which has a lot of sauce in the bottom but it is a little tasty and egg rolls which is small but it is not bad. The waitress keep saying it will be here in a second but it was like 45 minutes later. The foods came and it was ok. It taste too bland. The restaurant was little hot they need to turn the ac on. I've dine in a few years ago and the lunch when fresh was so good! I've had takeout here about a year ago and then lunch last year and recently for dinner dining in and it has gotten to be average ever since the first trip. Not sure if the good chefs have left but it's pretty average now. I think I would come for a quick lunch to dine in, but will skip takeout out for dinner since there's no lunch pricing. I didn't care for the hot and sour soup since it wasn't spicy or sour... it was pretty thick and tasted more like a sauce than soup and the egg drop soup was very eggy so both tasted different than what it used to taste there and at other Chinese restaurants. The Mongolian beef and general Tso was just average for takeout but the chicken was pretty good quality- no weird tendons found yet. I do think general Tso will taste better fresh when you dine in! Don't get the mixed drinks... they don't taste like what they are supposed to. I also got items from the authentic menu when I visited again ... we got beef and Chinese broccoli, fish fillet in hot chili soup and also beef chow ho fun. All were okay but missing the seriously good flavor which is in normal Chinese cooking (wok hei). I got to try some other dishes from the regular menu such as shrimp lo mein and Mongolian beef again haha (good but nothing special). The pork gyoza was good and the pork wontons were okay but wish for more meat. Crab Rangoon had a lot of cheese. It's NOT as good as it used to be! My husband ordered the beef chop suey and received very little meat, but a LOT of mushrooms and celery. I ordered beef fried rice and it came out SO PALE looking and very unappetizing! I questioned the waitress about my entree and she suggested adding soy sauce to make it look "more fried". She said it was just "steamed rice with meat". They didn't attempt to prepare the entree properly. I wanted "fried rice", but didn't receive what I ordered. We've noticed that this restaurant doesn't do the business they used to. I think more and more customers are becoming dissatisfied and going else where for "GOOD" chinese food. Wow! I took a chance on this place one day for lunch and was blown away at how delicious it was! I had sweet and sour chicken, it was so crispy on the outside and really tender chicken on the inside. The sauce was perfectly made with the sweet and sauce taste you expect. The lunch special came with choice of soup, I chose egg drop and it was delicious! It also came with a very light crispy vegetable egg roll that I wish I had like several more of lol. The portion was very good size for lunch, it made great leftovers I have brought my daughter her several times now for lunch dates and she loves it too! Authentic touch-we ask for jasmine tea and it's a very nice add on to our lunch date with a pot of wonderful hot tea to share. I would recommend this place anytime! read more

Huge portions and quick service. We ordered General Tso Chicken, Almond Chicken, and an all veggie dish. All were excellent.

We ate for the first time at this restaurant and with the ratings at 4 stars I honestly expected better. The food was bland, the white rice was mushy, and the service was terrible. Our server was incredibly rude and did not seem to understand English. Could not let us know what soft drinks were available. One of us like to drink warm water and we did not get that and when we asked about it we got a blank stare, then we asked for hot tea instead...that never showed up. There was literally no service except that the food was brought to our table. She never checked in with us, did not pick up any of the empty plates so all our plates from the appetizers just remained at the table and we had to maneuver around them. Not once were our drinks refilled. We were still just getting started with the entrees and she plopped down the check and asked us if we needed boxes. I don't understand how this can garner 4 stars. Probably as Americanized as Chinese food can get -- but pretty standard flavors that you can find in college towns across America. On the plus side, the decor is very nice, restaurant is large, parking is plentiful, cooking is fast, service is friendly, prices are good, bathrooms are clean, and portion size is generous. On the negative side, this is pretty much as far from authentic Chinese as you can get and the ingredient quality is not the greatest (but appropriate for the prices charged). Though the food isn't really memorable and lacks any real complexity, I can understand how these flavors and the dining experience here can appeal to the local audience. For that, it's bumped up to 4 stars because it can feed people well, for an very appealing price, in a pleasant setting. Here are my thoughts on the items I tried: Egg drop soup: Strong on egg flavor, a bit thin on consistency but served hot and wasn't too salty. Hot and sour soup: Also a bit thin on consistency, simple flavors without a lot of extra vegetables and other elements. Slightly hot but not really sour. Wonton soup: Wonton is alright, with a tasty pork filling. Soup is very generic but works well as most of the flavor comes from the wonton. Ho ping lo mein: Lots of shrimp with a generous portion of noodles and veggies. Sauce has a nice light flavor. Chicken with cashew nuts: Very generous portion of cashews with tender chicken. Not much roast or sear flavor in this dish, but it was still enjoyable. Pepper steak: Steak was very tender, there was a nice sweetness from the green pepper. Pork chop suey: Not too salty, I was a bit surprised that they used BBQ pork instead of slices of lean pork but it worked already. General Tso's Chicken: Slightly crisp chicken in a slightly sweet but not spicy sauce. Didn't get umami from deep fried batter or seared sauce like most preparations I see, but I didn't dislike this version either Mongolian Beef: Tender beef with a good helping of hoisin sauce. Fried rice: Very plain, lacks wok hay from searing egg or being sauteed in a well seasoned wok. But, the rice was a bit more moist than expected. Overall, flavors are simple but enjoyable. The restaurant is in a plaza that is a bit run down. Some would even say sketchy. Don't let that stop you from going in. We almost did. The service was fast, and the food was tasty. Trying to find a good Chinese restaurant in South Bend is hard. Most are tied in with Asian or Thai or Vietnamese. The food was good but not great. Not in the same league as what you would find in china town in New York Chicago or some other major city. However, for SB it wasn't bad but did leave you lacking. The egg rolls and soup were basic fare. Nourishing but not delicious. The jumbo shrimp had more fried bread crumbs than actual shrimp. It was also interesting that the duck sauce seemed watered down with little taste. The shrimp and chicken did have some flavor. You could taste the chicken bites but the shrimp was tasteless. Found this place by accident. We are not stranger to South bend or Notre Dame but have not stopped by this route for quite few years. Was heading to Ohio and arrived here for a quick dinner. Very happy to see a decent Chinese place right off the exit. Food was great and not greasy type. We got fish fillet with broccoli, salt and pepper squid, and a great veggie.
