We've been getting food from Oriental Express since 2005 and we have watched quality go down and prices go up since our first visit. We always got house lo mein and it was typically loaded with beef, pork, chicken, and shrimp. Now the noodles are as thick as night crawlers and meat is almost non existent. The battered chicken dishes used to be tender and crispy now the last three orders have been tough and chewy. The crazy thing is, I honestly don't even like Chinese food, but for some reason, none of the Thai places around here carry Crab Rangoon, which I'm not sure is actually even Thai. The crab rangoons look home made, freshly made and they are HUGE! Holy cow I could make a meal out of the crab rangoon all by itself. I think it was the best crab rangoon I've ever had. It is a bit thicker than normal made with the thicker egg roll type dough, I feel, but it was very good, hit the spot for me. I got the beef and broccoli and was so full from the crab rangoon that I had enough leftover for another lunch. There's just something about Chinese where it tastes better the next day you know? They have an amazing gentleman who takes phone orders and runs the cash register! He is helpful, friendly and a great communicator. I have struggled to find an entree that I love here but I kept trying because my kids like the beef and broccoli combo. The pork egg rolls and rangoon are consistently solid. I absolutely love this place. They don't scrimp out on the meats when you order Chicken Fried Rice or Chicken Lo Mein. You always get a hearty amount of food for a good price. The sweet and sour chicken is amazing, they give you a lot of the red sauce which I use on other tid bits around the house for a snack. The General Tso and Orange Chicken are also great, they don't soak them in sauce but they don't keep them dry either. The perfect amount. This has been my go to Chinese Take Out for a while, but they lack consistency. It's often good, but today it was exceptionally poor. Fortune cookies were so stale they were rubbery, and the oil temperature must have been incorrect because nothing was fried well. Rangoons and Sweet and Sour Chicken (the breading) were extremely chewy. My egg roll was slightly crispy on the outside, but there was raw wonton inside. It was inedible. This is hands-down the best Pork Egg Foo Yung in the Michiana area. Believe me, I have sought out great egg foo yung. It's so healthy. Vegetables & egg & bbq pork bits with a rich pork gravy. I recommend the entree, because you get 3 patties. They fry at such a high heat, there is no greasy taste. It seals in the flavor. The second thing to try is the large won ton soup .Generous number of pork won tons and authentic stock broth. Get home and add a splash of San-J brand Tamari... authentic soy sauce and Kadoya authentic sesame oil, and this soup is amazing . If you have green onions on hand, dice a few to throw in. For you people who like wings, get the fried wings appetizer. You get 4 WHOLE wings for $6 die . Not winglets, large deep-fried WHOLE wings. I am never disappointed & ask my family how rare that is! I have always found the service to be swift, friendly, and professional. I hope they open one on the north end. Finally I convinced my wife to try this place and it was delicious. We had General tso chicken and orange chicken with fried rice and lo mein. I've been to Oriental Express several times for lunch over the past year, and every time I was treated to a tasty, fresh, stirfry Chinese style dish. The ingredients are good quality, prepared extremely well, especially in the Hunan and Szechuan style. The fried rice that comes with the lunch specials is very good, not greasy, and very fresh. I would pass on the egg roll which is very average. But the boneless spareribs are very, very good. Prices, especially for lunch, are quite reasonable. You can have a great lunch with a drink for around six dollars. read more

I used to get take out from here a lot and then got out of the habit because of Covid so it has been about a year. My favorite thing I got was their egg rolls. Big and full of vegetables and flavor! So yesterday my daughter and I picked it up. I'm giving this 2 stars instead of 1 because she liked her plain lomein and orange chicken, although it really tasted more like non--spicy general tso. My meal, however was very disappointing. I got the garlic shrimp with fried rice and an egg roll. Couldn't WAIT for that egg roll so we will start with that. It was half the size it used to be, very thick breading and very little vegetables. I was so disappointed. The garlic shrimp was also disappointing. There were 5 large and well cooked shrimp. A lot of broccoli and hardly any sauce. It came in a rectangular tin that was packed 3/4s with dry, bland fried rice and 1/4 of the shrimp with no extra sauce. I don't know about you but I like to mix my rice with my saucy entree. I threw away almost all of the fried rice. Needless to say we won't be going back. I wish I had taken pictures. read more

Always love getting dinner here. The wife and I have dates nights and get Chinese and watch a movie. Have never had a bad meal or wrong order. Potstickers are wonderful and the house lo mein doesn't disappoint. The Chicken on a Stick is tasty. General Tso's chicken, szechuan chicken and Mongolian Beef have all been delicious. However, The past 2 times I have gone I have found black hairs in my food, and My chicken on the sticks has been burnt to a crisp. This is by far my favorite Chinese carry out places on the south side of South Bend. From what I understand, they are operated by the same owners of OG in Mishawaka. This review is for service. While visiting South Bend, a friend drove me to the restuarent. Ordered take out of fried wontons and small general tso. When picked up, was not asked to verify the order. When arrived at hotel room, the order turned out to be very different from what was ordered. I was at least ten miles away with no car. Called the place, offered to pay for original order (this was highter). The owner accused me of making the mistake, that the high school server was not wrong, that the customer is not always right. He yelled at me and would not let me speak, claiming I was the one who was wrong and was unwilling to compromise b/c he had to apologize profusely and cook a new order for whomever placed the order. Would not take any prisoners. Hung up on me. I am calling the cc company. Watch your order if you order. read more
