I've been dining here on and off for most of my life. It's a small family run joint that we grabbed a lot of in college. I was in town for the holidays and they were open on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. We ordered Christmas Day. They were slammed but super kind and got the food ready within 20 minutes. Always an awesome experience. Today we stopped in for a quart of rice to go with our dinner and I saw they have the Sesame Cold Noodles back on the menu, my daughter's absolute favorite. My daughter, who is 34 and had Spina Bifida, has bee pretty sick these last couple of years, back and forth from Indy, at one point she was in a skilled nursing facility and I wanted to bring her food from China House and they had taken the noodles off the menu quite a while. My favorite Chinese spot in the area! We've been going here for a decade now and still love it! Friendly service (they treat regulars very well), always ready super quick! There is a $10 minimum for cards though, FYI. Definitely recommend though! I love the Orange Chicken, love that has orange peel and chilis and broccoli in it. We call it Betty's Place, because she's one of the two daughters who have been working the counter since they were little kids. The girls and their mother are the friendliest, most capable restaurateurs of any carry-out Chinese places I've seen. The food is always excellent quality, always fresh, with generous portions, reasonably-priced, and you always walk out with some extra bonus, whether it is an egg roll, drink, soup, or dumpling. Betty's Place is a fixture of the neighborhood, and even beyond. I know people who drive past four or five other Chinese places because they know that they can count on China House. I got the general Tsos chicken with white rice and it came with a free egg roll which was perfectly fried and not a grease bomb. Family got sweet and sour chicken which I tried and was good, and garlic chicken w veggies. I really appreciate that they don't give plastic utensils unless you ask because most people don't need it and it's more harmful to waste then ask when needed. Food was done quick, nothing was soggy, or overly crispy and the sauce tasted good. The only thing I wasn't sure about is the crab rangoon, it tasted like cream cheese and nothing else. First off, the food was delivered to a hotel with NO utensils. I called to complain. They said they didn't include utensils unless they're requested. I and my girlfriend were raging. I told them I had never, NEVER heard of a dinner place of ANY kind in ANY town I had EVER been in that one has to request utensils in order to get them. I asked why they didn't include it and they said because they don't want to waste utensils if they're not needed. I said, are you really so f***ing cheap that you can't include f***ing PLASTIC UTENSILS with your food? They repeated that it has to be requested. I asked, how am I supposed to request it when there is no option on the GrubHub order for it? They just repeated that it's up to US to request it, not THEM to supply it. I am dead serious. They didn't even apologize. They said it was MY fault for not requesting it. I repeated that there is NO OTPION to request it on the GrubHub order. They told me it was up to the driver to request it, then. They seriously fought with me, and never backed down, from their "policy" that they don't "waste" plasticware unless it's requested. Then they told me to ask the hotel for it. I asked, why is it up to the hotel to provide the utensils that the restaurant should supply? Our policy, we don't waste, have to request, blah blah blah. Not even an "I'm sorry for the inconvenience." The woman on the phone was combative, testy, and insulting. So I hung up on them because I was getting nowhere. Now, on to the food. We ordered 2 egg rolls, crab rangoon, sesame chicken, and hot and sour soup. Every last bit of it was awful. Not one thing that they sent was prepared by their restaurant. All of it, every last bit of it, was food service standard. The hot and sour soup was like every hot and sour soup I've ever gotten from hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurants: brown, vaguely something flavored, standard crappy soggy vegetables, gummy. Egg rolls? TOUGH. As in, I couldn't eat them because they were MICROWAVED to being tough. Right. They didn't even fry the egg rolls. They were MICROWAVED to the point of chewiness. Not even remotely crisp. Same with the crab rangoon--it was the same standard food service crab rangoon I've gotten from every hole-in-the-wall place I have ever tried. I'm pretty sure it all comes from Gordon's Food Service or something similar. The sesame chicken? Dry, chewy, barely warm, covered with the familiar and vague brown sauce that comes out of a can. Not even remotely any sesame flavor. It tasted like old, reheated fried dough with a vague sensation of chicken and unidentifiable brown sauce. It came with the overly familiar, bright pink sweet and sour sauce that comes from a can from any food service company you can think of. It was not just horrible, it was inedible. I tried one piece of the chicken and the taste was repulsive. I had to fight not to spit it out. The crab rangoon was disgusting. I have gotten better Chinese food from the freezer at Walmart. In fact, that's what all this tastes and feels like: stuff that has been in the freezer for about 9 months, heated by microwave, coated with vaguely brown-flavored gummy crud. I am going to have to order something else tonight because I CAN'T EAT THIS. It's gross. It's horrible. It's virtually flavorless. The parts supposed to be crispy are chewy. I literally had to pull the egg roll apart like taffy to be able to get to the inside. It. is. AWFUL. read more

For the price, the student discount, the speed, the location, and the quality it deserves 5 star. 1 minutes drive from IUSB if you're lazy, or about 4' walk. I think you can sub It for any kinda sauce. We did sesame seed tofu and it was yummy! They told us we can't order a lunch special with it but we got a dinner a huge tray for 8 dollars ! China House is a typical neighborhood short-order Chinese restaurant, there's one in about every five-mile radius in every town. That being said, their quality/price ratio is good. You won't be awed by an extraordinarily crafted food, but you're not going to be disappointed either. I've had better Chinese food, but it costs more and I get smaller portions. The place can be charitably called modest. You go there to eat quickly or order take-out. Considering the price I'm not complaining. The family that owns the place is nice and friendly, seeing the two daughters helping out their parents is heartwarming. My personal favorite is Szechuan Tofu, but I haven't had anything on their menu that disappoints. I'm giving the place four stars because it's my default Chinese place when I want quick food without spending beaucoup bucks. They're consistent enough that they have earned my loyalty. read more

I've tried a few things from here, and so far only the lomein is what I'd recommend getting again. Anything that is denoted as "spicy" on the menu has hardly any heat at all and is sickeningly sweet. Ordered string beans and chicken in garlic sauce and was expecting a salty/savory combo, but instead my taste buds were assaulted with sugar and a hint of heat with a generic Asian flavor profile.
