The price and the food temperatures were the only redeeming qualities of this place. The food lacked any flavor. It was either too salty on some dishes, not enough on others, and the actual flavor of all was bland. Those that gave this place high marks don't know good food. If you're expecting typical buffet food, this is mostly it. Nothing special. If you enjoy feeling like crap after a meal, this place is for you. Left feeling disappointed. Went on a thursday aound noon. Busy but not crowded. Food was fresh, well stocked and pretty standard Chinese buffet fare. Price wasn't bad, though we didn't find out there was a senior discount until after we paid. Employées were courteous and friendly. Very comparable to Big Panda. I drove 185 miles to get to this restaurant - and it was worth it :) i'd been speaking at a school in southern Indiana all day long, had a speaking engagement in South bend the next day, and was looking for a Chinese buffet in the South Bend area as a place to get my dinner as my reward for a full day's work. I noticed some good reviews for this place and so set Google Maps and off I went. I was not disappointed. There was quite an assortment of food, including several varieties of shrimp and a gumbo with things I didn't recognize, but looked enticing. Food selections were well stocked and always hot; drink came with the meal. And as I often judge a Chinese buffet by its hot and sour soup and ice cream selection, the soup was very good, and even though the ice cream was only soft served, that was enjoyable too. The price was right at under 13 bucks for dinner. I live in VA, but I'll be looking this place up the next time I'm South Bend. read more

The selection of dishes is not as big as other buffets in the area but what they do have is very good. The coconut chicken, jalapeno chicken, butter potatoes, Mac and cheese, Cajun shrimp, fried donut holes, and garlic toast are very delicious. The wontons are decent but need a bit more cheese in my opinion. The soft serve ice cream they serve is very good. The whole place is kept very clean and it is nicely decorated as well. Fried rice is FULL of shrimp which I love. Crab rangoons are very good also. Everything I ate was better than average. But the atmosphere...I think they are saving money on the AC bill to afford all the shrimp in the rice. I've visited this location a ton over the years. I love to stop by when I'm home visiting. It's changed quite a bit since i was a kid but has also expanded. The restaurant isn't fancy, and kind of old and beat up looking. The value for the money paid is well worth it. Everything is replicated before it's empty and there is a nice variety of options. Typical Chinese options and some American fare. Nothing is super spicy or crazy. I would defiantly recommend a visit but don't go expecting a fancy experience. read more

New china is one of the best Chinese places in South Bend. For $7.99 you get a pretty nice buffet and a drink. Look in the newspaper for coupons. They always have them! My favorite parts are the fried chicken and ice cream :) they also sell things like bamboo and the Chinese calendars. You should definitely try it. read more

I've been reading some of the reviews for New China, and I'm sort of bummed out by the negativity I have seen. I understand that people have different tastes, but I think a lot of the bad reviews are simply from people being evil, and hiding behind their anonymity. I live in the area and visit New China on a regular basis. I have been eating there for a long time. Not sure, but probably eight years or so. It's my favorite place in South Bend. I also go to their other place in Mishawaka, Big Panda. In all cases I have never had a bad experience at either place. The owners are very nice people and are dedicated to the success of their business. The staff is also very nice and friendly. The food is good and the atmosphere is comfortable. Kids seem to love the place, and being an overage kid myself, so do I. I recommend New China highly, and I can't say enough good things about it. It's a great place for regular people, which are their main clientèle. Snooty elitists they are not. They can find something else to suit their "refined" tastes. read more

My family and I have been coming here for decades. It has come a long way since and has had many changes along the way. New China is another restaurant that makes the South Side the best Side of South Bend. It's cheap to eat there so anyone and everyone can enjoy the many many options they have to offer. New China has somewhat redeemed themselves, and I'm emphasizing the word SOMEWHAT. However I'm rating them as what they are which is a discounted buffet. New China is still on the low end of on the buffet spectrum and not my go-to place to gorge myself. But it's just meh.... so-so for the price. I still wasn't impressed with the food but I was with family members and that's when I usually go to places like that, especially New China and have to take one for the team it's called compromise. I don't expect to eat upscale cuisine all of the time when I go out especially when I'm with a group of people with different budgets. One improvement was New China's fried chicken. It wasn't charred and dried out like the last time, and actually had decent flavor. The other menu options at New China were still lacking in flavor, texture, and consistency. My daughter and I went in for lunch and were really impressed at the buffet considering the price. How often do you find a buffet for $8 anymore ? And that includes your drink! We figured the food would be horrible at that point. We were very surprised at how much was offered up and how good things were. The Place was Filthy, spider webs dirt, our table wasn't wiped off, and their electrical outlet was sideways and dead, which is a safety hazard, The food was bad and tasted nothing like asian food is supposed to taste even Oriental Express is Better than them. When we came in my boyfriend was told he can't order a meal if he wants to dine in its buffet only. One of their staff members reached over us for Soy Sauce twice mid bites. They can restock the sauce but not wipe the tables?
