Had dinner on a Wednesday around 5:30 PM. The restaurants atmosphere was comfortable and peaceful with relaxing music that helped enjoy the experience. I quickly ordered my food using a tablet placed conveniently on the table. My chicken mayo bowl was amazing! The rice was fluffy underneath the pieces of fried chicken layered with the mayo sauces. I miss the old setup with the artwork, but the new ambience could be worse. It was minimalist, but not sterile. New management was sweet and friendly, though I miss the old couple (but wish them a happy retirement!). The food was...okay? This is the reason behind my three-star rating: I ordered the jjajangmyeon, and while the flavor was good and it had a pretty decent amount of protein (pork and seafood), there was a 1/4 inch or so of grease left in the container when I finished. That is an unusual amount of oil to have in a takeout dish, I think. Since new management took over not too long ago, I might check them out later and see if that's improved, but for now I think I'll order something else next time. read more

Went back and tried their new dishes. - Jjampong - Yuringi - Tangsuyuk I would recommend the jjampong, the dish had that "fire taste/불맛" and hit the spot. The only draw back was the type of noodles they used, it wasn't your standard jjampong noodles, rather Chinese thin noodles. (Note: heard they changed the noodle to jjampong noodles). The yuringi - their sauce need a lot of work, can use more sourness and oyster sauce to give some umami flavor. The tangusuk sauce was based upon ketchup, old school sauce... but it also could used more sourness and more sugar. Be back to try their other new dishes, rating stays at 3 stars. read more

The interior and menu has changed under new ownership. Doesn't have as homey a vibe. My bibimbap was fine, but I was disappointed there wasn't a fried egg (I think there is like thinly sliced egg/omelet instead?). Also bummed you just get a small container of gochujang -- I like to apply as much as I want. The bachan was just a little bit of kimchi, cucumbers, and cold tofu...I missed some of the staples you can get elsewhere, like the fish cakes or potato salad. The food and service is very streamlined here, so I'd describe it has a kind of bare bones and sterile experience, but the food was decent. Came here to meet w/ friends on my last night in Ann Arbor. This place was recommended to me 2 years ago but I didn't have the chance to try until last month. It's in a convenient location, right next to my hotel basically. The restaurant is small but intimate. Service was great! The menu offers a variety but I left unsatisfied. Reason I ordered from Mr. Spots via DoorDash afterwards. This was what we ordered: 1. fried calamari (Mitch and Alexa since they had dinner plans at 6:30) 2. fried dumplings (for John and I) 3. bibimbap (John's entrée) 4. mandu gook The dumplings were fried w/o being too greasy, but it lacked filling. It was mostly crispy dough. My soup had a generous amount of dumplings and rice cakes but it was terribly under seasoned. The dumplings were boiled along w/ the soup, the soup it self lacked flavor but the dumplings were chewy and juicy. Not my cup of tea. Glad I tried it though. read more

The food tasted incredible and you could tell the ingredients were prepared with tremendous care. As soon as we went in, the ambiance was delightful and everything felt and looked incredibly clean which boosted my dine-in experience even further. My beef bulgogi was tender and the peppers/onions were cooked to perfection in an ideal portion size for dinner. Short Story: Likely one of the best Korean places in Ann Arbor! :) Long Story: I came to Ann Arbor back in May for a business trip and wanted to get authentic Korean food! I looked around and found this mom and pop place. The restaurant is cozy and has a non-descript exterior. I ordered the galbi combination which included a salad and miso soup. The price was slightly pricey but worth it for good Korean food. The gabli was grilled almost to perfection though the banchan was a bit small. The salad and miso soup were definitely tasty. Came in for a quick bite after work. Had the soon dubu jjigae with egg and sikhye to drink. It was a cold day so the soup really hit! So comforting, filling and delicious. It's not the same owners and the food has changed for the worse. I'm particularly unhappy with my order tonight. The beef bibimbap was boiled and sweet. The seafood pancake has way too much flour and the accompanying sauce was sickeningly sweet. My party also tried the dolsat bibimbap and the spicy beef soup. The general consensus was meh... I see I'm not the only one! The old owners sold and I miss the old place! Even the art on the wall, now sterile blank walls. We got the exact same dishes including beef and tofu bibimbap, bulgolgi, japchae but what a sad difference. NO seasoning, purple rice replaced by what looks like generic from the Kroger, small chewy lumps of meat. And, much to mine and my granddaughter's disappointment, no Korean tea. I'm giving two instead of one star since the very pleasant server explained that the new owners didn't keep the old recipes and tried to bring me some hot sauce. Someone else mentioned the dubious shrimp--I usually don't turn down shrimp but these looked like they'd been dragged through the Huron. I'll keep an eye out for any changes in the reviews but otherwise sad that this place has gone so far downhill. read more

Oh, how I used to love this place. Then they closed for over a month to remodel, and I'm guessing to change ownership. The tender pork bulgogi I used to crave is now large, tough, fatty, barely seasoned chunks, with near-raw strips of cabbage. Absolutely love the food here and the wonderful Korean family which owns this restaurant. Their food is delicious and comforting in the just-like-grandma-made-it kind of way. The family is always so kind and welcoming as well, generous and thoughtful with their guests. My personal favorite is the combination japchae (glass noodles with vegetables and meat) and Bulgogi. They have great side dishes that come with! I'm also a big fan of their Galbi tang (soup) to soothe and warm the soul on a cold Michigan day. The meat is fall-off-the-bones tender. Their tofu soup is also a very solid option. Understandably, they get pretty busy in between the takeout orders and all their dine-in customers, so dine-in services for dinner can be on the slower side. I thus usually prefer to order takeout. They do a thoughtful job preserving all the side dishes individually in foil, so the taste is just as great with their takeout! read more

This is a small family run restaurant in a small strip mall on the north east side of Ann Arbor. This is a tradition Korean style restaurant. It's dark and outdated, no frills, clear partitions in between tables. The service was ok. They seemed pretty busy with take out orders. The food was ok small portions in my opinion but taste was good. No ice for the water. When I went to pay at the cash register I saw the owner sticking his finger in food and tasting it. It looked like they were having they're dinner and family members were showing up, so I hope he was just tasting their meals. Kinda odd. too many other good options to go back for me. read more

I've been on the search for a new Korean go-to, and I think I found it. Now it may not look like much from the outside, but inside awaits a great experience. The staff were extremely friendly and quick. The food is very authentic and I love that they give you a full set of ban-chan (sides), even 2 types of Kimchi! Our order: Haemul Pajeon (Seafood Pancake), Kimchi Porkbelly, and Dwenjang Soondoobu (Soft tofu stew) Food was great, the porkbelly was a little more lean than in Korea, but still tasty. Definitely need to update my review (and rating) for Bewon in 2022: We have been here numerous times since my first review and it's been really positive experiences for the most part. Their bi bim bap and gal be are our favorites. (They're still a bit slow, but not as crazy as our first visit here. Must have just been bad timing.) They have also been exceptionally thoughtful starting from the COVID pandemic/endemic. Even now (Nov 2022) they have tables spaced out and with physical barriers between each. Anyway, this is our favorite Korean family restaurant in Ann Arbor and they deserve 5 stars. One important tip: call the restaurant first if you plan to dine in! During higher COVID outbreak times they still do close the dining area, and have takeout only. read more

Small place in a small shopping center. They don't accept Amex. It's cozy and has pleasant scent of delicious Korean food, appetizing. We started with the dukboki app and will share the braised mackerel. We decided to share since we have more Koreans spots to hit on this side of town. They gave us barley tea to start after being seated. The glass top keeps shifting on us, could use some 3M clear plastic stoppers. We are hungry and ready to get our Korean on here. Food smells good, wafting from the other tables. The dukboki is delicious, spicy, the rice cakes are nice and chewy and the veggies are julienned. I could easily have eaten the dukboki sauce with just rice alone, it was that good. App amount and just right. The braised mackerel was nicely seasoned and perfectly cooked, cut into pieces. My husband wasn't loving having to take the skin off, wasn't easy or the bones in the fish fillet either. He said he was too much work. It still tasted delicious to me but be carful while eating it that you don't swallow any bones though. Loving the purple rice here too. The banchans were yummy. We had the shredded white radish, seaweed, kimchi, cucumber, potatoes and rolled eggs. They have nice classical music in the background, classy! The pretty stencils of the trees on the walls are a nice touch. They gave us 4 red grapes for our dessert with our bill, they are the nice big juicy ones but has seeds in them. This place definitely warrants a repeat. I visited recently at lunchtime while in Ann Arbor and cannot wait to return! The service was friendly and fast, the food was delicious, and the meal hit the spot for all the right reasons. Situated in a small strip mall, Bewon is unassuming, but the word must be out, because this place was packed when we got there at prime lunchtime. After a short wait, we were seated by a friendly server, who appeared to be one of the owners. He got us set up with menus, took care of our drinks, and then brought some small munchies for us as we waited for our meal. I went for the Bokeum Bap, which looked like it would be filling and just a little spicy based on the description in the menu. In person, it looked even better, and the first forkful confirmed that this was a winner. Within about 5 minutes I had eaten the whole thing! I left satisfied and ready for my next trip back to Bewon -- hopefully it will be soon! read more

Yesterday I went to Bewon with my friend because I heard amazing things about how good their food was. However, maybe because it was overhyped, It didn't meet my expectations We got the ddukboki to start & the rice cakes did not fill up the plate at all. They definitely cheated us on the portion size. I also thought it could've been cooked for longer so that the rice cakes could soak up the flavor. Then I got the yookaejang and my friend got the soybean paste stew . Her stew had this plastic thing in it but we weren't sure what to say to them she just took it out and decided to eat it but stews should definitely NOT have a plastic wrap in them... my yookaejang was good but not anything special. The portion sizes are pretty small compared to some other places, taste is better than places closer to the UM campus. But I definitely had higher expectations. Our server was not friendly and did not look like she wanted to be there. However, the two people who seemed like the owners were very friendly. read more

Great little Korean restaurant near the Holiday Inn on Plymouth Road. The reasonably priced lunches come with several little yummy side dishes like kimchi, savory mini pancakes and seaweed salad. Service at what I assume is a family-owned is crisp and efficient. You're likely to see plenty of Koreans and Korean-Americans in the dining room, which I took as evidence that the food must be really authentic. My favorite so far is the E3 lunch bowl topped with spicy chargrilled pork and a sunny side up fried egg. I couldn't name all the ingredients, but the flavors all harmonize really well in a sizzling bowl. The sinus-clearing kimchi stew with beef dumplings isn't for the spice-averse, but helped me warm up on a cold fall day. No alcohol served at Bewon, which might be a consideration at dinner time. Not only did they automatically stuff the bag with plastic utensils and chopsticks, but everything was in large styrofoam containers and the whole thing was in a large plastic bag. C'mon folks, use recyclable materials, and don't automatically add in plastic utensils and chopsticks. Put the food in recyclable plastic or cardboard. Use a paper bag for God's sake! Food is genuine and very tasty. It is family run. Limited number of tables, so we go eat there before rush hours to avoid waiting.
