I and my two friends ate there today for Saturday lunch during our day trip to Red Wing. I was able to find this gem due to the recommendation of the owner of an antiques store in Red Wing and I was very glad that I took her recommendation. The cafe was very similar to a 1950's diner minus the counter and stools. My friend Kara had the meatloaf sandwhich which she said was delicious although she thought the onion rings on top was unnecessary. To her surprise and delight the mashed potatos with sandwich were made from real mashed potatos and not instant. She said she would recommend the sandwich. Her husband Chuck had the Inferno Burger. The burger was good, but definitely not spicy/hot according to him. My burger was Vampire Repellent burger with garlic and roasted red pepper. It was delicious and I quickly devoured the burger. Also, make sure you order the cheese curds to start. They were definitely the best curds that I have ever had outside of Wisconsin. The prices are great, my meal with a homemade cherrry coke was just over $9. If I am in Red Wing again, this will definitely be a sure stop. read more

I don't find Bev's quite as much a romantic diner from the days of old as the previous reviewer did. But then I eat at Bevs probably once a week and know it well. The current Bev's is a much-changed layout from "the old Bev's" which sad old graybeards and other fans of Red Wing nostalgia will pine for if you stick a quarter in them. It had the real long lunch counter and booths back then and now it has a short lunch counter, booths and--HORRORS--tables. Wh-a-t-ever. Bev actually no longer owns the joint, but the food is as good or better than the old days when Red Wing had Bevs--with '63 Impalla-driving Bev at the stove--and their arch rival ROBERTS CAFE ON PLUM STREET. Only Bev's remains. I had an omelet there this morning and it was stupendous. Even the coffee is good, and I usually hate that watered down battery acid that most diners serve as "coffee". Friday Fish Fry--during the day only, people--is excellent. Fish is served in several different fashions including beer-batter fried, and the ways other weird people eat their fish. Not raw of course, this is Red Wing. Bev's Friday Fish Fry at night has a 100% different feel than going there during Friday noon. I don't like it. Bev's a real nice diner and Red Wing institution. Plus they'll make me food off the menu if I'm feeling off the menu-ish. I have to love 'em. read more

Passing through Red Wing, we saw that this place had decent reviews and we were starving after two days of camping. Never ones to turn down breakfast foods, we were ecstatic to see that the breakfast menu was large and served all day. I ordered two eggs, toast, hashbrowns and bacon for only 6.75. I asked for my eggs to be poached and my toast to be dry- the eggs were beautifully done, and they remembered to leave my toast dry! Now, the hashbrowns... I am not sure how, but they seemed to be grated thicker than I've seen before and they were amazing. My husband had a hard time choosing between all the mouthwatering options, but landed on Biscuits & Gravy with a Buttermilk pancake on the side. The gravy was super good, the biscuit was perfectly flakey and the pancake the size of the plate and was delicious as well. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. She seemed to know all the regular customers' preferences and tended to them while maintaining great service to us and our needs as well. read more

If you're headed to or just driving through Red Wing make sure you save some room for Bev's Cafe! The prices are VERY VERY reasonable!!! I had the House Made Gritwurst (comes with 2 eggs and two pieces of toast) which was excellent with over easy eggs and tabasco! Its definitely different but it was well worth it...but a little on the bland side (Thats what you get with German food) My better half had the stuffed french toast, which was also excellent! The french toast is stuffed with cream cheese and then is topped with your choice of strawberries, or blueberries, and whipped cream...I must say it was brilliant!!! To top it all off they offer locally brewed sarsaparilla... I had two! :-) You all should check it out, its not the oldest restaurant in Red Wing for no reason. read more

Horrible. Yes, it was busy and it's a small place. There were no take out orders to bog things down - just customers in a very small place with 8 booths and 5 tables. Plan to wait 10 mins for your server to arrive. My order of 2 French toasts with sausages took 27 mins to arrive. The Sausages were fried to the point of being dried out sticks like jerky. The French toast was barely barely barely done - and lukewarm when served. My server was polite and apologetic and removed the coffee charge for the sausage snafu, but that doesn't fix the issue of the kitchen. read more

Stopped by for lunch with my wife while loitering around Red Wing. I got the bacon curd burger and she got stuffed French toast. My stuffed bacon curd burger was pretty good. I devoured it in record time. My wife's stuffed French toast was not as good unfortunately. It was a couple soggy pieces of French toast with a slab of cream cheese sandwiched between them. Then it was smothered with so much fruit tipping that it seemed to almost turn the dish into a soup. She ate around half of it before stopping. To make matters slightly worse it did not come out with the fruit she had asked for. So my food was pretty good, her good not so much. Thad why I give this place 3 stars. Ya know, maybe my expectations were pretty high, but I'm a border-line 3-4 stars on this one. Most of the stuff was as previously reviewed - quaint, wonderful people, clean, . . . just thought my entree was underwhelming. It was the club omelet - like the club sandwich - bacon, turkey, tomato, swiss . . . I thought the turkey was on the salty side and didn't need to be given the bacon, and the tomato was mostly absent. There were about half a dozen tiny pieces, and the whole omelet was smothered in Hollandaise. Now granted the menu does actually say 'smothered' in Hollandaise, so just know that they're not kidding. Overkill for me. My wife loved the decor and her omelet was definitely better than mine. Otherwise, great rye toast, amazing coffee. Also disappointed in the 'full order' of hash browns . . . pretty small and considering my wife asked for them crispy (we split them), they came out more the consistency of a scoop of browned mashed potatoes. Overall, a 3.5 in my book. Nice, but I kept hoping to be wowed by something. read more

I have nothing bad to say about Bev's. We stopped in around 11:30 on a Friday morning. We watched the regulars come in, and were impressed by how well the staff knew the preferences of those who frequent the place. It's clearly a breakfast destination, and they serve their skillets, omelets, and other morning fare all day. I wanted to try something that wasn't a specialty and chose their version if the Juicy Lucy. Having been spoiled by Juicy Lucy's in the Twin Cities at Matty B's, the 5-8 Club, the Blue Door, and my personal favorite, the Nook, I didn't expect much. To me, the burger was fine. The cheese ended up mostly to one side of the burger, and the patty was overcooked for my liking, but I liked the taste. The burger tasted like beef, nothing fancy or pretentious, just good meat. I would go again, and would try their breakfast choices. I would avoid the traditional busy times, to not compete for space with the regulars. One thing, they no longer accept credit cards, but have an ATM on the premises. read more

The Service: Slow service, disorganized forgetful wait staff, messy tables - not busy, food just alright. The Food: One of us ordered the classic 1/3lb burger, was just your basic small burger that you could make at home with cheap buns from the grocery store. Nothing special. I ordered the grilled chicken greek salad. They served it with ranch dressing, why? Im not sure. I did make sure it had romaine lettuce because I wont pay $8.99 for an iceberg lettuce salad like the rest of them on their menu. The worst part: Was that the line cook came out to the front. His huge baggy red shirt was soaked with food and slop, his apron was dragging on the floor and it smelled as if he just had a smoke. If we hadnt waited so long for our food i think I would've quite eating right then and there. Maye he was the dishwasher, not sure but it was just really sloppy looking when your trying to eat. Would I go back: For a malt only. I'm not a picky person, pretty easy going and i've eaten in worse places and enjoyed them but this was not so good. I would return only to order a malt to-go. I could not be more disappointed with the service we received. We were so excited to try this place out based on reviews for breakfast. It took a bit to place our order. My boyfriend ordered the Mexican Omelet and I a skillet with no onions. As we were waiting the person behind us orders chipped beef and gravy, which also sounded great. We asked the waitress if it was a special and she said it used to be but its not on the menu but you can just order it. So it's a secret? Why not post it? All of a sudden the power goes out. The entire town lost power. Now this part is definitely not their fault and I'm not rating them on it, but instead how they reacted to it. So some people are told their food will not be cooked due to the outage. We had been waiting a while and we finally track down our waitress and she tells us that they will be able to complete our full order. It comes out, the Mexican omelet isn't made in the tortilla as indicated (the reason my boyfriend got it..something different) and my entire skillet has onions in it. We had also gotten coffee and a chocolate milk. One of the chefs was out there and we said this isn't what we ordered. His response, well it was probably too dark to read the ticket". What about the tortilla? He said they couldn't open the refrigerator to get it. We asked if we could just leave it, he said sure. We said what do we owe for the milk/coffee? Instead of at that point saying we our sorry..you don't owe anything he said..about $5. REALLY? We paid our $5 and have proceeded to share our experiences with others read more

Service was good, short wait to get in at 10am on a Saturday. Avoid the "stuffed" French toast unless you are okay with very minimal "stuffing". Disappointing for a "signature" meal item. Just about a tablespoon (if that much) of cream cheese. I didn't ask for more though, so they might have accommodated. Noticed no cream cheese flavor in first few bites, peeled it open to see the dollop in the center only. So little cream cheese I could barely taste it when I did spread it out. :( read more

I came here for the first time traveling through and ordered an eggs Benedict with egg whites, because I hate yolk. I received it (to go) and it was half raw eggs (with yolk spewing all over my English muffins) and the hollandaise is more like nacho cheese sauce. I called to get it fixed and the owner was a real jerk with ZERO customer service skills. Telling me how poached eggs are not fully cooked (as if I didn't know this) and that I could come back and pick up a small box with a couple egg whites in it (not the whole meal.) Also, that if he replaces the meal he will lose four dollars. Lol! The food sucks, customer service is horrible, do not go here! read more

Service was slow considering the place wasn't that busy. The burgers and chocolate shake were quite good, and the creamy cucumbers were a nice change as a side item. The hamburger buns looked like they were from a grocery store and had been squashed. Don't bother with the chili: they claim it's homemade ("fresh every day"), but it tasted like the cook opened a can of tomatoes and chopped up a burger for some meat. In our travels through the northern reaches of Minnesota and Wisconsin, this diner has a place in our heart. Red Wing is a beautiful old-fashioned Minnesota town along Hwy 61. The newfangled restaurants that reside in the main shopping district do not reflect the history or character - but not Bev's. It's a small, old-fashioned diner with a long counter with stools, and some booths along the wall. The trademark worn plates, coffee cups, and metal utensils common to the old diners are part of the defining characteristics of this diner. The walls look like they could use a paint job, but they add to the antiquity and coziness of this place too. Locals eat here and the service is friendly, even to the outsider tourists like us. read more

We stopped for breakfast around 1000. My gal had the eggs, hashbrowns and sausage. I had the single sized bisquits and gravy, with two eggs on the side. The hashbrowns were as reported, shredded in larger, chunky pieces, and were very good. Her sausages were also good, My bisquits and gravy were also top notch, and I have had B & G at a lot of restaurants, (always doing my own personal survey to see where the best ones are). These had really good flavor, and the gravy was plentiful and thick. These were right up there with the best!! The single bisquit size, (with the two eggs addded by me), was a good sized meal, glad I didn't order the double size! And I'm a big eater! I would go here again in a heartbeat! read more
