    Cubano
    Steve G.

Despite the fact I grew here in South Milwaukee, I never get there these days. Today, I'm glad we ventured out to Better Together Cafe. It was trippy seeing it occupy what used to be a Dairy Queen long ago. This is a definite upgrade! The staff were extremely friendly and made us feel welcome. The food menu is limited, but that's ok - they have a few sandwiches and soup. I chose the Cubano, always a favorite of mine. This one stood out from many I've had. The place had a good vibe. Lots of people came and went. I hope that's a sign they are doing well! All in all, an excellent experience! South Milwaukee is lucky to have the place!

Shakerato - A person holds a plastic cup of iced coffee labeled "SHKR" inside a cafe, with a window behind showing parked cars and a snowy street scene outside. The cup contains a light-colored beverage with ice, and the person is seated at a wooden table. A laptop is partially visible on the left side of the image.

Shake shake! The shaken expression know as the shakerato is well worth it. Better than the commercial guys if you know what I mean. I truly love Better together as a new place I discovered thanks to Yelp as they have great coffee and a great small environment to get some work done. Highly recommend checking them out!

    Grilled cheese for the win

Date of visit: February 22, 2025 I had two meals out today; one on the far north side and one on the far south side. I am a bit surprised that the far better meal was that of Better Together in South Milwaukee, a city that gets literally no credit or respect--perhaps things are a'changing! The staff could not have been friendlier or harder working if they tried! While the space is small, they make the best of it and never let grass grow under their feet, always cleaning, organizing, and making sure that food and coffee drinks are delivered quickly and, of course, deliciously. They even came over with waters for us without asking! Who does that!? I had the grilled cheese, which was simple, but tasty. Would have liked to see a slight upcharge to add a protein, but the bread was excellent and the cheese was cheesing. Suspect this would pair well with a soup but today's soup was a no from me, dog, so I had to settle for just the sandwich.

Pomegranate refresher with caffeine, ordered the small. Nice and "refreshing" drink honestly delightful flavor. They had a lot of fun flavor combinations for refresher but I decided to try just a just a single flavor because the pomegranate just sounded good! That it was! Cute space, big menu so many options of things to try!

Sausage breakfast sandwich - A breakfast sandwich featuring a toasted bun, melted cheddar cheese, and a sausage patty is shown resting on crinkled aluminum foil. The cheese is melted and slightly stringy, with some cheese extending outward. The bun appears toasted with a light brown surface. The sandwich is assembled with the sausage patty and cheese between the bun halves, and the foil provides a reflective background.

As the very first stop after landing at MKE, we expected a little Midwest hospitality. We didn't receive any of that when walking in and waiting to order here. We stood in front of two workers talking to each other and another standing a few feet away doing who knows what for at least 2 minutes before being acknowledged. The least someone could have done was say they'd be with us shortly. That's literally all it would have taken; acknowledgment. The sausage egg sandwich on an English muffin was good, but I wish they'd had a better (maybe homemade) hot sauce to go with it. We enjoyed our coffee and I will say that the huge fancy milkshakes were tempting. The service was a bad first impression to a friendly city.

A milkshake served in a clear plastic cup, topped with whipped cream, multicolored sprinkles, and marshmallows. The toppings include a purple heart-shaped decoration, a white candy, and pastel-colored cotton candy. The background is blurred, focusing on the dessert, which appears to be a sweet treat from a cafe or dessert shop.

What a special ice cream place! I could not believe all the varieties of shakes and went with the special which included a hostess cupcake and cotton candy. Say what? Yes! It hits the spot and not too heavy at all.

Another successful Yelp suggestion and event! Better Cafe was cute, clean, helpful service and warm atmosphere. We had the espresso oreo and cinnamon toast crunch, which were very popular and delicious. I took mine without whip cream but enjoyed the extra boost of caffeine. The cinnamon toast crunch tasted just like the cerea. They were all types of folks from families, working people and singles. There are many options from plain coffee to all types of delicious creative drinks. I would definitely go again and try another flavor. Enjoy

    Shake of the Month

Cookies n' Cream Shake: Better Together Cafe is located in South Milwaukee near the entrance to scenic Grant Park. The cafe opened in 2021 by owners Becky and Zach Kinzer. Its name comes from their belief that some things are better together, such as people and coffee with ice cream. It was a bit weird walking in for the first time as that building was a Dairy Queen for my entire life until 2021. Let me tell you though, I visited in the afternoon and it far more crowded than DQ ever was. The place was packed! Staff were super friendly and considering the crowd, service was quick. I found the interior to be tastefully decorated, clean, and cozy. Their menu offers a variety of coffees, a few different food options, and over ten different shakes, including a gluttonous "The Better Shake" aka their shake of the month. I went with their Cookies n' Cream shake, which is made with OREO cookies, milk, chocolate syrup, and ice cream. The version with espresso was tempting, but it would have been too much caffeine late in the day for me. Anyways, my caffeine-free version was extra thick and contained a plethora of crushed OREO pieces along with a generous amount of whipped cream doused in thick ribbons of chocolate syrup. There's even a conspicuously placed whole OREO gracing the top. The nostalgia may be gone from that building, but delicious ice cream is there to stay. Doughboy approved Doughboy_Food_Reviews

EspressOreo shake - A person holds a cookies and cream milkshake topped with an Oreo cookie and whipped cream inside a cafe. The cafe has holiday decorations, including hanging snowflakes and small Christmas trees on the table. Large windows show an outdoor scene with trees and parked cars, and the interior features a bar-height counter with chairs and a wall-mounted picture frame.

Better Together Cafe has been on my list of places to go for a while now and we finally stopped in. It was great! The Elf Christmas display was absolutely adorable and the food and service were excellent. We got the caprese panini and EspressOreo shake to split and it was perfect!

I've been here a couple of times. Nice place to pick up a sweet treat. Their waffle sundaes and shakes are really good. The 2 employees i usually see in there are very neat and clean and pay careful attention to each order. The parking lot is tricky so i just park in the street.

This is such a cute place! Parking lot is small but it matches their indoor capacity. Staff were friendly. I had wanted to check this place out for a while after following them on Instagram for a couple years now. The August shake celebrating Harry Potter's birthday always caught my eye. My nieces were in town so I jumped at the chance of taking them there. I had to laugh because one niece got a vanilla shake, the other the cookies and cream, and never adult, the fun Harry Potter one. The shakes come in three sizes. I should have gotten both nieces small because they did not finish their mediums. The menu in the cafe is just text so if you're looking for visuals, I recommend going to their website. They also have a shelf of cute local items they sell. My nieces said the shakes were good and they would go back. One commented that she thought it was maybe a bit too thick. Harry Potter butterbeer one was delicious.

Holiday specialty drink - Two milkshakes topped with whipped cream, cherries, and colorful sprinkles are placed on green plates on a wooden table. Each milkshake has a cookie on top and is accompanied by red licorice, marshmallows, and a small container of breakfast syrup. In the background, a small decorated Christmas tree and two upholstered chairs are visible, indicating a holiday setting in a cafe or restaurant.

We looooove the monthly themed shakes that are served. A pro and con is the space for waiting. Such a great attraction that it's almost always crowded and finding somewhere to stand becomes awkward and in-the-way.

A milkshake in a clear plastic cup features a swirl of vanilla and caramel syrup, topped with rainbow gummy candies and colorful sprinkles. The drink is set on a wooden surface near a window, with a blurred background showing a red vehicle outside. The toppings include a rainbow gummy candy and pastel-colored cotton candy, creating a vibrant presentation.

The environment is very clean. Very friendly service. The drinks are delicious and the appearance is beautiful

The better shake - A milkshake in a light blue cup features whipped cream, blue sprinkles, and a small paper umbrella. A green sugar stick is inserted into the whipped cream. The drink is placed on a wooden table near a window, with a snowy outdoor scene visible in the background, including parked cars and leafless trees.

Date of visit: March 23, 2025…read more How funny that we visited Bakehouse 23 on the 23rd! Totally not intentional but glad that we did stop by as both of the things that I tried were excellent. First up, location and staff. This is truly a neighborhood bakery so expect to pull in, grab some things, and dash off. I believe they have some tables for the summer but in March there's just no place to sit and enjoy your items, so keep that in mind. It's a family affair behind the counter with the young gentleman reminding me of helping my mom bus tables as a waitress many years ago. He was polite and efficient, two great things you don't see in young 'uns these days! Most importantly, the goods! Sundays are cinnamon roll days and that is where it's at, people. They are ready by 9 am and when we grabbed them this morning, they were still warm! We took them to the Starbucks on Drexel because of the aforementioned seating challenge and they were still warm and also delicious. Easily one of the best rolls I've ever had--and I am nothing if not a bread connoisseur. I also snagged a peanut butter cup for later (later being noon...) and it was phenomenal. Don't sleep on this place--honestly, how am I the first one reviewing it!--if you're anywhere in the southern hemisphere of Milwaukee, it's a gem!
