Bett & Bev's BBQ in Jefferson is a fam fav. Occasionally, on Friday nights they do their smoked prime rib special, and when we found out today was a prime rib day, we changed our dinner plans and headed that way. The crust on this prime rib is similar to a caramelized rack of ribs, and makes you want more of that sweet flavor. Their brown gravy is a favorite of ours as well, and we had to get a side of it just to have some. THEN decided it was so good we got an order of mashed potatoes and gravy, even though we were stuffed. Coleslaw and baked beans were great sides. Limited hours, so check online before going, but definitely give them a go! This is definitely a hidden gem. It was not the easiest to find and it was well off the beaten path but the food was great. The portions seemed a little small but the food and service made up for it. It was very busy which I found to be a good thing since I was from out of town, that showed me the popularity of the restaurant and there seemed to be a lot of regulars. If you are anywhere near Jefferson at 11-2 on a weekday, or 11-7 on Thursday and Friday, you will find that this BBQ place is worth the trip. We were darned hungry when we arrived on a Thursday night, and that might explain why we thought it was a good idea to take them up on their special..a $5 frip, as well as the ham combo and a pulled pork combo, for the two of us. First of all, the frip. This local special is a sort of pulled pork Iowa version of nachos...thick cut fresh waffle fries, topped with pulled pork, then bbq beans, and topped with cole slaw. It is a meal to be reckoned with. I heard from a local that the joke is that a frip is always followed by a nap. I kid you not, I went back to the hotel and feel asleep at 5:30! True story. Now, the ham sandwich combo. We Iowans expect a smoked ham sandwich to be a slab of ham on a bun. Not here...here it is a hefty pile of shredded ham, topped with a choice of sweet or spicy sauce. This ham was some of the best I've had. I didn't even use a fork to steal a bite. I went straight in with my fingers. Yum. The pulled pork combo (with spicy sauce on the side, cause I'm cautious) was also a huge pile of shredded meat on a bun, and served with a choice of sides. Since we already had the frip, it was superfluous, but that didn't stop me from eating nearly all the pork, leaving the bun, because I didn't want to waste space on bread. This smoke house had us reminiscing about other smoke houses, and Bett & Bev's wins out over any Jethro's (too greasy), or most KC (too dry). What would make it five stars? Two things...more hours and more attentive service. We wanted to ask about the first issue, but staff literally disappeared into the back, after our order was served. We wanted to talk a little, find out about their business and compliment them, but I had to stick my head into the kitchen to tell them "thank you," as we were leaving. Today my wife and I came to Jefferson to go to the casino. We were going to eat there but they did not have a good selection of food so we decided to look around Jefferson to find a local place to eat. We decided on bett & bev's BBQ. I was honestly a little skeptical when we pulled up and it was what looked liked like a run down old Pizza Hut. One we got inside you could tell that they were a small town local place that cared more about the food then the appearance. They had the saucy trio as a special today. It was 3 meats sauced up and on a bun I got it with a side of beans and a drink. My wife ordered the turkey sandwich with a side of frips and a drink. The food came out quickly and looked amazing. The saucy trio was excellent the BBQ sauce was a great homemade sauce and the baked beans tasted like they had gone through the smoker. My wife loved her turkey sandwich and said the turkey was juicy and flavorful. She loved the frips which are homemade fried potato chips. Over all it was a great little find in a small town. If I'm over this way again I will be back. read more

If you love barbecue this place is for you. Hot beef and hot or is wpnderful. The ribs are fabulous. Lots of food for a reasonable price.

Bett & Bev's is great BBQ. Smoked brisket, pulled pork and turkey. Only open for lunches Monday thru Friday and evenings Thurs & Friday. No weekend hours. A specialty is the Frip Pie. Frips are like fresh, thick deep fried potato chips. The Frip Pie are layers of frips, smoked meat, baked beans and coleslaw. read more

I am a huge fan of Jethros bbq in Des Moines but live about 45 minutes away. Britt and Bev's is in Jefferson about 15 minutes away and it is Awesome! My dad and I try to go whenever we can but one problem is that if u are craving their bbq they are only open from 11-2 Monday through Wednesday and then 11-9 Thursday and Friday and closed Saturday and Sunday. You become accustomed to just always figuring they are closed and so when we think of places to go eat they tend to not come to the forefront of my mind due to the limited hours they are open. Their menu has brisket, pulled pork, Turkey and ham plus some other sides and such. On Fridays they will have a special like Ribs(which are amazing) smoked chops, etc. You can go on their website and they have their specials planned out ahead of time so if you are craving ribs you can choose the exact Friday they will be on the menu. I would have given 5 stars if the hours were more friendly. Definitely the real deal bbq. read more
