This hotel is great if you're planning to visit Salem. It's a decent distance from all of the Salem attractions, and there are quite a few surrounding restaurants if you decide to eat away from Salem. The hotel was clean, the room was clean, the beds were comfortable, and the free breakfast was good. The service was friendly. The hotel grounds were really well maintained, and it looked inviting. Our family was only at this location for one evening. We were visiting for a concert nearby. With nine year old twins, our main attraction for any hotel is the pool. Unfortunately, the pool was over chlorinated and made the kids and my husband sick. The fumes made it hard to breathe and the twins were up all night coughing from inhalation and stinging eyes. After leaving the pool area and coming back to the room to rinse off, we found the water pressure to be very weak. The hotel itself was fine and the staff was super friendly. Granted we live one town over, so the need to stay here is not normally needed. However, my wife was part of a bridal party taking place at Pierce Farm on Witch Hill. The accommodation for transport to the venue was great, since there's no parking available there. The staff were pleasant, the hotel was clean, and I loved the room. Large size, comfortable, with plenty of amenities. Even the travel size toiletries (soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion) was Pharmacopoeia, and they were really nice! The continental breakfast was mediocre, nothing fancy. Well, except the pancake machine. That was absolutely adorable with the batter pre-measured and then the pancake cooked on a conveyer belt. Oh yeah, real Jetsons-esque if you ask me! The dining room was clean for breakfast and the staff keep up with replenishing food. The only odd thing was security posted in the hallway on our floor. We had a few issues while staying at this location. First, house keeping literally barged into our room at 8 AM while we were still sleeping. There was no knock. She simply used the key and came in. I had to tell her to leave. Secondly, the indoor "heated" pool was an ice bath. All of the kids were shivering and could barely stay in for more than 10 minutes. Not to mention the pool deck was soaking wet, flooded with water. Children were slipping every where. It was very dangerous. I would highly recommend this hotel. We were in town to attend a college hockey game at Endicott College. This hotel was centrally located within a 15 min drive of the rink. The rooms are very clean, spacious, bed are comfortable and the linens are soft. The breakfast was expansive for a free breakfast offering. Also plenty of places to sit. This hotel is in a great location. You are 30 minutes from Boston and about 20 minutes from Salem. We came during the peak time of year in October to visit Salem. The price is average for this type of hotel and understandable during this season. Lots of parking. Staff was friendly at the front desk and we had no issues. Main lobby is on the second floor. First floor has an indoor pool. There is a complementary breakfast from 7-10 am. The breakfast consisted of scrambled eggs, potatoes, sausage, muffins, breads, and your typical cereals. We were on the fourth floor and our room and hallway felt dark. The room smelled a bit musty but we opened the window a bit for some fresh air. The bathroom is very tight and small. Not a great layout. Felt a bit dirty to me. Prior to Covid I would Lysol the entire room anyway but during this trip when I Lysoled the room, there was lots of dust and dirt on my wipes after. Overall, a decent room considering we really just needed it for sleep. We spent most of our time exploring. Definitely a good location and not terrible. I got into a situation after midnight Friday into Saturday. I had booked an AirBnB in Salem that was well rated and included air conditioning. When I arrived at the AirBnB around 11:45pm from a function downtown, I found my room windows still open and the thermostat reading 80 degrees. The owners did not turn on the central air conditioning as promised in the listing and as I clearly requested upon my initial arrival at 6pm when it was 84 in my bedroom. Now its midnight, I'm exhausted, and stuck between pissed, shocked and WTH do I do now? I am not calling my friends after midnight asking to crash but hey, do you have air conditioning, because I'm gonna be sick in a minute. I thought about just going home but I couldn't do that drive again (to Connecticut), I'd get home 3am. So I stand on their porch calling hotels! AFTER MIDNIGHT. Hawthorne Hotel had ONE room and it was $400 (!) Luckily my 2nd call was to this hotel-the manager there was an ANGEL. I told him the situation and he secured a room for me, don't worry about a credit card over the phone, we'll settle upon my arrival, come right over, you are a 15 minute drive away... Tom, the manager, greets me upon arrival. Its well after midnight and he's doing all he can to ensure I feel safe and comfortable. As he is checking me in (after asking if I had any preferences), he tells me about the pool, the fire pit, breakfast included. All this and they're feeding me too?!? It can only get better from here. I never thought the Best Western would be as beautiful and clean as it was-I opened my room door and after my previous experience, it was heaven-mind you, they weren't expecting me, and the room was perfectly and one of the cleanest I have ever stayed in. I had 2 double beds-the one I slept in was super comfy. The only downside was a bright light over the parking lot. I adjusted the curtain tighter and it was fine. When I travel I always bring ear plugs and a black hand towel to cover my eyes if light comes in. I turned the A/C down to 61 and slept like the dead, until my alarm went off at 8am! The bathroom was lovely, the water pressure perfect (this is a huge deal). I even had a mini fridge and coffee maker in my room. Since I had to get back into Salem for a Symposium, I didn't have a chance to check out the pool or the fire pit, but I did have breakfast and coffee and it was yummy. I really cannot express how grateful I am to the front manager, Tom Mangene. You went above and beyond to make a frazzled exhausted single woman traveler feel comfortable-that is the true mark of hospitality and professionalism. This rating is based not only the hotel or room itself, but for how I was treated so late at night. I cannot thank you enough. We stayed at this hotel for four nights during our exploration of Boston and costal New England. It is probably 15 miles north of Boston. (Hotel rates in Boston are extremely expensive, $500.00+.) It wouldn't be fair to rate this hotel with the Ritz in mind so I will rate it against the many Best Westerns we have stayed at, yes, we are Rewards Members. This location apparently went through extensive renovations recently. We were lucky to arrive after they were all complete. Check-in was seamless. The employees behind the counter were friendly and appeared to really like their jobs. This continued during our stay. We asked to be away from the elevator and ice maker and were assigned a room at the end of a hall on the third floor. Long trip to get ice but quiet in the room. The room was tidy and the beds comfy however the bathroom is small. We had a small frig and microwave. We had everything we needed. What sets this hotel above other BWs was the free breakfast. Many locations have a small dining area. This location has a huge dining area with booths and high top tables. The décor was crisp and attractive. The "free" breakfast had everything anyone could ask for. There was a waffle making area with many toppings, eggs (scrambled and hard boiled) breakfast meat (changed daily) potatoes, yogurt, a variety of items to toast and sweets. We grabbed bananas and apples for the road. Additionally, the attendants kept everything full and clean. Here's a tip on how to get to Boston. Drive to Wunderland (ask at the front desk) take the train/subway to the city. Get there early as the parking structure is full by 10am. Take the trolley tour around the entire route then do it again and get on and off at every stop. read more

IMHO, this hotel is in a range of an economy hotel. When we stayed here, they were working on an exterior wall to update the looks. Staff are sufficiently nice and friendly (in a NE sort of way). Front desk staff are pleasant and accommodating. They gave us some very helpful suggestions and pertinent information accessing Boston attractions. Very good sleep quality with quiet room and comfortable beds. We had a two-queen bed room with mini frig and microwave. We could've used a little bigger TV (24 in?). It was roomy enough, though. Perhaps, it could use some updating to freshen up the looks throughout this hotel. It gave out sort of a gloomy feeling since carpet looked faded and worn out. Could use some detailed cleaning since I found some food particles on the carpet floor around corners. Bathroom was updated and nice. When we were here, it was too early in the season for outside pool to be open, but indoor salt-water pool was nice. Breakfast was very decent, but very busy with presence of a school group when we stayed. It looked more relaxed and quieter in later hours (after 8:30 am). There are some good choices of restaurants and eateries in the area. One Italian restaurant is within a comfortable walking distance if you'd like to stroll in the evening. These rooms are disgusting. Do not stay here if you are sensitive to smells, get headaches/migraines, or just want general cleanliness. Purchased a room with a king bed. As we got settled we noticed an awful smell coming from the heater and it kept getting worse and worse each minute. Like someone dried their sweaty boots on it and we were in that boot. It was a hot heavy pungent smell - made your eyes sting. I got a migraine from it and ruined my night. We were able to switch rooms, but only a room with queen beds was available so we settled with that. This new room smelled almost as bad, but it was more tolerable. Both rooms in general were not very clean. At check out, I asked to have the difference refunded since a queen room is cheaper than a king room. I was told I would have to contact Expedia since I booked it there. Understandable. Not even 2 weeks passed and I contacted Expedia for the refund and they contacted the hotel. The hotel said I waited too long so a refund was impossible. I called the front desk myself. The gentleman must have known I would call - right off the bat he was rude. "Well, I don't understand the problem. We let you switch rooms" Let me switch rooms? Seriously? Were you going to keep me hostage in there? I mentioned the queen was cheaper and he said "no they are the same" (with a nasty tone) as I was looking at their website. $239 for a King and $229 for Queen. I know $10 per night isn't much, but these days it can really make a difference. read more

"Yes there is construction, But..." So I only booked for one night and after reading previous reviews was slightly worried about the construction. I was only sleeping there and was leaving early in the morning. The lobby is pretty much gutted along with the lower level as they are renovating the entire hotel. Not a problem in my opinion. Our room was brand new and modern with a great mattress and really good pillows. This is all I need in a hotel of this level. It is not the Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton, but it IS a reasonably priced hotel in good proximity to Boston and the North Shore. The new rooms are GREAT! and much improved from when it was a Comfort Inn. I had stayed here twice before when it was a Comfort Inn, and the rooms were kind of dismal. The staff were all very welcoming and helpful and I commend them for keeping up their morale and professionalism during the overhaul of the hotel and what I am sure many complaints from other customers. On every website this hotel is listed on that I saw, there are numerous warnings of the construction, so if that bothers you, stay away. If you want a newly renovated room with great staff, then stay here. I can't wait to see it when it is finished. I will be back again and again... read more

My family and I wanted to take a weekend excursion so we decided to explore some Americana up near the Cape Ann and Salem area. We typically stay at Best Westerns but some are great and some are not so good. I found this one to be great in so many ways. Despite not being super fancy, it is clean and new looking. It is also nice smelling and has a laundry room. The best part of this hotel is the staff though. They are friendly and quite helpful. I needed help with a few things and they were accommodating and kind with me. It's always a pleasure to encounter friendly staff and this hotel has many friendly staff. I am really pleased with the room, the service, the cleanliness, and I am giving them bonus points for a nice warm pool!! I would stay here again. For those looking for a hot tub, there's no hot tub but the bathrooms have tubs if you really want a hot soak. The complementary breakfast was a nice touch too and the grounds just outside of the hotel are lovely. read more

Booked this hotel based on the fact that it has an indoor pool for my daughter. This hotel was not worth $200/night. The pool wasn't very clean, the tile around it was soaked and green from sitting water and my daughter slipped and fell walking to the stairs. The beds in our room were so uncomfortable we were all tossing and turning. Our room was right near the elevator and it was so loud listening to people past midnight loudly talking in the hallway and slamming doors.. not ideal with a sleeping toddler. read more

First of all this a clean newly renovated hotel. I would give it five stars except for two issues. First, believe everything you read in reviews about noise. I have never been in a hotel of this quality with as many noise issues. Primarily through doors. We could hear every word that was spoken in the adjacent room through the door (adjoining room door). We could hear people in the hallway and even though the ceilings are concrete plank I could hear the kids upstairs running around their room. If sound is an issue, don't stay here. Second, When we checked in we discovered that someone had covered the smoke detector and one of the sprinkler heads with plastic. I sent pictures to the hotel and contacted Best Western Customer service. The next day, I received a very nonchalant response from Chad Hanson, the General Manager, and an email from Best Western Customer service saying they had opened a file and would be contacting me shortly. Its now Thursday and I haven't been contact by Best Western Customer service. I did receive an email from the front office manager, but only after I responded to a survey negatively. Bottom line is that this could be a good hotel (I like the new Best Westerns) if they fixed the sound transmission issues with the doors and they were proactive in customer service/safety instead of being apologists. I wonder when I will hear back from customer service: "Thank you for contacting Best Western Customer Care regarding your recent stay. We appreciate that you have taken the time to send us your room concerns. Under serious renovation, first floor pool and gym are closed. I supposedly stayed in a recently upgraded room on the 4th floor. Beds are very uncomfortable and the "heat" blew cold air constantly. I tried to adjust the temp and even tried to shut it off all together with the thermostat on the wall but it didn't do anything. So I went to bed shivering in my hoodie and sweat pants. The door to the room had huge gaps so all the light from the hallway shone in at night. The faucet in the shower shot water every where and the plug for the drain didn't work. The whole hotel was covered in construction dust so if you sat or leaned on something you got filthy! Overall would not stay again even when renovation is complete. read more

I entered here with trepidation because our first nights stay near Boston had not been brilliant. When I walked in, it was very clean and well laid out. The girl at check in greeted me and told me that they had recently been renovated and had only been a Best Western for 3 weeks. My biggest worry with hotels is whether or not my husband will like it. For me, I'm OK as long as the place is clean. I only think of it a base. This place was a success!!! Only a 10 minute drive to Salem and 25 to Boston so very convenient. Everything seems extremely new. Breakfasts as ample and varied. They even have soy milk. The pool area is very clean and well stocked with towels. The rooms are fairly spacious and housekeeping does a good job (even cleaning up after a 4 year old 2 year old and 9 month old ) Parking is free and there are lots of spaces. WiFi is also free and we had no problems with it. Every afternoon they put cookies out. This was a big with my children. I would recommend this place and stay again. So why 4 stars and not 5? Well I really dislike counter dodgers. People at work that want to not be noticed. They have a few here that hide out of line of sight in the hopes they won't be bothered. I have worked at hotels and also in car rental and I'm familiar with this tactic. My husband had one particular girl that he said acting like he was bothering her. One evening I went to the front desk area and noticed a teenage girl crying in the corner. I told the girl at the front desk and she just looked at me blankly. So that is why they get 4 instead of 5. Stayed here over the weekend when attending a Brew Festival down the road. It should be noted that while this says North Shore Hotel the signage out front says Best Western. It appears they have been making some major changes to this hotel and from the previous reviews that confirmed it. You can tell it has been recently updated. The room we stayed in was fresh, clean, comfortable and surprisingly for as busy as the lobby was I didn't hear any noises from other rooms or even in the hallway. It was quiet. The entire hotel looks great and it appears they are still doing some work outside, but it seems as if the major construction is over. The continental breakfast was pretty standard and they have a good selection of items to choose from. We went down anticipating having to grab breakfast on the road, but found that they had waffle makers and made our own waffles which were delicious! The staff was friendly and helpful. We had to wait a little bit to get checked in but there was a group ahead of us and I think they were having a problem confirming if their rooms were ready yet. Didn't get down to the pool sadly. Planning on going back up to Salem in the fall and will definitely stay again. read more

This is a good hotel with reasonable rates. It's clean and comfy. Love the soft pillows. The breakfast is good and they have tea and coffee in the lobby and water with fruit in it. The only complaints I have are the parking area being a bit of a walk in the cold and the water pressure in the shower is a bit weak but that's probably better for the environment anyway. They do have a huge parking lot so you have parking it's just a little far to walk in the cold weather for a California girl. The staff goes above and beyond to be helpful too. read more

We asked if there was any way we could switch rooms to get away from the noise as they roomed us directly above it, we were told "they'd see what they can do" and left it at that. We stayed there five nights when we were in town visiting family. Our stay was great!! This is a very clean hotel. The rooms are big. There was plenty of room for myself, my husband and our daughter. Beds were very comfortable. Microwave and fridge worked fine. The staff were very helpful and friendly. There is a nice patio with fire pit to sit outside. The breakfast was great! Nice variety of food that changed daily. Would definitely stay here again. The only negative that I saw was that the pool was deep. (6 feet)If you have small children the shallow portion was small. This is a really nice hotel. It has nice decor. It's clean. It has a great breakfast. The reason I only gave three stars is that they charged us more at check in than the receipt we were emailed. When questioned, they said it's a 10% overcharge for incidentals & that they'd charge the correct amount when we check out. Here's the thing. They already charged the inaccurate amount as it has come out of our checking account & we are now overdrawn. They need to be honest & not put the charge through until checkout. Standard hotel except this trip had a lot of hiccups and annoyances. Rooms were ok size. Bathrooms tiny. Could barely move in them. Very poorly designed. Room was dirty upon check in. Beds were hard as a rock. Walls are quite thin. The fire pit is an attractive nuisance for the guests. Quite loud some nights with our room being directly above it. Sadly, when my kids wanted to check it out and there was nobody there at night, it was busted and didn't work. The pools heater was busted and the indoor pool temp was FREEZING! I notified the front desk night 1/4 when we were here and. The last night it still wasn't fixed. Quite disappointing since the reason we booked this hotel was for its indoor pool and free breakfast. Accused of doing drugs + sink backed up without use + toilet didn't flush + horrible customer service. Recently stayed here 8/10-8/12 for a friend's wedding. We were pleased by the clean, updated rooms and early check-in. Our enjoyment did not last long. Within one hour of being in our hotel room, the sink backed up about halfway. The toilet had to be flushed 2-4 times to actually..flush. We called downstairs and the woman at the front desk and was told someone would look into getting us some maintenance. We waited for a good while before calling back down and being told that the maintenance people were gone and we could move rooms. Silly me, I looked across the room at our recently unpacked belongings and the fact that we had to leave shortly for a pre-wedding event and we told her we'd rather stay, it'd be easier on us. So we buckled down later that night, brushed our teeth in the shower, and expected a better start the next day. We were being pretty cool about it all. My husband called downstairs the next morning. They said they'd send someone up. He called again. Nothing. Again. Nothing. He waited for more than 1-2 hours for someone to be sent up. Finally, when he called down another time they got fed up with him (I'm assuming) and just told him they'd move our room. So my husband hurriedly packed up our belongings (I was out at a store) since his groomsman duties were already started. In the middle of changing rooms, the phone rang. It was the young gentleman downstairs who told my husband that he got a complaint from housekeeping that he was smoking weed and they were sending a manager up. What? Housekeeping had not even been too our room since our arrival. Furious, my husband tried to keep cool while waiting for a manager to come "smell" our room. Of course, there was nothing and the manager apologized saying that she would give us halfprice for our first night since we had so many problems. Later, the gentleman downstairs called to apologize to my husband for accusing him of doing drugs. I was not pleased. Nor was he. Upon checkout, the man who accused us of doing drugs in our room brought it up while we were leaving. A sort of "Oh, you're the ones I..." sort of thing. I tried to be calm, but I made it clear it was so totally inappropriate of him to accuse us doing drugs--that I was there with family and friends and have a reputation I need to uphold as a business owner. That is not something to be wrong about. He was bumbling and illogical and I left, FUMING over the whole experience. When we got to the car, we looked over the invoice and realized that they didn't take the discount off for the first night as we were told. My husband went back in. The guy said, "You paid less than the others in the wedding block." So basically, no discount. Uh, no. SORRY. Not working for me. My husband demanded after a third return to the front desk and he ended up just taking the first night off. THE. LEAST. THEY. COULD. DO. The reason why I paid less to begin with was because I called to make a reservation and the guy making the reservation told me he didn't know how to complete it, but could make half the reservation and then have a manager call me to complete it. He also told me I would get an emailed receipt. Neither happened. I called back and, I think, got a manager who was trying to rectify the issue by offering me a discount. Still, I'm grateful I have no reason to ever go to Danvers again, but if I did, I sure as hell wouldn't stay here. read more
