We had a few issues while staying at this location. First, house keeping literally barged into our room at 8 AM while we were still sleeping. There was no knock. She simply used the key and came in. I had to tell her to leave. Secondly, the indoor "heated" pool was an ice bath. All of the kids were shivering and could barely stay in for more than 10 minutes. Not to mention the pool deck was soaking wet, flooded with water. Children were slipping every where. It was very dangerous. The room itself was nice but we were unhappy with the quality of service for the price ($130 for one night).

Great hotel ! Clean ! Friendly staff ! Cleaned our room on our second day while we were out , and gave is fresh towels ! Deff not used to that at most hotels we stay at we have to ask for towels and they never clean / take our garbage in between ! Breckfest in the morning is a must ! Lots of options ! Very clean dining area ! Hot chocolate is offered at the coffee stations ! Which is great for a pregnant woman who cant have caffeine like myself LOL ! The pool isnt big but it's a cute clean pool ! With extra towels if needed !Definitely would recommend and if ever in the area again ,will be coming back !

IMHO, this hotel is in a range of an economy hotel. When we stayed here, they were working on an exterior wall to update the looks. Staff are sufficiently nice and friendly (in a NE sort of way). Front desk staff are pleasant and accommodating. They gave us some very helpful suggestions and pertinent information accessing Boston attractions. Very good sleep quality with quiet room and comfortable beds. We had a two-queen bed room with mini frig and microwave. We could've used a little bigger TV (24 in?). It was roomy enough, though. Perhaps, it could use some updating to freshen up the looks throughout this hotel. It gave out sort of a gloomy feeling since carpet looked faded and worn out. Could use some detailed cleaning since I found some food particles on the carpet floor around corners. Bathroom was updated and nice. When we were here, it was too early in the season for outside pool to be open, but indoor salt-water pool was nice. Breakfast was very decent, but very busy with presence of a school group when we stayed. It looked more relaxed and quieter in later hours (after 8:30 am). There are some good choices of restaurants and eateries in the area. One Italian restaurant is within a comfortable walking distance if you'd like to stroll in the evening. Overall very good value for money in this area.

"Yes there is construction, But..." So I only booked for one night and after reading previous reviews was slightly worried about the construction. I was only sleeping there and was leaving early in the morning. The lobby is pretty much gutted along with the lower level as they are renovating the entire hotel. Not a problem in my opinion. Our room was brand new and modern with a great mattress and really good pillows. This is all I need in a hotel of this level. It is not the Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton, but it IS a reasonably priced hotel in good proximity to Boston and the North Shore. The new rooms are GREAT! and much improved from when it was a Comfort Inn. I had stayed here twice before when it was a Comfort Inn, and the rooms were kind of dismal. The staff were all very welcoming and helpful and I commend them for keeping up their morale and professionalism during the overhaul of the hotel and what I am sure many complaints from other customers. On every website this hotel is listed on that I saw, there are numerous warnings of the construction, so if that bothers you, stay away. If you want a newly renovated room with great staff, then stay here. I can't wait to see it when it is finished. I will be back again and again...

The hotel is in renovation so please expect it to look like a construction site. The wifi sadly is non existent even though you can connect to it you'll be dropped constantly by poor signal. On the plus side Robert at the front desk and everyone we met at the hotel was extremely nice and accommodating as best they could. I think although the hotel is lacking now once it's complete it could be a 5 star rating!

They're doing renovations on the entire building, and the only acknowledgement to guests is a little card in the room saying "BIG NEWS! Sorry the windows are covered in plastic, but we promise it'll be worth it!" I'm certain this will make those staying in this hotel for just one night incredibly happy. That was sarcasm in case you didn't clock it. Sorry for a poor press, but I know you can do better! Please try harder!

Make sure to always bring your room key card for swipe access. Free breakfast in the hotel lobby that starts 6:30 AM on weekdays and 7 AM on weekends. No EV charging available, but free overnight parking. Appearances wise, the rooms are slightly newer/nicer than the Hampton inn next door. In reality, you can see how dated this hotel is: the corner pipe paint is peeling off, slow toilet flush, tub is updated, etc. I talked to the hotel and they do a refresh every 8-9 years. I think this hotel has been around for 30 years and it is the oldest hotel amongst the three: Hampton inn, homewood suites, and springhill suites. Breakfast selection changes on a daily basis, but it is essentially the same as the Hampton Inn next door. I wonder if they run the same menu on a daily basis with slight variation. Public bathroom is also located on the first floor if you need to use it. Nice lobby area. If you need anything like extra towels or trash bag, you have to go downstairs and ask from the receptionist. I don't think they have enough staff to send stuff to your room. Love the fact that the room has pots, pans, plates, utensils, dishwasher, etc for convenient kitchen needs.

He provided us with maps of the downtown Salem area for our trip Friday, gave great recommendations on places to eat, and overall was very pleasent to speak with. We secured room 423, and directions on the property to get there. Lots of parking. The room was on the second floor without an elevator so you needed to bring your luggage up a few lights of steps. The room was BIG. Offered a kitchenette, living room area, large king bed, vanity, shower and shampoo/conditioner/body wash. There were dishes to use and dishwasher with pod. We arrived and were directed to a suite directly at the back of the property which is adjacent to route 1. Now, you are so close it's like you're on the shoulder of the highway. There is no soundproofing of windows and no sound barriers to blunt the noise, which was deafening with folks racing and revving their engines nonstop. There were cigarette butts just outside our door, and the room smelled dank and smoky -- almost like there had been a flood at one time. Everything seemed to have a ding in it -- chipped furniture, stains on the couch, a cabinet hanging on its hinges. We could hear people above us clearly, and much too clearly at that! There was also a lack of security. There were sliding doors that were not initially locked and there was a flimsy bar to prevent the door from opening that looked like it would break pretty easily if forced. The lock on the front door was funky -- sometimes I couldn't lock/unlock it and the screws were loose at the bolt. Maybe the surrounding area once had some life to it, but we drove through some abandoned big box stores that had transients living in the parking lots, which didn't make us feel great. Because you're not in a hotel with a traditional front desk with security personnel, you are more vulnerable, so this was a serious consideration. We tried to call the front desk to ask if there was another room available, but the phone didn't work! We sat there for a minute looking the place over, listening to the whizzing of engines and considering all the faults of the room and decided to leave ASAP. I will say that once we drove back to the main building, the woman behind the front desk was very nice and didn't give us a hassle about leaving. This is the worst property we've stayed at while being Marriott Bonvoy members for 20 years. Not sure if just our room was the pits or they all are, but based on our experience, I would certainly AVOID this place if you want a decent night's sleep and a feeling of security.

I'm not someone who rushes to Yelp, but this stay earned the effort…read more I recently stayed at The Merchant for the second time, and whatever magic existed during my first visit is gone. The biggest issue: the hotel hosted a large, ticketed public event that completely took over the main lobby--with zero advance notice to guests. I woke up to a lobby packed with strangers and nowhere to sit or gather with my family. I've never stayed at a hotel that allows a public event to fully overrun its only common area without warning paying guests. And no, "just go somewhere else" isn't an option--there is nowhere else. There are no additional common spaces and no elevator. Since we were meeting elderly family members, climbing three to four flights of stairs to our room wasn't possible. The lobby being unusable wasn't a minor inconvenience; it was a dealbreaker. Operationally, things only went downhill. Check-in is at 4pm, but arrive after 5pm and there's no one on-site to check you in. Checkout, however, is rigidly 11am. Our room was never cleaned during the stay, despite leaving the "please clean" tag on the door. Because of the limited staffing hours, we couldn't even get fresh towels. Then there's the mouse. I saw one in the common area and notified staff. Nothing was done. Food is left out uncovered for guests, which I promptly avoided--because "boutique hotel meets rodent buffet" isn't really my vibe. What's also new: some sort of train or underground rumbling that shakes the building roughly every hour, offering a front-row seat to what feels like an earthquake simulator. If this were a budget motel or a Holiday Inn, I might shrug and move on. But this is a $500-per-night hotel, and at that price point, these issues are unacceptable. Until these problems are addressed, I wouldn't recommend staying here--and I certainly won't be returning.

Additionally, it's only a 10 minute walk from the train station. The amenities all seem pretty new as well. The only thing that was annoying is our key cards stopped working 3-4 times. We did have a car, and while the attached garage made things convenient, the daily parking fee felt high for what it is (almost $30 a day). Just a heads-up. Also, there is self-park, and at risk of sounding cheap, here's a tip to save you on some tips... valet is optional, and I don't think I've ever been in a hotel where it's less necessary. Self-park is the same price, but you spare yourself the constant tipping, which feels like one more tiny cash grab unless maybe the garage fills up at certain times and they have to move cars elsewhere. The room was nice enough for a short stay, though some acceptable / common deficiencies are starting to show -- scuffed walls, certain outlets loosening up so the prongs don't stay in well, one bulb burned out, etc. But the beds were comfortable enough, the bedding seemed clean, the bathroom was also clean and the shower worked well, and the room overall still had a reasonably new look and style to it. The pool was also clean, warm, and the overall pool area looked well maintained with plenty of clean towels available and a good amount of seating. The pool deck definitely gets a little slick when wet, so watch your step. Breakfast was almost exactly what you'd expect from similar U.S. chain hotels -- pre-made omelets or scrambled eggs depending on the day, home fries, paper-thin bacon or sausage patties, a few cereals and yogurts, a make-your-own waffle station, a couple fruit options, a push-button juice machine, instant oatmeal, etc. There's a good amount of seating, and a handful of tables have their own TVs (though you may have to hunt for a remote, and you might get some cross-room interference if someone else points theirs the wrong way). One interesting detail: breakfast isn't on the ground floor, and you can't reach it via the elevator without a keycard. I assume that's intentional to reduce non-guest walk-ins. Overall, I'd stay here again for the location and reasonable price -- just with the caveat to budget for the nearly $30/day parking or have a workaround ready. The convenience makes it tolerable, but it's definitely something to be aware of.

She and much of my family really like this place and rave about it, but my overall first impression was definitely a mixed bag. My mom made the reservation for Saturday at 4:45pm in the dining room. We arrived a little early, so she showed me around the beautifully renovated building. When we checked in with someone, they redirected us to the bar area downstairs as they were holding a private event in the main dining area. Okay, not a big deal to us. However I could understand if someone else might get a little annoyed at being told they had to go to the bar area when they specifically asked for the dining room on their reservation. I have to say that I do love the downstairs bar area, it's classy and has a vintage speakeasy vibe. We were quickly greeted by one of the guys working the bar who was super nice and did a great job. For a drink I started with their version of an espresso martini, which was a good start to the food experience and gave me high hopes. They brought us out some popovers which to me were just okay. For an appetizer we got some buffalo chicken dip, which was quite delicious. For dinner my mom got a Caesar salad (which I tried a little bit of and thought was good) and a flatbread pizza that was on special. I decided to be a little bougie and went with the braised short ribs, and I regret to say that the dish fell flat for me. The short rib did come apart okay when I stuck my fork in it, but it was kind of chewy, bland and overall really didn't have much flavor. The menu also states that the short rib is served with broccolini (which is a milder, sweeter version of the green vegetable) but it came with regular plain broccoli instead, which I was also quite honestly disappointed by. With all that being said the polenta was my favorite thing on the plate. I'm a little conflicted. The place is beautiful and the staff is so nice. But with how much it was hyped up to me, I was a little let down. I'm kind of thinking that I should've went with another dish? I really want to truly love this place, so I'm sure I'll be back with family at some point to give them another chance.
