We reserved a room at the Marriott Residence Inn (Boston North Shore/Danvers) that was about a half hour outside of Boston. They were having a social mixer in the lobby, so we filled up on salad, chips and salsa, spanakopita, and baklava. I really like how spacious the Residence Inn rooms are. They're essentially sizable studio apartments.

We were looking for a dog friendly hotel on the North Shore, and as we usually stay at Marriott's, booked a night at the Residence Inn (Boston/North Shore) which is located in Danvers. Their website says, "Explore nearby historic sites located less than ten miles away such as Salem and the Salem Witch Museum or take a quick trip into downtown Boston for a night at Fenway Park or TD Garden." But visitors should note that it can take 20 minutes or more to drive to historic Salem, and an hour or more in traffic to drive to Boston. That said, here are the positives: * Dog Friendly! * Large suites with full kitchens - good for extended stays. * Our room looked clean and updated. * Lots of closet space. * Close to highways such as Route 1 and 95. * Free breakfast each morning. And the negatives: * Did I say close to highways? I meant adjacent to a noisy highway. * The bathrooms are very, very, very small (as in it's difficult to close the door when you maneuver inside). * Rooms are dark and only one window (albeit a large slider) opens. * The breakfast eggs taste like they are from a mix. There aren't many dog friendly hotels in this area, and these units are clearly better for extended stays, so this motel deserves a rating bump for those reasons. It should be a 3 to 3.5 star motel, but since it's a great place for dogs, I'm giving this spot a four star rating.

    Trash cans are frequently full.

Man, I was totally bummed with our latest stay. The first time we stayed here the renovations did not interfere with our stay but this time it was unpleasant. Chicken bones littered all grassy areas between and around buildings 2 & 6 which made it almost impossible to comfortably walk our dogs. The doggie poo bag dispenser was useless because it was empty the whole week. We constantly had bugs in our room....gnats can be very annoying when you're trying to sleep. The hot tub was gone and the pool/ basketball area under construction. The trash bins were packed most of the time. One morning I walked out and the bin (located 3 feet from our door) had trash overflowing out of it, a bag stacked on top and towels scattered on the ground at the base. We initially had to change rooms because the internet and phone did not work in the first room since the jack was about to fall out of the wall. There is no way this property would meet Marriott standards in its current condition. **The employees are still professional and helpful. The breakfast area is completed.

Ants were all over the kitchen bathroom rug and furniture! Bed bugs in my bed!! I got bit!

Was charged additional money after being quoted a smaller price. They refused to refund the $50.

They're doing renovations on the entire building, and the only acknowledgement to guests is a little card in the room saying "BIG NEWS! Sorry the windows are covered in plastic, but we promise it'll be worth it!" I'm certain this will make those staying in this hotel for just one night incredibly happy. That was sarcasm in case you didn't clock it. Sorry for a poor press, but I know you can do better! Please try harder!

Make sure to always bring your room key card for swipe access. Free breakfast in the hotel lobby that starts 6:30 AM on weekdays and 7 AM on weekends. No EV charging available, but free overnight parking. Appearances wise, the rooms are slightly newer/nicer than the Hampton inn next door. In reality, you can see how dated this hotel is: the corner pipe paint is peeling off, slow toilet flush, tub is updated, etc. I talked to the hotel and they do a refresh every 8-9 years. I think this hotel has been around for 30 years and it is the oldest hotel amongst the three: Hampton inn, homewood suites, and springhill suites. Breakfast selection changes on a daily basis, but it is essentially the same as the Hampton Inn next door. I wonder if they run the same menu on a daily basis with slight variation. Public bathroom is also located on the first floor if you need to use it. Nice lobby area. If you need anything like extra towels or trash bag, you have to go downstairs and ask from the receptionist. I don't think they have enough staff to send stuff to your room. Love the fact that the room has pots, pans, plates, utensils, dishwasher, etc for convenient kitchen needs.

The biggest issue: the hotel hosted a large, ticketed public event that completely took over the main lobby--with zero advance notice to guests. I woke up to a lobby packed with strangers and nowhere to sit or gather with my family. I've never stayed at a hotel that allows a public event to fully overrun its only common area without warning paying guests. And no, "just go somewhere else" isn't an option--there is nowhere else. There are no additional common spaces and no elevator. Since we were meeting elderly family members, climbing three to four flights of stairs to our room wasn't possible. The lobby being unusable wasn't a minor inconvenience; it was a dealbreaker. Operationally, things only went downhill. Check-in is at 4pm, but arrive after 5pm and there's no one on-site to check you in. Checkout, however, is rigidly 11am. Our room was never cleaned during the stay, despite leaving the "please clean" tag on the door. Because of the limited staffing hours, we couldn't even get fresh towels. Then there's the mouse. I saw one in the common area and notified staff. Nothing was done. Food is left out uncovered for guests, which I promptly avoided--because "boutique hotel meets rodent buffet" isn't really my vibe. What's also new: some sort of train or underground rumbling that shakes the building roughly every hour, offering a front-row seat to what feels like an earthquake simulator. If this were a budget motel or a Holiday Inn, I might shrug and move on. But this is a $500-per-night hotel, and at that price point, these issues are unacceptable. Until these problems are addressed, I wouldn't recommend staying here--and I certainly won't be returning.

We did have a car, and while the attached garage made things convenient, the daily parking fee felt high for what it is (almost $30 a day). Just a heads-up. Also, there is self-park, and at risk of sounding cheap, here's a tip to save you on some tips... valet is optional, and I don't think I've ever been in a hotel where it's less necessary. Self-park is the same price, but you spare yourself the constant tipping, which feels like one more tiny cash grab unless maybe the garage fills up at certain times and they have to move cars elsewhere. The room was nice enough for a short stay, though some acceptable / common deficiencies are starting to show -- scuffed walls, certain outlets loosening up so the prongs don't stay in well, one bulb burned out, etc. But the beds were comfortable enough, the bedding seemed clean, the bathroom was also clean and the shower worked well, and the room overall still had a reasonably new look and style to it. The pool was also clean, warm, and the overall pool area looked well maintained with plenty of clean towels available and a good amount of seating. The pool deck definitely gets a little slick when wet, so watch your step. Breakfast was almost exactly what you'd expect from similar U.S. chain hotels -- pre-made omelets or scrambled eggs depending on the day, home fries, paper-thin bacon or sausage patties, a few cereals and yogurts, a make-your-own waffle station, a couple fruit options, a push-button juice machine, instant oatmeal, etc. There's a good amount of seating, and a handful of tables have their own TVs (though you may have to hunt for a remote, and you might get some cross-room interference if someone else points theirs the wrong way). One interesting detail: breakfast isn't on the ground floor, and you can't reach it via the elevator without a keycard. I assume that's intentional to reduce non-guest walk-ins. Overall, I'd stay here again for the location and reasonable price -- just with the caveat to budget for the nearly $30/day parking or have a workaround ready. The convenience makes it tolerable, but it's definitely something to be aware of.

And they even split the deposits in half so we didn't have two deposits for the same stay. This was a seamless process. All staff we encountered were incredibly friendly and informative. She and much of my family really like this place and rave about it, but my overall first impression was definitely a mixed bag. My mom made the reservation for Saturday at 4:45pm in the dining room. We arrived a little early, so she showed me around the beautifully renovated building. When we checked in with someone, they redirected us to the bar area downstairs as they were holding a private event in the main dining area. Okay, not a big deal to us. However I could understand if someone else might get a little annoyed at being told they had to go to the bar area when they specifically asked for the dining room on their reservation. I have to say that I do love the downstairs bar area, it's classy and has a vintage speakeasy vibe. We were quickly greeted by one of the guys working the bar who was super nice and did a great job. For a drink I started with their version of an espresso martini, which was a good start to the food experience and gave me high hopes. They brought us out some popovers which to me were just okay. For an appetizer we got some buffalo chicken dip, which was quite delicious. For dinner my mom got a Caesar salad (which I tried a little bit of and thought was good) and a flatbread pizza that was on special. I decided to be a little bougie and went with the braised short ribs, and I regret to say that the dish fell flat for me. The short rib did come apart okay when I stuck my fork in it, but it was kind of chewy, bland and overall really didn't have much flavor. The menu also states that the short rib is served with broccolini (which is a milder, sweeter version of the green vegetable) but it came with regular plain broccoli instead, which I was also quite honestly disappointed by. With all that being said the polenta was my favorite thing on the plate. I'm a little conflicted. The place is beautiful and the staff is so nice. But with how much it was hyped up to me, I was a little let down. I'm kind of thinking that I should've went with another dish? I really want to truly love this place, so I'm sure I'll be back with family at some point to give them another chance.
