Unfortunately, things just keep getting worse here…read more Once again, staff are wonderful. However, management is clearly out of touch. They're doing renovations on the entire building, and the only acknowledgement to guests is a little card in the room saying "BIG NEWS! Sorry the windows are covered in plastic, but we promise it'll be worth it!" I'm certain this will make those staying in this hotel for just one night incredibly happy. That was sarcasm in case you didn't clock it. Sorry for a poor press, but I know you can do better! Please try harder!

Make sure to always bring your room key card for swipe access. Free breakfast in the hotel lobby that starts 6:30 AM on weekdays and 7 AM on weekends. No EV charging available, but free overnight parking. Appearances wise, the rooms are slightly newer/nicer than the Hampton inn next door. In reality, you can see how dated this hotel is: the corner pipe paint is peeling off, slow toilet flush, tub is updated, etc. I talked to the hotel and they do a refresh every 8-9 years. I think this hotel has been around for 30 years and it is the oldest hotel amongst the three: Hampton inn, homewood suites, and springhill suites. Breakfast selection changes on a daily basis, but it is essentially the same as the Hampton Inn next door. I wonder if they run the same menu on a daily basis with slight variation. Public bathroom is also located on the first floor if you need to use it. Nice lobby area. If you need anything like extra towels or trash bag, you have to go downstairs and ask from the receptionist. I don't think they have enough staff to send stuff to your room. Love the fact that the room has pots, pans, plates, utensils, dishwasher, etc for convenient kitchen needs.

What a comfortable place to stay while visiting Massachusetts. We were greeted kindly by Danny upon…read morearrival. He provided us with maps of the downtown Salem area for our trip Friday, gave great recommendations on places to eat, and overall was very pleasent to speak with. We secured room 423, and directions on the property to get there. Lots of parking. The room was on the second floor without an elevator so you needed to bring your luggage up a few lights of steps. The room was BIG. Offered a kitchenette, living room area, large king bed, vanity, shower and shampoo/conditioner/body wash. There were dishes to use and dishwasher with pod. Very clean, and perfect for what we needed.

We arrived and were directed to a suite directly at the back of the property which is adjacent to route 1. Now, you are so close it's like you're on the shoulder of the highway. There is no soundproofing of windows and no sound barriers to blunt the noise, which was deafening with folks racing and revving their engines nonstop. There were cigarette butts just outside our door, and the room smelled dank and smoky -- almost like there had been a flood at one time. Everything seemed to have a ding in it -- chipped furniture, stains on the couch, a cabinet hanging on its hinges. We could hear people above us clearly, and much too clearly at that! There was also a lack of security. There were sliding doors that were not initially locked and there was a flimsy bar to prevent the door from opening that looked like it would break pretty easily if forced. The lock on the front door was funky -- sometimes I couldn't lock/unlock it and the screws were loose at the bolt. Maybe the surrounding area once had some life to it, but we drove through some abandoned big box stores that had transients living in the parking lots, which didn't make us feel great. Because you're not in a hotel with a traditional front desk with security personnel, you are more vulnerable, so this was a serious consideration. We tried to call the front desk to ask if there was another room available, but the phone didn't work! We sat there for a minute looking the place over, listening to the whizzing of engines and considering all the faults of the room and decided to leave ASAP. I will say that once we drove back to the main building, the woman behind the front desk was very nice and didn't give us a hassle about leaving. This is the worst property we've stayed at while being Marriott Bonvoy members for 20 years. Not sure if just our room was the pits or they all are, but based on our experience, I would certainly AVOID this place if you want a decent night's sleep and a feeling of security.

I'm not someone who rushes to Yelp, but this stay earned the effort…read more I recently stayed at The Merchant for the second time, and whatever magic existed during my first visit is gone. The biggest issue: the hotel hosted a large, ticketed public event that completely took over the main lobby--with zero advance notice to guests. I woke up to a lobby packed with strangers and nowhere to sit or gather with my family. I've never stayed at a hotel that allows a public event to fully overrun its only common area without warning paying guests. And no, "just go somewhere else" isn't an option--there is nowhere else. There are no additional common spaces and no elevator. Since we were meeting elderly family members, climbing three to four flights of stairs to our room wasn't possible. The lobby being unusable wasn't a minor inconvenience; it was a dealbreaker. Operationally, things only went downhill. Check-in is at 4pm, but arrive after 5pm and there's no one on-site to check you in. Checkout, however, is rigidly 11am. Our room was never cleaned during the stay, despite leaving the "please clean" tag on the door. Because of the limited staffing hours, we couldn't even get fresh towels. Then there's the mouse. I saw one in the common area and notified staff. Nothing was done. Food is left out uncovered for guests, which I promptly avoided--because "boutique hotel meets rodent buffet" isn't really my vibe. What's also new: some sort of train or underground rumbling that shakes the building roughly every hour, offering a front-row seat to what feels like an earthquake simulator. If this were a budget motel or a Holiday Inn, I might shrug and move on. But this is a $500-per-night hotel, and at that price point, these issues are unacceptable. Until these problems are addressed, I wouldn't recommend staying here--and I certainly won't be returning.

Additionally, it's only a 10 minute walk from the train station. The amenities all seem pretty new as well. The only thing that was annoying is our key cards stopped working 3-4 times. We did have a car, and while the attached garage made things convenient, the daily parking fee felt high for what it is (almost $30 a day). Just a heads-up. Also, there is self-park, and at risk of sounding cheap, here's a tip to save you on some tips... valet is optional, and I don't think I've ever been in a hotel where it's less necessary. Self-park is the same price, but you spare yourself the constant tipping, which feels like one more tiny cash grab unless maybe the garage fills up at certain times and they have to move cars elsewhere. The room was nice enough for a short stay, though some acceptable / common deficiencies are starting to show -- scuffed walls, certain outlets loosening up so the prongs don't stay in well, one bulb burned out, etc. But the beds were comfortable enough, the bedding seemed clean, the bathroom was also clean and the shower worked well, and the room overall still had a reasonably new look and style to it. The pool was also clean, warm, and the overall pool area looked well maintained with plenty of clean towels available and a good amount of seating. The pool deck definitely gets a little slick when wet, so watch your step. Breakfast was almost exactly what you'd expect from similar U.S. chain hotels -- pre-made omelets or scrambled eggs depending on the day, home fries, paper-thin bacon or sausage patties, a few cereals and yogurts, a make-your-own waffle station, a couple fruit options, a push-button juice machine, instant oatmeal, etc. There's a good amount of seating, and a handful of tables have their own TVs (though you may have to hunt for a remote, and you might get some cross-room interference if someone else points theirs the wrong way). One interesting detail: breakfast isn't on the ground floor, and you can't reach it via the elevator without a keycard. I assume that's intentional to reduce non-guest walk-ins. Overall, I'd stay here again for the location and reasonable price -- just with the caveat to budget for the nearly $30/day parking or have a workaround ready. The convenience makes it tolerable, but it's definitely something to be aware of.
