After finishing the Guinness Storehouse tour, I really wanted to try some traditional fish n' chips for lunch, as it was my first time in Ireland. I found Beshoff like a total tourist; through an ad on the back of a map of Dublin that I got from my hotel. They were touted as the oldest running traditional fish n' chip shop in the city. Since it was the oldest, and conveniently on the way to the hotel I was staying at, my mom and I took the LUAS and stopped at Abbey Street station and walked through the bustling crowds of fuel protesters towards The Spire to get to Beshoff's. The restaurant had a fun black and white tile finish with an old-school diner vibe. They are a counter-service restaurant, so after browsing the menu, I ordered the traditional cod and chips, and my mom got some calamari and coleslaw. We were luckily able to find a seat at the corner booth closest to the front window of the place, as we arrived right before the lunch crowd started rushing in. My cod order was perfectly fried with a crisp outer breaded layer and light flaky layers of fish on the inside. The portion of fish was huge, and the entire filet was nicely and evenly fried, no soggy sections at all. However, the only issue I had was that a good chunk of the fish didn't have much flavor, it all just had a perfect texture. I had to really douse the fish in the lil' cup of tartar sauce to take it to flavor town. The tail section of the fish was probably the best part for me, as it was a thinner cut of fish, so it was extra crispy and much more succulent. The fries were also kind of a let down for me, they were thick and steak cut styled, so there was a lot of potato in every bite, but they just felt too dry and starchy for my tastes. They reminded me of eating old leftover fries, because they were was missing that distinct crunch and feel that fries have when you eat them fresh out of the frier. The best thing we ordered was the calamari. It was AMAZING, with a delectably crispy outer breaded layer followed by a nice and soft inner squid texture; it had just the right amount of chew and flavor. read more

This was exactly what my wife was looking for. She had the cod fish and chips and I had a side salad. She said it was delicious. My side salad lettuce was kind of wilted but was plenty good. Located just a couple shops down from our hotel it was the first stop for dinner when we arrived to Ireland! after a day of travel the casual relaxed environment was perfect! They can make most things gluten free and I felt safe for my celiac needs. While traveling we know cross contact is a risk, however this risk felt safe to take. I greatly enjoyed my Northern Dublin Inner City visit to Beshoff's for some Irish Fish & Chops. They make the food fresh so it takes about 10 minutes to get. Very fresh and not greasy. You get a lighter sauce-- not the heavier tartar sauce that you get in the USA. Staff is friendly and helpful. The ambience is very colkegiate and fun. Food portions are huge! And the flavor is spot on! Very glad we decided to give it a try!

We were really excited to find out that we might be able to enjoy gluten-free fish and chips while in Dublin, and this place was definitely worth the visit. In addition to several options for the fried fish, they also have calamari rings and king prawns (and chicken fingers if you're not into fish -- why come here for that though? But you do you babes). They also have onion rings -- I don't eat a ton of fried food but I haven't had onion rings since going gluten-free (16 years now!) so I was excited and ordered those too in addition to my GF calamari rings. The seafood was extremely crispy and not oily, and the fries were the short chunky kind, which made a great contrast to the super crispy calamari. My husband also got a side of coleslaw, which was tiny but also fairly cheap at just a bit over 2 euros per portion. We spent €73 for the four of us and left pleasantly full and very satisfied with our lunch. There is lots of seating, though it's slightly cramped in some spots. The staff was a little harried (understandably, since it was lunch time and it's a busy location) but helpful and polite. The tables could have maybe used a little cleaning in between customers but the turnaround is quite fast so they might not always be able to keep up with it. I must say I'm a convert - I vote Beshoff as Dublin's best fish and chips (sorry Leo), if only for its prime location smack bang in the middle of O'Connell Street. I don't know how many times I've walked past this particular branch, promising myself I'd pay a visit one day. Today was the day, and I swear I am a changed woman! Everyone who visits Dublin should go to Beshoff's O'Connell St because it is a beacon of good and hope and light in the centre of a (let's face it) pretty disappointing main street, for a capital city, anyway. Don't even bother sitting downstairs, if you do you have wasted your Beshoff experience! Downstairs is unimpressive and looks just like BK, but upstairs is truly heaven! Try for a window seat if possible, it really does afford a wonderful view of Dublin's main drag. Great for people watching. The upstairs area is large and bright and on the back wall there are some rather elegant-looking stained glass windows. Now for the food: I have to say, I think it's healthier than Leo's, although let's face it, any fish and chip meal in Ireland is going to leave your arteries heaving for the next couple of weeks. The fish and chips come with lemon (big bonus in my opinion) and the portions are very filling, to say the least! As for the Beshoff tradition, apparently the guy who established the chain moved over here from Russia in 1913. He sold fish and chips his whole life and lived to the grand old age of 1003 or something. His father lived to some other equally improbable vintage, and his father did the same. A little common sense here... these people were living in 18th and 19th Century Russia - think Crime and Punishment - death, dark, cold, and hunger, washed down with copious amounts of vodka. But who really knows? Maybe they did live to the ripe old ages quoted in the Beshoff history section, or maybe it's just an old wives' tale. Note: all my recent vacation in Ireland Yelp reviews will have the same 1st paragraph preamble, for just the review itself skip to the 2nd paragraph. On a whirlwind 2 week vacation to Ireland, the girlfriend & I tried to see & experience absolutely as much of this incredible land as we could. We did not accomplish every last activity we wished we could have on our rather ambitious itinerary. Nonetheless, we did discover a land of numerous stunning & magical wonders. We did see a land of unending natural beauty. We did learn of a land with a monumentally long history of trials, tragedies & triumphs. We did get to meet many kind, humorous, warm & generous people. Our vacation to Ireland was just 2 weeks, but that was time enough to know this is a land easy to love & a land to be sorely missed. Walking along Upper O'Connell Street on our way to our next little adventure, the girlfriend & I were looking to get a quick to bite to eat. Decent, cheap & fast was our goal for food on the go & Beshoff looked promising. Ordering at the front counter was straightforward & prices were reasonable. I ordered the Fresh Cod with chips. After ordering we went upstairs to find a table. We got a table next to a window which provided some nice views of the street below. Our food was brought to our table upstairs before long. According to the literature prominently on display on my food tray, Beshoff has been serving fish in Dublin for nearly a century & members of the Beshoff family frequently live longer than a century thanks to the miracles of eating fish. I cannot attest to the efficacy of Beshoff fish & chips at granting immortality, but it was very tasty. The fish was flaky & moist with a nice, not-too-thick fried breading. The chips were good too, puffy soft & steaming hot on the inside. We enjoyed the view from our table for a bit, chowed down our food & then were off to our next endeavor. Beshoff turned out to be pretty much what we were looking at that moment. While not the best fish & chips I've ever had, I would definitely rate the food here well above average. Prices are not expensive & food comes out fairly quickly. For a bonus, the upstairs dining area is a comfortable, clean space with cool Dublin city views. read more

This place is fine. Not bad not great. The fish is good because the breaking thin. It's also "flavorless" meaning aside from the taste of the cod, lemon juice and tartar sauce, the batter didn't have much other flavor which is fine for me, I like my food a little on the bland side. If you like more flavor, do add salt! I got my cod with salad, which was good. It had lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and onion. Nice light balance for the fried fish. It also came with coleslaw which I don't really like in general so I didn't eat much of it. If you see an area with tourism pamphlets, look for Beshoffs. There's a coupon in there for a cod meal (includes coffee or tea) for 10€. Nothing is substitute with that offer. read more

Beshoff's is a fish and chip institution. It narrowly pips Leo Burdock's for me as the best fish and chip shop in Dublin. The chips are incredible. Big, chunky wedges of fluffy potato hand cut and made fresh in front of you. And speaking of fresh, their fish is fleeted in from Howth after being freshly caught what tastes like only a few hours earlier. One of my favourite meals from anywhere in the world is the cod and chips from Beshoff's on a Sunday evening. Absolutely divine. Homey food as it should be. read more

OK I'll admit they're nice chips. Really very good even. These are quality chips, traditionally cooked and with that great vinegar that vapours up your nose when you unwrap them. And the fish is good too, it does have to be said. But I have to disagree with Jo - Burdocks are better... they just are! But I'll certainly give Beshoffs a close second. And this particular one has a nice restauranty place where you can sit and have your chips. Whether Burdocks or Beshoff everyone who visits Dublin should have these chips because they really surpass chips you will get anywhere else! read more

You can tell when the fry guy doesn't know his business, or if they try to reuse the oil too many times. The fish was fried to perfection. It's always a strange experience eating in the Beschoff's on O'Connell St. Not an unpleasant experience mind, but one is not usually accustomed to eating fish and chips in such salubrious surroundings. Tiled floors, a table and chairs, metal cutlery: Beschoff Restaurant really is at variance from the more common surroundings of fish and chips consumption - sitting on a wall in the freezing cold, grease congealing rapidly on your hands. The fish and chips in the Beschoff Restaurant on O'Connell St are essentially the exact same as the fish and chips that you'd get from any of the other Beschoffs' except that they're on a plate. And the prices would make you balk completely if you were in a chipper, but are fairly standard for a sit-down lunch in town. And I think that this is mainly due to the economic slump, but the demand for cod is now way down internationally, so the fish stocks may possibly recover, but the more immediate side effect is that Beschoff's and other chippers aren't charging the extortionate prices for cod that were being sought a couple of years ago, so thank heavens for that. I have to admit I was skeptical. The size and location of this restaurant had me thinking, "this must be like the McDonald's of fish and chips." It's huge and it is right in the middle of the city center and it seems like it's probably a chain. Groan. A friend of mine wanted to try it out though so I said what the hell. We had such high hopes for this place, the feel was a bit cliche, yet it was very appropriate? The fish and chips are pretty decent but like so many places, overly-breaded. The chips at least were very good, if you like thick cut ones... sadly not everyone does. And the cole slaw was overly creamy. I had the cod and chip meal because it was the cheapest thing on the menu at €7.50, but I wouldn't do it again. I've found the food here to be unremarkable. Perhaps that is too generous and I should say that the food is unpleasant. Somewhere in-between. I can say that the location is terrible, unless you like being pestered by begging Roma while you eat. We were eating in and two beggars came in and made their rounds. This was uncomfortable and unpleasant since they would not take "no" for an answer, at least not right away. Staff seemed not bothered by this, as it does (or perhaps did, as it's been awhile since I've caught the bus near there) seem to be a regular occurrence. This was by far the worst fish and chips we have ever had. The fish was so incredibly greasy and soggy. It mostly just tasted like the oil it was fried in; we ended up throwing almost all of it away. The chips were plain and kind of greasy too, but much better than the fish. My husband and I are not very picky eaters and we were very hungry, but this was just plain terrible (sorry). I am not a big fish and chips person to begin with, but this place was near the hotel I was staying at when I first got to Dublin and I had been told I needed to do fish and chips here at least once. The chips were good (which is why I gave it two stars), everything else completely lackluster. It took me forever to get my food. Literally, I am still waiting on it as I type this. Even doused with lemon juice and salt, there wasn't much flavour to be had from the fish, I *know* it's deep fried, but this was kind've mushy and bland. The chips were nice and tasty though... I'd say I'll come back again, but try something new this time. The place was lovely and clean and the guy behind the counter was pleasant, so it has that going for it... Plus the upstairs has a lot of seating and some great window seats where you can people spot. My favourite today was watching a couple just off the bus from IKEA having a hissy fit at one another. Ehhhhhhhhhh - I was really looking forward to having fish 'n chips after coming to Dublin one year ago. I had gone to Beshoff's in Howth and Leo Burdock's last year and was really pumped for fish 'n chips. This disappointed me, though. The chips were not very crispy and the hadock was honestly a bit dry. The batter was also a bit soggy. What happened? I have no idea. Could have easily been a 5 star for me, but it just didn't live up to expectations. This is still a nice joint - you can sit outside if it's not raining. There's toilets downstairs. They take credit cards. And there's an upstairs. The fact that it was "closed" (aka they didn't want to clean another floor...although I don't blame them) when we came was also sad. read more

I love fish and chips and make it a point to have them in any new place I go. I'm open minded and have no particular affinity to batter or style, appreciating it for what it is. There are a few things that fish and chips should be....Fresh-they shouldn't look like they came out of a freezer bag. Lovely batter that provides a nice texture contrast to the fish and can hold up to a good dousing of vinegar. It should not be soaking in its own grease becoming limp and soggy. Everything else is open to personal preference but those are the absolutes. Beshoff accomplished none of those things and dare I say probably the worst fish and chips I've had in my life in any corner of the world I've visited. I never thought I'd pull the discrimination card, but I'm definitely pulling it today. As I approached the counter to place my order, the woman at the cashier had a scowl on her face and told me that my food will be "take away only." She asked if that was okay with me, but I didn't think I had much of a choice. Immediately after I paid for my food, two other people placed their order and she gave them the option to dine in. They chose to stay and eat their food. The restaurant wasn't supposed to close for another hour and forty-five minutes. It's clear there was discrimination here--I'm just trying to figure out what triggered it. Whether it was because I am a black American, American, female, etc., it still isn't right and there's no justification for it. I know that people in the UK don't really care about the quality of their customer service, but kindness is a universal language. For that matter, rudeness is too! DON'T EAT HERE. I was craving fish and chips and walked more than a mile to get here. Not worth it. The chips, though an enormous amount, lacked crispiness and flavor. The haddock itself was also wanting in seasoning, and the tartar sauce could not make up for its blandness. The whole meal was very greasy, but if you're on a budget, this might be the place for you since it was under $10.
