So far (knocking on convenient wood furiously) I've had no problems with Bertie; indeed, I've had really good service from them for years since they first stopped by to replace our ailing 30+ year old Borg-Warner system with a Trane, as well as replace our traditional water heater with a tankless gas one. This latest appointment today was for an annual servicing of the AC. Bertie called us the day prior (we'd been signed up for the last several years for yearly maintenance; apparently though they plan to discontinue this practice and have people call in; a bit of a bummer) and we scheduled a time slot of from 10-12 in the morning, and today we got a call a little after 9:30am and the tech (Brandon) arrived just a little after 10. Brandon got to work, replacing our old April Aire filter with a new one, flushing the AC drainage, and checking the system for any issues. None found, he recommended we install surge protectors for the relatively delicate circuit boards and motor. Obviously this was a sales pitch, but after some research online it sounded like a solid idea; the only question in my mind was why these weren't suggested when the system was first installed, but given their track record I was fine with giving Bertie the benefit of the doubt. Installing a new system is a big undertaking, stuff slips through the cracks. They've fostered enough goodwill that I'm okay with this decision. After everything was done, Brandon walked me over to the system to describe what was done and show me the location of the two new surge protectors and lights on them indicating whether they're alive or had sacrificed themselves to subdue a surge. I signed off on a check for the bill and our system was back up and running. I'm not sure that the few reviews I've seen here for Bertie thus far provide a complete picture of their services, but this customer has nothing but good customer and technical service to report about them. read more

There's been a few after hours needs and each time received a response within the hour. the technicians have all been professional without any extra selling of repairs needed. After 9+ years as a customer of Bertie Heating & Air, I'm giving them my lowest rating. I've made one bad review in my entire life, so I'm not thrilled - but my experience was very negative. Strongly caution anyone considering engaging this company. Background In 2015, I contracted Bertie to install a new Trane system, including sealing the existing ductwork and adding a new supply/return line. For most of the years since, I purchased their Preventative Maintenance Agreement (PMA) at $280 per year, with no issues raised during inspections. Ductwork Issues In 2024, I noticed moisture near a ceiling vent and raised it during a preventative inspection. The tech kind of shrugged his shoulders, so I called Bertie. A senior tech then found ductwork problems, including poor seals and structural issues. I was charged $119 for this inspection and told that he and the owner, Jim, would follow up. After trading many calls with Jim Bertie, we agreed to bring in their ductwork specialist to assess the situation and "work together" on a solution. I approached this in good faith, acknowledging that the ductwork wasn't under warranty but expecting some level of collaboration since these issues were never raised during 9 years of preventative maint. Instead, I was given a $24,631 quote for ductwork replacement (trying to post actual quote). This is a 2,100 sq ft, 4/2 home!! The quote lacked itemized detail, noted add'l costs for any system damage, and even suggested replacing my still-warrantied Trane system. My response + Jim's I sent the enclosed letter to which Jim responded in a VM that it was "nonsense." 2nd Opinion From 2 licensed HVAC pro's. Both confirmed no major issues. One said your ductwork is fine. Other said efficiency could be improved w/ minor repair and added insulation at a total cost of $650. Both were shocked, after their assessment, by Bertie's $25k quote. Conclusion While the techs and office staff were professional, my trust in the owner, Jim, is gone. This experience felt like bad faith from an owner who does not care anymore. If your business with Bertie doesn't involve the owner, you might be fine. Otherwise, proceed with caution. read more

Unfortunately, the level of service has declined significantly. Two weeks ago, our air conditioning went out and I called their after-hours line for emergency service. No one ever called me back. This wasn't the first time -- the same thing happened during a previous outage. Since then, I've made multiple attempts to speak with someone about the issue. Each time, I've been told I would receive a call back, and not once has that actually happened. All I've received are excuses and broken promises. At this point, I feel completely disregarded as a customer, despite years of loyalty and regular payments. Service in 02/16/2022, after not hearing from tech I called my husband to ask if he said anything about the issue with the heat. His reply was no, but I'll give him the phone. Was told I had dust on my sensor. I then asked about a thermostat as mine was the programmable type with the hold button etc. the tech stated I think I have one on my truck. The next call I got was for payment. The total was 668.00 .... $95. Diagnostic fee, $225 sensor, $ 338 thermostat ( what???) wait he stated he called the office to verify price. I never authorized a $338 thermostat had my grand daughter send me a picture it was a cheap non programmable standard device. I called Bertie and spoke with Brenda whom immediately got annoyed but fought to contain her attitude. She claimed she needed to check the invoice and call me back on the 17th the next mornin. 11:20 AM on the 17th as I'm typing a complaint to BBB I decided to give them a call because it was clear she wasn't going to. I was given the famous she is in a meeting. Completed my claim with BBB as well as other agencies on fraudulent business practice. Next step is Small Claims Court. It's not even about the $$ it's about the deceptive practices.The thermostat I was charged $338.00 for can be purchased on Amazon for $46.97 - so that means they are marking their materials up almost 8 times the cost. AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS! Bertie AC charged our family $5,178 for a consultation that we decided to cancel before anything was done. Got notified that the cancellation went through in writing, but we were still charged the very next day and they only refunded this amount after we got the bill a month later. They reversed the scam charge only after bringing it up first and providing documentation. Do not use this company for AC repair they will scam you. You have been warned! Their technician also messed up the wiring which caused our AC unit to stop working. We got a family friend who works in HVAC and he quickly pointed this out, fixed it completely explaining the real issue, and our unit works today regardless of its age. They can keep that $500 for the hard start kit replacement where they tried to sabotage our AC unit since that faulty repair lasted only a day coming up with excuses while rushing to replace it with a 10K unit which was even worse. My technician, Sean, was on time, courteous, friendly, and very thorough in going over everything that he did and instructing us on how to keep our unit in excellent condition. Initially I was not going to write this review, but my experience with the owner operator yesterday has made me aware that I really need to make others aware that this is a company to avoid at all cost, and here's why. A five year old TRANE A/C, that Bertie installed, went dead at my mothers home. She is 86 years old. I called Bertie to come out and look at it. I met the technician out there. He said he replaced a blown fuse, but would have to order a board to fix the problem, and the fuse would probably blow again which it did very soon after he left. The board came in, he replaced the part, and gave us a bill for parts and labor. The system went dead right after he left. He came back and said he had replaced a bad section of thermostat wire, but the system went dead again shortly after he left. So they sent a different guy. This guy said he found a bad coil and he would have to order it. The part came in, he installed it, charged us parts and labor on a third time call back for the exact same failure, and the system went dead again shortly after he left. So they sent a THIRD guy! This guy found that the thermostat wire was shorting and had damaged another board. When the part came in I was not able to meet them at the house because I had a work conflict. Ends up they sent TWO guys out to the house to install a board and run thermostat wire! The wire runs across an attic with a high pitch roof, through the soffit, and along the line set which is open air all the way to the compressor. If they want to send two or ten guys to do a one man job that is their prerogative, but they don't get to charge us for extra guys, which they did. Then they charged us for the board that FINALLY appears to have fixed the problem, as well as $740 for 80 ft of thermostat wire! I took the part number off of the wire they used and had several parts houses around town cross it to the product they sell. 250ft of the exact same wire costs from $50 to $70!!! So what would you do in my situation? We were charged for three out of four call backs that were for the exact same problem, charged for two guys to do a one man job, and charged $740 for roughly $20 of wire! I hope I have already convinced you to take your business elsewhere because here is the really bad part! After over a week of trying to contact Jim, who I thought was still the owner, I got a response from him. He said he had retired, but he called the office and told them to refund my money and for me to take my business elsewhere in future. So I went into the office to get the final invoice and I was confronted by Mrs. Bertie, who apparently is the owner/operator. She takes criticism of their performance in the field personally instead of realizing that there is a problem and fixing it. She was EXTREAMLY hostile, insulting, and unprofessional. When I asked her how she justified charging my Mother $720 for roughly $20 worth of thermostat wire, she slapped the bill on the counter and said, "That's my price, pay it, and get off my property before I call the police, or I will see you in court". Needless to say, I'm taking option 2. I used the link Bertie provided to me to post this review. Can I give less than one star? We've been with Berti for at least 10 years. 110 heat index, and our ac quit working. Two people with heart conditions at this residence. The woman who answered the phone, )not Jessica who has always been extremely friendly, and helpful) was rude didn't care nobody could come for a week. NO EXCEPTIONS! She didn't really care, and she let it show. She kept saying this is their busiest time of year, other people had their AC's quit also. Totally didn't care that there were people, and animals who can't handle the heat, she offered no remedy except waiting a week. Before anybody says you shouldn't have moved to Florida. We've been here several generations, and know what the heat is like, and how badly people need AC here. Too bad birdie doesn't. read more

My float switch in/on air exchanger was tripped so I call Bertie back in April, 2018, Bertie came out and they reset the switch and cleared the condensate line, they charged me a maintenance fee which I paid, so fast forward to now in Nov I was having same problem , the float switch tripped but this time I reset it it but I had Bertie come back because it was apparent it wasn't fixed in April, this time he cleared the drain pan and they still have the guile to charge me 220 dollars. Extremely unhappy!!! Not to mention, this system is only a couple of years old bought and installed by Bertie for over 6 THOUSAND DOLLARS and they treat their good customers this way? DO NOT choose this company!! WORST SERVICEMAN and BUSINESS ETHICS I have ever encountered!! Read why: On Friday 8/7/2009 at 11 am, I phoned Bertie Heating and Air Conditioning and spoke with the dispatcher, Kevin, who assured me a serviceman would arrive to my home around 3 PM (this was when my roommate was available to be home). I asked whether it was ok to have my roommate pay with a check from me since I was leaving out of town to visit my family. Kevin confirmed this was fine. At 6 PM, no one had yet arrived at my home! After calling, and getting the after hours receptionist, a serviceman, Nate, called me back. Immediately, he was rude and aggressive. "Why didn't you answer the phone when I called?", he grunted. "Did you give this number to the dispatcher?" I wasn't sure what he meant but shortly learned he had phoned my home (which I was not at because I was going out of town) rather than my cell before he decided to come to my 3 PM appointment. This is even though I did NOT request a call before arriving! When I told Nate I didn't ask for a call before the appointment and that I told Kevin I was going out of town and he assured a serviceman would arrive around 3 PM, he was even more rude!! I said it was probably due to a miscommunication between his colleagues (which is totally normal and understandable) but he didn't stop his attitude. Once arriving at my home at 6:30 PM Nate treated both my roommate and home with total disrespect! My roommate tried to make conversation and discuss some of the troubles we had been having with the air system but he was standoffish and cold. He examined the outdoor system and threw the cover on my flowering plants and didn't say a word. At this point my roommate noticed alcohol on his breathe! Nate phoned me to discuss the problem with the air system and was completely short and aggressive. I told him, I understood his frustration and that he would rather be else where on a Friday night but his attitude problem did not change! To try to ease the issue I asked my father to talk to Nate so they could discuss the system in a "technical manner". Nate was very defensive and also treated my father very poorly. Nate raised his voice toward myself, my roommate, and my father. During this period Nate even hung up the phone on me! Given this poor encounter, my roommate ask Nate to wait outside while he wrote out the check for $268. As he closed the front door Nate barged inside and said "I can undo this work if you're not going to pay." After Nate received the check and left my home he continued to phone my cell phone repeatedly. There was no reason for him to call yet he continued to harass me. On Monday 8/10/2009 at 8 AM I phoned Bertie Heating and Air Conditioning to express my disappointment. Although the office staff was professional and understanding, the office manager said she had to verify phone records and other details. I told her I didn't believe I received any "service" and requested that the service fee or a portion of it was waived. On Friday 8/14/2009 I received a letter from Bertie Heating and Air Conditioning. In the letter, the company admitted Nate acted unprofessionally and that they had higher standards than this behavior. They did not, however, offer any compensation or waiver of the "service fee". I am now in need of an updated air system. Had Bertie Heating and Air Conditioning "treated me like family" (like their website states their company does) and offered some form of a reimbursement as a token for me and my roommate and father's stress and troubles, I might have considered choosing them again. I will, however, NOT use Bertie Heating and Air Conditioning!! I recommend you consider this scenario when deciding which company to hire. Choose another company! read more

A representative from Bertie Heating & Air Conditioning came to my home on 4/16 to diagnose an air conditioner that was blowing warm air. The young man was polite, and cordial. He was respectful, as well. While looking at our unit, he must have told us, at least 4 times, that he was "still in school". This became apparent, when he started with one diagnosis that simply involved a new compressor and a re-charge of the system, to a multi-part replacement that would cost thousands, to a brand new unit, and air handler. To say my husband and I were concerned about his ability to diagnose the problem, is an understatement. The service call lasted about 45 minutes. By the end, he was standing firm on us simply needing a new unit, and arranged for a "Comfort Consultant" to come out the next day, and give us an estimate on a new unit. So, we paid the $95.00 visit, which yielded nothing but uncertainty, and waited to speak to the other representative about the situation. This young man (older than the tech, at least), spent about 15 minutes looking at the old unit, walking around the house, and then went out to his vehicle to print a quote. The estimate was for $4,300.00 for a new unit, air handler, touch screen programmable thermostat (which we didn't need), concrete pad (which we didn't need), and testing/sealing all duct work. After I looked at the estimate, I expressed my concerns to this representative about the diagnosis given by the young, "still in school" tech. I told him that his company was asking us to put a substantial dent in our savings, and if the roles were reversed, I am sure you would want a second opinion before dropping that amount of money on something you weren't convinced you needed. He told me that the young man in question had been doing this for about 5 years, and he knew this because he has been with the company for 7. I told him that he needs to work on his sales pitch then, because he had us convinced he shouldn't even be on calls solo, yet. We felt it was in all fairness, to ask for a second tech to come out, and offer a second opinion. The "Comfort Consultant" assured me Mr. Bertie takes all concerns seriously, and that someone from the office would contact us that afternoon. Someone did contact my husband, and left a voicemail. My husband returned his call the same day, and left a message with the office receptionist. Since then, we have heard NOTHING from Bertie Heating & Air Conditioning. The bottom line, is all we asked for was a little reassurance that our money was being spent wisely, and they couldn't be bothered to follow up. You don't just ask someone to spend $4,300.00 with your company on blind faith. Based on this experience, we contacted another company, who installed the SAME unit Bertie had quoted us on, minus the thermostat and other things we *didn't* need replaced, to the tune of $3,000.00 We didn't mind spending the money. If you need a new unit, you do what you have to do. Just don't ask someone to do it with no assurances or confidence. Of which I have neither, in Bertie Heating & Air Conditioning. read more

I was with Bertie for over 15 years and was a loyal customer. I have two air conditioners. The first one broke and Bertie came out. I had to put down a deposit for them to order the part. The service trip charge increased to $119. My second unit went down a couple of days later. Bertie could not come until late the next day. I called another company whom came out within hours. They diagnosed the problem and gave me their quote. Their service trip charge was $100. It would have been $60 if I had the maintenance agreement with them. I had one with Bertie. I kept the appointment for my 2nd AC unit with Bertie. They diagnosed the same issue, but wanted to charge me $600 more than the other company. Bertie came out and fixed the first unit. They charged me over $700 for Freon without asking us. My daughter was at home as I was away. $104 per pound. I found out the competitor sells the Freon for $60 per pound. Bertie also left bolts on the garage floor when they did the work on the AC. I also found out the air filters I was buying from them were much cheaper on Amazon even though Bertie stated they were giving me a great discount for being a loyal customer. Bertie was good once, but I would call someone else. They supposedly fixed my AC by replacing the motor but it went bad in a few months because they neglected to also change the bad coils. That's not great but what made it worse was that they took no responsibility for their mistake. The part should have been warrantied for a year but they did not stand by it. Good service. They replaced the interior fan motor on the AC unit. They charged $100 for the ten minutes it took to tell me the interior fan motor wasn't working (kind of obvious since it was the only part that didn't come on.) My coworkers assured me the $100 diagnosis charge would be credited to the part replacement. Nope, not with Bertie. Silly coworkers, maybe that is just a mythical industry standard. The motor was upwards $900 and the one hour of labor (including the time it took to retrieve a "special wrench") was upwards of $500 . It happened in spring, so I was afraid to spend too much time getting estimates. Maybe $500 for an hour of labor is an average cost for the replacment of the interior fan of a (3.5 ton?) unit (small house), but it strikes me as extortion. The repairman was very professional, reputable in appearance and behavior, so I guess that's something. When the unit inevitably dies, their name won't be the first one on my lips. read more

Having your HVAC system completely replaced can feel daunting at the very least. When I called Bertie Heating and A/C I knew I was dealing with top notch professionals from the beginning. Jeff came to my home and to see exactly what I needed to complete my upgrade. The next day I received an email from him with not one but with three options to choose from. All three options allowed me to pick and choose what I needed and what I could afford on my budget. It is always wonderful to have options! My installers were wonderful! Not only were they knowledgeable but they were quick and competent. I have to say, I was thinking that it would take an entire day and much to my surprise my new HVAC system was completely installed my early afternoon. Drew and Anthony were wonderful. They took the time to explain the difference of my old system and my new one and make sure I knew how to do the basic maintenance and set the new digital thermostat. I had air conditioner and heating units installed in my home 3 months ago by bertie. The installation went well, however, the reason I went with them was because they offered a $900 rebate and when 2 months elapsed and we had not recieved it, we called to inquire. The first time we called we reached Valerie Bertie. She promised to look into it and call back. She never did. We called back again, and were told she was on another line and would call back. She didn't and when we called her, we were told she left for the day. This happened a couple more times before we threatened to file a claim in court. She still never contacted us. I then had to contact the Trane company to find out what was going on. They told me the "clearing house" had never recieved the rebate information. So I called Bertie again to get answers. Crissy Bertie answered the phone and seemed quite annoyed when I told her who I was, she put me on hold for a minute, came back, and proceeded to rapidly tell me that the rebate had been filed with the Trane rep. I asked her what the Trane reps phone number was so I could ask him about the status and she told me all she had was a home number and couldn't give it to me. I asked if he had an office number and she said she didn't know it. I was very disturbed by her tone and told her she was being rude to me to which she replied "no I'm not", she then hung up on me. I then fired off an email to Trane, and the rep called me the next day and told me about a "computer glitch". In short, I have never been treated so poorly by a local business in my life - especially considering the we spent several thousand dollars with them. We have used Bertie for years. We bought a new a/c unit and handler in the past 2 years. Up to now they have been good until yesterday. They came out to our rental to check on our old Trane unit, as the tenants stated the unit would not maintain "72 degrees" and it was blowing coldest air in the living room not so much in the bedrooms. I had Bertie check the unit in October and it was working great. The repairman sent out on the call went to the backyard and opened the unit. He removed 3 compositors of various sizes. He told me they were all bad, and he could replace each one from $125.00 to $150.00. I wrote down the model # of each unit and told him I would look to replace them on the internet. He then said each one online would cost $30 to $40. (Later my husband told me the unit would not run if all the compositors were bad). He told me my a/c unit was shot and that I needed a new one for around $ 5,500.00 and up. All this being told to me in front of my tenants. My tenants called me when they arrived home from work and said the a/c unit would not turn on. This morning I called Bertie A/C and explained the problem. The woman was rude and told me their serviceman did nothing wrong and I had to replace the unit. All that for a $95.00 service call. One of the worst in our area, if not the worst! A Trane unit installed improperly & Jim, the owner & his spouse, "self proclaimed co-owner" BOTH are racists & profane! They offer warranties just to sell you a unit & that warranty, they do not abide by or ever intend to provide warranty service at all! My issue is not with my Trane unit, a great $6,000 unit (Bertie sold me at that price, which it's market price is under $4,000.00 thus Bertie robbed me on install too). However, my warranty issue was by Bertie & not Trane but Trane loves Bertie because he sells around 7,000 of their units per year, just another FYI. You may ask what my beef is with this firm: I had to sue them in court & prevailed. Don't believe me, check the Alachua County couthouse records for Bertie Heating & Air, LLC & James F. Bertie, a.k.a. Jim Bertie & you will see the case results. Horrible service, rude service manager & GOD help you if you end up dealing with "Jimmy's Wife" or for that matter, "Jimmy" or "Jim" himself. They will lie in court & did BUT the Judge wasn't buying their cover up scam & ordered them to pay up for the warranty they offered under contract & found they were liable for. If you already, sadly, taken by them, file in court for a hearing & stand your ground if you know you are in the right. If you are considering them for service or an install of any unit, do yourself a favor & consider checking out the provider's BBB rating & court record's before you decide on a provider.
