Look it's attached to a hotel and it's comparable to a hotel breakfast. Honestly they tru to be a stand alone business and it does alright. The food is just ok. I mean that..it's diner food but not like the greasy diner food that makes you regret life's choices. They have fun menu items but they fall just a little bit short of your actual expectations. Its cute. Its kinda boujee, the staff is friendly and the place is a little retro themed but honestly the food is just ok. I will always be a fan but I will also be honest about the food. I've spent a decent portion of my life in Billings and somehow Bernie's Diner never made it on my radar. Unfortunately, this morning I wasn't hungry, but my family was. Upon walking into Bernie's Diner, it felt like we were walking back into the sixties. I asked various relatives about this place, and everyone knew about it and highly recommended it. Why didn't they tell me about it? My family really seemed to enjoy their breakfast. Though what they ordered was basic diner food, I'm a fan of diner food. I did have a chance to taste everything, and it tasted great! I loved the atmosphere. The service here was great! We'll certainly be back, and I'll make sure I'm hungry next time. When I went in for lunch, few tables were available, as it appears they just got slammed with the breakfast crowd, as most tables were full of dishes. Service was friendly, as I sat at the bar top. Most items are made right across from the counter, which gives me Waffle House vibes without the grill. The food was okay, nothing really to write home about. read more

When visiting my family in Billings, we like to eat at Bernie's Diner. It's the perfect spot for brunch on Sundays. They have large portions, tasty food, good prices, large mugs of coffee & great service. I enjoy their eggs Benedicts and my husband likes their skillets. I need to do an intense workout before my next visit so I can try the Vacation Breakfast, which the menu describes "fishy double chocolate cake served with a frosting-dipped chocolate Wilcoxon's Creamery milkshake. Our 40 minute wait on a Sunday turned into about 70 minutes but the tasty food was worth the wait. There were 7 of the us and we had Eggs Benedict, pancakes, French toast, BLT and the Banana Bread French toast and we all enjoyed our food. Staying at the Northern, it made sense to do breakfast at Bernie's -- and it was a great idea to do so. FOOD: Large cups of good coffee, and a variety of breakfast and lunch dishes available. I had a Southwestern Skillet with a basted egg, and it was delicious (my only critique is that it felt like the underlying ingredients -- chorizo, green chili, breakfast potatoes -- weren't actually mixed together, but it still tasted great). Everyone else enjoyed their meal, too. SERVICE: Pretty timely and attentive. Friendly. It took a while for our food to come out, but they were also pretty busy. AMBIANCE: Upscale diner motif, clean and pretty. VALUE: With tip we ended up a bit over $20/person, which is pretty decent for the quality and the setting. Great location. Cheap service and food. I ordered toast and eggs over easy. The eggs were "well done". They didn't butter their toast. Ordered side of fruit, 90% blueberries 1 strawberry cut up into 8 tiny slices to give the illusion of strawberry abundance... and then some honey due but not the ripe phlome it was like the 1/4" closest to the shell. The hard part of the melon if you will. We were supposed to get two eggs. I ordered mine over easy so I could dip my dry unbuttered toast and get that gooey egg but the egg was well done. My dad got scrambled eggs. But in volume was shorted . Maybe one small eggs worth of scrambled. We had to remind them that ordered a side of fruit, and then they delivered the plates to the wrong people so we had to swap. It's kind of noisy and echoes, so bad for people with hearing aids. I felt we got maybe $15 worth of food, but when the bill came we had to pay almost $100 for 4 people. I think because they get business from the fancy hotel they are connected to they care more about volume and profits then about the actual food and service. read more

We tried Bernie's today as the wife has been wanting to try it out for a couple of months now. We arrived and was seated really quickly. We ordered our meal, I had the chicken fried steak. That steak came smothered with a nice serving of gravy. I thought this was going to be a great meal but alas, when I started cutting into it that motherfucker was burnt! All in all, the meal cost $52 which pisses me off cuz I paid for burnt food. I am so pissed! I wouldn't recommend this shithole to a starving Somali. read more

FANTASTIC! Where to begin. Great place for traditional and non-traditional fare, including many healthy options for vegetarians. Loved the 1950s-60s decor! It is bright and very clean. We were seated immediately at 9:30 on a rainy Sunday morning by the sweetest hosts ever and promptly given water, big cups of piping hot coffee, and lots of cheerful banter with the servers. I had the avocado toast, my husband had the chilaquile, and both were outstanding. Service was quick but not rushed. After eating, be sure to check out the great gift shop that is attached! You can buy their branded, super-soft napkins; Montana-made treats; sundries; and even jewelry! The clerk was very knowledgeable about all the items in the store. We decided on Bernies for brunch today. It took us a couple of laps to find a parking spot, but it was less than a block away. We ordered the banana bread french toast combo, a burger, and short stack of pancakes. The banana bread was delicious, and it was sweet enough without adding any additional syrup. The eggs were cooked to order, and the bacon was crispy and delicious. I could have easily shared it! The burger and onion rings were good, and the pancakes were too! It was a relaxed and laid-back atmosphere. Although service was good, it was a bit slower than we were expecting, and many customers weren't in a rush to leave. I also think we arrived between shifts, so that could have played a role with service. Overall, good food and atmosphere. read more

I was a bit hesitant and had kept my expectations low before I came, given several discouraging reviews I read on the internet, but I'm happy to say I had a very pleasant experience. I went on a Tuesday morning for breakfast, which was excellent because it was so quiet. Finding parking was easy. The establishment is associated with The Northern Hotel, and their guests would have breakfast here, so I would expect a much larger crowd on the weekends. The ambiance was 10/10. Clean rows of round stools and the counter on the left and tables next to the window on the right. It gives a retro diner vibe but with a slightly modern and clean feel. I suppose because it was a slow morning, the service was also more relaxed than I expected. The menu is classic diner meals, some with a more Montanan twist. I contemplated between the elk skillet and the stuffed banana bread french toast. The banana bread french toast sounded so indulgent as it was filled with mascarpone mousse, dipped in creme brulee batter, and drizzled with huckleberry syrup. However, I'm not ready for a sugar spike to crash later when I'm about to catch a flight in 1.5 hours. (Next time, maybe!) Thus, I went with the elk skillet--breakfast potato, elk sausage, black bean, mushroom, queso fresco, and eggs. I also asked for sourdough toast on the site. Their jam is homemade, and the flavor changes every week. The dish was so fragrant, and the aroma hit my olfactory nerves the moment the skillet landed on the table. It was the perfect portion (for me); not too big, but it filled me past lunchtime. I suppose it was because it was so loaded with protein. It was my first time trying elk sausage. It's much leaner, thus chewier but lighter, than beef or pork. The spice gives an occasional fresh kick of heat. One disappointment was that I asked for poached eggs, but they were served over-easy and well done, but I don't feel like sending them back. Why ruin a good morning? The rest of my breakfast was enjoyable. I love the homemade jam. It was only very slightly sweet and more tart. I highly recommend having a toast and jam on the side with the skillet. It balances the flavor profile nicely. Although some things could have been better, I'm glad I tried anyway. If I come back to Billings, I would love to come back. read more

Food took over an hour and then it was cold. It was bad! I was so upset we waited that long for bad food. And the au jus was super salty.

I ended up making it here twice while I was in town and both visits were equally good. I parked in the ramp next door (parking is validated). The team here provides great service. They were quick to get the monstrous cups of coffee to the table. The orders were taken quickly and the food was quickly out too. The coffee is delicious, I would go here just for that. We never got refills on our drinks and the waitress was not doing her job just standing there behind the bar just watching, mind it is easter and it's not packed at all, our waitress had a bad attitude on her and when my fathers tortilla came cold he asked for a new one and said we can't microwave it which who puts tortillas in the microwave , then insisted on just putting it on the grill which they should have done in the first place instead of serving it cold. For a "special" you'd expect more than just chopped up pieces of uncooked apple (stem/seeds & all, btw) haphazardly scattered on top of basic pancakes. Would take minimal effort to cook down a batch of apples with some cinnamon and sugar and make it truly special. Was definitely jealous of my partner's breakfast sandwich! Bernies is a no-frills​, run-of-the-mill, typical diner and that is exactly why I loved it. The menu is simple, the decor is 50's reminiscent​ and the service is straight to the point. The night before we checked out the breakfast menu at Bernie's and decided to try it. Fabulous breakfast. I had the 1/2 portion eggs Benedict with fruit. Very tasty. I loved the pecan-smoked ham and the Hollandaise (a key to this dish) was proper. I also tried a side (single piece) of the "Captain Crunch" French toast which is made with the Cap'n Crunch's Crunch Berries cereal. I was afraid it might be overly sweet, but it wasn't at all. They add enough to give the French toast flavor and color and festivity of the cereal, but not toooo much sweetness. My husband had the huckleberry pancakes which I also recommend. The pancakes were fluffy yet moist (that combo isn't always achievable) There was just a smear of huckleberries on top which added to the deliciousness of the pancakes without overwhelming. read more

In the several visits I've made to Billings in the last couple of years, I've been asked if I've been to Bernie's yet or been admonished for not having been to Bernie's. That all ends now. Take THAT you verbal haranguers. I like this place. It's unexpected for being linked to the hotel next door. It's cheerful inside, like a movie-set for an old-fashioned ice cream shop. The menu has a classic mix of Americana fare like you expect from a diner. On this day, it was a toss up between breakfast or lunch and then I saw the menu's equally classic monte cristo sandwich. Yeah... there's not one healthy thing about the sandwich, which is why it isn't often offered on menus any more. Unlike those classic cocktails now making a resurgence, these sandwiches should probably stay rare. Not that they aren't good, because they are, but one or two bites goes a long way. And my doctor would likely have a heart attack of his own if I said these were part of my regular diet. So of course I ordered it. Just Because. A couple of bites and I was satisfied. Even then, the breading, which was nice and crispy, peeled off, so I was able to eat the melted cheese and the turkey and ham layers that were not unlike a thin meat and cheese grilled cheese but without the outside bread. I still couldn't finish it. The raspberry jam for dipping was a bite of added heaven. Would I order it again? Probably not, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it this time. The waitress was quick with the first tea refill but was not obtrusive and after the first refill, she didn't ask again. For a lunch place for the downtown working crowd that probably typical. The soup for the day was chili, and I have to say, it was delicious. The small bowl was filling and hearty; but, if you don't like beans in your chili, and some purists do not, then opt for something else. It looks as though they're using liquid eggs but I am not sure, they don't Poarch their eggs they use a different method calling it basted. Not unexpected on a Sunday morning, but the wait was over an hour, even when quoted 45 minutes. The wait for food was also extremely long, not just for us but for everyone around us. There were no children's menus, with different reasons for every one that asked. My sister ordered Bernie's burrito, with chorizo, and it was completely inedible because it was so salty. My Ranch with Elk sausage; unusual for me, I didn't/wouldn't finish it, the sausage was kind of different tasting, but that's on me because I ordered it; the biscuit and gravy was very so-so; the diced potatoes also so-so, even with cholula sauce; eggs are eggs, but pretty bland. My wife's French Toast was pretty good, and my granddaughter loved her Captain Crunch French toast. As for cleanliness, there was a wadded up napkin left under the table from some past guest. My biggest complaint, and it didn't happen to us, was two elderly ladies that were seated not too far from us. They decided the wait for food was way too long, and told the server that they couldn't wait, and left. The problem was they left the same glasses of water, on the table for the next couple that was seated at the table. Maybe for some people that wouldn't be a problem, but it looked pretty unsanitary to everyone at our table. I ordered the pile up and the only thing it needed was a little salt and pepper. I enjoyed the meal and had to get a box to take it home. My better half got the chicken biscuit plate and loved it. Stopped in for lunch after checking into the Northern and we were not disappointed. Jessica waited on us quickly and was as sweet and helpful as she could be. The food was prepared as ordered, delivered hot and fresh and was generous. Fries and tots were crispy outside and soft inside as they should be. Sandwiches and burgers obviously made fresh and each of us raved about our choice. Breakfast was the same great experience. This time Natasha waited on us and was just as accurate, pleasant and helpful as Jess was the previous day. Found this place close to the DoubleTree hotel and I'm so glad I did! The food here is amazing and the service was top notch. I ordered the breakfast sandwich and the granola side. The granola side came out within 1 minute of me ordering it, and it was delicious. The granola was sweet and had a great taste to it and it was covered with fresh fruit and had a side of milk to pour over it. The portion of it was large, almost enough to fill you up by itself. Then the breakfast sandwich came out and it too was a large portion. The eggs were perfect, the bacon was thick cut and delicious, and the roll it came in was fluffy. It was the perfect meal! Sorry, but it took this long to post it to Yelp! Bernie's Diner opens at 6 every morning, and today, Thursday, August 24, 2017, I arrived about 10 minutes after the restaurant opened. My early arrival was "strategically" planned, as I had a busy day ahead of me, I wanted to avoid crowds, which makes photography much easier, and I wanted avoid the parking meters, in downtown Billings, that don't kick in until 7 o'clock on weekday mornings. Bernie's is located in the Northern Hotel in downtown Billings, which is the largest city in Montana. Breakfast menu, which is served all day. Breakfast skillet dishes aren't my usual choice, but how could I pass on an "Elk Skillet," as I'd never seen that before? I'm adventurous and always like to try new things. If something doesn't work out to my liking, I just suck it up, enjoy my choice, and look forward to tomorrow. My two friendly servers, who worked in tandem, chat with a customer at the counter, who appears to be a local. Andri is cutting lemon slices as Karrie chats with the customer. "In tandem" means that Kari actually took my order, and kept my coffee mug full as Andri actually served my order. Both of these lovely ladies were charming, friendly and talkative. I had considered a more traditional breakfast, but since I was in Billings, and Montana is noted for elk, and other big game hunting - where is the "moose skillet?" - I ordered the "Elk Skillet." The menu advertises the "Elk Skillet" starts with elk sausage, and contains home fries, ranchero sauce, black beans, mushrooms, cheddar cheese, and an egg, cooked "your way." No toast or gravy is included. I had a few misgivings, but I just HAD to order it, and now I can proudly tell the World Wide Web that I HAVE enjoyed an "Elk Skillet" for breakfast! The elk sausage was on the spicy side, but not enough to offend most tastes, and there was a lot of it. The sausage was piled on top of the home fries, black beans, mushrooms, cheese and ranchero sauce. I didn't taste either the cheese or the ranchero sauce. I ordered eggs over easy, which topped the dish, but as the photo shows, one egg was medium, and the other one was broken and hard. I should have sent it back to the kitchen, but I didn't... Aside from the eggs, the skillet was good, but not great. What would have made it great was correctly cooked eggs, a side of gravy, and an order of toast. However, now I own bragging rights to tell the entire Web that I've enjoyed an "Elk Skillet" at Bernie's Diner! Bernie's Diner is the quintessential restaurant of downtown Billings, as it caters to the tastes of locals, and is "the" place to enjoy a delicious, informal breakfast in downtown Billings. I really enjoyed the hour or so I spent at this fine restaurant, as the staff are super friendly, and the place is a lot of fun.
