I stayed at the hotel for a few days on a business trip getting up early taking a Lyft back and forth given a cap for my experiences and incidentals. Busy following and shadowing top professionals in their field so I can help them fix their issues and get them the support they need or just have them replaced and restructure everything. I just didn't eat breakfast or lunch I had to be at the work site at 6:30 and not out until 4:30 to 5 Uber and Lyft takes time to get to you. It's not 2 to 5 minutes like it is in my city. I was not here to site see. Dinner was the only meal I had time for. So my last day i have to check out at 11 go to the airport get on a tiny plane that I pray won't be delayed again. I look up the area for restaurants not many to choose from I'm not into breakfast foods very often. So I read the menu for this place on Yelp. They had a grilled cheese with wild mushrooms goat cheeses and Gruyere. I went down from my hotel room a sign said please Waite to be seated so I did. There was a couple waiting already Siting so I did the same the servers saw them and myself and another women that came down with her laptop who sat down too. Than a two people walked in from out side the walked over Waited at the sign and the very same people that saw the couple before me and myself just ignored that we were there there and helped the two that walked in. The women that walked in after me got up it looked like she wanted to say hey wait I want a table. I just got upset and walked out to go talk to the front desk there was someone at the desk talking to the agent. So I went back up to my room and called no one picked up the phone so I hung up. They called me back and I told them what had happened. I saw they were busy I get that, but they saw us waiting our turn they could have said hello we will be with you shortly. The manager said what can I do to help you and make this right can I get you room service? I said your room service menu is limited that why I went down. I had been working the whole time I was there and I had to rush whole eating my one meal each day so I could get back to writing my reports. I wanted to relax and not have to sit in my room. I reluctantly told her I was going to order the mushrooms grilled cheese I wanted fruit but was afraid they may have pineapple in it I really didn't want to have reaction front desk managers don't know all ingredients I hated the fries from Ten a few days before so I got the tots and a soda . The order was brought up by one of the servers that saw me waiting there. A tip was already added on. It was a flat really cheesy grilled cheese with button mushrooms American and cheddar cheese after the menu had different ingredients on it. I looked at the menu on the hotel website and saw the menu was updated. Just another blow I don't like grilled cheese but I do like goat cheese and mushrooms not typical. I really didn't want any heavy meats. A grilled cheese is not even on the menu anymore has I been acknowledged and say I would have seen that and chosen something else maybe even been able to get fruit that didn't have some that could sent me to the hospital in this city. $18 for a grilled cheese with very crunchy tots a small soda with no refills. It was not bad but not my kind of food. I tried to eat it but it was very rich and the oil just has too much so could not finish it. I was still thirsty after the water I refuse to pay $5 for a bottle of water they have sitting in the room. Stay away from this please go somewhere else. I only gave it star because I had to. I feel bad for the cooks it's not their fault they have neglectful service staff. I really wanted to like the place. read more

I'm so glad we stopped in Bernie's to eat breakfast! I guess because it was 8 in the morning that it wasn't that busy so we didn't have to wait that long. The breakfast was very good and definitely hit the spot! I love the inside of the diner so much!! It reminds me of the diner that Gibbs goes to in NCIS. Lol. Anyway the breakfast sandwich was very good! The staff was also very nice. Definitely recommend going here. This is one of my favorite breakfast spots in the country. Even their lunch is up there. For starters, the vibes are incomparable. They made it the cutest little diner theme. It is always very clean, even when they are busy, and it is in the hotspot of Downtown Billings. The menu has a wide variety of options but I really love how much their food stands out...and in all the best ways. They have a non-traditional gravy that I would take a bullet for. I am not even 100% sure what is inside of it but it is full of flavor. Most restaurants just have a white/brown gravy and sometimes it has pepper, at the most, in it. The eggs are always perfect. I am weird and don't really like to overthink the fact that I am eating eggs, but their scrambled eggs are always perfectly fluffy. The texture is spot on and not a lot of other places can do that. The bacon is another thing I find very "non-traditional" they are in thick cut strips, as opposed to breakfast competitors that have them in thin fatty strips. With their bacon, you always get a ton of the good meat on the strip. Their biscuits are thick and not really as fluffy in my opinion but they compliment the gravy wonderfully. Bernie's is an absolute must while you're in Billings. It is a phenomenal breakfast place and it is a great asset to downtown! Stella's had a 30 minute wait, so I needed a plan B...Don't believe the 3 Star average here, Bernie's is fabulous! Or maybe I got lucky twice... Day 1: $10 Corned Beef Hash...its HUGE! And tasty. Good coffee too. Day 2: $10 Breakfast Burrito...I'm from San Diego, CA, and I approve of this thick breakfast burrito. The carnitas could use some more flavor, but overall its great. Super clean, friendly staff, good food at reasonable prices, and there was no wait for a table on Saturday or Sunday, unlike Stella's(overhyped). I even got a free to go cup for coffee. Wife and I went here this morning. We were seated immediately. Our server came up and got our drink orders right off, then took the food order. Life was good. Then the food arrived, and marked the last time we saw our server until the bill came. I got the meat lover's skillet, which was good. Wife got the chicken and waffles, which was not good. The waffle was mediocre, but the chicken is where it got bad. It wasn't chunks of chicken or even a chicken breast or just chicken tenders. No, this was tiny bits of chicken, breaded and fried to a dried-out leathery inedible texture. We'd have sent that back and gotten something different but there was no check back from the server. In the end the chicken was pushed to the side and the waffle was picked at. By the time the check arrived we just paid it and left. I've lived in Billings for 3 years and it took family visiting for us to try Bernie's. We had planned to brunch at another restaurant, but the line was out the door, so we wandered into Bernie's. We did have to wait about 15 minutes, but the waiting area was very nice. The restaurant is a bit loud & busy, but that's to be expected in a small space with a lot of people & movement. The table we ended up with was very small and circular, so it was difficult for all of us to have a glass of water, cup of coffee, and also have room for our food once it arrived. We made it work, but even though they had the table set for 4, it should have been for 2 people, 3 at most. Our server was very kind and attentive. She grabbed our drinks and orders quickly. After ordering, it only took about 10-15 minutes for our food to arrive. I thought this was very good considering the restaurant was packed. The menu offers a large variety of options for breakfast, lunch, desserts, and milkshakes. It was difficult to choose what I wanted, but I ultimately decided upon "The Ranch", which was incredibly delicious. The others with me all thoroughly enjoyed their meals as well. The portions were large, filling, and full of flavor. Besides the small tables and loud environment, I'm glad we finally tried Bernie's. My wife and I go to Bernie's every time we are in town. The last two times we have been there they have been out of one of our favorite menu items. Saturday we waited 45 minutes for our food and they were not busy not near as busy as it used to be. We love it there. The staff is great and the service is friendly. Sorry to say we will have to pick a new favorite spot and by the looks of it many others are doing the same. It used to be the long wait was to get a table but now the long wait is for the food which has gone downhill. Sad to say! Bernie's whatever you're doing it isn't working! Terrific American diner. Super busy when I was there on a Sunday morning, so be prepared to wait a while. They also have counter service for faster service if you are alone or small group. Excellent Vegan options with a delicious veggie sausage. They're home fries are pretty yummy as well. As busy as they are, the service is still pretty good, and your food comes pretty fast. Bernies Diner is one of the few places open to eat on a late Sunday morning/early afternoon in Downtown Billings. We waited 50 minutes to get seated and another 40 minutes to get our food on the table. The restaurant was clearly understaffed and the some of the staff seemed to be overwhelmed, especially with some of the impatient customers. Our server was kind and hospitable. The food itself was solid. Was it worth 90 minutes? No. However, if I was back in Billings and Bernies Diner wasn't as crowded/understaffed, I'd love to give this restaurant another go. read more

Eaten here quite a few times with my super picky husband, so that must mean it passes his test. The avocado & tomato benedict is my favorite. Get the richness of a good ole benny, with some added freshness too. The coffee is hot, but mehh. The corned beef is also pretty tasty. The only not great dish I've had is the veggie skillet. Only because the potatoes were horrendous, like moldy and old. However, my husband has gotten the denver skillet a few times, so maybe it's just luck of the draw? I went there with a friend for the first time, we were sat pretty quickly because we were seated at the bar which was fine, we said we would sit wherever they could get us cause they were pretty busy. We both got the boozy milkshakes which was awesome, double the price of what it says on the menu though. I got the turkey club (it's called northern something) with a side of chilli and my friend got the avocado tomato Benedict. My turkey club was fine enough, just an average toasted wheat sandwich. The chilli it came with was just soup pretty much. There were just giant pieces of ground beef that I had to break up, which I honestly don't care about too much, and a bunch of barely cooked chilli peppers. It was so liquidy, I regret getting it. My friend enjoyed her meal, but it was very mushy and the English muffin wasn't toasted at all. Our waitress was very kind and as attentive as she could be with how crowded it was. The biggest complaint besides it being as pricey as it is for just mediocre food, was the person who was preparing food behind the counter. They were staring at my friend and I the whole time, and I caught them making faces at my friend (who was literally not doing anything) a handful of times, I almost asked them what their problem was. Overall we felt uncomfortable by them the entire time and brought the vibe and conversation down because we were just being watched the whole time. Ate breakfast here twice while staying at the Northern. It's a cute little diner, friendly service, and great coffee served in a huge cup. But the food? Between the 2 of us, we tried 4 meals over 2 days, and honestly, it's just ok. Tried the Croque Monsiuer, and it was all right, but the egg was too runny and the sandwich was kind of cold w/ cheese not melted, and potatoes tasted like the frozen variety. Huevos rancheros - ok, but flavors were strange, and tortilla was really tough. Denver skillet and eggs Benedict - same; just ok (tasted like the same ingredients from the day before, just reassembled). If I came back, think I might just go for the fresh fruit or yogurt parfait - it looked pretty good. The place does have a lively, bustling vibe, though, especially on the weekends. read more

Family diner with enough class and charm to make you want to return every weekend. Open only for breakfast and lunch. I've had the French toast with eggs and sausage and the second time I had biscuits and gravy with eggs. I liked the French toast better but thought the biscuits were excellent too. The shining star is the shrimp and grits with an over easy egg so you can break the yolk and it runs all over. The coffee is served in a bowl equivalent, which is perfect. Wish they brought little carafes of creamer rather than the little throw away ones. There are couches on busy mornings when you have to wait which is nice. Most breakfast items are $10 ish which may seem like a lot to a Montanan but it's really a pretty good deal. The service is great and then you start to get recognized which is nice. There's an older gentleman that must be the dishwasher that comes out from the kitchen occasionally. He looks real nice and smiles. I think he must have a story and would like to find out what it is someday. He stops to watch patrons and their families and then goes back to his business. I hope they feed him some pancakes once in awhile. read more

This is a delightful little place. Friendly staff and pretty good food. Super size coffee cups get a good laugh. I would recommend someone talking with the line cooks and going over things like what the difference between "over medium" and "over easy" eggs are and the definition of "crispy bacon". We ordered over medium eggs and got over easy and my "crispy" bacon was "broken" (like in pretty women when she is trying to get the viewing glasses to work at the opera "their broken, mine are broken" as they flop around ) instead of crisp and stiff. The flavors were good. My husband was a bit disappointed with the $5 elk sausage that was 1 piece cut in half. He felt for the price he should have received 2 pieces for that add on at that size. For the quality of hotel they are sitting next to, the kitchen could step things up a bit. Just our experience however. read more
