Salt and Pepper chicken wings.
Anthony M.

Food was unlike I've ever had at any other Chinese food place, Tomato Egg Drop soup was amazing, small lunch portions to allow you to try appetizers and still have a good meal. Sat at the Bar and the Service was amazing, Bartender was great and friendly. Ambiance was good and not overly noisy.

Bone in Spare Ribs... awesome
David C.

Are here about 6-7 months ago. Nice ambiance. Food was fresh and hot and very good! Service was excellent! Everything was very good. A little pricey. Bone -in spare ribs is why you would go here!!! The best I have had since the early 2000's at Wu Loon Ming in Billerica! 10 out of 10... Egg Roll good too.

Great food and service. Enjoyed the lobster special immensely. After 15 years in So Cal we moved back to metro Boston recently and Bernard is still the place to go to!

Japanese udon with beef

Excellent! Japanese sauteed udon with beef. Highly recommend in the Mai tais are very strong and that means it's very good.

Spare Ribs on the Bone

Upscale Chinese joint, but you can probably guess that from it not being called "Bernie's." Stylistically, neither old school nor authentic Chinese, but more of a modern spin encompassing elements from both. Some sticker shock here--the prices are quite high--but the quality is generally worth it, with some items exhibiting wow factor. Nice atmosphere, professional service, and food created on a much higher plane than your typical takeout joint. Egg Rolls: Interestingly, they're made with beef and not pork. So the flavor isn't as intense, but the construction is still wonderful, with a crunchy, flavorful outer shell and an inner filling with crunchy celery and cabbage, along with the understated beef. Dipped into the duck sauce and mustard, still a pleasure. Pork Spareribs: Now THIS is the reason to come here. If you order only one item (and heck, you might only be able to afford one item), make sure it is this. They're babyback ribs, which isn't as common as the more typical spares from the belly. A less likely cut to be moist, but here they're beyond moist, reaching deep into juicy territory. The crusts are generously lacquered with a red glaze. A triumph of flavor and texture, these are one of the best renditions (if not THE best) of Chinese ribs I've ever had, and they've been repeatably excellent. Boneless Spareribs: Same great glaze, plentiful portion, good thickness, and VERY juicy. A little fatty in some spots, but not to the extent that it was an issue. Tender and delicious. Also among the best I've had. Pork Fried Rice: Cindy Crawford had a mole but she was still beautiful. Bernard's has lackluster pork fried rice, but still a great Chinese restaurant. No need to mince words: the rice here is too light, which might be fine for the more upscale entrées, but accompanying any of the old-school selections (most notably, the lobster sauce), it just doesn't cut it. Shrimp and Lobster Sauce: I love that you have a choice between the white sauce (a New York thing) and the dark sauce (a New England thing). The dark sauce version (really the only way to have it) was very gentle of texture, dark but not overly dark of color, and nicely flavored with black bean sauce and other subtle spices. Some peas thrown in, but not a problem. Not gloppy, not salty, just very tasty and healthier than you typically get. Not my #1 but easily among my top half dozen or so. The shrimp were plentiful and of medium size, cooked to a good snap. General Tso's Chicken: I tried this on a combination plate at lunchtime, and had low expectations, but this was surprisingly great. The chicken was of very high quality, and very juicy under the crisp batter that was lightly applied. The sauce had more oomph flavorwise than most, without being overly gloppy. Some Thai chili peppers gave it unexpected legitimate heat (let's face it, places always say this dish is spicy but it almost never is). Sizzling Chicken with Black Bean Sauce: Minimal sizzle but exceptionally tender chicken, again high quality, cut into large pieces. Good flavor to the black bean sauce, and not too salty. This dish is 99% meat and can go a long way. Udon Noodles with Vegetables: Thick. Lightly sauced. VERY slippery. Mostly broccoli and carrots. Not an exciting dish, but it's a way of getting some vegetables in along with a starch that's better than their too-light-for-me fried rice. Probably wouldn't get it again. Bernard's is the kind of food you can enjoy almost guilt-free, because it's clean and natural and won't leave you feeling gluttonous or regretfully queasy. You can still respect yourself (if perhaps not your spending) the next morning. Still, there's plenty of flavor, and for the right situation, this is the right place, even with fried rice that isn't quite up to the standards of the fantastic ribs, chicken, lobster sauce, and other entrees. For any devotee or all styles of Chinese, this is a must.

MDM Noodles is one of my weaknesses…read more Every time I pass by, I think about going in; then I remind myself that I bought groceries the day before and really ought to cook them, after which I think, "I could make noodle soup at home." And then I think about MDM Noodles again. The hand-pulled noodles are chewy, fresh, and delicious. The soups are full of flavor, deeply savory, and always satisfying. They're certainly delicious, but what I love most is that the bowls actually look beautiful. My dad always said Chinese cooking has to have three things: color, aroma, and taste (色香味), in that order. First, it has to look good. Then it has to smell good. Then, for Pete's sake, it had better taste good too. MDM gets all three right (色香味俱全). The soups are arranged with real care: vegetables layered, colors balanced, everything looking fresh and inviting. I eat a lot of noodle soup around Boston, and I have had some very pale, sad, skin-toned bowls. At that point, I might as well go home, save money, and make my own. MDM is not that. Their soups taste fresh, have tons of umami, and are pure comfort food for me. Noodle soup has always felt like home because my dad used to make it on Saturdays before driving me to music lessons. His noodle soups and MDM's are totally different, but somehow I still get that same feeling when I eat here. You do not come to MDM for ambiance. One time in the summer, I honestly couldn't tell whether they were open because the lights were so low. Were they saving energy? Were they creating mystery? Unclear. The service is good, but very direct. The prices are reasonable. Not cheap, exactly, but for the quality, flavor, and number of ingredients, absolutely worth it. I always leave full, happy, and very glad I ignored the groceries waiting at home.

I'm sure other dishes are good, but I was looking for good soup/noodle dishes. I'm not asian but any means so I can't speak to the authenticity of natural quality of the old friend noodles, but it wasn't for me. Perhaps egg drop soup, scallion pancakes, or other items I'd go for. This place has a lot of good ratings so I might give it a second chance. The noodles tasted more like spaghetti was added in. I left so much food behind as a result. I more so would go for korean or japanese noodle spots from now on.

Evidently, it's been there a few years, but the owner is on a tear, inviting influencers in to hype the place. Their content, much like the glossy menu photos, looks very good. But knowing full well that influencer content and menu photos are not always indicative of the real experience, I rolled the dice for a lunchtime visit. -- Spicy Wings: Nice presentation, with the wings nicely crisped, lightly glazed, and covered with an assortment of scallions, peppers, and herbs. You get a few different spice options; I went with the spiciest. It definitely hits you, but there's plenty of flavor involved in addition to mere heat. The wings are juicy as well. There's an ingredient in there that seemed very foreign to me, even though I've had more than my share of Sichuan food over the years. For me, it made it more interesting than good, but these were definitely good wings. Any fan of wings or spice should give them a try. -- Stir-Fried Pork with Long Hot Pepper (lunch combo): Gray pork that had none of the appetizing red hues of the menu photo. Coupled with green peppers (Anaheim-ish shape, but hotter) and no other vegetable (looked like the menu photo had onions). Unlike the wings, not much flavor beyond the heat. No browning to the meat; just a gray, dry, boring bite aside from the heat and steaminess (not to be confused with juiciness). It looked and felt like a microwaved reheat. -- Hot and Sour Soup (with the lunch combo): This one was very thick and very textured, though not gloppy. Good flavor, with heat and flavor levels both up there. But served disappointingly lukewarm at best, with several cold spots-- even though it was the last item to hit the table (yes, served after the entree). Okay, so big buildup, not a great meal, but not a bad meal. Maybe I was unlucky with the ordering and might connect better with different choices on another visit. That visit will probably come eventually -- but just as with my eventual faith in influencer content and menu photos, not right away.

If you judge Hippo Kitchen by its website, you might never order from here…read more The website is...an adventure. The menu is buried under what feels like a million ads, their Fantuan page isn't much better (although maybe that's just Fantuan), and I honestly had the easiest time figuring out what they served by looking at the menu photos on Yelp. One thing I learned while trying to order: the Chinese name, 荷媽廚房, is a cute pun on 河馬 ("hippopotamus"). Instead of the characters for "river horse," they use the characters for "lotus" (荷) and "mom" (媽), so it sounds almost the same while also reading like "(Lotus) Mom's Kitchen." I thought that was some adorbz wordplay. I called to place my order. A woman answered in Mandarin, which I immediately took as a good sign. I chickened out and switched to English. She switched to perfect English without missing a beat. Order placed. Fifteen minutes later, my food was ready. I ordered the spicy pork intestine and the Sichuan duck blood. Loading it onto my bike, the takeout container for the intestine felt surprisingly light, and I briefly wondered whether I was about to be disappointed. (Nope!) The intestine was fantastic: properly spicy, but also packed with layers of five-spice, chilies, and other aromatics. The duck blood was equally delicious. If you've never had it before, think silky tofu that has soaked up wonderfully spicy red oil. You know you're probably in the right place when the menu includes chicken hearts, gizzards, liver, pork kidney, and other offal, and most of the customers picking up their orders are Chinese. The menu also has plenty of charming spelling mistakes. OCR? Someone typing really fast? Your guess is as good as mine. Ordering was easy, they take credit cards, the food came out quickly, and everything tasted fresh. I'll definitely be back. There are far too many interesting dishes here for this to be my only visit.
