After reading Phantom Gourmet's online show video raving and suggested dishes to try, I decided it was time to try out this "Chinese Restaurant" located in chi-chi Chestnut Hill, and thinking it MUST BE good for Phantom Gourmet to feature, and for this restaurant to be around for nearly 30 years. I made a reservation on a Tuesday for a Thursday evening for my party; arrived on Thursday evening to a surprisingly full restaurant, which was smaller than I expected; had to wait at least 20 minutes, we looked at the menu beforehand, and my husband said: "Did you SEE the prices?!"--90% of the food items--entrees, dishes, except the Appetizers (but they were also quite expensive compared to other Chinese Restaurants I've been to) were in the double-digit price range!---hence another set-up in my mind that: "The dishes must be GREAT!".
We ordered as highly recommended/featured on Phantom Gourmet: The Scallion Pancakes: which my daughter remarked:"WHERE are the scallions?!"; The Chicken Fried Rice: Which were too salty, and the portions on the plate for sharing amongst the family was SMALL--again compared to other Chinese Restaurants, and didn't live up to the hyped Phantom Reviewer of "Soft, delicate texture...of how Fried Rice SHOULD be prepared and taste". Lastly, the Hot Pot Sizzling Chicken in Black Bean Sauce: VERY salty, and nothing spectacular tasting/appealing to vouch for its almost $20 cost; served in a small hot pot, with small, very salty chicken swimming in the black bean sauce(?).
We ordered other dishes also, not really worth mentioning/memorable, including overpriced Chicken Fingers, pan-seared Peking Raviolis (small plate), with portion & cost which have been half the price charged at another restaurant which I will suggest instead, later in Review.
The ONLY two "saving grace" from this first and LAST, PAYING dining experience at Bernards were: Our Waiter, who was young, friendly and helpful in understanding and accommodating to our first time experience, and to beverage refills, inquiries. Second, was that our waiter cleared the table of all empty plates, dishes, and brought out new plates after we finished our appetizers in the beginning, which seemed like Bernard's on-the-mark protocol to present a "clean, uncluttered dining table" for diners to await the Entree portion of their dining experience. For 4 entrees, 3 appetizers, (2) glass-poured, over ice Cokes, the bill came to $147 with tip!!!---Holey Mackerel!---Thank God I got paid today from work!--was my reaction. Came away feeling "ripped off", non-satiable from food portions, and knowing that Bernard's meal prices were so overpriced so that they can pay their monthly commercial rental location, and their other overhead costs, and profit; My family I agreed that we would never go back to Bernard's as elective, paying diners---IF a friend wants to invite and pay for us to join them--that's the ONLY way we'd ever dine at Bernards!
The Chinese Restaurant that I had in mind in comparison, which I HIGHLY recommend to all Newton/Chestnut Hill and other surrounding town Chinese Foodies, who don't care for and can see past the "new, ornate, chi chi" dining room decorations, location of physical location of restaurant--please try: Green Tea Restaurant, 24 Elliot St, Newton, MA 02461
Phone:(617) 965-2260; the food quality, portions, and PRICES are reasonable, and you will leave with a more satisfying tummy and dining experience, and GUARANTEE, your bill at the end would still be less than HALF of the $147 bill from Bernards!
Also Yelp should CHANGE the "$$" to more like "$$$" to reflect the TRUE cost of Bernard's food items on their menu.
UPDATE since my last review: Unfortunately my above-recommended, preferred Green Tea Chinese Restaurant has closed---and I unfortunately STILL see Bernards Chinese Restaurant; STILL able to stay open with their overly-priced, mediocre food to unsuspecting/non-savvy, Chinese food-consuming customers who are willing to support/pay this restaurant to remain in Chestnut Hill leased space. read more
