Needed my annual eye exam and used ZocDoc to book an appointment with Bergen Optometry. The office is located on a busy Street in Hackensack where there is only metered street parking but I was able to find a spot right away. I arrived early to my appointment and they checked me in and had me wait in the spacious waiting room area where they have a cute coffee station. I was seen at my scheduled time and the Optometry Assistant who took the initial screenings and photos of my eyes was very friendly and thorough. Dr. Tong was who administered my detailed eye examination and let me just say she is sooooo thorough! She asked all the questions I expected and many others I didn't expect but mattered. She explained everything she was doing and explained in detail what all of her readings and photographs showed. Great experience! Prior to my appointment the receptionist was thorough in explaining my upcoming appointment. At the appointment the doctor was quick and efficient despite the business of the office. She even provided a thorough explanation of all results. The eyewear tech was very helpful and supportive in choosing a pair perfect for me. She was upfront and helpful about out of pocket costs versus insurance too! Its my first pair in over 15 years! I had my initial visit at Bergen Optometry earlier this afternoon. Setting up an appointment online was quick and convenient. My appointment was for 3PM and I was seen almost immediately. I must've been seated in the waiting area for less than 5 minutes. Everyone I interacted with was friendly and helpful. During my screening, it was explained to me that they offered more in-depth testing but the tests are not covered by insurance. I appreciated that they were so up front about it and they even said how much it would cost without me asking. I like when places aren't pushy about upselling. I saw Dr. Puleo for my eye exam and she was efficient and thorough. She did a great job of explaining everything about my exam to me. After my exam the staff helped me shop for contact lenses and they even found that I would be eligible for a rebate. The prices were definitely fair and I was completely satisfied with my visit. If Bergen Optometry accepts your insurance I highly recommend going to them for your eye care needs. read more

I've been a customer at Bergen Optometry for a few years now and always have a great experience. From checking in to walking out the door, the process is smooth, quick, and enjoyable. My favorite part of the experience is the staff. They're a shining example and combination of professionalism and kindness. Dr. Pinsky and Christine, the optical tech, both make sure you're comfortable and explain each step to make sure you're informed and educated. I love selecting my new frames with Edna, who is so patient with me while I umm and hmm over frames. She also makes great recommendations and will answer any questions you have about pricing and coverage. Decided on contact lenses this time around. The selection of frames they have are very stylish and modern. I hope to go back and get frames next time. The shop has very nice interior. I haven't been here in a few years, and it looks newly renovated, I use to go years ago and it looks completely different and brand new and brighter interior. Ideally, I would love to be able to browse the frames on my own, the ones that are within my budget that are in the drawers. The staff from the front desk to the vision tester to the optometrist to the young lady that helps you pick your glasses were friendly and professional. I totally trust their doctors. All tests were explained with recommendations and rational. Your eye vision is very important to them as well as how you look and feel in your glasses. The equipment is up to date and they have nice frames in every price bracket. You can get designer or something " practical ". A great experience all around. I've been getting glasses for 45 years since the age of 9. This place is top tier and very modernized which I love. read more

I was a Hackensack resident for 20 years and moved out of the area a few years back. Yet I still drive almost an hour just to get here. They are courteous, knowledgeable, and in network with almost all insurances. The optometrists are pleasant, and they have state of the art equipment. *Would highly not recommend* I arrived at my annual exam appointment and was assisted promptly. I was taken through the initial exams, informed of extra exams, and accepted, and all was fine and pleasant. My eyes were dilated, and I was informed it would be a few minutes, so they asked me to wait in the entrance area. I noticed that my vision was getting blurrier, which was expected. One of the staffers asked that I sit in the chair right next to the huge windows that they have near the entrance. It's quite confusing that this process wasn't thoroughly considered. A customer's eyes are dilated and asked to sit next to the large windows with the sun beaming through. Was there any thought given to this process? I had to avoid facing the window due to the intense sunlight. It became unbearable, and I had to move to the other side. How is someone supposed to select glasses/frames under these conditions? I got up and went to the front desk, waiting for someone to return to tell them I was leaving. After a few minutes, I was asked to return to the back to continue the tests. I was asked if I selected glasses. Are they not aware of what happens when pupils are dilated? I told her I was upset about being in direct sunlight after my eyes were dilated, and she wanted to explain that the windows were UV-coated. I don't care! In what universe is it right to dilate someone's eyes and place them in direct sunlight, then expect them to select glasses while the sun is beaming hard and so strong? Aftter the final tests were complete, I went back to the front and were asking me if I was going to select glasses or etc., I just wanted to leave so, I asked, "can I pay now" as I just wanted to leave ASAP and never come back. Did anyone think the process through? I don't care if I was offered an apology and free glasses/contacts, I'm not interested in returning. I recommend that anyone who needs to have their eyes dilated go elsewhere where the windows are dark/tinted enough to combat such strong sun rays. A better option is to find a location where the windows are better tinted/process is thought out or a regular location where it's not so bright and ask to sit next to huge windows with your eyes at full dilatation. It's incredible that they've been in business so long and haven't figured out that it's not kind to place a person with eyes fully dilated next to huge windows and/or ask them to pick glasses whenever the pair looks the same since you can't see clearly. ((facepalm)) TL;DR: I would NEVER RECOMMEND/RETURN! read more

I can't believe all the poor reviews. I didn't experience any of that behavior. As for the doctors I can speak on all of them but Dr. Karina Puleo Is excellent! She is very personable and knowledgeable. Dr Puleo was also very friendly and a pleasure to speak with during my exam. The Dr also explained everything in detail. She was very courteous prompt. No waiting at all. She did more than a basic eye exam. Since I have diabetes she went above and beyond and did several in depth retinal scans. She found things my primary missed. The staff was very friendly and thorough. They have many many frame choices as well as lens options. I highly recommend Bergen Optometry. We all have bad days and should reconsider giving them another shot and recommend Dr Puleo. read more

I was struggling to find an optometrist due to my issues (laser treatment due to retinal detachment, astigmatism, myopia) but this office has a really nice team! It was my first visit and Dr. Puelo made sure I didn't walk out without double checking my vision concerns and clarity. I received trial lenses that so far are working like a charm!! I have been going to Bergen optometry for almost 15 years if not more when I first started going there my kids are grown now, but they were kids they have been providing excellent customer service excellent services, and they take time to explain in detail what I need and how to apply it in my daily life and here it is now 2023 and I'm still there that says a lot quality is the best assurance that everything in your life will go well they give you the quality, thank you baby care, and the expertise in finding the frame where you couldn't pay for that I highly recommend this company just try them one time and you'll be back again and again like I have been.
