I haven't been to Ben's Crab in a long time but this is my favorite place to get great seafood. For my appetizer I had the BBQ Honey Garlic Wings with the Cajun fries and for my drink I had the Lychee Martini. They were both very good. For my entree I had Combo F which consisted of lobster, crab legs, shrimp (head off) with potatoes and corn. I chose the Ben's Special Blend Sauce and the spice level was medium. The boil was delicious but it definitely lacked corn and potatoes. Also it was very oily. The service was excellent and the waiter was very attentive. WOW! Nobody could have prepared me for the meal I had at Ben's Crab. I was so blown away by the quality of food I just ate, not even 5 minutes have gone by since leaving the restaurant. I couldn't wait to write a stellar review. Our experience: We were seated immediately upon walking in and given menus right away. Within two minutes, we met our server, June. June was great! She really helped seal the deal on our experience. She made some good recommendations and checked up on our table frequently. So let's start with ambiance. It feels like a seafood boil space so that's a good start but the boil is where it goes flat. It tastes like they boil the seafood in water. Then rely on the sauce on top so it's not a deep flavor. I ordered the crawfish which I had to sent back because not only was it bland it wasn't fresh. We had the fried calamari and liberty oysters to start. Both delicious. My favorite dish of the evening was the oysters. For the entrees we had the lobster mac, large shrimp creamy pasta, fried catfish, and a seafood boil with king crab and shrimp in a spicy garlic butter sauce. As sides we had the hush puppies and brussel sprouts which were both very good. I'd say the weakest dish was the catfish but it was by no means bad. The boil was delicious as was the pasta. The mac had a lot of lobster. Usually places skimp on lobster meat but they didn't. Service was decent. The staff is really friendly. I've pass this place for several years, my girlfriend recommended we go. For starters you have to climb a long flight of stairs, I saw the elevator but I don't know if it was operating. The decor is very basic, nothing that stands out. I ordered a cup of gumbo, it didn't taste bad but, it tasted more like a vegetable soup than a gumbo. This review is long overdue! I've been to Ben's Crab twice--once with my daughter and once with the bros--and both visits were a blast. The servers were super communicative and made my daughter's day by offering her all kinds of juices, which I appreciated. When I went with the bros, we all tried different seafood boils, and none of us had any complaints. I always go for the garlic butter--it's so good I want to drink the whole bag, despite knowing the health risks! Drinks were also on point. Needless to say I was not impressed, they gave very good potions but the taste just wasn't doing it. I also ordered the shrimp basket for starters, which was plain fried shrimp no seasoning. It came with fries dusted in Cajun seasoning. My friend ordered the lobster roll that was just plain, cold and lacked flavor as well. On the other hand the drinks were very strong. The ambiance reminds me of the Cajun boil restaurants in Brooklyn and the Lower East Side. Very modern, hip hop music vibes, drinks in abundance. It also gave me the feel of being in Atlanta. Ben's is not your typical restaurant in Oceanside and that threw me for a loop! It's so modern and it has character. Our waiter arrived and he took our drink orders. My homie suggested the Frenchman(henessey, marnier and a chaser). It arrived and it was a kick to the kidneys! It was good but the bartenders here are suppppper heavy handed. We ordered our food and I went with the crab cake sliders appetizer in which 3 sliders are served. It was so filling I never finished my cocktail. The crab cakes were big and delicious. Food was expertly prepared for those who enjoy a good ole' Louisiana Cajun seafood boil. Along with the seafood boil sets, we also got a few dishes including the Shrimp cocktail and their Catfish and Soft shell crab baskets, that came with yummy Cajun fries. Flavorful coating on the fried seafood, my personal preference was the battered soft shell crab dipped in their tangy garlicky sauce. For their boils, there's various combos available to mix-and-match the seafood choices and sauces. We got an array of King crab legs, Snow crab legs, shrimp and crawfish, mixed with Ben's Special Cajun sauce and their garlic butter sauce. Good amount of food based on weight, and the fresh steamed seafood had the perfect amount of flavors and spices with a good kick. They put friends under the oysters and then we ordered fries that came free with Yelp. That was confusing Bc it looked like it was just to puff up the basket not sure what that was about. My friends soup was good. But the 3 stars came when I ordered a crab leg combo with garlic butter. It looked like it was garlic with crab. The amount of garlic was overwhelming. My waitress kindly accommodated my complaint by bringing out a new boil combo with a different sauce option. But it was the same order that I bit into. Now I'm no expert on how things work at a restaurant, so let's just base this on coming sense. Visited this restaurant about a week ago. While the food was very good, it was also very greasy, not too many healthy options on the menu. However, it's great option if you are looking for a massive cheat day! We ordered the fried calamari, which was good but a ton a breading made it almost impossible to taste the actual calamari. We also got the garlic bread appetizer which was very good. For our main course we ordered the lobster and shrimp combo meal, which came with corn and potatoes in a garlic butter sauce. The presentation was cool - they take the food out to you in a plastic bag, shake it up with the sauce of your choice, and put the bag of food into a bowl. The portion was great, enough for 2 people easily. The food itself I would probably give 3 stars, but the service was very good, making it more of a 4 star experience. Very friendly staff and very attentive. Social distancing was also observed, masks required, and hand sanitizer provided on all the tables. Hi so dinning during Covid is different. When you come into the parking lot there is Valet parking. I don't think there's an option to park your car on your own. They do it for you. It's a nice thing to do but during covid I definitely felt a little weird. My friend and I sat down and the day we went it wasn't too cold. The sitting was outside under a tent, and there were two giant heaters to make the area warm. I think during colder times the heater is a must. So I'm glad this establishment had it. We looked at the menu and wasn't too sure about what to get. I didn't really go into the inside of the restaurant so I can't give commentary on the appearance. Staff and fellow customers did follow covid guidelines, so that's a plus. The drinks were also made exceptionally well. A balance of sweet and alcohol. I didn't feel as if they skimped on the alcohol. They do give you a bucket, gloves and a bib as you're eating the crab. The restaurant also places hand sanitizer on every table and throughout the restaurant. The food is also prepared exceptionally well and I love every second of it. 1lb of crab is literally two giant snow crabs, and they toss in about 10 pieces of shrimp thats equivalent to a 1lb. The lobster was also amazing. Although the place does cost a hefty penny, I think its worth it especially if you love seafood and fine dining. read more
