10/10 pizza slices were huge, fast & delicious! The outdoor area needed some cleaning, but we enjoyed the outdoor eating area!

I've been going to Benny D'Amato's Pizza for years, especially when I used to work downtown. I stopped going for a while, but I recently came back for their 10-year anniversary $1 cheese slice special--and it took me right back. Still just as good. The slices here are HUGE--like, you need two plates just to hold one. It's super filling and definitely worth the price (usually around $5 for a cheese slice, a little more for toppings). I'm not normally a thin crust person, but their thin crust is actually really good. The cheese is flavorful, the crust has a great texture, and even a plain slice hits. That said, I'd definitely recommend trying one of their specialty slices too. The shop itself is pretty small with limited seating, so it's more of a grab-and-go spot. During lunch rush, it can get packed, but service is usually quick and the staff has always been friendly in my experience. They also have extras like Parmesan and peppers so you can dress up your slice however you like. Overall, if you're in downtown Norfolk and want a solid, no-frills pizza spot with massive slices, this is definitely the place to go. read more

Came here because I was feeling nostalgic with Benny's but the pizza is still normal as usual - just needed to add sauce, oregano, pepper, to make it more tasty. Delicious Late Night Bite. Open passed midnight, large portions, great pricing, and right around the corner from many hotels. After driving 8+ hours and checking into my hotel late, I was looking food and the clerk recommended this place. Obviously, I took the suggestion. I was able to walk to the establishment in less than 10 minutes. Being one of the only places open passed midnight, it was a bit busy and only one worker was present. Decor gives hole in the wall. Not much room inside to dine in so many of the guests took their slices to-go. When I saw how large the slices were I realized one slice of pepperoni was gonna be plenty for me and I was not wrong. Finished the night with a satisfied tummy. If I was In town for couple more nights, I would've come back for another late night bite. A bucket list item for all foodies! An awesome pizza eating experience that is one of kind with its huge slices, jumbo breadsticks, cheap prices, and unique locations. Super fun interior, quick service, and perfect lunch/dinner spot to have for a memorable experience. For this Benny's location, parking is the only downside. You'll most likely have to park in the parking garage which will only cost you a few extra steps. And after eating this, you'll need those extra steps. There is street parking but depending on day/time, it'll most likely be occupied. read more

Let me tell you - this pizza isn't just gimmicky, it's the savior of house parties, the must-have stop on a night out, and the highlight of returning to the area after everything else has closed. Benny's counter-service of both by the slice and whole pizzas is fantastic on its own, but with their caring and real staff, the fact that you can walk in at any hour they're open and talk to a non-corporate person who cares about your day (and your lunch!), you've got a recipe for success. Are the pizzas big? yes. Is the taste just as big? Not always. But that's okay! It's not gourmet tasting pizza, but the experience in itself is worthy of top three of the area in my opinion. Whew. I'm not sure what all the rave is about. But all their greatness must have been hiding in a really good spot because I sought and definitely couldn't find it. The place itself is really shabby, small & hot inside. The slices of pizza are definitely mammoth size. The taste unremarkable. Canned & bottled drinks are available for purchase in the fridge. Honestly, everything was looking like it's been through some hard times. While I'm thankful they had a restroom, it was questionable. If you have ever been to hardcore/punk shows you know they aren't held in the best shape venues, (like King's Head back in the day) their restroom was almost at that level. The redeeming factor was the presence of paper towels, soap & running water. It was so hot & stifling inside that we sat at the high table outside where it was more comfortable. Nothing super special about the restaurant itself! Your typical pizza place with a small area inside to sit down and eat. There is also some seating outside. It is in downtown, so parking could be a little inconvenient. But the pizza? Man oh man! The biggest slices I've ever seen in my life, and it was so good! 1 piece is like 3 regular pieces! They sell by the slice, and they also sell 28in whole pies. The cashier was your typical 20 something year old guy, so customer service was neither here nor there. But we were able to get our food super fast! Would definitely return for a quick slice or a pie for a large group! I saw some previous reviews done in the summer where folks complained about the heat. Currently it's about 60 outside, and the restaurant was comfortable. I'll have to take notes about how it feels depending on the next time I visit! There is one of those huge ovens in the front, so I wonder if that contributes to the heat factor especially in the warmer months! read more

I can't say enough great things about Benny Damato's! It is a small hole-in-the-wall in Downtown Norfolk with a small pizza and drink selection, however, the options are your typical go-to. Be advised, each slice is huge and absolutely phenomenal! Staff is friendly, and if you are looking for an interesting pizza, this place is a must-visit. The flavor and taste are all in the same, but the lowered star comes in through the condition of the restaurant. It feels as if the place has gone through some things. The lighting is dim, the bathroom is in poor condition, and the seating either indoors or out needs a good cleaning. Our group tried the best to enjoy the once lively spot but found ourselves lost for words except asking what happened to this place? Even the drink fridge looked rusted inside, and the bathroom was described to me from a "haunted house" with wood planks on the toilet and a cage around the sink. So sadly, this will be the last time we venture to this location and stick with the VB town center location. read more

We were walking down the street and wondered where the great pizza shell came from. Looked on the map, this was the only pizza place nearby. Went in, that was the great smell. Got a slice each, they are huge. $5 for cheese $6 for pepperoni or sausage and one slice does you. By far the best pizza I've had lately. If I was local I'd make it a regular place. It was a bargain and good. One slice is usually enough for a normal eater but my 20 year old son can eat 2. It's a pizza joint and seating inside is limited but there is outside seating and if you're down for a quick walk you can eat on the water. read more

This place may look like just a hole in the wall random pizza joint, but for a mere $6, you can literally get one of the best original NY style slices of pepperoni pizza I've had in a long time. The slice is massive, it literally takes up two plates, and one slice is likely what most people would need to be full. The cashier was friendly, it only took about five minutes for my slice to heat up, and then I was on my way. Definitely a great choice for lunch in downtown Norfolk. There are also a few tables inside should you choose to eat there in person, and I saw them taking a whole pizza out of the oven that was literally almost the diameter of a car tire. I stayed in Norfolk for two days and I gotta say, this place did not disappoint in the slightest. It was the highlight of our two day trip here. The pizza reminded me of New York style pizza. Flavorful, right amount of grease, tasty pepperoni with a nice tasty crunch at the end of the slice. The cashier and owner were very kind and hospitable. Made us feel welcome and appreciative for dining with them. The store was clean, with good background music playing in the background. The cooler had nice stickers decor and the walls had interesting pictures up for the decor. I highly recommend this place when you're nearby the area. Have been to other Bennys locations and was somewhat disappointed with my experience. I ordered the Bro Cheese: Cheese pizza with crispy onions, roasted broccoli topped with beer cheese. It seems as tho they were all mushed together and placed on top of a cheese slice? It was good flavor but was not what seemed to be advertised at all. CAN YOU SAY JUMBO SLICE ?!?!?! They have cheese, pepperoni and sausage ((but not today)) and two speciality flavors. Pizza slices range from $6-$7 a piece - which at first sounded crazy, until a MONSTER slice on two plates and sent it my way. Unless you are starving, this is a one slice stop shop! They do have full 28" pies ranging from $33-40. Pizza was good- crust had a nice crisp to it, good ratio of sauce to cheese and had good flavor. Tons of canned or bottled beverages- I got a canned root beer from NY, and yummmmm, the perfect compliment to my slice. Small place, but they do have some bar type seating and a small outdoor area. We were not greeted when we came in and basically walked into an empty restaurant, so much so that the couple who walked in right before us left, since no one was behind the counter. Make sure you get a receipt. 4 slices of pepperoni pizza with 2 drinks came out to $30 even. The server let me know their screen was broken so I won't see my total, but asked if I'd like to leave a tip. I said no. For some reason I didn't get a receipt, but no biggie at the time. We were enjoying our day exploring beautiful downtown Norfolk on our recent trip to the Virginia Beach area and knew we wanted to try a pizza spot. We chose this place based on the reviews. The inside is pretty small and seating was limited which was appreciated since it's during COVID-19, but luckily most people were grabbing slices to go. The outside seats were full so we went ahead and chose an available table inside. The woman behind the counter was hard at work placing some of the largest pizzas I've ever seen into the oven. The slices are huge! They keep the menu very simple with just a few different options so it's easy to figure out what you want and place your order. My boyfriend ordered a slice of plain cheese and I decided to try the monthly special which was bacon mac and cheese pizza (calories don't count on vacation, right?) After a short wait our slices were fresh out of the oven and ready to enjoy! It takes two paper plates to hold these slices. We sat down and dug in, and I have to say this is one of the best thinner crust style pizzas I've had. I've found a lot of pizza I enjoy in the Orlando area over my years of living there, but there was just something special about this pizza. The crust was perfect, the cheese had a great flavor, and the bacon mac and cheese topping was delicious. My boyfriend was equally impressed. The pizza is a little light on sauce (I often order extra sauce from spots at home), but the amount on there worked fine with this slice. I could barely finish my slice, but managed because it was just so darn delicious. This was our first time visiting this area and I'm sure there are lots of great pizza spots in town, but I know when I have the opportunity to visit Norfolk again I'll be hitting up this place for a delicious slice. read more

Benny's is my favorite place to grab pizza. My family and I are big believers in single slices. We all like different things, and being able to get our own slice, that's practically the size of my face, is a win win. This location is in the heart of Norfolk, and is a walk away from so many other bars and restaurants. It's a small little pizza shop, and doesn't have a lot of seating. There's a couple chairs inside, and some outside. It can be difficult to eat with a large group, so I recommend ordering it to go. Overall, the pizza is made fresh. The people who work here are always friendly, and they do a good job of answering any questions you have. There's a variety of soda and topping options (if you ask). Its price friendly, and you can essentially get a whole meal for under $10. I recommend to all my fellow broke college students. read more

I have been hearing from the nursing staff at my place of employment how good the pizza is at Benny's. I reside in Newport News and decided to take the drive for some pizza. My experience was awful. The young man behind the counter had the worst attitude and seemed very inconvenienced to have to serve me. No communication in regard to how long it would take to have the pizza prepared and baked. He seemed annoyed explaining the different types of pizza and his facial expression showed he was more bothered when I asked him to double cut my pizza slices. There was a "customer" helping himself to the soft drinks in the refrigerated case the " customer " appeared to be friends with the workers. He was able to get the bothered young man to smile and laugh. I just read a few reviews which seem to be similar to mine. The owner needs to be more selective in his hiring process and provide customer service in-services. As a medical provider, I would have loved to have this establishment cater a few medical centers and events but after my disappointment experience I would rather find somewhere else. The place was dim and very dusty. The pizza was ok; the crust didn't seem done. For 48.00 I couldve gone to Granby Street Pizza which is amazing with happy staff and great customer service. 1st impressions are the lasting impression. Sadly, I definitely won't be back. We are an absolute fan of their pizza!! I love how thin and crispy the crust is! It's always hot and fresh! My son ask to eat here every time we are walking around downtown. I had the Bambino pizza this time and it was just amazing! Loves the heat and the jalapeños were a nice kick! My son and husband had the pepperoni and both loved it. We always get more than we can eat. 3 slices could easily 4 people. They are massive! We also always have a wonderful experience with the employees. Always so helpful and nice.
