So I headed to NCW one Saturday and had a large shrimp fried rice and two shrimp eggrolls. The rice was just this side of being totally bland. Which is surprising given that they had sprouts, pods, scallions and a few of the other ingredients I find in the rice I like. But it had only the slightest hint of flavor. The shrimp were tiny and pink which suggested they were either boiled beforehand and added in or just weren't cooked long enough. I would guess the latter, especially since I had a few sections of rice that had were still white due to not being mixed with the soy sauce and fried long enough. Adding soy sauce and sweet and sour sauce helps, but good rice should stand on its on. This rice did not. As for the eggrolls? Meh. I don't know this to be the case, but the eggrolls felt like something a restaurant would order from a large supplier,and then fry them to order. I could be wrong, but I said that because in addition to the eggrolls being extremely bland, they had absolutely nothing colorful or distinctly flavorful within. It was fried perfectly, but had absolutely no punch or flavor, save for adding some sweet and sour sauce. All in All the food was underwhelming but passable. It didn't taste bad, the problem is it barely had any taste at all. The question is: would i order it again? Me thinks not. If I were in a remote town and this was like one of the two Chinese options then maybe. Problem is this is Chicago and you can't go more than a few miles or stoplights without passing a Chinese restaurant. A delicious one at that.

Benjarong is an affordable place to eat quality Thai food. A lot less than Thipi Thai for the same type of of chicken, beef or tofu dishes. You would spend less than $10 if you're not getting seafood dishes. I usually spend $13 for Spicy Talay (or Spicy Seafood) which by default has shrimp, squid and imitation crab. I usually special order Spicy Talay with scallops substituting crabmeat, it's better tasting that way. Every single time I've been there, I've always ordered Spicy Talay and another dish (usually one of their curries). Love love love their peanut sauce! Soft texture and creamy. I went to all the Thai restaurants in and near Countryside, IL and by far Benjarong is excellent in terms of pricing and selection of Thai Cuisine. I wish that they would expand their dessert selection a little bit, maybe add Mango & Sticky Rice in their dessert menu. Other Thai restaurants I've been to & my opinions of my visit there: Thipi Thai-Expensive but I like their Nutty Salmon, I usually go there once in while on a Sunday since Benjarong is closed Sundays Yau's Place-I ordered Singapore Noodles and the dish was too oily, I thought they were trying to give me a heart attack. The second time I was there was on a Saturday at 3:05pm and they rather turned our business away because "the kitchen is closed at 3pm". We offered to do a take-away, but they still said "no" so I haven't been there since. I prefer spending my money on a nicer friendlier establishment such as Benjarong. Cida Thai-I ordered from Cida Thai a couple of times because they deliver. The food is a little blah to my taste, I like their cucumber salad though. Their delivery guy was very friendly & had a great smile. And they sent me a Christmas card, how sweet. Fine Thai-Pretty decent food but they don't make my dishes hot enough to my taste.
