Text confirming my table is ready. 48 minutes after our 7:30 reservation but table was not ready and hostess was confused.
    Xtina E.

Is Terri short for Terrible? Because it's definitely not short for Terrific. I came here last night to celebrate my graduation with a party of 10 and it was an experience I will never forget, unfortunately not for the right reasons. The staff was genuinely wonderful, kind, congratulatory, and apologetic about the wait. Our hibachi chef Chris was absolutely fantastic. I wish I could give the team 5 stars, because they deserve it. We had a 7:30 reservation and were told there was an hour delay. We asked to wait in the bar area and employees said yes, so we sat and ordered sushi and drinks. Then the manager Terri came over huffing and puffing, scolded us, and told us we couldn't sit there, claiming she was "reserving" those tables for a party. Here's what's important: every other table in that bar area had guests doing the exact same thing, waiting on their reservations, having drinks or sushi, no full dinner plates. She walked past all of them and singled out our group specifically. There was no signage, no communication to the staff who had just told us we could sit there, and the chairs weren't even arranged for a party. WE had put them together. When I pointed out that her own staff had allowed us to sit there and that clearer communication would have prevented the confusion, she became hostile. My brother addressed her conduct and she threatened to cancel our entire reservation and remove us from the restaurant. We moved and arranged another set of tables to fit our group, which she also could have done for her party to avoid this whole situation. At 8:18 PM I received a text from OpenTable confirming my table was ready. When I went up, staff asked our party to stand by the wines to be seated. They looked at their tickets and were surprised, because it wasn't my name even though I got the text. They looked at their system and found my name still on the waitlist and not up for a table. They pointed at an image of tables and said they would need to talk to Terri to figure out what happened. I then watched Terri quietly approach a group that had just entered the bar area. One person in that party said "yay, she saved the night" as they were taken to a table. Two systems confirmed I was next. OpenTable and the waitress's own ticket. We were not actually seated until 8:42 PM. I have the OpenTable text and photo timestamps to prove it. Check the security footage. This is not disorganization. This is a predatory practice. People come here for birthdays, graduations, and anniversaries. They have driven there, gotten dressed up, and have nowhere else to go on short notice. Overbooking knowing that customers are essentially stuck is intentional, and it is at customers' expense. This is a one-manager problem. The rest of the team deserves 5 stars. But Terri should not be running this location, and based on a year's worth of reviews saying the exact same thing, Benihana is not listening, despite directing everyone to benihanalistens.com. Ironic. Also referred to as Terry in other reviews. I invite you to search her name both ways.

A Diminished Feast in the Realm of Flavor Greetings, noble travelers! Captain 619 here, pen in hand, ready to recount a recent journey to the fabled establishment known as Benihana in the enchanted land of San Diego. It has been many moons since I last ventured here with my kin, and I had hoped for a grand feast to celebrate our 36th wedding anniversary. Alas, my hopes were dashed upon the rocky shores of disappointment. As I crossed the threshold into this culinary realm, I found the bathrooms to be lacking in the care befitting a realm of such supposed grandeur. They were in disarray, as if neglected by the very sprites tasked with their upkeep. Furthermore, the table where we were seated bore the remnants of past feasts--food residue clinging stubbornly to its surface, a grim reminder of battles fought and won by previous patrons. The ambiance felt aged and weary, as though the magic that once filled the air had faded into a distant memory. I longed for a feast worthy of our anniversary, yet what awaited us was a banquet that fell short of our expectations--a mere shadow of the glorious gatherings of yore. In this moment of reflection, I can only hope that the guardians of this establishment will rekindle the spirit that once made it a beacon of culinary delight. Until that day comes, dear friends, I shall seek my feasts elsewhere, yearning for a time when the tables are set anew and the laughter of patrons fills the air once more. May your quests be filled with flavor and joy! Captain 619

    HIBACHI STEAK

It's been a long time that I haven't been in Benihana... nothing changed though. Their customer service still superb, the performance of the chef and the food, spectacular! Shout out to Fausto! He's not too loud but still funny. He's cooking is so entertaining! Big portions too!!! Even the waitress is great! I didnt get her name. My hubby and I got the 5-course meal. Mine is the Oceanture and my husband got the Steak Hibachi. I got used to getting green tea matcha ice cream at the end of the dinner, I didn't know that the package we got doesn't include the ice cream. But our waitress was kind enough to offer it to us on the house. I was just too full already so I respectfully declined... but that's really nice of her! We'll surely come back

Happy Hour Menu & Exotic Mojito
    Amie C.

Decided to hit up the weekday happy hour on a whim. Sat at the bar since I was by myself. Matthew & Drew were the bartenders and they were super attentive. They both made an AMAZING Exotic Mojito ($9 for HH). I'm so stuffed because I ordered so much. It was so good. I definitely will be back again, and hopefully my guys are working again when I come in!

Jesse B. did an absolutely AMAZING job! From the moment we got there, he made the entire experience unforgettable. He got us seated quickly, was incredibly entertaining, and his cooking was beyond excellent. The food was delicious, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. You can truly tell he cares about giving guests the best experience possible. This isn't even our first time with him, and every single time he exceeds expectations. Jesse B brings such great energy, talent, and personality to the table. If you get the chance to have Jesse B., you are seriously in for an incredible experience. Highly, highly recommend!

Stopped by Benihana and sat at the bar only, and it turned out to be a great experience. The bar area has a fun but relaxed atmosphere, perfect if you want Benihana food without doing the full hibachi table. The bartenders were friendly and attentive, and drinks came out quickly. Happy hour is a nice bonus with good deals on both drinks and appetizers. Everything we ordered was fresh and tasty, and service was consistently good. Definitely a great spot for a casual night out, drinks with friends, or a quick date night. I'd come back again just for the bar and happy hour! https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8QujBeC/

If you want the Hibachi/teppanyaki show then you need to sit at the grill. There were over a dozen tables with grills that seat 8 each. You'll be sharing space with others. We shared the filet mignon ($54) 5 course meal that comes with onion soup, salad, shrimp, vegetables, 2 dipping sauces, rice (option to upgrade to chicken fried rice), hot green tea. The 6 course has ice cream added. The chef did his thing with the dancing utensils and egg along with the I heart u rice. Loved that he automatically split our portions on the plate. Instead of an upgrade, we ordered Chicken rice ($9) by itself. We were shocked that it was the same size as the others who upgraded. The rice was just full of butter and bland. We also ordered Shrimp crunchy roll ($19) and Chili ponzu yellowtail roll ($25). The crunchy roll was not crunchy. It was like old panko. I think Benihana lost its touch over the decades and we were not impress by the quality of food, smaller portions and high prices.

    Miguel our funny cook

It's been a long time since I've been to Benihana. We were celebrating a friend's bday and it was fun enough. Our cook was Miguel who was very funny. I felt it was more like a comedy show vs like the good old days where they performed tricks like throwing the shrimp tail into the hat. No more throwing food in the air , just tapping the spatulas loudly. He did do the smoke and fire thing with the onion rings. There were 6 of us so we had the entire table to ourselves. I ordered the 6 course meal which included soup, salad, shrimp, zucchini, mushrooms, the Splash N' Meadow which was steak and shrimp, fried rice and ice cream. The steak was cooked perfectly - medium rare. I felt the food was a little salty but it was tasty because of all the butter they used. LOL. I also ordered a Hugo Spritz which was good. (There's a full bar.) Service was good. This was expensive, about $60 for each meal choice and cocktails were about $16-18 each. So after tax and gratuity, it was about $100 per person. You can definitely get better food else where but it's more for the novelty. They sang "Happy Bday" and jiggled a tambourine to our friend. They don't take the complimentary Benihana photo of your party anymore. As mentioned before they don't do as many tricks anymore so to me it's not as great . I think you can sign up online and on your bday month you get $30 off. Parking was difficult as the parking lot was full so we had to find street parking. Is this a place I would go to all the time? No, but maybe once in a blue moon for someone's bday.

A Guide to the Perfect Dinner at Benihana Make a reservation for Friday for 4 at 7:30pm. Show up 5 minutes early and check-in and receive your buzzer to alert when table is ready. Go to bar with your party and have drink. You've finished your drink. The buzzer alerts you at 8:25 your table is ready Your group is seated. This is your 1 chance to order and get drinks for the next hour. It's 9pm, no chef. There is no server. Go to bar and retrieve drinks for your party. Send birthday-lady to find a manager. 9:05 Discuss alternative eating solutions and order Dominos to Benihana. 9:20 Welcome your chef. 9:30 Take in the wonder of the Onion Volcano. 9:31 Receive Dominos Pizza. 9:34 Eat fried rice. 9:40 Consider the rib eye you've just been served. 9:50 Admit dinner failure.

If my husband and I didn't love Benihana in general, this review would be lower. We've apparently been spoiled by the Beverly Hills and Santa Monica locations because this location is managed very poorly. Our reservation was at 6pm and our chef did not arrive at the table until 7:10pm. The parking lot is very small, with half of it reserved for valet (I think $8?). There's some street parking right outside the lot if you're feeling lucky. The lobby is TINY. Like they just decided they wanted to expand the bar/sushi area so they can pack as many tables in there and leave no room for anyone to stand in the entrance. The hosts were very professional and friendly, doing their best, but you can tell they were stressed out. We were seated almost immediately at our table, but then the waiting began. Our server, Cynthia, was very attentive and apologetic, but it was a surprise to be sitting there without an ETA or end in sight. The table behind us got there maybe 20 min after us and complained, got their chef immediately. We waited a total of 1 hr and 10 min. That's a VERY long time for any customer to be kept waiting, and it was even harder for my daughter (who is 3 yrs old). Once our chef finally arrived he was FANTASTIC. I did not catch his name but honestly if it wasn't for him I would have left a 1 star review. He was skilled, entertaining, excellent with keeping our orders organized, and all the food was prepared perfectly. He really saved the night. Picture here for management - please give him a bonus for single-handedly saving the evening. I do not understand why management would allow for so many tables and reservations at such close intervals if there are not enough chefs to keep up. Based on other reviews on Yelp, this was not a singular event. Dining should be enjoyable, reservations should be honored. Instead of packing people in like sardines perhaps consider a revisit of your booking system. Lastly, you'd think managers would have basic customer service/hospitality skills: if you are running over an hour behind, offer your guests some consolation! There was nothing. No appetizer, drinks, desserts, etc.

We've been to the Benihana location in Hawaii, so we decided to try this location because of the free $30 birthday certificate. I signed up in Hawaii. I also am a member of the Friends with Benefits which comes with a bigger birthday certificate ($50). We planned to use it at one of the sister companies. We came as a party of four, and two other couples were seated with us. A person in both parties was also celebrating a birthday with the same coupon -- woohoo for November babies! (We're basically Valentine babies ). Remember to print out your birthday coupon! Service & Atmosphere Service was great from start to finish. The restaurant was packed on a Tuesday, so I'm glad my husband made a reservation ahead of time. Our chef was funny, engaging, and kept us entertained the whole time. He cooked everything perfectly and checked in to make sure we were happy with how things turned out. The servers were attentive. Food I ordered the Hibachi Supreme -- 8 oz tenderloin and lobster tail -- which comes as part of a 6-course meal. The onion soup came out room temperature, and another couple asked for theirs to be reheated. The 6 course comes with: onion soup, salad, shrimp, vegetables, mushrooms, steamed rice, Hot Green tea, and choice of ice cream (vanilla, sherbet or green tea). My middle son ordered the 5-course steak, and he enjoyed it -- steak was tender, and he liked the portion size. The difference between the 5 course and 6 course is you don't get dessert. My youngest ordered the kids' California Roll. I know I tried to push him to order an items that needed to be cooked. I found out that kids have a special membership. They get a free mug on their birthday with a purchase of the kids meal. My husband went with the Samurai Treat, and his meal came out great as well. We opted in to pay extra for the fried rice and enjoyed it. Drinks & Extras I ordered the Benihana Punch, and it was perfectly sweet -- not too strong, not too sugary. I choose to pay extra for the collectible mug, and I got to choose from three designs. When the meal was complete the staff came over to sing Happy Birthday (3 birthday celebrants). I chose matcha which I liked. We will probably come back to enjoy happy hour or the lunch specials. It was a bit pricey but I enjoyed it :). They also offer military discount. Thanks Benihana for the $30 birthday certificate!

Benihana - San Diego Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Benihana - San Diego

How long will they hold a reservation?

Honestly, even if you get a reservation at a certain time, you will have to wait 30-40 minutes to get seated. Another 30 minutes to get your chef and food. On weekends, reservations are highly recommended, as they will not take any walk-ins. Only… Read more

    What time does dinner start?

    I believe it is 4PM.

    Bar or standard?

They have a bar (for drinks and sushi) and dining areas for hibachi and other orders.

Is a standard table a teppan grill when booking on open table?

Oooh! i am not sure about that. I had called to make a reservation.

Has anyone gotten a response from "benihanalistens.smg.com/"? It's been a month and still NOTHING.…

Nope. I contacted them months ago, as did my husband in a separate message and neither of us ever received any sort of response. It's too bad because we used to go several times a year for celebrations, but we'll probably never go back.

Do they answer their phone ever?

If you're lucky, but don't even bother going even if they do answer.

What is the best way to make a reservation? I tried calling but there was no answer. Just an endless loop. Are walk-ins cool or maybe an online reservation system?

You can make reservations on Open Table

Is there a limit for reservation size?

No limit that I've been told.

I've been calling Benihana multiple times a day since Friday to get in touch with someone re: my reservation. Option 1 & 0 don't work. Just keeps ringing & ringing, can't lvm. HELP?

Same thing happened to me except with option 0 someone picked up the phone but no one was talking. I can just hear people in the background. Extremely frustrating!

    How is the parking?

No issues with parking. Didn't notice if they had valet but self park is more than enough.

Do they have the lunch special on weekends?

    No.

Question on the using the $30 birthday certificate. Your party has to order at least $30 worth of food and then the certificate will cover your $30 order? So basically buy one get one free.

Yes, it's more BoGo than free. As long as you order any adult entree, the next $30 will be free (can be another adult entree, sides, sushi rolls, or desserts).… Read more

Are the teppanyaki service available during covid or just right go?

Not when we were there three weeks ago.

Is the dining area open right now?

We were there last week and they had indoor dining only. They were spacing people out and there was quite a wait. I would have preferred outdoor dining. They are set up for that but they were not using it.

Is there yum yum sauce here?

If you're talking about the ginger and mustard sauces then yes there are two yum yum sauces there!

How is it eating at the bar?

Great. It is a fantastic experience.

What time is happy hour? Weekends?

Believe it ends at 630 and doesn't include weekends, Friday -Sunday

    Is there a bar?

Yes, there’s a bar and their happy hour is great!

How many people can their teppanyaki table seats?

The sushi was just okay but the other two items were great. Honestly my meal wasn't memorable I don't even remember what I ordered. Salad dressing isn't the ginger dressing I remembered and I didn't love it but I'm sure others do. That's a no for me dawg. The noodles were off and were in some sauce I didn't recognize by site or taste but the shrimp was perfectly cooked (that's a plus). Best friend ordered the wagyu and chicken or shrimp, she also wasn't impressed. Luckily we were full from the apps so we packed up our food and gave it to the kids. I should also mention that we weren't getting the interactive teppanyaki grill experience, just a regular table, but we knew that. We did get to see some of it since it was behind us. Everyone seemed to have a good time from what I could see. Service: our server must have been newish but was really nice and had a great attitude so that helped. Actually from what we could tell when we walked in, the staff were super friendly. We didn't get plates, chopsticks or silverware for our appetizers. We had to ask. Drink: As a diabetic I am super paranoid to order sodas because I've been given the wrong item so many times. I felt the meal would go great with a sugar free option, so that's what I ordered but not what I got. I triple confirmed that it must be sugar free. It in fact was not (eek). Our server felt terrible I could see it on his face and he apologized and quickly fixed it. I'm all honesty If I were to return, I'd probably order the apps and a beer and watch the teppanyaki show from a table with a view. Before I forget, it is LOUD so if you're going for a quiet intimate spot, maybe don't! Or if you're going to drown out the sound of a bad date or an in-law, please do. lol

When checking in be aware your whole party must be there to be seated and it is likely that you will end up next to another party as there are no separate tables. They have premium meats and know that it is NOT AYCE like some other shabu shabu places, so beware it will be a bit pricy depending on what you choose. You pick a broth, a rice, a noodle, a protein and you get a plate of veggies and sauces. You get an individual pot to mix your food to your liking. It is SO GOOD. I have never had a bad experience here. My go-to order is a mix of the tonktosu and spicy miso broth along with double wagyu shortrib and extra udon noodles. It's rich and filling and the veggies are fresh. I like to sub out certain veggies to get extra of others I like better (like mushrooms). I would eat here every single day if I could. If you don't finish your rice and broth they'll put it in a to-go container for you so you can have your "porridge" later. Drink menu is good too, they have rotating selection of drinks available, as well as sake, wine, and beer on tap.

Japanese hot pot? Ok…read more Driven by the place many many times and always assumed it was a ramen spot. We decided to give it a try after realizing it was hot pot. We walked in and just one other couple was dining. Happy hour from 5-6. Our waitress immediately explained how the menu worked and gave us cooking tips. I ordered the miso broth with pork and toro. We also had the chuck roll and brisket. The chuck roll and the pork were delicious. Would definitely skip the toro and brisket next time. The veggies they served were all great (mushrooms, emoji, bok choy, carrot, spinach, kabocha squash, with the exception of a bit too much cabbage). The experience can a little a bit of an endeavor if you've never done it solo, as you solely have to pay constant attention to the pot while trying to eat at the same time. It can be hard to hold a conversation when your food is boiling boiling hot! Definitely a laborous experience but a fun one!

Besthibachi is a regional chain with six locations in the LA area. Long tables and countertops were available for seating, however all of the customers who were present at the same time as my visit were doing takeout orders. The menu board was posted on a wall in the front left corner of the room next to the register. I asked the cashier if the place was open on weekends, and he said yes. Well, that was one star deducted from this review because when I showed up at 1:30 pm on a recent Sunday afternoon, the doors were locked, and no one was inside. The supposed hours of operation were from noon to midnight seven days a week. Combination plates and hibachi entrees made up the two menu columns. After reading some of the reviews, I decided to stay away from any seafood ingredient because the value was not there. I chose the New York Steak which was served with vegetables and rice. I asked for the meat to be cooked medium rare and for teriyaki sauce on the side. About 15 minutes later, a takeout container was handed to me inside a plastic bag. There was plenty of rice and veggies, but the amount of meat for the $20 price tag was on the low side. The steak was also overdone as it was closer to medium than medium rare. The quality at Besthibachi was not exactly the best so my rating was three stars minus one for the closure when they should have been open for business. The fact that my revelation surprised the cashier told me that something was disorganized with their scheduling.

We shared a plate and thank goodness we did because the portioning was great! The fried rice was delish. The NY strip was perfect and the yum yum sauce was great! I couldn't tell if it was the chicken or the veggies but something was a little salty, but overall it was delicious. I will definitely go back! Thanks for the great food!

The self-cooking process and tablet ordering service was explained clearly to us from the start. The meat quality here is exceptional. We ordered both the Family Wagyu Platter and the Family Prime Kobe Platter. While both were delicious, the Kobe was the absolute standout and so good that we ended up ordering a second platter of it. My nephew enjoyed his meal immensely. Unfortunately, the service didn't match the quality of the food and ruined the mood for our celebration. When the second half of our party arrived, there was a confusing mix-up, and the staff actually sent my 10-year-old nephew outside to wait on the sidewalk. To cap things off, they completely forgot the complimentary birthday dessert we were promised. The food is easily a 4/5, but because of the safety oversight with my nephew and the forgotten birthday treat, I'm giving this a 3-star rating. It's a great spot for the meat, but the hospitality needs a lot of work.

When our first waiter came by, he took our drink order and then it honestly seemed like he forgot about us. About 10 minutes later, another waitress came over asking for our drink order, and we let her know someone had already taken it but hadn't come back yet. We were seated at a hibachi table and most of us ordered the filet mignon medium. The steak itself was tasty, but there were SO many garlic pieces on top, it was honestly a lot of garlic. The fried rice was okay, nothing really special, just egg, rice, and butter. We all received vegetables except my brother-in-law, and unfortunately nobody noticed or fixed it. The restaurant also felt a little dark and cramped inside, especially once it got busier. What felt awkward though was that by around 4:30 PM, the manager came over and basically told us they needed the table because they had more reservations waiting. We were already finishing up eating, but it had only been about an hour since we sat down. For a party of 8 on Mother's Day, it just felt rushed since most places usually allow at least an hour and a half. Overall, the food was decent and the hibachi experience was still fun, but the service and feeling rushed at the end made the experience a little uncomfortable.
