Menu with rice stuck to the right upper area.
Michael M.

Having visited samurai sushi, one other time, with a good experience, we decided to give it another try. Our visit this time couldn't have been more different than our previous visit. We were greeted by an Asian man who spoke no words to us, I reminded him that I had a reservation, which he ignored, I asked if we could sit at the sushi bar and he tried to place us in two seats that were as far away from a sushi chef as possible, even though there were only two other patrons in total at the bar. When I objected, he tried to put us at a corner with a large structural vertical beam keeping us from you even seeing the sushi bar. When we objected again, he finally moved us to a seat in front of one of the sushi chefs. All of this without a spoken word and just an unpleasant look on his face. I have attached a photo of the menu we were handed, not so much to show the content, but to show the piece of rice or other food material stuck to the upper right hand corner. This was disgusting in our opinion. Our sushi chef was very attentive as was our server. The fish quality was moderate at best. None of it tasted fresh and was rather mushy in fact. We ordered one traditional roll and it was rolled very loosely to a point where it couldn't even be picked up with chopsticks without falling apart. We also order Nigiri and 2 hand rolls. All disappointing. The menu for sushi rolls is very limited. There are perhaps six rolls that are all have no imagination in anyway. The ambience of the sushi bar was typical and unremarkable. Overall, this is definitely not an establishment that I would recommend or that we will ever return to. It's striking how different are too experiences at this establishment were.

Went to Samurai to celebrate a special occasion. There were 8 of us so we opted for Teppanyaki (cooking in front of large grill). We made reservations by phone, and they were very courteous when we had to make several changes to our reservation. Upon arrival, we were seated right away in a semi-private room facing another Teppanyaki grill so both parties are face to face, the 2 chefs are cooking back to back. Even though we were in Teppanyaki room (separate from rest of restaurant), we were able to order sushi as appetizers. Servers were nice but overextended due to busy night. Our chef appeared wearing a mask. So it was difficult to hear him and his jokes/ comments/ explanations. The chef at opposite table wasn't wearing a mask and we found him more entertaining (so your experience varies depending on your chef). Nevertheless, our chef did a good job cooking. Main criticism was that he over seasoned the meats (very salty and peppery). I had to dip each piece in water before i could eat it. Each Teppanyaki meal comes with a miso soup and small salad to start. We were also given option of white rice or fried rice for additional charge. Portions were large so we had leftovers to take home.

Tried this place and we loved it !!! My wife Ate the California rolls so fast I only one lol the filet mignon was so tender and delicious it was the best !!! Also the service was nice they helped with what steaks to get, also quick with bringing food cause we were starving!! This place is nice inside with music and smelled good when you walk in.!

This place has been a solid sushi experience for us for 20 years. Been going here more recently and it's still as good as we remembered. Be careful when crafting your own rolls here though, we thought we made a pretty basic salmon roll with crab and it was personally priced for $42...for one roll...oops. Maybe will stick with the menu items next time. Very fresh and tasty though!

Great food! The restaurant is very nice and well put together. I like it! The sushi was delicious. My friends and I got a bottle of hot sake and nigori which were both good. We got spicy edamame that was good. I got the Philadelphia roll, I added cucumber into it. Definitely tasted amazing. The service was great, the waiter was friendly and helpful.

Chirashi Bowl A (not on the menu) $49

Did not have a reservation on the Friday before Christmas (they were really busy) and they were able to seat us at the sushi bar. They only gave us a menu for appetizers and sushi, so I'm assuming you can only order those things when you sit at the bar. We didn't get a chance to see any of the hot food items on their regular menu. Other than that, the food was delicious as always and they even gave us complimentary edamame and sliced fruit if you sit at the bar.

We made a reservation ahead of time a came 10 minutes early and got our table and the man at the front desk was very personable while pointing out our table. We are glad we made reservations as the restaurant was busy. The food was delicious. We ordered four sushi dishes and chicken teriyaki and the four of us split the dishes and everyone enjoyed what they ate, and the food was all finished. And that's the good news. The service at the table was way, way below good. Water and tea were ordered and nobody ever came back to see if we wanted more and it was hard to catch anyone's eye to try to get more until we finally said we'd skip it because we had tickets to a play and needed to leave, at which time we were able to get the bill. When looking at the bill there was an extra "service charge" added, whatever that is. The restaurant is in a nice strip mall and is really comfortable and nice inside, which adds to the charm. With better service I would have given it a 5 star rating.

Tuna Roll

Menu items are distinctive from other Japanese restaurants. We ordered Family Combination of Sashimi and Chicken Teriyaki, Samurai Dynamite and Tuna Roll. Sauce for dynamite is sweeter than other dynamite I've had before.

The Boat! 2X combo of chicken and steak with tempura.

The beachfront views are beautiful and the whole place has a fun, relaxed Del Mar Vibe. We ordered a few different things and definitely had some standouts. The grilled prawns were our favorite, followed by the sashimi, and surprisingly Ques'ts fish + chips made our top 3! We went over Labor Day weekend and were still able to get a reservation pretty easily. Parking int he area was a bit difficult to find, but that was probably to be expected for a holiday weekend (there is public parking on the street + parking lot across the street). We ended up using valet, which was only $2 and made things easier. One of my favorite parts was being able to walk right down to the beach after we finished eating and spend a little time by the water. Such a nice way to end the meal. Overall, great food, amazing views and a really enjoyable experience. Definitely a spot we'd come back to when in Del Mar.

They honored our request when we arrived to be by a window to be able to enjoy the view although it was already getting dark by that point, so it wasn't bright enough to really enjoy it but I'm sure it is a gorgeous location if we had been able to get in a little earlier! We had the grilled prawns appetizer which was so delicious but which also then surprised me with how bad my meal was after having such a great app. My husband's burger was fine and he enjoyed it, but the pan roasted chicken I ordered was just very bland. I'm not very picky but there was no seasoning on it at all, just a plain pan sauce made from the juices of very plain chicken. It was originally plated nicely before I took the photo I included, but I had cut into it to make sure it was cooked thoroughly before I tried it since it was very thick and it was cooked fine, just not seasoned with anything that I could taste or see visually. I had to ask for salt and pepper to add to it and our waitress never came to ask how our food was once we got it, so I had to wait for someone else passing by to ask for that. It wasn't too bad to eat but just not very enjoyable so I didn't eat most of it, and when our waitress came back to finally give us our check and I declined a to-go box for it she still never asked how everything was, so we didn't complain or bring it up. For such a good location and how good the app was, I would still recommend them just maybe not that dish!

One, a waiter dropped a whole soup on my Goddaughter's mom's back & hair & dress, yes he said he was sorry but could have meant it a bit more.. Luckily my friend didn't say nothing was calm got up went to the bathroom with friends to clean up came back & just said, this sucks I just had my hair done. The waiter could have offer a free drink or appetizer at least. Then when the bill came & we paid we noticed all our checks were wrong some of us paid for other people's items. They didn't know how to fix it so we just fixed it ourselves by paying each other on Venmo what ever we owed each other. It was an inconvenience, food was good tho & spot very nice & loved the burger but not sure I'll come back because it is a bit pricey & just expected a bit more customer service wise.

This was my wife and I's second visit since the change in ownership, and the first time we forgave them thinking they would get it together. But we did wait a couple of years before we came back. So I made a reservation on a Saturday evening at 6 and we arrived on time. The table we were offered was a very small 2 seat right at the host podium, on the patio. Looked pretty quiet so I was a little disappointed, but ok. So the evening starts ok, we get our drink order in and an app. Just after our wine came they said sorry, can we take your table? They were rearranging for a large group expected later. So we held everything in our hands or laps while they dragged our table away. Good news is they brought a slightly larger one. Ok, still hanging in there. But now for the next 20 minutes they are dragging solar heaters around, moving tables, and in the process, ignoring us because they have all this to do. But our dinner eventually comes and the rearranging is done, but the large party starts to arrive. Turns out, of course, our server was their server. So things slowed WAY down for us but we did get a dessert order in, which was to be accompanied by a glass of port we were to share. After 10 minutes the dessert came and the server clarified with us we only wanted one glass. Affirmed. They disappear for 20 minutes to serve the big group. So our dessert included ice cream, it's starting to melt, we are trying to hang on...and after all this time our server comes over to tell us they are out of port. Now we're 30 minutes plus after ordering, that's pretty bad. So now we eat our dessert, really not enjoying it because of the service. Finally, waiting for our check, the owner comes over. It's been almost an hour since our dessert order. He apologizes profusely that there was a misunderstanding...they do have port...then with a flourish he produces a glass and says it's on the house. We would have sent it back but I think we were a little shocked at unaware he was Tone deaf to the situation. Three hours. $350. Miserable experience. Goodbye Sbicca, we miss the old.

The farm-raised British Columbia salmon ($41), was moist, with citrus-pomegranate beurre blanc sauce, with potato puree and overcooked, bland vegetables. Our favorite was the wild-caught Maine lobster ($53): two moist, tasty 4 oz lobster tails, baby Yukon gold potatoes, drawn butter, and a creamy lobster-mushroom sauce, plus crisp, fresh vegetables, unlike the other order. The excellent food and outdoor setting were diminished by bad service. We had a good view of the clock on the lifeguard tower so were aware of the time. Carne assda was three dollars extra or if I wanted all three meats it was five dollars extra. I probably should've not done this, but I paid for all three. I walked around while I waited. After seeing everything in the entire place, I took a seat near the Pick-up counter. While I was waiting there, the guy who was cooking was complaining about so many things. The one thing that really was upsetting is he said something along the lines of "people have to wait for their food anyways." this guy is angry and bitter, and does not like his job. The wait was oddly long I was tempted to ask them to cancel my order but I waited. The Third employee handing me my food with a smile in a box no bag no napkins no nothing. The icing on the cake is paid for three meat definitely there's no bacon in here and I think I found one piece of Carne Asada so I paid five dollars extra basically for a chorizo burrito . There's hardly anything inside of it. I taste more tortilla than the inside. This was the most disappointing burrito. I think I've ever had in my life. I should've gone to the taco shop and gotten a much better burrito. Shame on you, Ranch 45. I don't have the energy to call you or go back and why waste my time and money coming back to complain.
