It had been YEARS since my husband and I had been to Benihana. In the past, it just never felt like the hype matched the quality, and we found other hibachi spots we liked more. But I had a birthday voucher and a gift card, so we thought, why not give it another try. And wow. I feel like I have been missing out. The experience was so much fun. Our chef was fantastic and made the whole night feel special. It honestly felt like the perfect way to celebrate turning 38. And yes, at one point I was jokingly called out as "toxic", and to be clear, that was directed at me. All in fun! We ordered the steak/shrimp combo, which came with a shrimp appetizer and white rice. Of course we upgraded to fried rice, which feels like a must. Everything was really good and the chef did not cut corners at all, which we appreciated. My only callout is the cost. Even with the coupon and a $25 gift card, we still show how spent over $110 for two meals and one drink. I was honestly shocked. Compared to other places, it is definitely more expensive. Gratuity is automatically added. That said, the service truly was fantastic, so in this case it felt deserved. Even with the higher price, I would still go back. Food was slightly undercooked and got a belly ache as I was leaving. Ordered the steak. The rating was off because of where I was seated. We had a family there that was so incredibly oblivious and made comments to the cook that he should cry because he received a tip like their cook in Bali did. They lacked so much social awareness that I had come tact embarrassment for them. So awkward - with big families like that, maybe seat them alone at a table. The chef, Aaron, was amazing! He was funny and put on a great show. The menu has changed significantly since I've last been to Benihana. It seems they've doubled the price of meals and aren't offering anything additional. In fact, they removed a lot of options from the menu and no longer provide the hibachi fried rice into your price. It's $8 extra to add fried rice!! Something that used to be included. That is criminal. The food quality also has gone down. The food was drastically under seasoned. Even my 8 year old niece said her corn needed salt. Honestly I will never go back to Benihana. It's a scam. It's been a long time since the last time we had Benihana, and the experience was great! We sat at a hibachi table, so the food was super hot and fresh. I appreciate Benihana for sending a belated birthday certificate after I didn't claim it on time. The day that I went, it was my husband and I were seated with an older couple, who were also celebrating a birthday. Despite the lame vibe at our table, our waitress was very attentive to our needs with refills. She was professional and maintained that energetic energy. Our chef was also very entertaining and tried to make jokes despite the low energy at our table. The food was delicious as always. (We come here twice a year.) They also had a staff member, a younger guy, who went around to collect empty cups, bowls, and plates. Also... when we arrived for this one, they had a new loyalty program, which, for me, was complicated to access. The website had me log in multiple times. I wrote an extensive review for Benihana two and a half years ago. The major negative I talked about was the bad service, which was really awful. On the other hand, I said that no one really complains about price. That was 2.5 years ago. On the plus side, the service has improved tremendously. The waitress came around often to fill pop, water, and tea. Dirty dishes were removed promptly, and the salad and soup were served quickly after ordering. I thought our waitress was cheerful and helpful. There must have been a concerted effort to improve staff hiring and training. Kudo's to the service staff. On the negative side, Benihana is getting really expensive. In my review 2.5 years ago, I mentioned that fried rice upgrade was $6.10. Now it's $8.00 per person. In the prior review I said that the cost for two people WITH the $30 birthday discount was $75.18. Now the price for two people WITH the $30 birthday coupon (same exact items ordered) was $94.54. We went out to celebrate my husband passing a certification for work. 8 of us in total all on the same bill, to say the least this was not a cheap dinner. We ordered our food and my husband asked if he could get extra veggies instead of rice because He is diabetic. We were told that management needed to be asked permission to do this. When the waitress came back she said that they can't do this. This was really disappointing that this accommodation could not be met especially because of my husband's dietary restriction and the fact that are bill would be in the hundreds of dollars. Somewhat disappointing - 3 stars. Benihana Maple Grove was the latest stop in my on-going adventure to try every sushi joint in the Twin Cities. Unfortunately, my sushi was pretty lame. The sushi was a lack luster, disappointing experience. I feel that Benihana just phones in their sushi rolls, they hardly put any effort into them and they don't even try. They don't offer many varieties either. My rolls were mostly rice, they were asymmetrical & sloppy & not even round. Some slices of my first roll had hardly any ingredients on the inside, and two of the rolls (I think) didn't have anything on the inside at all and the ingredients were simply piled on top. Last but not least, the flavors were sub-par. I couldn't even finish my 3 rolls. In summary, I think the sushi at Benihana is only 2 stars. On the positive side, the restaurant is large and beautiful. Everything seems to be very clean. And the customer service was excellent. Shout out to Daria, the service at the bar was awesome. I have a feeling that the main thing at Benihana, the place where they shine, is probably the hibachi side of the business. But the sushi? No, thanks. I'll pass. HORRIBLE!! Boy this place has changed - for the worse. It was a special birthday dinner for 6 of us. We had a reservation on a Sunday night and was not seated until 15 mins after our reservation time. The waitress was OK, although she had to confirm things 4 and 5 times. She dropped a glass and a bowl and just appeared off. It took forever to get the cook to the table. He was Mexican with a thick accent and we all had a hard time understanding him. I was expecing someone matching the type of food we were eating. Regardless, he overcooked everything. My filet mignon was ordered medium rare to rare. It was cooked well done. The other steaks at the table were also all well done. The chicken was dry and so was one of the salmon dinners. We didn't make a big deal about it because we didn't want to ruin the birthday celebration but the one salmon dinner was unedible. The manager gave us $15 off the total bill!! Like, WTF? a $50 meal item and the protein part was completely unedible and he gave $15 off???? And barely apologized for it. Oh I forgot to mention they tack on a 20% "fee" that is not really a tip but more "compensation" for the cook, buss person, bartender and waitress and you are expected to provide an additional tip. Our dinner for 6 cost $550. What a waste! Save your money. This place used to be a great place to have a wonderful dinner and a "show" but was total garbage for this special occasion. Update for celebrating my Birthday today. It's been several years since we dined at Benihana for a birthday. We had an awesome experience highlighted by our chef Aaron Sosa. He was entertaining and very energetic when he was cooking and making sure we were pleased with our food. From 2017 We came to celebrate my wife's Birthday and had a wonderful time. If you're looking for a little entertainment while eating your dinner, then this is the perfect place to go. It's especially a great place to celebrate a birthday or anniversary. Our chef Hector was very fun to watch and he cooked our food exactly the way we like it. We remember Hector from a previous visit we enjoyed. Benihana is a great place to enjoy some dinner theater and people watch. We had a whole table of bikers behind us and I sorta wished I was sitting with them. Our table consisted of two single moms with their kids, plus our little party of 3. Most of the night we were all barking at our kids to behave. The only good part was the soy sauce and the sweet sauce and they don't make those.. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. My first time in a Benihana and wasn't impressed . I was on a first date and my guy wanted to impress me, lol. The chef came to our table at almost 9pm, by the time he was done cooking all our meals it was almost 10pm, I was tired, grumpy, hungry and angry lol and food was cold for some of us because it's made in batches.He forgot to make one girls noodle dish who had her hibachi meats and veggies already cold, she ate two spoons of her food and took the rest home, she had brought her bf on a birthday treat so that wasn't the best experience for them. I noticed also it's like they wait till the table is full before a chef comes over, so the third family that joined us came in an hour after us and their food actually was made sooner than us two other families who came earlier, so it's not first come first serve, it's like they make the white meats and see food first then red meats later. I ordered steak and shrimp hibachi, they give you only 3 shrimp and steak was really a small portion. . I won't recommend it for a first date or if you are too hungry and have to wait that long . Sadly out of all the hibachi restaurants I've tried Benihana is probably near the bottom of the list.
