We had a reservation but there was no waiter assigned to our table; eventually a manager filled in, but we ended up begging waiters at adjacent tables to help us with drinks and silverware (which they were too busy to do), bussing our own dishes to the table behind us, and getting our own boxes when we finished our meal. When we spoke to a manager we were told a server had called out. If this is the result of one call out, their schedule needs to be seriously re-evaluated. We used a birthday certificate that we received by e-mail - it was for $30 off after spending $30 for dinner Monday-Thursday. There are a few restrictions on the the certificate, so be sure to read the conditions. We made a reservation on a Monday and were seated within a few minutes of arrival. Our chef did a few showy things, but nothing too over the top. The meals here are a little pricey. so the $30 off really helps. We ordered the Surfside and the Hibachi Steak. They were out of calamari but asked if we wanted to substitute in shrimp for the calamari (no big deal). The food was good and everything cooked just right. Wow! I've been to many Benihana restaurants since it's a chain and this one is surely my most favorite to date! The line to dine is superbly long here and I can see why! Service is top notch and the entertainment, they make it more than the standard - special to say the least. Our chef did the norm of presentation, usual onion teepee, egg toss, and then some! That reservation shall be honored. If not, you will not get my business. We went next door to Fuddruckers and had a much better time. No wait time. Seated right away and had a fantastic meal. This place has fallen off. My food was straight garbage. My steak looked like dog food. I ordered medium and it looked liked it was cooked yesterday. My server didn't care at all. I asked multiple times if she was sure it was cooked to medium and she kept saying yes. I just sent back to the kitchen she she still charged me for a $9 cup of rice I didn't eat. You would expect for a place at this price point there would be some sort of service expectation. Almost every chair in this place needed to be reupholstered. Upon arrival, I encountered a young Hispanic woman at the front who did not demonstrate exemplary customer service; it may be that her skills are better suited to another role. We arrived 5 minutes early, but instead of being greeted with hospitality, we waited over an hour past our reservation before being seated. During that time, no one checked in, no updates were provided, and when I finally asked, the excuse was that they were "short staffed." That might have been believable--except I watched waiters standing around, some even flirting or on their phones, while multiple tables sat completely empty. The moment I pressed a second time, a table suddenly appeared. Interesting. Once seated, things only got worse. Other families with kids were given children's menus right away. We had two little ones with us, but none were provided. When I went to the host stand to ask, I was met with an attitude as if I were inconveniencing them. From there, servers continued to walk by without so much as making eye contact. No water. No acknowledgement. Nothing. A family seated after us was served immediately while we sat ignored. Only when I reminded the staff again did a manager overhear and step in. He was professional, apologetic, and took our order personally. But even after that intervention, 30 minutes later, we still had no drinks or food. At that point, the kids were restless, the table was frustrated, and the birthday mood was completely ruined. We canceled our meal and walked next door to Puesto, where we had drinks and appetizers within 15 minutes. To the manager's credit, he tried damage control and gave me his card, saying he'd "take care of us next time." But honestly--what about this time? This was supposed to be a special family celebration, and instead, it was an exercise in patience, neglect, and poor customer service. This was not a case of a restaurant overwhelmed on a busy night--it was a case of avoidable negligence. From the failure to honor a reservation, to the absence of basic communication, to the unprofessional conduct of staff in plain view of guests, the experience reflected systemic problems in training, accountability, and guest prioritization. For a brand like Benihana, which markets itself as a destination for special occasions, this level of service is unacceptable. The mishandling of our family's birthday dinner (this was unacceptable, birthday dinner or not) demonstrates a lack of respect for guests' time and experience, and ultimately drove our party to take our business elsewhere. BUT NOW - Excellent service, superb Staff, and the manager (Buddy) is truly making sure everything runs smoothly. I am very impressed with the turnaround. If I could give this location zero stars, I would. I came in for lunch with my 3-year-old daughter and chose the Power Lunch option, which promises your meal within 45 minutes or it's free. Unfortunately, the staff were so focused on beating the clock that they completely forgot about basic customer service. We were rushed from the moment we sat down. Our order was taken quickly, but that was the end of any attention. No one checked on us, no water was provided, and we never received the soup or salad that was supposed to come with our meal. Staff were openly arguing in front of customers about table assignments--unprofessional and uncomfortable. When we asked to order something else, we were told we couldn't because it might delay service and they didn't want to be penalized for running late. I understand efficiency, but not at the expense of hospitality. The only positive was the cook, who made sure my daughter's meat was well done--thoughtful and appreciated. But one kind gesture from the kitchen doesn't make up for the disorganized and dismissive front-of-house service. I have to write a review about our experience last night but I'm giving 5 stars because the waitress was good and I don't want this to impact her negatively. We were the last party to be seated at 9:15pm (open until 10pm), we had to wait far too long for the appetizer roll and spicey edamame. There were three other full tables with chefs cooking and providing good shows. Our chef was literally cooking in slow motion once he FINALLY arrived, the meat was done but vegetables were still very hard, and everything lacked seasoning. My server was so rude. She was for some reason kind to her other tables but seemed annoyed anytime she would come to ours. I had to remind her about our drinks as we were half way done with our meal and never received them. I had to remind her of several things. I asked politely for anything I needed and she just seemed annoyed like I was bothering her. Spicy Tofu steak 5 course meal for around 30$ The green tea is always a like warm... kinda gross Service is usually hit and miss... recently it was decent she actually was on top of it and attentive. The place itself is not what I remember it as. It's gross, ghetto and run down and a bit smelly. Sometimes it's fun I guess with a large group but in hindsight it's really NOT worth the price. Do not leave your phone behind at Benihana Concord Ca you come back a second later looking for your phone and it's no wear to be found. The busboys are cleaning the area and state they have not seen a phone, you ask the reception area no phone, they ask the waitress no phone as you leave you state i will look at "Find My Phone" to see the location of my phone. After I leave my son calls my husband stating Benihana called and found your phone outside. I was almost home had to turn around to go back to Benihana to get my phone that has major screen damage that should not occurred if I had dropped my phone outside. I just had my worst experience at this Benihana yet. I'm so disappointed. My family has been coming to Benihana (SF and then Concord) two to three times a year for about 35 years (except for the pandemic). It's our go-to for birthday celebrations. My son and I have kept up the tradition. We came here tonight for my birthday celebration. I ordered my usual mojito. The server brought me a drink with pineapple juice. I explained to her that it wasn't a mojito, so she took it back and brought me what was supposed to be a mojito, but it tasted like plain lemonade. I decided to not complain and just drink it even though there was no alcohol. Appetizer was good, ordered my usual Crispy Rice with Spicy Salmon. It was delicious. We ordered our meals and the chef came out to cook. He must've been new cause his cooking style was extremely sloppy. I was determined to enjoy myself so I just sat back and watched everything. The point in the meal where they make the volcano with onions, he did something wrong because the onions burst into flames and exploded across the table. Like fire on two sides of the table. Maybe it's because the onions looked old (waterlogged), or he used too much oil. But we had to jump back cause if the burning onions that flew to our side of the table. Our meals were flavorful, the spicy shrimp was delicious. The highlight of the meal. Our server came out and sang to the other birthday person at the table, and I sang along to them as well. The server came back 10 minutes later, handed me a bowl of cream with a candle and said "happy birthday." Then she walked off. Finally, she brings out the check and I was overcharged. I pointed out that she charged me for the wrong drink, and for someone else's meal. I also told her that the drink she gave me wasn't a mojito, but lemonade. I've been ordering mojitos at Benihana's for 10 years, they have alcohol and don't taste like lemonade. So I basically got cheated out of $16. We had to wait an additional 10 minutes after the other people at the table left for the bill because she had problems taking off the extra charge. She had no problems with their bill. I seriously contemplated not giving her a tip, I've never not left a tip. I typically tip people 20-30%, but not this time. She got a tip, but not like usual. I'm so disappointed. The place was not crowded and there were plenty of servers. There was no reason for this poor service. We've been coming to the Concord location for years and this is our second bad experience here. Okay so 2 stars because our server Landen was AMAZING and our order was delicious. but 2 stars because of the host. I don't know why but she just seemed like she was not having a good night. No smiles, not friendly, just seemed super annoyed from the start. She told us to pick any table in the lounge so we walked up to a table but once at it we saw it just needed to be wiped down. I asked her if we could have that table and that we didn't mind waiting for it.... The way that the Host looked at me was so crazy. She literally looked like her eyes were about to pop out her head. So my friend just said "let's just sit here at this table" a different table. which was fine i guess, but the host definitely did not make us feel comfortable. During our dinner one of my friends went to use the restroom near the host stand, as she's walking by there's a group of employees at the host stand including a manager it looked like. my friend walks by them to go to the restroom and all these employees are staring at her so she smiles back and she hears one of the employees say "do you guys know her?" referring to my friend. Like huh??? you are literally at work and a guest is passing by and they "do you know her" i don't know if it was genuine or made to be funny but that's just such a weird thing to say. We all managed to laugh off these events, my friends and i work in the service industry so we understand completely. but as a guest this evening someone else might not find their behavior funny. It's been a hot minute since I went to a Benny's. This location is tucked away in the back of an outdoor mall with other eateries and a Krispy Kreme. Its an older building, but always seem to be busy whenever I pass by. Inside is dark and noisy, but very typical of any other Benihana. Ordered up a combo of steak and shrimp, but some fried rice. Noticed my neighbors also ordered similar. The real reason you come here is for the show and to celebrate something. This probably will not be a random Wednesday night dinner. Our chef/artist was amazing, with all the tricks of the trade you expect from Ben. The onion volcano, the heart egg whites, the egg shells inside the hat. It sounds corny, but pretty cool when you actually see it for youself, especially when there's some Sapporo inside of you. Food was decent. Not the best, but very decent. Flavors are spot on.
