I'm honestly torn between never going back to Benihana again--or just never going back on Mother's Day. I made a reservation a week in advance for 4:45 PM for four people (two adults and two children), but we ended up waiting nearly an hour to be seated. When we were finally called, they squeezed all four of us into just two seats at the end of a table, where neither child had proper access to the cooking surface. It was a frustrating experience, especially seeing other families around us properly seated with full accommodations. To be clear, the food was great and our chef was fantastic--I still left a tip out of respect for the staff working hard under difficult circumstances. But overall, this felt like the best worst experience I could've had while trying to celebrate my wife on Mother's Day. Benihana really needs to rethink how they manage reservations during peak holidays. Either honor booked times more reliably or limit how many reservations are taken to avoid overbooking and poor seating arrangements. read more

I had not been to a Benihana is YEARS! We don't have one near our house. We were in the area shopping and decided to stop in. So glad we did! There is a large parking lot in front and in back. Easy access to the freeway in Concord. The restaurant has been refreshed and brightened since I've been here. So we came at a totally off time - around 2:30 - and were delighted to have a whole cooktop area just to ourselves! They serve lunch until 3:00 and offer great rates on the earlier dining. We were stuffed!! The cocktails are 10/10 and the food is 10/10 too. Get the teriyaki steak! YUM. The hostess was SO lovely. Our waiter was kind and cheerful and our chef was excellent too. Fell off. Went there for an annual family birthday tradition. This was the last time. Food was horrible, fried rice dry even with extra garlic butter. Service was below par. The server kept forgetting everything we asked for. I know a lot of these places are under staffed and so I always give servers some compassion but this was hard to do this day. I had a reservation for my sons 8th birthday for 6pm. At 5:46pm we received a text from Benihana saying our table was ready. We went and told them we received this text saying our table was ready and were informed by the hostess very rudely that the text didn't come from them and had nothing to do with them it was AI driven. I was confused and attempted to show the text when hostess stated I didn't call your name your table is not ready you need to wait. Okay no problem, I understand sometimes you may need to wait a few minutes with a reservation. We checked multiple times until our table was finally ready at 6:40pm. Once sat at the table it wasn't until 7:05pm we received fountain drinks and water. We didn't receive soup or salad until 7:20pm. All of our meals came with white rice and all but one meal added chicken fried rice. We were told all meals would still come with white rice. The white rice never came and when we asked for it (practically done with meal) was informed they were all out and trying to make more. My daughter will only eat white rice so that was a major bummer for her. Then once dessert came we were told that the vanilla ice cream we had ordered was not available. We spent almost $400 for an awful dining experience. Thank goodness my son enjoyed our chef William who was amazing. I feel like this put a major damper on his birthday. This five star review is for Chef Omar. We've been to Benihana multiple times but our last visit we had him and he was simply the best. Before all the food was consistently good but he took it beyond. He's a damn good chef! I noticed the way he cooked the zucchini was a little different from the other guys. He's slathered the butter and seasonings right in the zucchini before grilling them. All of the proteins came out perfectly. He showed us new tricks with the fried rice. I noticed when he drew the egg drawing he outlined it with oil first. The other cooks didn't do that. He really is a superior chef! Upon arrival my large plate wasn't fully cleaned. We asked the server for a new one. But after several back and forth between taking drink orders, delivering appetizers, she still forgot or wasn't able to get to that yet. Omar noticed immediately when he entered his station and grabbed a new clean plate for me asap (right before the server came back with one). So he delivered excellent customer service on top of being an amazing cook! Is it possible to tell them to give Omar a raise? Or maybe next time we make a reservation I'll try to request him. Chef Ernesto kept us entertained with his skillet/performance as he cooked up our dinner. Most of our group ordered the seafood Diablo special as the spicy sauce is to die for and really brings the heat! I got a seafood trio that included calamari, shrimp, and scallops, the perfect seafood combo! We Ofcourse upgraded our meals to get the chicken fried rice starter as it's so buttery and yummy. February 28th is my husband's birthday. Our lovely daughter usually takes us out every year. Last year, 2025, we celebrated at Benihana in Walnut Creek. We were a party of eight, five adults and three quiet but very hungry children. We received our menus right away decided what we wanted to eat and waited, and waited. Our drinks came in 1/2 hour after begging twice. Our server didn't show up AT ALL! They kept making excuses saying he was stuck in traffic. Not our problem!!! Everyone around us ate and left, meanwhile the children were getting cranky. After 1 1/2 hours and more complaining they finally got a different waiter to serve us. He left out all the sauces, the garlic butter for the rice, and most of the food was cold because they refused to turn down the air conditioner that was blowing full blast on us in February. When we asked for the missing sauces they said they had no such things, although all the other tables had them. My daughter who is a General Manager at a restaurant herself kindly talked to the manager and explained what had happened and he blew it off. We had a $700+ bill and left the mandatory tip for a party of eight. Benihana had always been a family fun restaurant that we had been going to since the 90's, but in San Jose, never again in Walnut Creek. Please find another town to visit this lovely establishment because the management and staff only care about the bottom line and NOT customer service! read more

They offered the Taste of Benihana menu ($39.00) in the bar, which was an excellent option. Our waitress, Tiffany, provided outstanding service--she was attentive, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable about the menu. It was our first time visiting the Concord location. The restaurant is bright and was buzzing with people when we arrived. We were seated promptly after checking in for our reservation. The staff here is super friendly but there is an opportunity for management to adjust their staffing. In some areas, there were servers folding napkins and other sections where the staff were running around trying to ensure their tables were tended to. I don't blame the staff. They were doing the best they could. Our drinks room 20 minutes and it was just beer and wine. Our chef wasn't available so we sat for over an hour. The only thing that really hurts was the bathroom first stall, I was locked in for 2 mins until a sweet Filipina walked in and kicked it open for me. Last night we went to Benihana for my birthday. We arrived 30 minutes early and were sat immediately. Awesome! This never happens! So we sat and our waiter seemed to be new so we were patient. He messed up on our drink order. Okay, no problem easy fix. I asked for a cranberry mojito, he said they were out of them so I got an iced tea. Another table was being sat and 3 of them ordered cranberry mojitos and received them. Kinda pissed, it's my birthday, besides the fried rice the cranberry mojito is what I came here for, you know December and all. Salads were brought out and we had to ask for forks. The chef comes out, his name is Devon. He is courteous and starts the show. Ok. So he starts the rice it's looking good and smelling kinda what it should. The chicken went on at the same time. Then he started the steaks. No sign of shrimp, which is the appetizer. He went to cut the chicken and I was hoping the knives he was using were dull. Turns out the chicken was cooked way too long and my 4 year old couldn't even chew it. Steaks were cooked close to what we asked. When we got the rice it was missing something. Wasn't as good as it usually is. I think he realized at the end that the shrimp were still on the cart, they were last cooked. I wasn't impressed after having such great experiences recently. Tbh. F this place. We have been coming here for 28 years, 28 YEARS! We only come here on special occasions, so at least 3 to 4 times a year. The last 4 times have been ATROCIOUS. We reserve the table 2 to 3 weeks ahead of time and wait an HOUR for a table at least. The last time we came here (tonight) they sat us at an overcrowded table when they had 4 other tables ready that I saw. They didnt even have a place settings for us and had to bring in more chairs. Zero elbow room for a dinner that cost over $300 for the family is absolutely ridiculous. When we complained to management we were told to "calm down" and they didnt even try to make it right. We walked out. F this place. It's gone absolutely downhill. And for the price range that these meals cost we would expect to be treated much better since we are customers. We will be taking our business elsewhere from now on and i suggest you do the same. Benihana concord is absolute trash. Also, don't leave anything in your car. Lunch specials especially the lunch duet gets you a good price on 2 items . So more bang for your buck and great show . Reservations are recommended but not needed . Started off with the watermelon fish bowl. This set the mood . Beef julienne and scallops was my choice along with chicken fried rice x2 ( appetizer with one ) IYKYK. Garlic buttered down on everything ‼ Salad pre meal always good ginger dressing included . Veggies with the meal is also a treat so fresh . My girlfriend and I made a reservation for 7:30 p.m. (Saturday, January 31). We checked in about 2-5 minutes before the reservation time and were told we'd be seated shortly. We gave up just past 8:10 p.m. We overheard the manager/host tell waiting customers that checked in after us that there was a 45 minutes before the delay on reservations, yet every time we inquired about when we would be seated, he'd reply something along the lines of coming up next or soon. We overheard customers complaining about 40+ minutes waiting for the chef to come after soup or salad was served and still hadn't come yet. We also overheard some things about reservations that were around an hour late that were being waited on, and customers who were walk-ins that were getting priority over reservations. I should be FAR more upset tha I already am. This is absolutely unacceptable, not to mention we drove all the way from Sacramento to celebrate our anniversary at the Concord Benihana, which is the nearest to our home. We absolutely love Benihana and used to go all the time when we had one in Citrus Heights. We've been to others in the Bay, as well as in Phoenix a couple years ago during a friend's wedding. I placed an online curbside order and my receipt said food would be ready at 7pm. I arrived at 7:05 and clicked the "Im Here" on my email confirmation and it then says someone will be out shortly. 7:20 I call and the rep said he notified the team and someone would be out. It's now 7:30 and I park, go inside to the Togo section and the girl said she was putting my order in and to give it another 10-15 mins because she was by herself and they were busy. I told her I did all the online prompts and automated system that kept saying would be out and the girl said those online prompts for Benihana don't get sent to her and she didn't know I was outside until I walked inside. I left outside waited some more and went back inside at 7:45 and my food was ready. I feel bad for the young girl working alone as she definitely needed some help. Ruined my christmas dinner. Had reservations at 6:45. I had very little to eat all day, expecting to have a nice big dinner. When we came to check in, we were told they were behind 45 minutes. Isn't this why people make reservations, to avoid a wait?! Deciding to stay was a terrible idea. At 7:30, I checked what was happening and they seemed confused and completely disorganized. We ultimately decided to leave without eating. Waiting that long without even beginning the main course is unacceptable, especially at a hibachi restaurant where timing and coordination are essential. I was glad that Benihana was open on Christmas Day and taking reservations, but upon arrival for my 6pm reservation the lobby was overcrowded with people standing shoulder to shoulder waiting to be seated. I felt sympathy for the staff doing the best they can, but clearly the reservations were overbooked. They also didn't have an efficient way of calling people's names to be seated. You could barely hear them. Please implement either a texting system to notify people when their table is ready, or a tablet near check in with a list of names ready or next for seating for us to see. At 6pm they were just starting to seat 5pm reservations. With a 6pm reservation, we didn't get taken to our table until 6:45, and didn't get to eat any food until 7:15. I skipped lunch in preparation for a big early dinner, so I was very hungry. The food itself was delicious and our chef was great, which is why I'm giving more than 1 star. Our server made a mistake and I didn't get the fried rice I ordered. He also knocked over a nearly full drink all over a kid sitting at our table. Just celebrated my son's 11th birthday here for a party of 8. Yes, it is pricey. But really for the chef entertainment and portions it is worth it. Thankfully we had reservations because it was PACKED. Even with reservations, we waited 10 minutes to be seated and there was a lag between seating, ordering and the arrival of food, around an hour after our reservations we were finally eating. We were ok, though, because our kids are a little older. It would be more challenging with toddlers/young kids. We loved our chef. He was such a pro and even my unimpressionable husband agreed the show takes a lot of preparation. My son LOVED his birthday dinner. He felt so special with the dessert, song and attention. Made a reservation for Father's Day at 5:30 and we were sat right on time regardless of how busy it was. This place does a great job at keeping up with wait times. Our server Marium was so sweet and hospitable, and our hibachi chef Jorge provided an amazing and entertaining show! I ordered their Hibachi Salmon with Avocado Tartar and I loved the noodles that came with it. It was a great addition to the salmon! The tartar sauce was so good I had to ask for extra to-go. I would definitely order this again. Drinks are slightly on the lighter side, so be prepared to spend $$ on drinks if you're a heavyweight.
