Let me start off by saying my review is a bit biased. I grew up going to Benihana's quite often between the ages of 4 and 10. My Mom was even a server at the Burlingame location for a while. I still love going even though the experience itself has probably gotten a tad stale over time. This is a decent location. Easy to get to and plenty of parking. Decor and ambiance are typical for a Benihana. Nothing more, nothing less. Still a fun place for kids and parties. Of course it's expensive, but everyone should know that by now. We've been to Benihana twice now for lunch and have really enjoyed it both times! We prefer sitting at a regular table off to the side rather than at the hibachi tables, and it's been perfect with the little ones. The toddlers LOVE the miso soup, and the chicken fried rice is always a must for us. Angel has been our server on both visits, and the service has been excellent! Our most recent visit was for my birthday, and Angel and the team went above and beyond to make our lunch extra special. I really appreciated how well they took care of us. The only reason I came here after my last disastrous experience was because of a family birthday event and this is where they wanted to go. We decided to sit in the lounge area and order from their $39.99 menu. I ordered the steak, which was dry and flavorless. The chicken fried rice had no seasoning and the meat was hard. The mango Margarita was okay, I've had way better. The highlight was the spicy chicken gyoza, that had flavor. This is the first time I'd been to a Benihana where no one liked the food, it was just bad. The only reason they get two stars instead of one is because the service was excellent this time. Our server was amazing, she gets five stars. The food was the one star. I used to love Benihana, now I don't. Maybe it's just the Concord location that's this bad. I'm honestly not interested in returning to this location. My son and I stopped coming because of the poor service. But I have one relative who still wants their birthday here. Came for Mothers day lunch and got the 5 course meal with fried rice. Got seated fairly quickly and just had to wait a hit for the cook to come over. Baby girl got to see the cook do all his tricks and she def enjoyed the show. One the staff members saw baby girl asking for the food while we were waiting and offered to make her a bowl of white rice mixed with the onion soup and a few ice cubes to cool it down. It was a winner and she enjoyed it more then we thought she would. I ordered the salmon with avocado tartar sauce and fried rice. The udon garlic butter noodles were very good and the salmon paired nicely with the fired rice. Also got unlimited lemoade and got to switch up the flavors between mango, rasberry and strawberry. Since I never heard back from them about my experience I'll leave it here is been over a week. I am extremely disappointed with my experience at this location. I placed two separate online orders and was quoted approximately 30 minutes for completion. I arrived about 40 minutes after placing the orders, expecting the food to be ready or close to ready. Instead, we ended up waiting a total of approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes from the time the orders were placed. Unfortunately, the customer service made the situation even more frustrating. Each time I approached the employee working at the takeout station and asked for an estimated completion time, her response was simply, "You ordered a lot of food." I understand that I placed a large order; however, I was asking for an ETA, not to be judged or questioned about the amount of food I purchased. If a larger order requires additional preparation time, that should be reflected in the quoted pickup time or communicated professionally to the guest. I was also very concerned by what I observed at the sushi station. There appeared to be very little sense of urgency despite the significant delay, and I repeatedly witnessed the employee preparing sushi touching her hair and/or hat while working with food. From a food-safety and sanitation standpoint, this was extremely concerning and made me uncomfortable with how my order was being handled. What was equally disappointing was the lack of visible leadership. I observed an individual who appeared to be the General Manager interacting with and hugging another team member who was wearing a hijab. As a Regional Manager and restaurant operator myself, I understand the importance of maintaining professionalism on the floor, particularly when guests are waiting and service is significantly behind. I attempted to make eye contact with him in hopes of getting assistance with my delayed order, but instead of checking in or acknowledging the situation, he disappeared from the area. I later saw him walk toward the kitchen. After waiting that long and receiving such poor service, I was hoping that at the very least the quality of the food would make up for the experience. Unfortunately, that was not the case. When we finally received our order, approximately half of the 16 sushi rolls we ordered had little to no crab mix in them. After spending a significant amount of money and waiting nearly an hour longer than originally quoted, receiving food that was poorly prepared was incredibly upsetting. I understand firsthand that restaurants get busy and that large orders can take additional time. However, delays can be handled with communication, urgency, hospitality, and proper execution. None of those things were demonstrated during this visit. Between the excessive wait, dismissive customer service, sanitation concerns, lack of leadership presence, and poor food quality, this experience was completely unacceptable and ruined what should have been an enjoyable evening. My family and I came in for the 45-minute lunch special they had advertised. I asked the host what the difference was in the cut sizes for the special. They said they didnt know. No big deal; we were seated for about ten minutes before our server came to take drink and appetizer orders. When he came back with the drinks, I asked about the steak sizing for the lunch special, and he said we're "not allowed" to order from the menu because of the table we were seated at. We came at 4:30 on a Saturday afternoon. The AC is broken to start. We were seated at a high top as to get quick service. The service was poor, taking over 5 mins from seating to greeting. I've eaten at Japanese restaurants from the East Coast of the U.S. to Japan, and this was by far the worst I have had in my life. The ginger dressing on the salad was in clumps, the steak was cooked improperly and had no seasoning. My shrimp were essentially frozen shrimp that had been heated up. Either this place just doesn't care, or Benihana is by far the worst hibachi chain in the U.S. I will unequivocally never go back to a Benihana - one and done. We came to Benihana to celebrate my mom's birthday. We had a 2pm reservation and, even though we were running a little behind, the staff was able to seat us quickly, which I appreciated. Overall, the experience was good, but there were a few things that could have been better. First, this location charges an additional $8 for fried rice on the weekends if you're seated at the hibachi grill. Regular tables don't have this charge, which felt unnecessary. Honestly, I'd prefer they just include the cost in the meal rather than tacking on an extra fee. Second, I was surprised that this location didn't offer yum yum sauce. At most hibachi grill restaurants, you get a ginger-based sauce and a creamy yum yum sauce. I specifically asked for yum yum and was given a thick, flavorless sauce instead. I would have preferred they simply let us know it wasn't available. Other than those two issues, the meal and service were good. Unfortunately, there was an issue with my order, and when I brought it to the manager, Elisabeth, her response was rude and unprofessional. Instead of listening to my concern or trying to resolve the situation, I felt dismissed and unwelcome. This may have been my first time at Benihana but I had always seen people's photos or videos or what not and thought to myself, wait have I really never been?! Fast forward to a recent get together with my extended family, we brought both my kid and my nephew and this was my kid's first time at Benihana and he was so impressed and so mind blown! Omar the chef did such a great job with all his little tricks that left my sweet 6 year old hooting and hollering at how amazed he was. There was so much food and yet I couldn't stop eating. The fried rice was so good that my dad who originally ordered just steamed white rice ended up asking for the fried rice too (especially after watching it be made in front of his eyes...and nose haha) My child ordered the chicken tenders which was truly more like chicken katsu which he enjoyed, although I do wish it had maybe come out a bit earlier like when we were getting some of our hibachi chicken and stuff since he just was watching everything cook and getting hungry (and sadly he didn't want fried rice or the veggies). The bartender in particular has had a major attitude on more than one visit, which is frustrating when you're paying premium prices. Cynthia was very rude. Straight up ignored me. I enjoy Benihana. It's a good place to take your family. You can enjoy sitting at the hibachi, where the chef will cook the food in front of you (fun), or sit in the bar/lounge at a booth or regular table and skip all of that. The ambiance is fairly nice for a chain restaurant. I often order off of the sushi menu, but my family likes the hibachi chicken and habachi steak. The fried rice is yummy. My family and I were very excited to go into the restaurant and have a nice experience however, the grill master seem to be rather disinterested in cooking for us and we didn't get a whole lot of the extra frills that you normally would at a Benihana experience. The food was OK....a bit bland but the sauces help. We got exactly what we ordered however, I did feel like since my grandmother preferenced that she didn't want certain vegetables that should've been adhered to. The chef still gave them to her so she had to pick out her food which made her experience a little more frustrating. This is a late post but I went in February to celebrate my birthday, I had made a reservation and got sat down over an hour late. The ambiance was okay but the floors were a mess, I get it was busy but come on is a freaking restaurant. They moved us from our table across the room to facilitate accommodation to a large group of people and we were okay with the other guests around our table. Weren't offered anything apologies except thanks for moving tables. The food was okay, my daughter's chicken strips were overcooked and the price, well everyone knows is expensive. The usher told us there are only 2 parties and 7 of us totally, so we can be a bit comfortable with an empty chair between us. 830p the very rude skinny hostess came to the table and told me to move one seat over, cos she decided to jam another party of 2 at the table! 845p, waitress came to take order. **Meanwhile I saw a manager in the dining room checking on guests, I got his attention. I told him my frustration with their reservation system, it is unheard of that a RESERVATION runs 1.5 hours late, takes another 20 MINUTES for a server to show up at the table! Also let him aware that it for my bday celebration, and this experience totally ruined it! He was compassionate, a good listener, offer his empathy as well as two appetizers. In addition, he extended his offer to accept the birthday voucher. So that softened the blow a bit. 857p, soup finally showed up, and lemonade, but still no mojito! 906p, mojito finally arrived, and edamame. It is yellowish looking, super mushy like can beans! Waitress explained it was steamed and it is supposed to be that way - hmmm NO! I had to insist i like some that hasn't been cooked to death! 918p, edmame replacement arrived. Wow, at this point I'm surprised I didn't need to wait an hour! **Chef Naweed arrived. (2 hours since the reservation time!). Chef showed off his skills, made everyone laugh, from stacking 4 eggs, to tossing food into some of our mouths. He did a wonderful job, cooking for 9 hungry people isn't easy! He made sure he paid attention to each person, great Chef, great personality. Within minutes he put grilled veggies and shrimps on our plates. Finally some food! He was nonstop cooking! We finally got our main entrees at 1010pm! This is not dinner, it is midnight snack! (Note, NOT chef's fault, he was cooking nonstop as fast as he can). So the bill came, they have the nerve to charge TWO edamames! Unbelievable. At 1045p, we are finally leaving, decided to stop in the bathroom, oh my gosh it is dirty and filty, wet counter, out of soap, tissues and napkins on the floor inside, in the stalls, and outside the bathroom entrance. It is such a terrible experience. There was a lobby full of people who have to wait 1.5 hours for their RESERVATIONS! How can a restaurant like this isn't capable of effectively managing their reservation system??? The prices is a direct contrast of the quality of food or service. Mediocre food at best, bare minimum wait service, rude and unprofessional hostess. FIX your reservation system, do not overbook, train your servers and the hostess the definition of customer service! read more
