Once you're able to find your way in from the unmarked exterior (follow the giant lemon), the dim and dark interior make it great for a date night or friends night out! One of my favorite meals so far of 2026. The tasting menu with the pairing is such a good deal with very generous portions for both food and pairings. I don't always enjoy pairings, but I did enjoy this specific one as it complemented all of the courses delightfully. 2 wines, 2 sakes, 1 cocktail, and broth The mochi pork belly tacos had a very unique contrast of textures, pork melts in your mouth with the chewiness of the shell, with a sweet tang. The hamachi was fresh with the sauce being so good I scooped it alone with my spoon to savor more of! The dashi broth pairing was one of my favorite beverages, it was a grounding reprieve from all the dishes before resuming the rest of courses. My favorite is unpictured but the agedashi tomato was an unexpected surprise. I don't even love tomatoes but this was amazing! The shell, the seasoning, everything was very intentional so that it isn't bland but also not overly salted. Depth and flavor. Overall, I would come back as there wasn't a single dish that fell short. Excited to try other foods on the menu! Ryu and staff were incredible with presentation, service, and general attention to each and every table and patron.

Weave through the narrow streets of the Arts District, construction in progress every block, sketchy skid rowers, furtively searching for a parking spot. If you find one buy a lottery ticket too as it's your lucky day. There is a small lot catty corner from the entrance across the street. $20 for 2 hours which burned a hole in my Uni money. "Bengara" the sign on the door is no bigger than the last line on an eye chart, but you found it. Once inside, they got you. Hit the Sake list first and wash away the anxiety of a long slog on the 5 Fwy and the anxious quest for parking. Bengara means the soul of the fire (the hottest part of the smoldering Binchotan). Aptly named as Bengara is a hot ticket in LA and deservedly so. The look: Arts District Industrial chic with exposed construction guts; charcoal gray everything, including gray preserved dead Bonsai trees. The Vibe: This is for a date night or a surprise your mate site. Who shows: Smart Uberees At 5:00, its quiet. At 8:00 the loop is crankin' with J-Techno Pop. The Bar: A short list of Beer, Wine, and curated Sake options that only exist here. The Staff: Stephanie was a charmer. That girl had a warm smile, knew the Menu and coursed everything into a pleasant dining rhythm. Brimming with confidence enough to share her honest opinions when requested and required. Now, that was as refreshing. "Have the Citrus Ice Cold Soba as your final dish before you ease into dessert", she said with authority. The Food: Make no mistake, this kitchen makes no mistakes. Food this good makes you want to dress up a little too. How about those custom Jeans you had made at Betty Smith's in Tokyo? Yeah, or maybe settle on your best pair of expando pants and a 2X Hoodie. Once you've made your nest, relaxed a bit, and heard the shared plate spiel, ticked off all the dishes you want you're all set to enjoy something special. Sip some Sake (Hakkasan Junmai Dodgers Special) and heard the shared plate spiel, ticked off all the dishes you want you're all set to enjoy something special. Be advised you will order with your eyes because every dish on the Menu sounds like just what you want. None disappointed when they were set before me. While the $98 Omakase of Bengara greatest hits will wink at you, I think the ala carte options are a better choice. Begin with an amusing Amuse Bouche. A cup of Hot Dashi Consomme. The House Made Tofu was excellent. Served with Ume (Tart Plums) Tiny Whitebait, and Kohlrabi KimChi. The Silky Tofu resembled an upside down Panna Cotta. It was served with Smoked Salt, Soft Cured Cabbage Threads, house made plumy BBQ Sauce, and Vinegar/Chili Pickled Daikon. Build a structure on your spoon with a little bit of everything. This dish was marvelous. Crispy Pork Belly Tacos were actually mini Mochi Crepes, with Ume Honey, and Daikon. The Pork Belly was just fatty enough to make you feel guilty and then want a second order immediately. Your Cardiologist never needs to know. Moroni Caesar Salad was nothing short of dramatic. Three hefty Little Gem Wedges with a couple of thin crispy Milk Bread triangles for crunch and a heady Garlicky, Mustardy, Umami bomby Dressing worthy of Caesar Cardini who smiled down from the eternal kitchen pass through. This is easily one of the best Salads you will find anywhere. Miso Black Cod on a Stick was next with house made Soy drizzled over Crushed Daikon. The Cod was happy to end up here and respect was paid to it by cooking it gently over Binchotan. The Fish was prepared dead perfect. It was Cod bliss and Fish this good requires stopping by the kitchen to heap praise on the Chef and Cooks on your way out the door. Uni Kiritampo featured Uni flown in from Hokkaido (Univille). The Uni was draped over a UFO shaped oval of Red Miso Rice. It looked like a food version of a Homecoming Queen laying over an exercise ball. While you soak up that image accept that this dish was terrific, even if Uni ain't your thang, it soon will be. Mary's Half Chicken ($24) was really a Poulet or Cornish Game Hen. It was so small it had to race across the street instead of strutting like the clucking barnyard bully. It was just right after all the other courses enjoyed before this one. The Chicken came with Togarashi to sprinkle and house made Teriyaki Sauce to dip. Yes, the Chicken was small, but it was flowing with Chicken Juices and was plastic fork tender. Please, flip me the bird. It was magnificent. Handmade Citrus Soba was icy cold and the bowl was slurped dry quickly leaving room for a brick of Chestnut Cake with a quenelle of Black Sesame Ice Cream along with a side cup of Apple Wasabi Sorbet which sounded weird but was unique and delicious. Both desserts were transcendent. I have been transported to dining heaven having dined here. Bengara...chouwa...hoorah!

The vibes at Bengara are great - dark interior, amazing service, fun area as well! The food, however, didn't quite reach the same level - but given everything else I did enjoy my dinner! The smoked lemon sour and strawberry dream drinks were great. Maybe the best part of our meal! For starters, the enoki tempura was super crispy (and flaky - hard to eat it without making a mess) and the sauce was delicious. The carpaccio was served on a jelly with chili coffee oil that absolutely made that dish. The eggplant was a bit of a miss for me - all the flavor focus went into the miso and the eggplant wasn't quite as flavorful. Texturally this was a bit of a mushy bite as well. The duck definitely stood out as a good entree - I would've liked a crispier exterior, but it was cooked to the perfect level and the sauce was great. Bengara was a great experience, and I hope to try other dishes if I return!

New Japanese restaurant as of April 2026 located in the Arts District. I don't feel educated enough to confidently say it's an Izakaya restaurant, but it does definitely feel Izakaya-Ish. I saw that some of their cooking includes the use of Binchotan charcoal. This place has a sleek interior and it's not huge so I feel like it's going to be hard to get a reservation during the busy times. Also, the entrance is on the backside of the building meaning the entrance is not on third street. It's located next to Wurstkuche (sp?). The menu has a good amount of variety and includes lots of proteins as well as vegetable based dishes. You can also order sake, beer, or a variety of cocktails. The waitstaff was very attentive and friendly. I made a midweek reservation for myself and some friends so it wasn't difficult to get a table. We ordered a bottle sake for the table and: - Kobujime ocean trout - Tamamiso eggplant - Ebi katsu sandwich (shrimp sando that was a special that evening) - Enoki tempura - Agedashi tomato - Moromi Caesar salad - Tiger prawns All the food was very beautifully presented and most importantly, delicious! I really like that Agadashi tomato and tempura, but really I enjoyed everything. I also like putting some of the leftover roe from the fish dish on the chips from the sandwich dish. We didn't have any room, but next time I would definitely wanna try the hambagu steak over rice. If I had one criticism, I would say the pacing of the dishes, came out a little too quickly. But it wasn't anything that took away from my enjoyment and I feel like that's something that will probably improve after they are open for a while. Just a great meal / experience overall and I'm a big fan of this place. I think it's a wonderful addition to the Arts District I was able to find parking pretty easily about a block away since this was a weeknight.

We had an incredible dining experience at Bengara and can't wait to return. We opted for the $60 prix fixe menu for our party of 9, and every single course was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. I was especially impressed that I was able to call earlier that same evening and they were able to accommodate our large group. The Toyosu carpaccio that started the meal was outstanding, the citrus soba was a perfect finish, and the Mt. Lassen trout was one of the standout dishes of the night. The duck breast was such a hit that even the youngest member of our group ordered an extra serving! The Hambāgu steak over rice was the grand finale- everyone was already full, but it was too good not to finish. Our guests visiting from Vancouver were thoroughly impressed, not only by the flavors but by the presentation of every dish that came to the table. The ambiance, service, and attention to detail made the evening feel special from start to finish. Overall, an exceptional dining experience and one of the most memorable meals we've had in Los Angeles.

Came here on a Sunday for dinner. We were the first ones there so service was amazing! Our server explained the menu to us and made quite a few suggestions. This place is great for a first date! Every food we received were made beautifully. To be honest I was not a fan of the pork belly tacos. It was more on the slimy side and not crispy. The saltiness and sweetness of the sauce did not go well for me. I would not order that one. The duck paired amazingly with the yuzu kosho sauce. The enoki mushroom tempura looked and tasted like fried onions. The cod was good but not great. The Japanese hamburger steak also paired very well with the yuzu koshu. I would say my top choices would be the hamburger steak on rice and the duck breast. Would I come back to eat? Only on special occasions and take people for their first time.

Man it pains me to write this review. There's a lot to highlight that was great: the service was fantastic, the space is beautiful, the flavors were authentic and you can tell a lot of attention to detail went into the dishes. But there were some big misses too. But before all that, the vibe was a bummer. Peak Friday night hours and the place was pretty much dead. Really takes away from the experience. As for the food, we ordered a bunch of stuff and so many dishes were missteps. Driving home $250 poorer with not much to show for it lol. The dishes we got: 1. Tofu- very unique and beautifully presented. I would say it was a dish done well but just not for me. Very authentic flavors but just too intense for me. Personal preference though 2. Carpaccio- best dish of the night by far. Truly delicious in every way 3. Avocado salad- this is where things start going down hill. The avocado in an avocado salad was rock hard. To their credit, the kitchen took it back and made a new one with more ripe avocado but even still there were pieces here and there that weren't good. The salad had a nice flavor but if you're operating at this price point it's pretty egregious to have unripe avocado 4. Agedashi tomato- the flavor of the tomato was good and unique. The dough around it was soggy and gross. The temperature was lukewarm and unappealing 5. Crab croquet- this one was actually pretty good. Hot and crispy. Nice flavors. A little soupier than I like but definitely not a lowlight of the night 6. Enoki mushroom tempura- another solid dish. Not too greasy. Fun to eat 7. Trout- nice presentation but temperature was off again. Lukewarm 8. Miso cod- lukewarm, no nice char like on some photos I'd seen. Turns out they aren't doing their full genshi grill until they clear something up with the LA health dept so that was a huge bummer 9. Eggplant- not a fan We go to LA once a month and I spend eons agonizing over where to spend that precious night out. This was a big miss on almost all counts, and I'm mega bummed

This was one of the best dining experiences we've had in recent memory. Despite coming on opening night, the entire service from start to finish went extremely smoothly and without any hiccups. If I had to nitpick on any one thing, it was that it took a while for some of the dishes to arrive; but that might have been because we kept adding more items throughout the dinner because we kept wanting to try more! The first thing you notice is the attention to detail here - the tableware used were all high quality and imported from Japan. We started with the carpaccio, house made tofu, crab croquette, and agedashi tomato. The kanpachi was fresh, and the kumquat added a welcome burst of acidity to the dish. The tofu had a texture similar to creme fraiche, and went well with all the pickles provided. The croquette contained a generous amount of crab meat, but the star of the show for me was the agedashi tomato - I felt that the sweet, salty, sour, umami of the tomato made a noticeable improvement over the traditional tofu. After we finished our starters, we started working on our grilled items - the eggplant, miso rice skewer w/ uni, miso black cod, pork shoulder, and lamb chop. The black cod was stellar, the pork shoulder was one of the most tender, juicy pieces of pork I've ever been able to sink my teeth into, and the lamb chops were seasoned and cooked to perfection, with the subtle binchotan charcoal adding a nice smoky flavor that wasn't overpowering. Finally, we finished with the citrus soba, which was delightfully refreshing - I just wish we had it earlier instead of at the end of the meal to pair with all the proteins from the grill. For dessert, we had the matcha tiramisu, apple wasabi sorbet, and kinako ice cream - not only were the sorbet and ice creams novel and unique, but also delicious at the same time. I would totally order those two items next time! We will be back to try the tiger prawns and wagyu which we somehow missed this time around. Thanks again to all the staff for such a wonderful experience!

Superlative izakaya. From the enoki tempura starter, miso cod on a stick, amazing eggplant in a bed of hot stones to chicken katsu sando w homemade chips and the citrus soba as a finale, everything was oishi. Props for front row showing of Argentina v Switzerland FIFA match as entertainment. Waitstaff and owner checked on us periodically so attention to detail and feedback on dishes were noted. Thank you for a great dining experience. I also liked my matcha lemonade as refreshment.

    Pork belly tacos

Had dinner here over the weekend and what an amazing deal! $98 for a tasting menu WITH drinks included! The menu was long. Fave dishes were the adashi tomato and miso cod. Chicken was good and hearty portion as well. Drinks paired very well. Service was great and ambiance was nice and chill. Parking is a challenge in arts district though.

The sea urchins one is creamy and VERY RICH. The cream sauce bend in really well with the sea urchins. But definitely not something you would order if you are on a weaker stomach. The duck udon is flavorful with plenty of meat. The soup pair perfectly with the udon as well. There was a line outside before it opened. But not too bad. Udon noodles were good, but it was not excellent. It did have light chewy texture. BUT in comparison to Meiji Seimen, it fell short, really short! I was disappointed. BEEF BOWL It was delicious! Beef was tender and moist and loved the caramelized onion too. Rice was delicious too, not dry nor mushy. Served with pickled red ginger. A very satisfying bowl. Sat at the bar, so watched them make udon from scratch, which was nice. WAIT LIST There was a line when I got there, just as it opened. It wasn't long, but everyone wrote their name down on a wait list. There's a sheet of paper placed on the table outside. Please write your name down ASAP, as that will help in making sure that you will grab a seat. Also, the lines are disorganized too, so it's best to write down your name, so no one cuts in front of you. It is a small restaurant. Limited seats. CUSTOMER SERVICE It was okay. Everyone got in the restaurant in the order they came in. Service was quick and there were no delays in taking orders. The server came by quickly and dropped off the check as she saw that I was nearly finished with my meal. PARKING Parked at Joe's Autoparks. It was $15! I did not know until after I paid the ticket. Very difficult to find parking in this area, so not many options unless you want to walk really far, back to your car in 90 degree heat. There was another parking garage next to Joe's, but the price was the same! Would I come back again? Not sure. Given that the udon wasn't what I expected, it may be my last time here. Also, parking sucks.

I am not joking when I say they were the best restaurant gyoza I've had in Los Angeles. Juicy, warm, nice golden crisp on the bottom, and flavorful filling. The pacific oysters are a good size and I really enjoyed the yuzu-kosho ponzu sauce on it. The spicy tuna crispy rice have a good amount of spicy tuna on top & I loved how crispy they made the rice underneath. The Kodo trio comes with uni, toro, & wagyu and the Toro sampler comes with o-toro, chu-toro, akami. All of these handrolls were phenomenal & just left you wanting more. The Wagyu katsu you cook on a hot stone at the table which I liked as an interactive dish. The Wagyu cheeseburger was dripping with juice but still had those crunchy edges. The Uni pasta was beautiful & delicious. The Chimichurri prawns I could eat multiple plates of- the shell comes sliced down the middle so you just have to peel it off. For dessert we ordered the Kodo basque cheesecake & Miso chocolate torte. I love a basque cheesecake & the sesame crumble added great texture. The miso chocolate torte made me wish I ordered my own. Everything from start to finish was amazing, it's hard to pick favorites. Parking- valet $13

Food is delicious, drinks are good, and parking isn't hard to find if you're willing to walk a little. The design kinda dark inside, but the patio is always nice. The best part? I can be in and out in less than an hour if I wanted!
