They not only called to cancel AFTER the appt time - so after 8AM SAME DAY - but then they said they could only reschedule a month out! When I said it was BS the agent on the phone raised her voice as if she was the client - when I said I was going to leave a review reflecting this bad customer service, she didn't seem to care much. Attention: Good reviews for this company might be fake from their friend and families. Bad service and manager was not nice and would not take responsibility for it. Terrible, terrible company. I wish I could rate for Zero Star. I have used this company for my generator fixed up and maintenance. The company has sent a very unprofessional guy to fix my generator and the demanded for consecutive service for 3 times (as far as I can recall probably for $1000) for certain amount of money. The claim that they don't offer single service. The guy did something to make me lose my power. My electrical power was gone right after he restarted a test of my generator. I called the company to talk about this issue and they kept denying it. I talked to the manager, and then same thing-- denying it. At the end I have to spend another $350-400 to hire another electrician to check on my electrical power. So for the same month due to Benfield wrong doing for my generator and caused me to hire another electrician, It costed me spent $1000 just for fixing up these issues. For the next to maintenance service, they sent a guy who is a little more professional and senior but still could not keep my generator working. It was a big rip-off for bad service and unprofessional service. After all these maintenance service, I stopped using them. Of course, they claimed that for fixing up my generator there is certain amount of money I have to pay ( It was very pricey). So what have them done to my generator for maintenance? Since my husband paid for 3 times services already I might as well just finish it. But it is a very bad company and bad service. Please be aware of hiring this company. In summary, Paul Dressler (CEO) and Joshua Cardwell (General Manager) repeatedly made contractual deadlines in which Benfield did not contractually deliver on. Crews were asked multiple times to leave my home due to safety concerns, failed delivery expectations, and conflicting work orders provided by Benfield. I delayed installation due to winter weather and rutting up my yard with heavy equipment, which Mario assured me would be used, and I believe I was charged for in my contract. Work crew safety was put in dire jeopardy as they were made to hand maneuver (no heavy lift equipment was provided) a 48kw generator down a very steep and slippery embankment while it drizzled rain - one worker was nearly crushed when the generator became too much for the 4 men, and it slid into the concrete slab. I tried to stop the crews from handling the generator BEFORE they started because they were without proper safety protocols and heavy lift equipment. I verbally informed J. Cardwell before the incident, but it had no impact. J. Cardwell, and the CEO P. Dressler were fully aware of these events AND many other safety related mishaps such as a Liquid Propane flex hose that was clearly leaking LP gas, but had already been certified as inspected although, I was the one who discovered it spitting from the pipe! Paul Dressler was asked to engage and was given many opportunities to address my concerns and correct them, but failed to do so. Work crews showed up without the proper battery to start the generator, and instead used an improperly sized battery which resulted in a damaged to a brand new generator. Broken spark plugs and wires were discovered - likely from improper handling. In the process of installing two switches (on an electrically energize panel), the crew management to burn up an 85" high definition Samsung TV. When the work crew departed my residence on May 28th, they failed to turn on the LP Gas to my home, and left electrical switches off. I was left to troubleshoot these issues myself. The salesman, Mario tried to come by to correct the issues, but by then I had family over for Memorial Day weekend - with no tv, no hot water, and uncomfortably warm house. My yard is still in disarray, trenches dug, electrical not inspected, piping running into my home not sealed properly, and a non-functional 48kw generator that is brand new but has broken wires, spark plugs and a damage solenoid. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!! Like the reviews before this one on 5/6/2020 - Paul and Joshua DO NOT CARE AND ARE A COMPLETE RIP-OFF. read more

I contacted Benfield Electric and spoke to Mario for a second opinion. Mario was great. I had recurring problems due to another Lowe's subcontractor improperly installing my whole house Generac Guardian 16KW Generator, whereby water was getting into the transfer switch. My generator was running continuously even with mainline power still on. Benfield gave me a very reasonable price quote of $259 and stuck to the price to fix the issue. Another Generac service wanted to charge me over $3500 to relocate the automatic transfer switch inside the house. Mario had me email and text pictures so he could dispatch a crew with the correct skillset and level of experience to immediately address the issue. The crew came out first thing the next morning (despite rainy weather) and fixed the issue in less than 30 minutes for the quoted price (and they did not even have to cut off the power since my wife and I are teleworking due to the COVID-19 pandemic). The crew from Benfield were very efficient and cleaned up better than the area was before they came. I'm very satistfied with the price and the great customer service. I will be using Benfield going forward for all of my future electrical needs. Five Stars, Excellent Rating. read more

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY, THEY ARE A FRAUD!!!! I had service rendered to try and fix my home generator. I called on 9/24/2021 to tell Benfield Electric that my generator was not fixed by the service call that was made. I was told by the Benfield service manager Gwen Deller that in order for them to come out and fix my generator correctly I would have to pay the previous balance of $474.34. I explained that I shouldn't have to pay that balance because they didn't fix my generator the first time. Gwen explained that if I paid the $474.34 they would come and actually fix my generator for free as a warranty call. So, I paid them $474.34 on 9/24/2021. After the technician came by my home on 9/28/2021, he said he needed parts and then I got another invoice for $506.09. I called on 10/13/2021 and the supervisor Joshua Cardwell told me they wouldn't do anything until I paid them an additional $506.09. He then hung up in my face when I told him I wanted a refund because I had already paid $474.34 and my generator had never been fixed and they promised me they would fix it for free since I had already paid them for services that were never completed. Benfield Electric scammed me, took my $474.34 and my generator still doesn't work. This is very upsetting and I don't believe this company should be in business with these unprofessional and unethical practices. AVOID THEM AT ALL COSTS. read more

I moved from the home I owned and loved in Haymarket VA to a rental I hate in Fairfax. Benfield helped me install a crystal chandelier 15 years ago - they even hung the crystals (because of the height of the fixture I could not). I've remembered them for my move this time; to remove the same chandelier and another legacy chandelier, and they rehung one for the new owners. Couldn't ask for a better experience (once again- thanks Josh!). In my new rental, I needed to not only re-hang those same two fixtures, I needed to remove the monstrosities (ugly brass brutes) and I needed to replace bulbs and clean very large unreachable fixtures (2) in both the stairwell and the foyer. Marlin and Josh made my day. They were only one two service providers (think movers, maids) that actually delivered the service they said they would during this unbearable move. Companies should train their employees to set expectations and keep them, not just "try" to keep them. I don't give people credit for trying. Sorry, kids. Kudos to this excellent company, I would highly recommend. read more

I have two generators. One at home and one at a rental property. The one at our home was not working. I engaged them to do semi-annual maintenance expecting that the home generator be fixed in the process. Maintenance was done for both before the home generator was fixed. The electrician said that he can fix the generator for $250, but if we don't do the things that he recommended (that cost around $1100-1200 per generator), we'll have problems down the road. After paying $770 for full year maintenance, and around $2300 "upgrades" for both generators and an additional $458 for diagnostics, our home generator still does NOT work. The technician approached us and said that we need to get our gas pipe (that worked more than 10 years) upgraded to a bigger one. He said that this will solve the problem and that he will do it for $1000. If he does it through Benfield, it'll be $2000. I agreed over the phone but felt that something is really wrong so I called Benfield. They sent me another technician to look at the generator and said that the work the first technician talked about should only be $700. Due to the fear of retaliation from this employee, I didn't tell Benfield that he offered to work this job personally (he asked us not to tell Benfield). I lost my trust in this company so I contacted them and wanted them to refund me the difference between the semi-annual maintenance and the annual maintenance. It's only $110 for both generators. For the money that I paid them and the little value that I received, it's by no means unreasonable. However, it took forever till I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. They might be good in installing new products or maintaining something that is working fine. To be fair, maybe repairing generator is their only weak area. But dishonesty is something completely different. I still find it hard to trust any electrician. This entire experience is pure nightmare. read more

Benfield Electric did an outstanding job installing recessed lighting in my living room. Furthermore, they were a pleasure to deal with throughout the process, and they went the extra mile to make sure I was satisfied when a small issue arose. Zach Lopez came out to do the estimate. He was on time (always important), friendly, knowledgable, and really took the time to explain any issues that might come up during the installation. He also answered any questions I had and was able to give me an estimate within a day. Compare this to another company (who will remain nameless) who came out to do an estimate. They were there less than 5 minutes, didn't really explain much of what they needed to do, and didn't really take any time to make sure my questions were added. Though their estimate came in slightly lower than the one from Benfield Electric, I knew from my interaction with Zach that Benfield would be worth it. The installation was performed by a man named John. He did a great job making sure the lights were installed in the symmetric configuration I wanted while accounting for all the constraints (i.e. joists in the ceiling). I had purchased some GE brand LED bulbs to install. When I turned on the lights, I noticed the lights making a humming/buzzing sound. Some quick research online informed me that this was due to the dimmer and the bulbs being incompatible. I contacted Zach, who provided me with the model number of the dimmer so that I could find compatible bulbs. I ordered some LED bulbs from Cree, which were listed as being compatible. However, when I installed these bulbs, I still heard that hum/buzz. I got back in touch with Zach, who was determined to make things right. He sent somebody over to install LED bulbs from Sylvania, which ultimately worked without any noise. I was really appreciative of his commitment to customer service, and I would highly recommend Benfield Electric. read more

Not particularly helpful. And note, I've never actually used them for electrical work -- I TRIED to hire them, but after the nonsense just trying to speak them, won't waste my time -- and recommend you don't waste yours. During my first call, they picked up promptly and the first line call support was pleasant. So far so good. My frustration the started upon reaching the wrong person (which was my fault) that I then had to call again (e.g. not transferred). Then spoke with J.T. After about 30 seconds, explaining that I was having work done - expanding my panel box to accommodate additional circuits, Jim seemed to be impatient. The comments like "you would need to take the panel off, but we can't recommend you do that" (which while not hard to do, is obviously not a good idea... except for a electrician) weren't particularly helpful. Clearly no electrician (or wouldn't be calling), I don't know the difference between a 'panel upgrade' and 'heavy up a panel' etc.., etc... and I'm fine with taking my panel off and looking for catalog numbers. Although I would prefer not to. And so after growing increasingly frustrated back and forth,when J-- said, "well why doesn't your current contractor do the work" (because they are LANDSCAPERS, not ELECTRICIANS) I thanked him for his time and moved on to other contractors. To summarize: Benfield may hire perfectly good electricians. If you want to learn how to speak like one, you should probably call them. They seem to want to teach you right there on the phone (complete with sighs, and seemingly stupid glares through the phone). However, if you have an issue and want to explain the problem, and get it fixed... I'd recommend some place else. read more

BEWARE: This is NOT GOOD business to deal with. This company PREYS on WOMEN customers who have electrical issues. The company states they can fix an electrical problem but they charge a HIGH fee for coming out. I was game and didn't see at the time that I was being hoaxed. My issue: electrical circuit breaker that turned off due to too much power going through electric outlet at one time. After the circuit breaker went off, I went downstairs to turned it back to the 'on' position. But no electric power could be gained. I tried to troubleshoot through google (to no avail). At this point I called this electrical business. The representative asked me for my address and year my home was built. I told him my address and that my home is less than 2 years old. He then stated that oftentimes builders of new homes may use electrical outlets for construction purposes, which may LESSEN the life of circuit breakers. Long story short, I had the company come out to take a look at electrical outlet and (bad) circuit breaker. The Technician solved the problem in two seconds and I was charged the HIGH FEE for an APPOINTMENT that lasted @ 5 minutes (tech writing receipt / me talking to management about charge) read more

I own a 15kva Propane Generac generator. It's about 10 years old and about 5 months ago, it failed to start on it's weekly automatic start (it runs for 15 minutes each week). We called this company because they installed it in 2007. Not sure who recommended them, but they did a decent job on the install, so we figured what the heck. A young (in his 20's) guy shows up the first time and spent about 4 hours looking at the generator and spent most of the time on his phone talking to the senior tech because he was at a loss as to what was going on. Finally he reported that my fuel solenoid was bad and they had to order a new one. They showed up a month later with 'magnetos' and two techs. I mentioned the fuel solenoids and they assured me I was wrong. So 6 hours later they reported that they'd installed the magnetos wrong and they broke the grounding wire when they attempted to fire up the generator. So another month goes by and they return with new magnetos and the senior tech to install them. After another 4 hours, they report that they broke the bolts holding on the fan cover and would have to replace that entire piece. Another two weeks goes by, they come out, install the fan and now they claim it will start, but they aren't getting any power out of it, and it will cost an additional $3,000 to fix it. They leave, and three days later the ATS switch (that they'd been working in when they were there on Monday) caught on fire!!! Luckily someone was there to see it and called the fire department before any major damage was done to the house. To add to the review, the technicians were never on time, and not by just a little. It was not uncommon for them to be over 2 hours outside the window we were quoted. And we were never contacted to be advised of the delay. In summary, 5 months, over $1,000 and our generator is broken beyond repair. read more

They have been prompt in responding to requests for quotes and in addressing all of my questions about the quotes and throughout the entire process. I recently purchased a new home in Aldie, Virginia. I contracted them to have four (4) ceiling fans and three (3) pendant lights installed. I also needed a light in the dining room replaced. The worker arrived first thing in the morning and took his time installing the lighting fixtures. He was very professional as well as extremely efficient. Worst company ever. Ok, maybe not THE worst but pretty darn close. They installed our whole-house generator and did a decent job. Now here is the problem: we also purchased their service contract where they come out twice a year and run tests and do required maintenance on generator. Typically they call every six months and schedule a maintenance visit. Well, they were so far behind on service that they never scheduled our contractual January visit. So when the first winter storm came in Feb the generator didn't work when the power went out for three days in our area. We called and the service reps and eventually their supervisor admitted they missed their contractual January maintenance service. But for someone to come out and check it out there would be $295 emergency visit fee. Wait, what?!?! So we paid it, the tech came out and ran diagnostic tests that indicated that a low battery notice came on in Oct and would have been properly dealt with if they had come out for their contractually scheduled maintenance in January. Since that didn't happen, we had to pay the emergency fee to get it fixed when they even admitted missing their contractual service appointment. I have called and emailed the owner to give me a call to discuss. Of course they don't call because like their inability to honor their service contracts, they are dishonorable in their treatment of customers. Use a different company, they stink. Now I'm going to place this same review to HomeAdvisor, Angie's List and the Better Business Bureau. read more

I have dealt with electricians for years building or adding to various homes and can say the people at Benfield are without equal. From the initial contact through completion, the work was monitored by Zack to ensure satisfaction and John was professional and exacting in his work. My project involved two stages, moving a meter out of the way of upcoming addition to include connection to the existing service panel. After the addition was in place they returned to install an upgraded meter base and second service panel for the addition as well as the required disconnects to properly serve the old panel. The guys happily accepted my help at all stages since I am a hands on person and built the addition. They accepted my help and ideas without complaint and worked easily with my sometimes unconventional framing and trim work. Benfield had the sub-contract for electrical work on our recently complete screened-in porch and patio. Overall, extremely pleased with their work! We were very impressed with both Zach and John, particularly with their communication skills---critical anywhere but particularly so in the busy NOVA area. They placed a ceiling fan, TV, can lights, and lights to a bench on our property. Our only criticism, which is more on the lead contractor than Benfield, is to have them involved in the patio construction discussion so the construction crew could have placed the tie-in location with the house closer to the door rather than the end of the house. Had that been the case, they would not have had to "fish" the wire as much as they did inside the house. I would absolutely recommend them for any future work. read more

Benfield Installed my Generator in 2011 - I didn't have any problems until this year On 8/1/2016 my generator malfunctioned and I received an overcrank fault indicator on the control panel. Basically the engine was cranking but would not turn over and start (like a car that the engine cranks but won't start) , I called Benfield ( who installed the generator) and they schedule a service call on 8/3 On 8/3 the technician came and informed me that the control panel was faulty due to ants . I told him that I didn't think this made sense as the engine was cranking (I have some limited mechanical experience) but he assured me this was the case so I took him at his word and approved the replacement. He said that ants had damaged the unit (although it is a sealed circuit board) On 8/5 the technician came (we were out of town). I was called and he told me that he replaced the $889.07 control panel but was still getting the same overcrank fault (which was the problem in the first place) . I told him that this did not make any sense - they replaced a part that that they said was the problem and the replaced part still gave the same fault reading. I was told that "sometimes more than one thing can be wrong ". We had a long discussion as to how this didn't make sense since I am getting the exact same fault reading as was the problem I initially contacted them for. They insisted that there was nothing else they could do and now it was probably the gas line. I instructed them to replace my original control panel following which they then called me to say it was not functioning at all (however it had been reading an appropriate over crank warning until the time they removed it). They refused to do any additional work on the until I had paid them so I paid for the new control board on my credit card and told them to re install it ( as that was all I could do to at least have a potentially functional generator). . I made the decision not to re-engage Benfield and I called Boyland Electric to continue service on the generator. I spoke to the service manager Ms. Eagal who was not helpful,rude and quite frankly not very knowledgeable. On 8/8/16 Boyland Electric came to service the generator. They found the same overcrank fault and determined that the air mix box stepper motor latch was broken and this was the cause of the overcrank fault. This piece is essentially analogous to the choke on a care and will allow the engine to crank but will not turn over due to the fact that no air is getting into the engine because the latch broke . This made perfect sense and they replaced this part which cost me $831.25 and the generator now works perfectly. I had them look at the old control panel and they could see no visible 'ant' damage (although I did not have them re install it due to the additional cost) In summary: Benfield Electric: Misdiagnosed the initial problem Replaced and charged me for a part which was not the cause of the problem Left the Generator in the same unworkable condition as when they first came after charging me over $1400 for work which was not related to the problem I was required to pay an additional $831.25 to a subsequent company to perform the appropriate repairs on the generator Although I had no problems with the initial installation this company has proven to be very untrustworthy and difficult to work with and I will never use them again. Sorry to say I feel completely ripped off and lied to as well as patronized. In the aftermath of a bad storm I paid an emergency fee of close to 300 usd for an electrician to come out. He came checked everything on my whole house generator flipped it on and off and left. It broke down 10 minutes later completely over heating. I called agian, he came back out changed a cap and charged me almost another 100 dollars and left. 10 minutes later same thing. I called he didnt come back and without coming back diagnosed that it could be possibly two different parts and didnt have one of them so would order. So far I has spent nearly 500 usd for nothing and when I called to complain I got a harsh lecture from the telephone operator about maintenance like it was my fault and they were doing me a favour by coming out. I was appalled but dealing with no electricity, two young kids and trees down on the house I had to leave it. I complained on their website. Received a very nice call the following day making promises to fix the problem and have heard nothing since - almost two weeks later. So I get taken for a ride, nothing is fixed, I pay a lot of money to get lectured and then I am basically fobbed off or lied to which ever way you look at it.
