It had been about 30 years since the last time I had eaten at the Bendix and I'm happy to see that the business continues with Eva as the Owner along with her son John and grandsons Tony, Dimitri and Michael all involved to some degree. When I was younger, I never wanted to go to Bendix cause I always thought I was going to get beat up going there (8 year old mentality). Three years ago, I brought my girlfriend there and she thought she was going to get beat up. Just so happened that there was a biker gang sitting in the back... and they happened to be extremely nice. We came here in the winter about three years ago, but I fondly remember that experience. The staff was attentive, the breakfast food was astounding, and it had that rustic feel that you would expect from a diner in the middle of a movie, but with some good charm. I was born raised in Belleville New Jersey but about 20 years ago I moved out to Arizona so I now know what bad food tastes like but the one thing I really missed about New Jersey was the diners The Great food the great people you met there the whole atmosphere it's when I went back to New Jersey for a funeral recently my father 94 is all passed away on Saturday I drove to Bendix diner and and I needed a smile more than anything in the world Johnny the owner gave me a giant one has a lot of people know already he's blind but you can't tell his heart is so big his smile is so large his personality is even bigger he's a great guy the service is impeccable the food is tasty extremely reasonable but he's also funny as hell he started telling his jokes and most of it was making fun of blind people which made it even funnier because he is blind and he's just a great guy and we had a great time and I was in there on Tuesday night and it was just me and my family and a couple his friends sitting in the counter and for the first time my life I was happy to give someone money and I really wanted him to have my money and I just wanted to keep giving him more and my favorite part was at the end when I asked for the bill and normally somebody just gives you a piece of paper you sign it put it on your credit card down and it's done but that's not how he does it he goes well it's about $90 in that beautiful Jersey Greek accent and then of course you start a rallying off the numbers and he was spot on it was $90 so fuhgetaboutit God bless both him and his three sons they're all hysterical and I watched his YouTube video and it was great the interview they did for him read more

Fond Memories of John and his entire family when I was working In New Jersey...The food was great and everyone treated me like I was an old friend or even family... VERY dirty-flies everywhere inside the diner ingredients are left uncovered out of the refrigerator, the place is a complete dump, would hate to see what the back looks like. They were out of stock on the hot chocolate which I'm not even sure how you can get away with as a diner. Overall the food was average, if u can ignore how contaminated it probably is-the main cook behind the counter works with no gloves and doesn't wash his hands, touches the food, touches his nose/mouth, puts his hands basically on everything and continues to handle the food. The folks whining about the place being greasy don't get it - it's a greasy spoon diner. And it's one of the best. It's got just about everything, it's about the size of a train car, it's covered in chrome, and it is smack dab in the middle of one of the worst roads in NJ. If you pass by it without stopping for a break from the awfulness of driving 17, you're insane. John is not only the nicest waiter I've had in recent memory, but genuinely the most impressive. I have absolutely no clue how he manages to run the place. Went in with a few friends late at night a few months ago because one of them was from out of the country and wanted to visit a "genuine Jersey diner" and he was the only one out front, handling a couple of tables. The Bendix is classic New Jersey Diner Americana. Neon exterior, basic yet comfortable interior, and a predictable yet well-executed menu. Seeing as my visit was a few years ago, I couldn't even begin to remember what I ordered. But I'm certain there was nary a complaint. And that's because of the extraordinary gentleman, our waiter. We found him a bit odd at first when he didn't write down our orders, and never looked at anyone in the eye... Slowly the clues started to build, and we were able to ascertain that he was in fact, unbelievably-but-truly, completely blind. I have encountered few human beings with such courage in my lifetime. To witness this man memorizing our orders with no mistakes, navigating the restaurant with grace, and even serving our meals to us was an incredible thing to behold, worthy of immense respect and praise. Never before had a man in the food service industry so deserved the tip we gave him. I don't know if he still works there, but I shan't soon forget him. I've past by this place hundreds of times and always wanted to try it. At first glance you might not think much of the place, but it really is a nice place to eat. 1.) The staff was all nice, friendly, and accommodating. 2.) Food was delicious, I mean like these pancakes were perfect. 3.) When Jersey was the dumping ground for everyone and Sinatra crooned to adoring eyes. How the Bendix diner is still in business is the true miracle here. The building is cool, the shiny metal exterior puts you right there in the 1950's. When everything was powdered from the milk to the eggs. Do yourself a favor and take a pic and keep going. This diner is a staple for anyone who lives in NJ. It is a must!! Go there and order the pastrami. I don't like pastrami, I never eat it. But when I go here I do!! The thing I love most about it is not only is the food great, but the atmosphere is worth the trip alone. I know a lot of people have sentimental attachments to this place, but if you are an outsider trying to find a decent place to eat (and that's why you're on Yelp, isn't it?) then you can probably do better than the Bendix diner. First, it's almost laughably inconvenient to get to. If you're on the southbound side of 17, just forget it. You can't turn into it and it's not worth the u-turn. It's a nightmare in morning traffic and confusing at night. GPS will have you break six different laws trying to get there. I was here at about 10pm on a weeknight, and there was only one other customer in the whole place. Coffee was stale. French toast was somewhat undercooked. Bacon was decent but also undercooked, which was odd because there certainly wasn't any breakdown in communication: I told the waitress I wanted it extra crispy and then she turned around and cooked it. I guess I could have sent it all back, but that's not the point. The place was empty and the cook/waitress wasn't interested in conversation. After (barely) cooking my food she sat at a table with iPod headphones in, reading a book until I finally flagged her down for the check. Judging by the reviews here, I guess your experience may vary, but that was mine. On the plus side, the building itself is an interesting relic. It's a real, honest-to-goodness, antique pre-fab diner, not just a trailer they slapped some chrome on. Even the napkin holders are obviously older than I am. The whole place is in rough shape, but it's the most intact, original old diner of it's kind I've ever seen. A renovation would ruin that. For diner architecture enthusiasts, it's worth a stop. For anyone looking for good food and friendly service, look elsewhere. It's not the worst food I've ever had, but it's definitely not what I would call good. read more
