The Belmont Grill was a place where I used to hang out when I was a college student, many moons ago. My favorite was their beer cheese soup. The building was sold to a new owner and the restaurant permanently closed during August of 2026, after forty-two (42) years in business. This is one of the oldest bars in Memphis and it feels like a local dive bar. They have limited parking in the back. The bathroom can fit 1-2 people at a time. The inside lighting is extremely dark. They have happy hour until 6PM. My first drink had some type of grit in it and the server did nothing about it. They still charged me for the drink. The order drinks were fine. The redfish sandwich was really good. I wish they gave more tartar sauce and had some hot sauce. read more

First of all, the place is too dark for us old guys. Light it up, a little. Falling down those 2 stairs coming in, is not a lawsuit you need. The waitress lacked a personality; we were there Friday, Nov 14 at 11:30. Admittedly, she was the ONLY waitress on the floor. The bartender helped deliver the food. When we told the bartender we were ready to order, she said "ok" then walked off. When I ordered the potato skins, I also ordered crisp fries. The potato skins were way over-cooked and the fries were not eatable. We have eaten here many times over the years, and have never experienced a meal like this. Absolutely horrible. Came here with a few people I know after they hadn't been there in six years. The last time they went they said it was amazing, we decided to go there for lunch. We had a party of seven so of course it takes a little while, it took especially long this time. We got our food. Burgers were tiny although they had a bunch of meat they were tiny. I asked for BBQ sauce and I got something that tasted like straight up ketchup. I was not pleased. Another person got BBQ wings which were coated in the ketchup sauce which was sour. The wings weren't tossed; rather threw sauce on it. It was messy. Found 4 hairs in 1 chicken wing. 3 of which were blonde and 1 brunette. Talked to the bartender and both guys cooking were bald meaning the waters must've tossed them. I was incredibly disgusted. Then found a eyelash on my onion and a bug leg. It's dark inside and just like I remember it from childhood; dimly lit and cozy with the exact same feel as it's always had. There's spinach dip, chicken tenders, fried okra, twice stuffed baked potato's, big ol' french fries, homemade honey mustard, $5 burgers on Tuesday... that menu is comforting and comfortable. If you're a vegetarian then you're mostly out of luck, unless a salad is what you're after. It's not an extraordinary place, but it's a favorite place for many people & I appreciate that. Full bar. Clean but outdated & cramped restrooms. Smoking section nonexistent; but you can sit on a bench at the rear entrance if you're one of those who needs nicotine. "No tank top" policy. Came here with a group of seven after seeing Star Wars. It was one of the few places open so late. There were quite a few yummy specials that we took advantage of. In fact, most of the table ordered something from there (specifially the chicken philly). I wasn't that hungry so I just got an appetizer to share with the table. Hubby got a Chicken Philly without mushrooms and then didn't like it so I ate that as well. I loved it even though it definitely could've used those mushrooms to give it more flavor. Parking can be tricky but totally worth getting creative to eat here. I got my food to go and it was still tasty when I got home. Mixed feelings about this place -- I want to love it, because it feels almost like a Memphis staple, and I love Memphis. But my experience here was just super underwhelming. I'll give the good first: we liked the nachos. The fake cheese was a little thick in some places, but they had a lot of flavor and were served in a generous portion. The wings were also received pretty well, given a B+. They're whole wings and not drummies -- worth noting if you don't like that. The okay: I kinda liked the dive atmosphere and the waitress herself was pleasant. The bad: I felt that it took a little too long to get the food out. It wasn't egregious though, so no hard feelings there. The Coke was not mixed properly. It was flat and tasted like soda water rather than Coke. The fries were terribly under salted. The chicken tenders were totally flavorless and kind of soggy. And the toasted beef ravioli was mushy and made my mom feel sort of sick. Not full food poisoning, but terrible indigestion and an upset stomach. Again, I want to like this place. It's probably overall a 2.8, but I just can't justify bumping to three stars. read more

My wife and I, at one time or another in our lives, have dined at every landmark restaurant in Memphis. Only a few have escaped us. Belmont Grill is one of those. However, we finally found ourselves passing it on a Monday just when they opened. So we grabbed a parking spot and went in! First customers through the door. They greeted us and showed us to our table. I really loved the place...it brought back memories of The Cockeyed Camel (another Memphis landmark I used to frequent). And just like The Cockeyed Camel, I have heard that Belmont Grill is known for their burgers. So...we, both, ordered the burgers and Belmont Grill did not fail to impress! The buns were that "soft and sweet", buttered and toasted face side down, kind that compliment ANY burger. The thing is...Belmont Grill must have this down to a science, because this wasn't just any burger. It's the perfect burger! So so good, I found myself thinking, "when can I come up with an excuse to come back here for a burger again?". It was at that moment the waitress let us know that Tuesdays are $5 burger day! So after seeing plenty of Yelpers indicate that the Belmont Grill had arguably the best burger in Memphis, I had to give this place a try. Last Saturday, we were coming home from a Memphis Redbirds game and decided that this was high time to give it a go. We walk in and are immediately greeted by a hostess who is exceptionally friendly and seats us immediately. The establishment is very dark inside and is lit primarily by Christmas lights, which I think is a cool effect. It definitely has a dive-bar feel to it, but is exceptionally clean. Our service was exceptionally attentive and friendly throughout, and the burger was AMAZING! Also love the fact that loaded potato skins are a side option, which were huge and awesome. One thing that I love about this place is that everyone works as a team; most restaurants are so focused on what is "their table." It was good to feel like we were valued as customers. We wound up having such a positive experience that we came back a few days later. The hostess remembered us as well as our drink order, which I thought was very impressive. The only knock I have on this place is that their appetizers are not terribly impressive. The spinach-dip was not creamy enough and the cheese dip tasted store-bought. Belmont Grill has a very low-key type of atmosphere, however it does also give off a bar vibe. I checked out this location with couple of my fellow yelpers. As we entered we were greeted and promptly seated, our waitress took our drink orders and we reviewed the menu. For appetizer a friend ordered the toasted Ravoli and they were so good. The potato skins were so good. Cheese, bacon and sour cream, can you say yummy! For entree, I ordered the French Dip which tasted delicious. Slow roasted thinly sliced roast beef on a french roll, au jus sauce and swiss cheese. Very good. Overall, I really enjoyed this place. Food was great and customer service was good. Yes, this is a dimly lit little bar with horrible parking, but I love it. The Belmont Grill is always fun and I have never had a bad meal here. I'm in agreement that Belmont serves one of the best burgers in the city. It would probably be my 4th favorite, after the soulburger, Blue Plate burger, and Huey burger. Sam's and Elliott's tie for 4th too. The fried appetizers are really good, a couple of notches above regular pub grub. I like the fried mushrooms- so yum! I finally made it for burger day! I'm gonna try to make it every Tuesday. Of course you can get a burger any day, but they're $5 on Tuesday. I have not only enjoyed my three lunch visits here, but I was truly impressed by each of them. I gotta say that is one damn good burger. I think these guys deserve 5 stars from me. A burger is such a simple thing, but very hard to get it right. So how do you build a better burger? Start off with a thick patty. It cooks better and you can get a nice sear outside while still keeping a nice juicy flesh inside. Make it taste like beef. Don't cook a bad burger and then try to season it to taste. If it cooks like it's supposed to it'll taste like it's supposed to. It doesn't need lots of seasoning, especially not salt. Use quality toppings. Don't use tasteless tomatoes. That's one thing I can't stand. Give me a nice leaf of lettuce that shows some respect for your customers. Use real cheese and offer a couple choices. As much as I do like American, it is not real cheese. Don't give me onion scraps. Scraps don't go on a burger. There are many buns that are appropriate, but it's nice to have something special every now and then. The bun must serve its purpose and hold up until the bitter end. The bun must match the meat. Finally, the cook must know how to control his heat and when to flip it and when to take it off. Belmont Grill scored 100% for each category. It truly was an impressive burger. The onion rings were much better this visit than my previous one. Although I griped about parking before, it really hasn't been a problem for the three lunches I've had. I watched another server bring an appetizer to the wrong table, one of the ladies touched the plate, which burnt her finger, and then take the plate to the right table. Wings (appetizers) were VERY disappointing. Price... Would have to say was disappointed in the price. Comparison. Huey's as mentioned previously would be a spot on comparison. Between the two , though, I would give the nod to Huey's. Huey's - bigger burgers (and more variety of burgers) Costs less . draft beer (if that matters to you), WAY better wings. Today we came in on a Tuesday and to our delight the Burgers were on special for $5! This is, my FAVORITE burger in Memphis thus far. It's perfect. Charred, juicy and classic. It comes served on a buttered and toasted Po-boy type French bread with all the classic fixin's. Beautiful thick cut bright red tomato, crispy green romaine lettuce and a thick cut white onion slice. I also had a Bloody Mary. It was served with vodka, Zing Zang and a lime only in the glass but a small assortment of things for me to Doctor the drink to my liking.
