This is a popular neighborhood bar, especially the back patio when the weather is nice. Very low-key casual vibes and the food menu has a lot of options whether you want to snack and drink or have a full dinner. You order at the bar and get a number. Like I said, pretty low-key, so sometimes there's just two people at the bar, one doing the drinks and one taking orders and the line can build up. But it does seem like the kitchen is pretty quick and the people bringing out the food is super nice and helpful. For the food, I really liked the "tomato cured shrooms," which are button mushrooms marinated in a tomato sauce. If you like ketchup and mushrooms like I do, then this is a fun snack. Something about the tomato flavor gives the mushrooms a pop. The roasted radish and farro was good, but the radish was cut a bit big. I didn't want a big entree, so I got the sausage, which was decent with white bean romesco and grilled scallions. The graham panna cotta was a nice way to cool down on a warm night. I went early and sat outside, and it was getting busier when I left so the recommendation is to go early. It's nice having places like Bellwether in the neighborhood. read more

What a cute little spot! You order at the bar for both drinks and food - amazing cocktail list and menu. Popped in for an impromptu date night and sat at the bar. The staff were super friendly and the food was delicious. You can tell they use seasonal ingredients to curate their menu. We got steak, a salad (forget which), the bread & butter and the squash. We liked all of it! The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because there was quite a wait for food. Even the bread and butter took more than 20 minutes to come out, then we got the sides, and finally the steak after probably 35ish minutes. Really enjoyed my first visit to the Bellwether Bar! A friend and I visited on a recent trip to Ikea in Portland. He had identified this bar as a place he'd like to visit. So, on a rainy Saturday recently, we finally made it. The decor is great! it feels like a pub. It's kind of dark in various areas, but it is definitely cozy. We enjoyed some deviled eggs and a couple cheese burgers. I had one of the Bellwether's signature cocktails, the '69 (Don't).' Amaretto, Overproof Rum, Lemon, Dr. pepper and Coconut. We first visited a week ago, but chose to leave as the place was busy and it felt too chilly for us to sit outside (though it was cool to see other groups sitting out on the back patio). The ambience was too enticing to not make another attempt back. This week we visited on a Friday evening and the experience exceeded all my expectations. Stopped by on a Friday night and was able to find a table in the back. Two staff members immediately came by to clean the table for us. It is counter service so keep that in mind. We ordered two cocktails (57 and 60) as well as food (deviled eggs, beef tartar, steak frites, and the pork belly). They said it'd be an hour wait but fortunately we had drinks to enjoy during our wait. Really enjoyed the deviled eggs, but the beef tartar was very bland, no flavor. The steak frites were pricey ($29) for such a small portion. The pork belly was tender and delicious. Excellent vibes in the patio. I think I'd come back for the drinks but will eat elsewhere. Stop #9 on the "One Day of Adventures in Portland" This was the final destination of my adventure before heading back to the airport. It was a delightful way to spend an hour and wind down before the hustle and bustle of the airport. BUT, First impressions were sort of weird. The conversation went like this: - - "If you're not sitting at the bar, order at this kiosk" When I was ready to order they said, "wait a minute." And I had to wait. Awkwardly. At the bar. Where I couldn't sit down. And once I ordered, "You can get that, but we don't have fries tonight." Which is probably something that would have been nice to know before I ordered. - - The star of the show was the front porch. it was sunny and smelled good (like fresh flowers). There is only one table, so it can't be overcrowded. The street is just the right amount of busy where there is some brief comings and goings, but mostly quiet and serene. The wine was good. And I would have gladly taken a second glass, but no one came to check on me. I was happy to chill and read a book and sip away. And then work on the water after that. I told myself I wasn't going to go in to order another glass. If they came and checked on me, I would happily order another. But they never checked on me. The food was delightful. The crab roll had a lightly toasted bun and plenty of filling. I found myself delighted with the side salad as well. A light dressing, and very tasty greens. There was either a hint of fresh dill in the salad or in the crab roll. Whichever it was, it perfectly complimented the flavors. read more

On the surface, Bellwether is right up my alley - a cozy neighborhood bar/restaurant with great design and carefully-constructed menu - so my experience being kind of a letdown was a surprise. We came on a Saturday night and the place was full, but luckily a couple at the bar was just wrapping up so we were able to be seated fairly quickly. The bartenders were nice, and the drinks and food came out quickly. The space is beautifully designed, with oversized dried flower arrangements throughout, and a grand bar that serves as a centerpiece in the dining room. The feel is very comfortable, like a local watering hole that's just elevated enough to marry comfort and elegance. Unfortunately, when we were there, the music was blaring, and with a full house's worth of conversation noise it was very difficult to hear my friend even though we were sitting a foot apart at the bar. Absolutely killed the vibe. The cocktail I had was good, if surprisingly sweet - with brandy, mezcal, and angostura bitters I'd have expected it to be on the strong & smoky side, but the bartender seems to have gone hard on the honey so it was a little sugary for my taste. We ordered the burger (friend) and cassoulet (me) and that's where things rather fell apart. The burger is $14 and doesn't come with fries - those are an extra $8 - so if you're wanting a side you're looking at a $22 plate. The burger is solid, reminiscent of an old-school grill out complete with a sesame seed bun, and juicy, but it's literally just a burger. The cassoulet is $24 and consists of a sausage, matchstick-thin slices of duck salami, the requisite beans, and a handful of turnips. Mysteriously, the dish was ice cold, with the exception of the sausage; I was looking forward to a warming meal on a cold evening and chilled beans were not what I was expecting. I didn't feel that a sausage and cupful of beans was worth the price tag, like the burger. The food is good, but the New Portland prices don't seem reasonable. I really wanted to like the spot, but based on my experience I see no reason to return. read more

We came here on a Tuesday around 4:30pm, before they started to get busy. The two people working the bar were really friendly. For us, the restaurant had a very welcoming feel. We ordered the burger with a double patty ($19) and the roasted cauliflower ($15) The cauliflower was excellent. We like ordering items that we don't normally cook ourselves. This was a hit. The burger was not bad, but nothing spectacular. The patties were griddle fried, as you would find in a lot of other restaurants. After a long day, this was peaceful dinner for us. I've been here many times! I have mixed reviews. I've lived in the neighborhood for 20 years. so it's walkable and sweet. The menu changes a lot so that's cool, but don't go if it's busy. It does seem a bit like a meat market for those in their 20's and 30's so if that's your jam, that's cool, but can be loud. You have to order at the bar for everything... even if you need ketchup for your burger. The wait staff won't bring it. Everything is on the side. I think they did fix their burger because after reading the reviews I was surprised anyone would ever order one again because it was a dry burger, a bun and some lettuce and that's it. It was better last time as my friend ordered it. I had a bite. I think they added some sauce or something. They have amazing side dishes that are seasonal! That said they have great pate and I go there for that (because I'm a cook and it's not the easiest thing to make) and the toast that goes with is is really good. Don't expect good service unless they aren't busy and I would recommend ordering everything you want from the get go, or sit at the bar. Wow just wow. This place quickly became one of our new favorite finds in the Portland area, so much so that we visited twice. We came for brunch and returned for dinner (a few days later). I love the historical building it's in... big and moody, originally a pharmacy from 1912 with chill vibes and friendly faces. We sat closest to the front near a big window letting in all the sun, warming our cold skin. Shortly after sitting down we got to work and picked a fair amount of dishes and drink, including a salty lemonade which I highly recommend for my lemonade aficionados. The food was exceptional, everything we could have wanted in a Sunday brunch. I do have to say though that the bun on that burger was like a fluffy little cloud perfectly toasted on the inside and light with spring to it. Ben ended up having the burger the second time we returned and shared a few bites with me which I was more than happy to accept. The cauliflower with harissa was fragrant, mildly spicy and sweet,a crowd favorite as I was told and fully agree. Bellwether is one of those places that seem just right for their neighborhood. They inherited a great location from Caldera, the former occupant of this building, and the Bellwether folks made the very sensible decision not to change much of anything about the space. The back patio, in particular, is one of the nicest places in town to spend some time. The menu here was nicely described by my daughter as being 'high end bar food'. Their burger was a model of simplicity - a hand formed patty with lettuce and shredded cheese, and sweet pickle slices on the side. Our group of four also decided on 'a few different vegetables for the table'. While this is a sentence I'd never utter, it turned out to be perfect for this location. Judging from our table, and every other table in sight, cocktails are the way to go at Bellwether. The one that received the most praise from our group was #22, a margarita with pink peppercorns. My beer was fine, but there are more varieties of mixed drink on the menu than there are beers, so this place clearly knows their strong suit. read more
