Austin (I think that was his name) was my server and he was funny and super nice. He cracked me up calling me "honey" because he looked more like a punk rock kid than someone who'd call one honey. He was awesome at his job and I never wanted for anything--he checked in and got me whatever I needed. The pickled brined chicken with the malted waffle was quite good. I ended up eating the whole plate but that was fine because it was all I needed to eat all day. The white mocha latte was very tasty. Someone next to me had lobster bisque soup that looked so good! She said it was great. The decor was bohemian, artsy, cool. It's not far my doctor's office so I have reason to stop in again--and I certainly intend to. How did I not know about this cute, hidden gem in Mechanicsville?! My mom and I arrived for Sunday brunch right around noon. We were lucky to snag the last table as the place remained busy. We started by splitting a mimosa flight, which felt a bit pricey at $25 for what it was. To eat, I had the shrimp & grits which were really tasty. My mom got the loaded omelet and reported positively although I noticed her breakfast potatoes were overcooked. I ordered the Addison, which is a turkey and Havarti sandwich and a side order of brussel sprouts. The brussel sprouts were rave worthy. It's hard to cook them just right, but Bell Cafe did it! Everyone is looking for a cute place to share a meal this season and Bell Cafe was most accommodating for our group of 7. They have large tables in their sister store next door, Flower and Fields. There was also another group of 16 also being served in this cute environment. Irish was our server and was so very helpful. When their soup of the day sold out, she quickly came back with the options, lobster bisque or pumpkin bisque. And let me say the pumpkin was marvelous! I had mine with the grilled cheese for a light lunch. This was brilliant to use this plant-shop space for overflow seating. There were so many clippings and cute pots and lots of groovy decor. In the middle of a long drive back from the Outer Banks, we found Bell Cafe on Yelp and had a wonderful little brunch! First, I have to talk about how cute this place is! Plants are everywhere and anyone who knows me knows that is how you make me swoon. Inside, outside... plants everywhere. They also did such a wonderful job with the outside (maybe this was a Covid renovation, or maybe it's always been there) but you absolutely forget that you are in a strip mall. They've made it private and cozy with tall walls, beautiful chairs, big tables and of course, more plants. Okay now onto the food. I got the chicken salad: A very big portion of their chicken salad a top a delicious leafy summer salad. It had watermelon and nuts and a really wonderful raspberry dressing on the side. The chicken salad was HEAVY and really thick. It was good, but a lot. I couldn't come close to finishing it. My fiance got the loaded omelette and really liked it. I snagged some of his home fries and wished I had gotten a whole order of those for myself. On the way out I got a vanilla latte because I needed a caffeine boost for the next leg of the drive. We chose brunch at Bell Cafe because the weekend before I had seen a sidewalk sign boasting mimosa flights. I am glad we tried it. The flights were fabulous. Featuring each of their signature mimosas. My favorite was the Peach Melba Mimosa. My least favorite was the Creamsicle. It was tasty not hit the mimosa mark for me. Bell Cafe had only just recently popped onto my radar since I don't live in Mechanicsville. Before visiting, I was pretty set on their cinnamon roll Belgian waffle, but on arrival I was feeling savory instead. I ordered the vanilla bean latte as my drink. I was mildly bummed that they were out of the white chocolate raspberry latte listed first under specials...but only until I tried the vanilla. It was so good! We started with the spinach and artichoke hearts dip. I was surprised to see peppers lining the dish. Fortunately they didn't touch the pita or dip, or I would've had to send it back since they make me super sick. Maybe they can be added to the menu description? The dip itself was delicious. For my meal, I ordered the Addison sandwich -- oven-roasted turkey, havarti cheese, lettuce, and cranberry mayo on a grilled croissant. Oh my goodness! I made a point of emphasizing how good it was to our server. They were doing a very strong lunch service, with lots of folks seated plus many picking up takeout orders. If I visit again, I'd probably order takeout, at least during Covid, because all booths were available to sit in, and the person right behind me (who arrived after we sat down) wasn't six feet away at all. They do have hand sanitizer at the door and defer to their website for the menu, so those are pluses. All told, I enjoyed my visit and would likely order again sometime. read more

Love this cute little café in Mechanicsville! It used to be decorated shabby chic but they've modernized the place, not sure if they've changed ownership but I liked it better before. They serve terrific classic sandwiches, salads, soups, comfort food and other American fare as well as some Mediterranean choices. I've had the Monte Cristo, the chicken salad, the egg salad, the hummus platter... all tasty and with their own special touches... like pomegranate in the chicken salad. A server was cleaning the table next to us and said "I'm not sure who your server is but someone should be by soon." We waited 15 minutes. Never got a glass of water or anything. A couple was seated at the empty table next to us and a waitress came right over with water and a menu for each person! So we left. We had been there before and it was just average. Nothing special. What a great find on our cross country road trip! We saw their name and logo on one of the I-95 signs advertising food at the next exit, and we decided to take a chance on it. It compares favorably to three of our OKC breakfast/brunch favorites: Hatch, Sunnyside Diner, and Neighborhood JAM. When I see omelets on a menu, I know what I'm going to order. I chose their version of a veggie omelet. The veggies inside were cooked but not overcooked. I was skeptical about having flavored cream cheese inside, but it worked well. I'm still not a fan of cream cheese because of its mild flavor and smooth texture, but they it worked well in this omelet. For my side, I ordered the crispy brussels sprouts. WOW! Who would have thought that dropping halved brussels sprouts into the deep fryer basket would produce such a yummy treat? After I added some salt and a little pepper, they were delicious. Most of them had extra crispy outer leaves similar to kale chips. Mmmm! For my toast, I chose rye toast. I was disappointed that they did not have wheat toast. I wanted something other than white toast, so I tried the rye toast. It was a pleasant surprise to find out how well it worked with this omelet and the brussels sprouts. I'm sure they use it for their reuben sandwiches. Our server was attentive and kept our drinks topped up. We chose to eat outside on the covered patio to enjoy the warm summer weather. I was in the area for a doctors appointment, and was very hungry. I love local diners, and decided to stop by Bell Cafe. They had food that was pretty good, but at a price that knocked my socks off. The "classic breakfast" was $13; a cup of coffee was $4; it brought the total, including tip to nearly $25. The same meal at Waffle House would have been about half that. The people were nice, and the service ok, but I believe that these prices will lead to closure. It could be very successful, but it appears that their prices will be the end of it. read more

The cheddar biscuits they make from scratch are delicious and are also what they serve with the biscuits. Very nice atmosphere and the old school music they play is great too. We were in the area and decided to stop here for a late lunch. The people were nice, so I really don't want to be mean, but the problems were to numerous to not leave a review. After ordering our food, it was taking quite a bit of time before the server came back by and asked us if we ordered. He realized we had looking at his notepad, but I guess he had not put in the order so we did finally get our food after another wait, making (that he forgot) apparent. My wife got the French Toast, which she said were really so so. No hint of the vanilla flavor she said. I got the Crabcake Eggs Benedict and they were not very good at all. The Biscuit while dampened by the soggy Crab Cake, was still stale and dry. The Crab Cake itself was a soggy mess. The only thing good was that the poached eggs were done correctly. The side dish of potatoes were undercooked in the middle. I am guessing they may have been cooked from frozen because they looked nice on the outside but way underdone potatoes inside. The server asked if everything was OK, but I did not complain at the time as we had really already spent too long to wait for a redo of this forgettable meal. At 50 dollars for 2 for lunch, this should have been much, much better. I am really sorry to leave this poor review as, I believe small local restaurants deserve our patronage. The portions we received were large and in charge! I thought for sure that I'd get one biscuit split into two. Instead it was two huge biscuits as part of the portion . There's a tanginess in the Hollandaise I couldn't quite put my finger on, it was interesting. However, food was good, very filling. My husband got the biscuits and gravy and he was pleased. I was really hoping to find a good Mechanicsville brunch spot because it's such a convenient meeting spot for our family. Well, this wasn't it. We set outside and were getting attacked by bees, so many bees, like 20-30. Inside wasn't much better with flies. There was also a smell that just signaled less than clean on top of the flies and bees. We ordered the chicken biscuit, cinnamons bun waffles, pimento fritters, spinach dip, quiche, sausage and eggs. Really it was a miss on all dishes. Food was cold, soggy, and really just not good. Tasted like food that had come from the freezer, been microwaved set out for 20 minutes and then served. I visited Bell Cafe this morning, having never been for breakfast. It was very disappointing. The servers were both excellent, but the food was not only cold, but not tasty at all. I got a cup of soup and the Classic 2 eggs breakfast. I don't care for deep fried chunks of potatoes, substituting for home fries or hash browns. I asked if I could have the grits instead, which was evidently fine, but when I got the bill an up charge of $1.00 was added. I have always considered Bell Cafe as a little special, which is why I pay a little more to go there, but there was nothing special today. The eggs were not really scrambled, and the butter wouldn't melt on the one piece of barely toasted, toast. The only choice of jellies was between grape and strawberry. 2 eggs, meat, 1 piece of toast and deep fried chunks of potatoes is on the menu for $13.00. The soup was on the menu for $6.99, but on the check it was $7.00. It's not the penny or the dollar that bothers me, it's just so unproffesional. Lastly, the menu I received when I was there, did not have many of the dishes that I just saw on Yelp. It had 2 or 3 omelettes, 3 benedicts, I did not see any benedicts with ham or sausage. I did not see biscuits and sausage gravy except on the ala carte section, and never saw bagels, which I was really wanting, What menu did I get? I kept the menu long after ordering, because I wanted to examine it. I was so surprised that there weren't more options. Reading and rereading the menu on line, I just can't believe I missed so much. I don't believe I got the same menu that is online??? I'm so confused. I paid 22 dollars and change for 2 eggs, 2 tiny pieces of bacon, 1 piece of patty sausage, and one piece of toast, with a cup of soup that was unlike any lobster bisue, I've ever had (my computer isn't allowing me to spell that correctly.) It looked and tasted more like butternut suash soup (again, computer is not allowing me to spell that correctly.) Again, the servers were so pleasant. The outdoor seating was very pleasant, and all the food I saw on other tables looked pretty good. I think I will stick with lunch if I ever return, which is doubtful. Thanks to our present president, prices are through the roof. I do understand, but something was just not right today. If anyone can explain it to me, it would be greatly appreciated.
