I've been using Behrens for twenty years and there's nothing like this family owned and operated Pharmacy. They know who I am and what troubles I've had in the past. They call when I have a prescription I need to pick up. They take care of their customers, there's always a smile and a "How are you doing today?"-welcome, and they're honestly concerned and caring attitude isn't fake. They really care for their neighbors. If you have a concern or a question about a medication they take the time to explain and make sure you understand. I've had to use other pharmacies like CVS, Walgreens and the difference between dealing with a family business and corporate monolithic company is that you're known and the pharmacists are more than pill pushers. read more

Behrens is a great, caring organized and friendly pharmacy. I've lived here 50 years, since 1971. The place was owned by (presumably) the Behrens family then, and their current successors - who have been here for years and years - know their neighbors and are concerned about their health and care. A perfect pharmacy. Very nice people, and you will directly support a family not a huge business like walgreens. And unlike walgreens you will never have to wait for super long times and have issues like having a medication not be filled even if you called it in. Such a great pharmacy! read more

I can't explain why I love this place, but I do. OK, no, actually I can explain. 1. It's all old-timey and stuff, both the facade and the interior. Piles of random drugstore stock on ancient displays in narrow aisles. This place is a throwback to something from a Norman Rockwell painting. 2. It smells really good in there. 3. They guys who run the place are incredibly nice. Seriously, walking into this place is like stepping back to a time where people actually talked to each other. They will tell you what kind of cold medicine you should get, help you find the best moisturizer, hand you a box of tampons without looking at you all weird, etc etc etc. 4. In keeping with the old timey vibe, they do everything by hand. Handwritten pricetags. Math done in their head to calculate the tax and your change. Those mega-old school accounting books where they tally each sale. They don't even have a calculator. 5. Every summer, their daughter/niece/cousin comes in from pharmacy school to work. Man do I have a crush on her... Which I feel really bad about, because she is obviously very straight and working in Uncle's shop for the summer, and it just seems wrong in this Main Street USA landscape to have a crush on the pharmacists' daughter. read more

I have a soft spot for any establishment in our neighborhood that is not a big box store.I love supporting anyone and anything that is homegrown and local. Behrens is amonst those places and the folks that run it are TOP NOTCH. Love this pharmacy! It has such an old school feel. The man in the front is very polite, the pharmacist is a bit grumpy but knows his medicines! Although the rows are cluttered and I stronglu believe the store should undergo some form of remodeling they always seem to have the product and merchandise that will make you say "I remember mom used to use that for me!" read more

The kind of neighborhood pharmacy that is being swallowed up by chain stores. Don't expect wide aisles and vast selections, but they've managed to cram almost everything you'll ever need into a compact space. The gems, however, are the two men who work the counter and fill the prescriptions. They bend over backwards to help their customers, and you can trust their recommendations. I love this place. Our family uses it a huge amount, and Kuna and his staff are the best. They listen, they will take phone orders, they call you to let you know medicine is in, they dispense advice on insurance issues. They have been there nearly 40 years - incredible. I've been using Behren's for about a year now, and they are great. Decent selection for a small store, and very friendly, helpful, knowledgeable staff. Prices are OK, not the best, but not the worst. They make it easy to refill prescriptions over the phone and are always friendly and welcoming. read more

Proof why "Mom and Pop" stores should be patronized and protected from commercial extinction. First, the service is personable. The gentlemen who work (and own?) the shop are real people, not cookie-cutter pharmacists in white lab coats. Second, the shop is small but seems to have just what you need. Twenty kinds of cold medicine and they will help you choose which one. They also carry organic or earth-friendly products like J-A-S-O-N body soaps, and the price is just as good as other big stores. They won me over forever when, at Hanukkah, I could not find any candles for my menorah. I searched all of Fort Greene to no avail. Berhens said they used to carry but not anymore because of low-demand. But...I passed by the next day for something else, and the gentleman who helped me the day before said "Oh, I have something for you." and he took out a box of candles and gave them to me. Apparently, Chabbad had been in the area that morning and was giving out free Hanukah candles to local stores. I like to think of this Behrens moment as my own personal Hanukkah miracle! read more

Yesterday my new evil health insurance company told me it was mandatory that I get my prescriptions by mail. I did not want to abandon Behrens! It's actually illegal to force someone to use mail order (where they save money because they use robots not people, not kidding). When I called back, I was sent up the food chain because I used the word "illegal" and they relented. Please stay with our local independent pharmacy! read more

The pharmacist at Behrens Pharmacy is immoral. Do not come to this local pharmacy expecting the care of a friendly neighborhood pharmacy. When I came here to get a prescription filled--which I urgently needed because I would be traveling the next day--the pharmacy refused to fill it, unless I paid an extra $30 on top of the $10 copay I owed. The pharmacist was rude and unprofessional, as was the man who manned the cash register, shouting at me and demanding the bogus fee. These people line their own pockets at the expense of patients. I had never experienced anything like it. I pay nearly $500 a month for health insurance, and my prescription is covered under the insurance plan with a $10 copay. I have never had a pharmacist demand extra cash--above and beyond the copay--to fill a prescription. It is reprehensible. To make things even worse, the pharmacist offered to remove the bogus fee if I transferred more prescriptions to the pharmacy. I didn't have any other prescriptions, so then she rescinded her offer to remove the bogus fee. In other words, I didn't have enough ailments for her to make money off of my health problems. Repulsive. Stay away from this place. I recommend nearby Myrtle Pharmacy, which has never tried to extort me like Behrens. read more
