To my dismay, my termite/pest control company informed me I had a honey bee hive in my house. Since honey bees are endangered in Hawaii and thus, they shouldn't be killed, I was told to contract a local bee keeper. Since 2016, seven bee species native to Hawaii are now protected under the Endangered Species Act. The first Oahu bee keeper website that caught my eye was https://www.beelievehawaii.com

Their website wonderfully emphasized education, conservation, habitat restoration of Hawaii's native honey bees. I was "quickly/easily" able to contact owner Jasmine and make an appointment for site visit and estimate for bee removal and relocation. There is a fee for this site visit/total job estimate. Additionally, overall cost of the extraction, wall patch up, clean-up, and relocation of the hive to a bee farm is reasonable in my opinion.

As soon as Jasmine arrived, she assessed the point of entry of the bees. After entering my house, Jasmine pointed an infrared device toward the point of entry of the bees and showed me the bee's heat mass (bright red blob). The bees successfully entered through my tile roof and found a hole leading to the space between the outside and inside walls. They started building their hive on the studs. My heart sank since the area was on the large/high back wall of my living room.

Jasmine explained the method she uses to extract and relocate the honey bees with her partner Elko (an active working professional in building construction). Basically, through the interior of the house, Elko will cut through the wall directly leading to the bee hive. Then both he and Jasmine (fully dressed in bee suits) will carefully remove the hives, place the hives in a bee hive box, look for the queen bee, gather the stray bees, clean-up the worksite, and patch up the wall (which will require resurfacing and painting on your own). Once they find the queen, they place the queen in a queen cage which encourages the rest of the bees to follow. They use a custom designed bee vacuum that gently vacuums the stray bees and places them in a small bin used in the relocation to a bee farm. Per Jasmine, bee nests in homes are a very common problem in Hawaii. Killing the bees inside the walls and sealing the walls may introduce other pest issues attracted to the dead insects and honey.

When Jasmine and Elko came to my house, they professionally preformed the job as Jasmine described. My entire job took around 2+ hours. NOTE: If the bee hive location (from the home interior view) has higher windows above the bee hive location, make sure to ask about high extension ladders that Jasmine and Elko will need to vacuum any bee stragglers attracted to the sunlight coming in through the windows. To set your expectations, also ask how they (1) plan to contain the bees once the wall to the bee hive is removed during the extraction process, (2) the waxy yellow bee "poop" left by surprised/scared bees (a smoke will be used to calm the bees as much as possible), and (3) remaining bees outside that couldn't be collected.

I highly recommend Beelieve Hawaii for any bee extraction work you need. Jasmine and Elko are wonderful professionals who love their job and are seriously committed to the conversation of Hawaii's honey bees. These bees are essential to retain Hawaii's plant/food supply and are now protected under the Endangered Species Act--it is unlawful to kill them. read more
