Elgin needed a "real" hot dog/beef place for a long time. For Dogs and fries, the Beef Shack is reminiscent of the great places in Chicago like Gene and Judes. For cheezy Beefs they blow away Portillios with all their plastic food. The reason there are no Portillos in Chicago is that with all the great Dog/Beef places no one would go to a Portillios For those with issues, give the Beef Shack some time to work out the issues. We have no complaints about the quality of the food or the staff; both were excellent. However, the prices here seem quite high: $6-8 for JUST a beef sandwich without a side or a drink is quite steep. They might have a hard time competing with the numerous similar businesses in this area if their prices remain high. read more

My husband and I live nearby and anticipated the opening. We've been there FIVE times now and EVERY single time the order has been wrong and screwed up. I agree with other reviewers that the fries should be included and the amount of fries are much less than the other stores. The fresh cut fries with the skins on them are awesome. Even the mini order gives you plenty of fries. The Chicago style hot dog is a true Vienna Beef hot dog and is very tasty. The beef sandwich is packed with beef. Delicious for the price. Stopped in for lunch. The staff was friendly and helpful. I ordered a burger and fries. The hand cut fries are better than any fries I've ever had before. Beef Shack? More like Trashy-Shack! Ordered 2 cheesy beefs on garlic, and a large cheese fry. The place had 9 unenthusiastic looking employees for every customer in sight. Where do I start? The fries were luke warm by the time I got home 2 minutes away. The beef was slightly above average at best, however the bread was hard and on the verge of going stale. The garlic had a weird fishy taste to it. To top it off, the cheese sauce had the viscosity of a cup of cheese-flavored water. It may as well have come from the soda fountain. GROSS! Some kid had to have noticed when pouring the cheese and just said "F*** it! i'll still serve it!" I paid $20 for this meal and the only thing I got from it was 6/10 tasting beef on practically stale bread and a belly ache. Will never be returning to this location again. read more

They've been open long enough to get their drive thru system in order. After I ordered, the girl at the window proceeded to ramble off 3 orders that were not my order. Even after I repeated twice what my order was. I then proceeded to sit there waiting for 20 mins. When I got my order, it was incorrect. Have been there about three times since they opened to see if things have improved. I found their cheesy garlic beef to be slimy and dripping in some sort of garlic butter goo and the sandwich has a funky almost sour taste to it. The prices are high for what it is and the wait time both inside and at the drive thru are always very long. Aside from the cheesy garlic beef I've had the fries which were ok and the hot dog which was average. I haven't tried their hamburgers and most likely won't since Portillos is only a few minutes away so there's really no reason for me to go back. Here is the sandwich I was sold today. (I took my wife to Beef Shack because she enjoyed the fries we purchased several times the past few months.) I ordered a pepper sandwich, which was supposed to be a beef size sandwich with just sweet peppers. The person working the counter wasn't sure what to charge me for the sandwich. He used his ear piece and asked ....What do I enter on the computer? I did not hear what was said. I got my bill paid it and went to a table and started my experience. I was charged for a beef sandwich ($6.50). When I opened the sandwich I was surprised to see what is pictured here. Here is what you can get at the beef shack. The fries my wife enjoyed in the past???..The ones we received here were fries that were either refried or left to sit under a warming light for an extensive time and were warm at best and rubbery. I had lunch today with my 3 yr old and found the menu, pricing and serving size to be on par if not better than any other local beef joint. A good beef but the thing i LOVED was the grilled cheese! I ordered 4 beefs a few weeks back. They seemed a bit on the salty side ( which I didn't mind ) but the big disappointment was the Giardiniera. It tasted like something cheap off the shelf from Aldi. Very bland. I would have loved to have more cheese on the "cheesy beef" as well. It wasn't exciting and just lacked a "wow" factor I was hoping for. It should just be called a beef with some cheese on it. Just okay, honestly. The salad was decent but not even on the same level as Portillo's. Cheesy bread was good, I liked it but it was literally just cheese melted on bread. I have lived in town since 2002. I am a foodie and really 'get into' the whole dining/food experience. The options in the area for an acceptable beef, Italian style or otherwise is truly SAD. I have tried Beef Villa, Italian Dreams and many others over the years and have been somewhere between disappointed-to-disgusted every time. You might be asking "so o.k. what do you consider a good beef?" Well, I was born in Chicago and I am half Sicilian...I grew up thinking cooking and good food a religion in itself. The high-bar standard of beef for me is Johnnies Beef, AL's Italian Beef, Carm's and in the far west [Dekalb/N.I.U] Tom & Jerry's. Portillo's for me personally is the minimum grade/standard of beef I will ingest, its ok but I will not go out of my way for it especially of one of the other places is a viable option. This location is 5 minutes from my house and just opened I believe less than 2 weeks ago. This is my unbiased initial review. Most of us will like to keep lunch at/less than $10. Today on my 1st visit i ordered the standard 'full size' beef sandwich juicy with motz cheese, order of fires [one size] and fountain drink [also one size offered]. Price before tax was $11.90. This store is new so the outside looked great. Upon entering the inside looked clean though due to it being 12:17 p.m. on a week day it was busy and a few vacant tables could have been wiped down. The Order-girl/Halie was pleasant. The wait from order time to ready was less than 15 minutes. I got the impression a few folks waiting for both eat-in and take out were growing impatient because they were grumbling/moaning about the wait both to themselves and to anyone within eye/earshot. OK we all want fast food fast but lets give them a few weeks to get their legs under them and staff trained and prepared for the 'rush times'... Eat-in as well as take out is presented in the same packaging/bag. The order was correct, the food was hot and while I was waiting i served my own Diet coke that was mixed strong enough that it almost tasted like regular which I like because most places thin it out to the point is is awful. The regular/full size beef is HUGE and their version of 'juicy' is the same as what I expect so points there...not too dry and not a soggy mess of goop either. Beef and juice was very good though it could use a bit more Italian seasoning in my opinion. I left in a near food-coma state so I will try the Mini size offered next time that is about half the price. The hot peppers are truly HOT so if you are use to the more 'mild' hot peppers most beef places offer you may want them on the side. The fries came in one size and are reasonably priced [@2.25] they are skin-on thin cut fries that many of you will call 'over-cooked' that are use to they regular fast-food fries like Portillo's or the golden arches. I would more accurately say they are crispy fries similar to those at Gene 'n Jude's out in River Grove. For .50 you can buy 'shack sauce' that was explained as a sweet 'n tangy ketchup based sauce they make...well I'm not paying extra for something 'like' ketchup so I declined...here is a tip: if you wanna get folks hooked on something give it out for free then charge them down the road. Fifty-cents is not gonna make/break a company so just give it out?... Ketchup is free though so thats what I used. Free self-service soda refills. Bathroom was clean and well stocked. air dryer [dont like them]...they need to offer towels so us germ-freaks can use it to open the door and not get infected from all the slobs who dont wash after #1 & #2 that touch the door handle...YUK! See it all the time. BOTTOM LINE: A few areas of improvement but a solid option for quality fast-food. I will be returning to sample other menu items, more reviews and to see if they are reading our critiques and making improvements. CHEERS! read more

Beef Shack route 20 elgin 1st experience: Walked into a Smoke filled place to the point of needing the fire department and eyes watering. Horrible 1st impression . And then they tell me AFTER WAITING IN LINE they are out of beef! Yep no beef- 7:08 pm on a Thursday and no beef! The No Beef Shack!! Now I'm all in on giving a new place some lee way. But come on.. no Beef!! Seriously, a mildly intelligent manager would recognize they were getting low at least a few hours early and reach out to st charles or HE locations and have them rush it over right? Isn't the beef frozen anyway that they could have had enough supplies to just thaw out an extra case or two? I'll give these guys one more shot and if it's it's remotely this bad of an experience I'll not only never go there again, I will happily tell the joke of a true story I witnessed tonight. I really don't think I'm being harsh here as this could have so easily been solved with an ounce of thought!! Maybe I'm oversimplifying things???? What do you think?? read more

For those of you that were like me and spent a lot of time waiting in line at Beef Shack Elgin, I am writing this post for you. I had about given up on Beef Shack however the last two months I've noticed a change. That change is the new management, specifically Daren, who has come in to turn the place around. Mario also goes above and beyond to make sure the orders are hot, fresh and correct. The wait times have decreased, the food quality has increased and I've definitely noticed a change! I highly recommend the grilled chicken sandwich and fresh burger. So give Beef Shack another chance and see the change. read more

I just went to the new beef shack in Elgin and ordered a hot dog and it didn't come with fries. The St. Charles store sells hot dogs with fries for $3.15 but the Elgin store sells a dog for $3.00 but fries are sold separately for $1.99. Such a deal. I will never go to the Elgin store. If you're going to franchise you need to be consistent with all of the stores. read more

For starters, order girl/jasmine was very rude and unwelcoming.. Fries were very soggy and oily/greasy. Don't get the cheese sauce, it didnt taste like cheese. I want to start with saying the staff at this location was very friendly and accommodating. They get five stars in my book. This was my first and last visit to a Beef Shack . I ordered a beef sandwich. Overall the beef was very salty, and you could tell it wasn't homemade like most other beef places. The bread was way too heavy and doughy.
