The outside of the restaurant is not what I expected for a local burger place, very cool look with brick and wood. It was noon on Friday and they were busy, but the line at the counter moved quickly. The gentleman that took our order was very friendly and welcoming. We both ordered the bacon cheeseburger meals. The total was about $24. Our food came out pretty quickly and the fries were hot and fresh. The bacon cheeseburgers were hot and fresh and had good flavor. Local to Rockford area, beef a roo is a local chain. Of all the times that I have been in Rockford, this was my first visit. I would describe it as a cross between Burger King and Culvers. Man, my boy Dylan on YouTube reviewed Beef a Roo a couple weeks back and me and hubby decided to stop by this one in Rockford about 2pm on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. First- man. This place was BUSY. A beautiful building, and the team quickly welcomed us. We took the 2 for $7 special and got 2 Roast Beef Sandwiches, 2pcs of chicken tenders, a small fry, and we shared a Wild West Roast Beef. Man. Ok- first off was the fries. Fresh, hot, just the right amount of "crispy crunch". And the fry sauce was pretty nice. Next up? We were comparing the Roast Beefs to Arbys, the almost extinct Rax, and of course Beef-a-Roo. Man. Beefy. Better than Arby's! On par with Rax and definitely meaty! The chicken tenders were hot, moist, and tasty. Definitely worthy of another order (next time!). We had them split the Wild West Roast Beef - it was pretty good. But to be honest I'd stay with just the Roast Beef next time :) So- how is it? The parking is very plentiful and convenient with multiple handicap spaces right near the door. There are table and chairs or booths of multiple sizes both indoors and outdoors to choose from, they are all pretty close together however. All the people we came in contact with who were working behind the service counter were very friendly and efficient. Our food was prepared very quickly. The food was pretty ordinary for a sandwich place except the onion rings had sort of a burnt or not so fresh oil flavor. One of the sandwiches was ordered with no tomatoes yet there were 3 tomato slices on the sandwich it wasn't a big deal it was just removed however if something is ordered a certain way that is the way it should be served. I have a serious issue with Beef-A-Roo. For years I'd heard my in laws rave about this place; and all I could think was "it sounds like Hamburger Helper made a restaurant". Here I am a decade later, living in Rockford. And I have a problem. As in, I can't stop wanting a double beef and cheese curds. They have a few healthful options, such as the mahi and steamed vegetables. Prices are reasonable for the quality and portions. The burger was so full of grease that you couldn't taste the burger. The fries were soggy, and the grilled cheese wasn't grilled cheese. The cheese wasn't melted, and the bread was hard as a rock. However, I am extremely disappointed at how small and expensive the pumpkin bars are this year, They are one of my favorite fall foods and the 2 times that I have gotten them this year, they have been an epic disappointment. I have been a huge Beef A Roo fan from the beginning but I'm concerned that the new owners are so focused on expansion that they forgot who made the company what it is. As an example, my wife has been eating their Santa Fe Chicken salad for years. A couple of months ago the corn on her salad was so ladened with cayenne that she couldn't eat it. I messaged the company and asked if their recipe for this item had changed - no complaint, just asking the question. I did not hear from them so a couple of weeks later I sent the same message and said this is my second request for information. Two months later and still no response. Was in town from Chicago and stopped at beef a roo. I had the halibut sandwich which was amazing. They brought it out hot loved the horseradish sauce and that it had spring mix salad. I also had the sweet potato waffle fries which were hot and had just enough salt and seasonings. Took super long to give me my food, had to wait like 5-7 minutes next to the trash can in the drive through waiting for my food. Usually doesn't take that long so I was confused what was going on. The shake was alright, the cheese fries had too little cheese usually it has more cheese. I had to basically dig inside my fries to find some cheese. I thought this place might be good when I saw the long drive up window line at lunch. And the guy I was with said people calling into a radio show said it was the best beef sandwich around. So we decided to give it a try. Well I should have known when I ordered a beef sandwich 'dry' and the cashier had no idea what I was talking about, that I was probably at the wrong beef sandwich place. Then when the sandwich was delivered to our table on a hamburger bun instead of a french roll, and looked like sliced cold cuts, I was tempted to just pitch it in the garbage and skip lunch. You see I worked at a beef place in high school. We cooked beef roasts, sliced them on a meat slicer, added spices and juice and served them hot. THAT was a beef sandwich. PORTILLO's has a real beef sandwich. MR. BEEF has a real beef sandwich. Arby's and Beef-A-Rooni have beef loaf! If I wanted processed lunch meat I would have gone to the grocery store deli. My friend and I were totally confused by the popularity of the place and said it must be because the rest of the food was great. From what we could see on other people's plates, it looked like their non-beef meals were good. Which confused us even more seeing as the name of the place has the word BEEF right in it. The place is clean, well decorated. And the cashier came by each table with a basket of melt-a-ways and peppermint hard candy and said, "Are we enjoying our meal? Would you like a mint or peppermint?" So it's not like it's not a nice place to visit, atmosphere wise. Beef-a-roo, even though it is a fast food restaurant, it's not one you find all over the country. I remember growing up and loving this place. As I got older, I didn't love it as much as I preferred a more complex meal or burger. What I will tell you is that they are on the same level as some of these gourmet burger establishments. My favorites here are their Bacon Cheeseburger, Western Cheeseburger, and Olive Burger. There cheese fries are good, but it's just regular fries with liquid cheese slathered on top. The key to them is the special seasoned salt they use. I like their onion rings as well, and I think they have the best out of any fast food restaurants I've been to. I also like their Sante Fe Chicken Salad with the Southwest ranch dressing. I tried their fat free dressing once and it was unappetizing. It was like fat free mayo, with even less flavor. BLEH This location is generally pretty clean and service is good for a fast food restaurant. Since they do make everything when you order it, there can be a wait from the time you order until the time you get it. The drive through does move reasonably quick. read more

Tonight was the final straw as I ordered a roast beef sandwich that used to come with delicious slices of beef, was essentially all the tiny shavings that fell of the slicer (I hope) but more like just prepackaged mush. 42 years of enjoyment has come to an and as it now seems to be just another corporate pink slime factory. The cheese fries (which come with very little cheese anymore) are even nowhere near as good. Just another "raise prices, cut costs, feed the shareholders." Damn shame. read more

Very nice building and huge seating area. I tried the large beef sandwich and it reminded me of Arby's. Nothing special, but average roast beef. The fries are similar to McDonald's fries; the long string fries. Service was good. They give you a free Andes mint with each meal. read more

Beautiful building. The name does not match the decor, but I do love Beef a Roo! The spicy turkey sandwich is the best sandwich around, with a generous helping of avocado, not common anymore. I love the sweet potato fries too, they are hard to cook correctly, but Beef a Roo gets them right every time. I only wish their kids meals were a package deal, but the food is so tasty I will go back every time I'm in Rockford. read more

My favorite fast food. I go everytime I'm in Rockford, and am never disappointed. They have the best fast food fries, hands down. The special seasoning salt is delicious, but honestly, the fries are great on their own. My favorite is the Jr beef with a small fry and a side cup of cheddar. This would probably be my final meal if I didn't enjoy steak and mashed potatoes so much. The drive-thru wait is sometimes 4-5 minutes, but that is always followed by FRESH fries. I've even gotten a coupon for a free drink or fries when they asked me wait for my food. They also have a lot of options for vegetarians, including lots of veggies on the sandwiches and the option of a boca burger. Try it out if you're in the area and looking for a fast meal. read more
