Texas Honey Bee Farm

One of our friends surprised us with a bee tour because he knows how much my wife loves bees. The…read morestaff was very accommodating to our schedules. It's not recommended to go on the tour when it's raining, and when it's too hot or cold outside. We had to reschedule twice due to weather but we finally made it out there and it was a lot of fun learning about bees, their importance to the world and seeing them up close. We all enjoyed the hands on experience being in the bee hits offered us! Standing in the middle of bees flying around, not angrily, and see how they work together was breathtaking. Becky, one of the staff members, scheduled our tour and led our honey taste testing. She was the sweetest lady and took the time to learn all of our names. Becky's husband, Jesus, led our bee tour and answered all of our many questions. He was very kind, knowledgeable and patient when addressing our questions. If you are looking for a fun experience you need to come out here and do the tour!!!

My stop at Texas Honey Bee Farm today was done mostly out of curiosity when I spied some small…read moresigns along the roadside. Expectations were low. After all, this place is out in the country and, although not too far off of Hwy 71, it is secluded and kind of remote (probably seems more remote than it actually is). It was, however, a delightful surprise! The shop had a wide variety of bee-related items from tools and clothing for serious bee keepers to honeys and honey-sweetened candies to bee-themed household goods. So cute!! We were treated to a honey tasting, which (like wines) started with the lighter colored and flavored honey (a local honey) up to the darker honeys, then we veered off and were sampling cinnamon honey (think Red Hots + honey), coffee and chocolate flavored, and (my favorite) chili-infused honey. Cannot wait to try this drizzled over some soft cheese. I don't know how I got out with only the few items I purchased (photos below), so I'll have to go back. Many of the items would make great gifts (I'm thinking of those coffee mugs: Let it Bee; Bee Happy; and my favorite: Give Bees a Chance. Tours are also offered but must be scheduled in advance, a down side of spur-of-the-moment exploring. I'll be sure to do that next time, when I'm back to purchase gifts.

Came here to do their bee hive tour. The tour starts with an indoor informative session where you…read morelearn about the life cycle of bees. Then you put on protective gear and get to see a hive up close, and even get to taste a bit of honey from the hive. Tours are small and capped at 12 people, making them intimate and giving you the chance to get as up close to the hive as you want. The instructors are friendly and very knowledgeable. One aspect that could be improved is the quality of the protective gear. The suits have holes -- some have already been patched, and some still need to be fixed. Noticing some of these unpatched holes in my suit made me feel slightly less protected.

I booked a honey farm tour at Two Hives Honey Farm. Carla was our instructor and she did an amazing…read morejob at explaining the origins on honey bees, their life cycle, and the important role they play in our environment. We bee-suited up and were given a hands on tour of one of their many beehives. Carla made sure that everyone in our small group was properly suited up. I felt completely safe the entire time. In fact, all the gentle buzzing around me was quite relaxing! We saw all the various components that make up a hive and even saw a bee being born! The entire experience was so special, to be able to see bees so up close and personal and learn about such complex creatures. We even sampled a bit of fresh honey straight off the comb. It was delicious! After our hive tour, we picked up our pre-purchased honey fight which had samples of various honeys harvested on the farm. I'm already looking into attending another one of their classes and can't wait to come back!

Gretchen Bee Ranch - Buy yourself some bees wax!

In addition to offering…read morevarious in-person classes for new beekeepers or those just interested in bees, they host an almost weekly (Saturday mornings) FaceBook live broadcast where Mark goes over relevant topics. The equipment portion of the store is very well stocked and has pretty much anything a beekeeper could need (or want) at reasonable prices. The wax/honey/product portion of the store always has unique one-of-a kind items as well as the 'typical' items that folks regularly buy (i.e. honey, beeswax, candles, etc.). Though the store is usually always busy, Mark, Thien and other staff are never too busy to answer questions from customers. They also respond (amazingly quickly - far better than I think I would be) to emails with questions from beekeepers. They have queens (unmarked early on and marked later) available for re-queening each year, which is really great because re-queening is a regular part of beekeeping and being able to obtain them locally is great. Aside from being helpful at the store and in answering questions, everyone at Gretchen's Bee Ranch are just good people - people you'd want to be friends with even if you weren't customers. If you've never stopped buy, check this place out. If you are a beekeeper anywhere near Seguin, this is the place to come for all of your apiary needs. If you just want to learn more about bees, there is probably a class (either a limited in-person one, an on-line one or a no-limit in-person one) for you!

My family and I went to Dos Olivos Market for dinner. My husband made a reservation but we really…read moredidn't need it. We walked in, told the person at the front our name and were seated quickly. The restaurant is nice. It includes a little market in one section with various food items that you can purchase. There is also a seating area with couches near the market section. The restaurant has different sized tables for seating. Not long after being seated we were greeted by a waiter that did an excellent job taking care of us the entire time we were there. He took our drink order, gave us menus and some time to decide what we wanted. After a few minutes he brought us our waters and took our order. We ordered several items. El Olivo which is a garlic bread. It was okay. The bread was good. It was nice and warm and the garlic flavor was all on top. Whipped Feta which comes with grilled Naan and cucumber slices. The Naan was okay. It was a little cold and needed to be warmed up a little more for my liking but my kids ate it up. The cucumbers were fresh and crisp and the whipped feta was pretty good. It had a slight lemon flavor but not enough to where you could taste the lemon with every bite. Pork belly chicharron which had pork with avacado covered in a sauce. It came with tortilla chips. The tortilla chips were thick and crispy. Perfect for scooping up some of the pork belly. The pork belly was delicious. The sauce that covered it added flavor and the avacado was fresh. The Lamb chops came with Lamb, carrots and a puree. The lamb itself was excellent. It was cooked perfectly and was tender with each bite. The carrots were slightly sweet and the puree was soft. It was a good mix of different textures with each bite. The Truffle mac and cheese was a macaroni and cheese with chives and truffle flavor. This was very tasty. The macaroni was tender, the chives were spread out and added that slight onion flavor. The cheese was very flavorful. One of my kids ate almost all of this. Barbacoa Doughnuts which are mini doughnuts filled with barbacoa topped with a salsa. I don't really like barbacoa but I tried them and was pleasantly surprised. These were delicious. It was basically a soft and warm mini doughnut filled with flavorful barbacoa. The sauce on it added a slight spicy flavor. Patatas Bravas are potatoes with salsa and a garlic aioli sauce. These were very tasty. That salsa and aioli sauce are what gave this dish all of its yummy flavor. The potatoes had a crispy exterior with a soft interior. All of the ingredients mixed together made a very good side dish. One of my sons ordered the Dos Olivos Burger with Tater Tots. He said that the burger was okay. I tried it and I agreed. The tater tots were good. He ate those up with some ketchup. My other son ordered the Fried Chicken Sandwiches with everything on the side. He substituted a salad instead of the fries. He ate the salad up. He also ate the Fried chicken from the sandwich. He said it was good. He is not a fan of sesame seed bread so he opted not to eat the bun. I tried the red cabbage apple slaw that it comes with and it was okay. Lastly I ordered the Beet Salad which comes with beets, pears, and candied pecans. I don't usually eat beets but I wanted to try it. It was very good. The beet chunks were large and soft but not overly soft. The pears and the candied pecans added a crispier texture and the mixture of all of the ingredients along with the sauce that was on it made this a super sweet beet salad. Almost like a dessert. It was delicious. Overall the restaurant is a cool spot to visit. The market is a neat addition that adds to the ambiance of the restaurant. The service was excellent and the food was delicious.
