Beaver Tails is a Canadian classic; and a delicious one at that! There are two locations in Banff only a block from each other, yet the line is out the door for both locations at all times. After a 10 minute or so wait, we finally got our orders. The beavertails are a long and flat fried dough pastry that is shaped like a beavertail, thus the name. Each of them are covered with various toppings and is a delicious dessert. If you are having trouble deciding what flavor you want, you can pick two. We opted for half Avalanche (cheesecake spread, Skor bits, and caramel sauce) and half Coco Vanil' (vanilla icing, crushed Oreo cookies, and chocolate sauce) for $8 CAD. Although very sweet, the beavertail was delicious especially with the flavors. I would definitely get the Avalanche beavertail again! In addition, we ordered the Poutine ($8.50 CAD) as well and this was a huge hit! The fries were super crisp with the perfect amount of gravy and cheese curds. Wholly Smokes! I was already stuffed from dinner but had to have a beaver tail before we headed home! We just got the simple original and some butterscotch ice cream! After staying in line for about 10 minutes we finally got our BeaverTails we got the strawberry cheesecake and the bananarama. So so delicious but also so sweet it's kind of just like a fried donut..? I don't really know how to explain it. I think it's some thing that everybody should try at least once. they definitely don't have these out in the USA at least not where I'm from! Worth the hype in our opinion. We stopped here two nights in a row! You can do half and half on one piece of bread. Mehple & Avalanche were my favorites. My friend loved the Oreo one. It is a dessert spot that originates from Ottawa. I absolutely loved Beavertails when I tried it during a past trip to Ottawa. I was thrilled that there were two locations in the town of Banff. A Beavertail starts with a fried piece of dough that is shaped like [you guessed it] a beavertail. The dough is chewy and crispy. Then, additional sweet paste and toppings [the selected flavor(s)] are put on top of it. I ordered a Beavertail with a half hazelnut & banana and the other half oreo. It is basically your pick of sugar placed on top of more sugar. It tastes as good as it sounds and looks. On the other hand, it can be a bit messy. This is the better location of the two within Banff. Line moves faster and it's better cared for. I'd suggest skipping the $3 scoop of ice cream and just having one with cinnamon sugar, as they best highlight the star of the show which is the beaver tail itself. BeaverTails is such a great pastry store. I love it here and the there are so many options to choose from. They have delicious beverage and gourmet desserts which are hand-crafted in front of you. The pastries and ice creams are very customizable. This particular location is very nice and clean. It was practically spotless and the service was very nice and efficient. Furthermore, the decor was on-point and was definitely appealing. It served for some great photos. The pastries and drinks we ordered were spectacular. It is definitely on the sweet side but as for BeaverTails go, it is definitely one I would place very high on my list. We ordered a "brWOWnie" which had a hazelnut spread and brownie chunks along with a Vegan Pecan Pie BeaverTail. They were both incredibly delicious and I would recommend either flavour. Moreover, the playful names are very much appreciated and wonderfully punny. The ice cream options they serve is also very good and the beverages are quite nice as well. Our orders were created efficiently and with care by a kind employee. The service was very effective. I did not come across any problems in this aspect, I found it quite nice. There are no seating arrangements in the store. Be ready to grab and go. There is another location that is very close by with an outdoor table. Beaver Tails :) Where to begin this love story? After a day of checking out Peyto Lake and Lake Moraine (it was snowing), we were ready for some dinner. We had a party of 7 and where we wanted to eat needed some time to get our table ready so on the way to a bar.....a delish aroma of sugary sweetness was in the air.....I just followed my noise and it took me right to Beaver Tails doorstep. I opted for #1 - Cinnamon Sugar and it came out hot and soft and OH SO FREAKING DELICIOUS!!! It was like churro flat bread and it was devoured in mere minutes. The story does not end there. Beaver Tails closes at 10pm and as we sat down for dinner at 9pm, my mind kept wandering back to Beaver Tail fantasies. If you've never had a beaver tail before, you need to try it! They are these flat fried dough (shaped like a beaver tail hence the name) that you can cover in sugar and/or cinnamon, top with hazelnut spread, fruits, cookies and cream, etc. They come hot and fresh from the kitchen and you can choose the toppings. So Beaver Tails are apparently a "Canadian dessert" but really in western Canada the only place I know that has beaver tails is here in Banff and a spot at Lonsdale Quay Market in Vancouver. I'm from Edmonton and I really wish there was a place to get them here (like someone in West Edmonton Mall could open a Beaver Tails shop). Anyway if I want a beaver tail I gotta go about 400km southwest to Banff. Not that my friends and I went to Banff just for one of these beaver tails (that would be insane), but they were a nice treat to get while we were here. This is a takeaway kind of place (you get your order and go, there's no seating here). A beaver tail is just a piece of fried dough covered in toppings. You could go basic with just cinnamon sugar or you can go all out. I got one with hazelnut spread, peanut butter, and Reese's pieces. Considering it'll be a while before my next beaver tail it was well worth it. This place is pretty touristy and gets busy, but my friends and I didn't have to wait too long for our treats. They are a bit expensive, but for the novelty factor it's fun to have a beaver tail, especially if you can eat it outside in a town as pretty as Banff. read more

Was stoked to see this place, because my friend kept telling me about how awesome the beaver tails were when he visited Whistler. The shop smelled so good when we walked in, and it looked bright and inviting. But the Beaver Bites we ate were dry and stale-tasting, and the strawberry soft serve on top had an artificial chemical taste. So utterly disappointing. Let's not pretend that Beaver Tails couldn't get away with charging $10.00 for a Beaver Tail, so it's refreshing to see that they only charge $6.00, which is entirely reasonable given what you get in a city like Banff. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? My girlfriend and I split a beaver tail right down the middle and opted for half apple cinnamon and half Nutella peanut butter. I thought the Apple cinnamon half was notably better, but neither half really blew us away. This is essentially a high end funnel cake, and while the bread itself was good (how could it not be?) It's made right in front of you and served still warm. The line can get pretty long at times but totally worth the wait. I went to this place 3 days in a row during my 4 day trip to Banff!! Between all of my friends, we were able to try almost every flavor (there's 9). My favorites were: 1. Nutella and banana 2. Skor Cheesecake 3. Killaloe Sunrise ( cinnamon, sugar, lemon) But i recommend trying all the flavors because they are all delicious. They look big, but they are flat so they don't have much depth to them. The crunch on the thing was surprising to me. It had a very nice texture. I topped it with nutella and bananas. Beaver Tails is a must do when in Banff! We had seen many people going here, but didn't stop til our 2nd to last day. You should go here when you first get here, the beaver tails are fantastic. We tried the Apple pie one, the pastry, filling, apples, and caramel sauce are amazing together. We also got a cup of the salted caramel gelato, very very good. The beaver tails take a little while to make so you may wait a couple of minutes. The combo of the ice cream and pastry together is great. We came back the next day and got a plain beaver tail, just cinnamon and sugar, simple but delicious. Desserts come in all shapes, sizes, and varying temperatures but the word on the street was that Beaver Tails were allegedly the "creme de la creme" of desserts to be enjoyed in Banff, Canada. Given I went in with such high expectations, my first Beaver Tail tasted like a big let down. You end up eating the whole pastry because who doesn't love sweets but the last few bites become more of a struggle to finish instead of that craving you get when you finish a dessert and sadly look down at an empty bowl wishing there was more. Their fried dough shaped like a beaver tail, slathered with your sweet topping of choice is strikingly similar to funnel cakes found at state fairs, amusement parks or your average hole in the wall mall eatery. Would highly recommend utilizing their half-and-half suggestion to split the Beaver Tail with two different toppings. Their cinnamon flavor is fairly classic and enjoyable, everything after that is almost unbearably too sweet and would not be properly enjoyed if it covered the entire Beaver Tail. I remember my first was in Ottawa as a child, my uncle nearly had me convinced it was actually our nation's furry mascot's tail beaten down and fried. It also happens to be one of the most delicious snacks you can have in Banff, the only store of the franchise in Alberta. BeaverTails is a Canadian company, specializing in the deep fried dough desserts. Amongst other items like ice cream and sorbets, hotdogs and poutines, you can order up a customized beaver tail or choose from a preset menu. Each order is made fresh, hand-pulled whole wheat (!) dough. Fried and ready in a few minutes. It's honestly one of my favorite things to eat of all time. If I can't make it down to Banff to get one, a special trip to Edmonton's summer carnival (K-Days) is in order just so I can get the street food equivalent of an elephant ear. Or I line up in blistering heat at the Croatia tent at Edmonton's Heritage Days. Nothing is quite the same as a fresh beaver tail though! Crispy and crunchy, yet somehow deep fried without the overwhelming grease factor some donuts can have. Cinnamon sugar is a classic, but you can go nuts and add on extra toppings to your order as well. For those undecided, you can split your beaver tail and make both parties happy! I opted for the lemon cinnamon sugar, and Joe tried the banana chocolate, a combination of fresh banana slices and chocolate hazelnut spread. The shop on Banff Avenue (close to Chaya) does not have any seats although a window ledge is there if you nab it. They're opening up a second location on Banff Avenue, one just wasn't enough for the small touristy town. I really wished they'd open up on at West Edmonton Mall! Where else do you get mounds of tourists? Not only are they expanding within Canada, they're also opening up a location in Tokyo, Japan! Going international with beaver tails! Beaver Tails is apparently the place to go to when in Banff. Place was bumping with a constant flow of people coming in and out. Small joint as everyone has said but lots of benches to sit around outside. My cousin was obsessed about trying one all day so we went after our early dinner and had some dessert. We tried a couple flavours: - Apple cinnamon ($6.43) - Banana chocolate ($6.43) - Original/plain ($5.00) - Coffee ($2.00) Had a taste of all three and they were all pretty good. Definitely hits the spot if your craving some deep fried dessert goodness.
