Heads up, they're only open during the summers. Would recommend keeping up with them on Facebook because that's how they announce when they're coming "out of hibernation", where they'll be, when they can only take cash, when they're closed because of weather or private events, and all the other general updates. Also, if you're planning to park in the immediate area, this part of 9th street is $3 per hour from 8 AM to 8 PM during peak season. Also, a thing to note is that their patio area is pretty open to the elements. There are one or two umbrellas on the table(s) but, during the summer there is little to no shade besides those thanks to the angle of the sun. So during the time when the sunlight is REALLY beating down or when it's raining, people are going to stake their claim on what little there is. If you really want someplace to sit down and enjoy your treats while the patio space is too crowded, go back to the other side of the block where the park is. Or at least, they have benches and trees where out around the Canmore Museum. Old School Bus Ice Cream really does SUPER tasty ice cream while being one/two streets over from Canmore's main street. They also do floats, milkshakes, shaved ice, and canned drinks/soda from what I was told was a local Canmore company (The Grizzly Paw). Super integrated with the local community. They have pamphlets and stuff for new local restaurants and participate in money-raising for charities. So if you're looking for something new to do or visit, drop by to see if they're advertising anything (almost like a bulletin). Overall, if we visit again, this is definitely our list. And I definitely want a cone and MORE scoops next time lol. I had admittedly tried their green tea because I was wondering/testing what kind of flavor it would have, and it was wonderful. They also have shaved ice but we only tried the ice cream. There's a few tables if you wanna sit. Ice cream was average. People working were fine, friendly enough. I don't know if it's because there aren't better options in Canmore, but I wasn't impressed with the ice cream. Got the chocolate peanut butter which was oddly bland and not creamy or flavorful at all, and the rainbow sorbet which had more flavor but is your typical run of the mill artificial rainbow. What a neat ice cream spot. It's in an old school bus as the name would suggest. It's always parked in the same place. They have a lot of unique flavors. We each got 3 scoops in a waffle cone so I tried (in order I liked them the most to least): caramel praline, birthday party, butterscotch ripple, butter pecan, maple walnut, mango. The top 4 were delicious. The bottom two weren't that great. My parents really liked what they got as well. They have a couple of tables outside to sit at an well as a bench. They only take cash and they accept US dollars as well. I wouldn't recommend paying in US dollars though because they still charge you the Canadian price, so you pay more. Such a great spot along the main street of town that gets allot of foot traffic. I love that they fixed up an old yellow school bus to pass out generous scoops of delicious ice cream! 1 scoop goes for about $3, but it looks like 2 scoops. I could've done with a kiddie scoop of my moose tracks, but who am I kidding? I shared my scoops with my guy and I found myself side-eyeing him to dare him to finish it before I did. I hate to be the naysayer here but I thought the ice cream was just okay. Maybe I'm spoiled by more artisan, natural, organic ice cream in San Francisco, but I just wasn't that impressed. Cash only, so minus points for that. If you have US dollars they will take that but at a 1:1 exchange rate (they are making bank on that exchange rate) It's unique and eye catching that they serve the ice cream out of an old school bus. They have a pretty wide selection of flavors that include mint chip, green tea, birthday cake, tiger (licorice/orange) amongst others. The flavors are very artificially colored so if you get the birthday cake flavor you'll look like you ate a Smurf. We got the mint chip, birthday cake and raspberry cheesecake. The portions are huge and 2 scoops is more than enough for 2 people. I liked the mint chip - it was pretty standard green mint chip ice cream. The raspberry cheesecake was good but heavier on the cheesecake part than the raspberry swirl part. The birthday cake was good but a bit too sweet for my taste and probably too much blue food coloring and sprinkles. The texture was soft and creamy but definitely not your artisan, all-natural homemade stuff. You'll get quantity over quality here. Not super unique flavors but if you want pretty standard ice cream at inexpensive prices and big scoops, this will fit the bill. read more
