Finally had the chance to come here and I'm so happy I did…read more Once you drive over the hill entering the parking lot, you see a massive parking lot. On the right side is a huge trap shooting area and at the back of the parking lot is where you check in for the pistol and rifle range. You sign in, read review the rules and pay the fee ($25 per person). From there you'll be assigned a bay depending on what you're shooting. Once you enter the range, you go to your bay and set up. Note that you must have eye protection and ear protection on at all times when you're inside the shooting area. If you shoot rifle, they have stands depending if you're lefty or righty. You can shoot seated or laying down, supported or unsupported. I don't think they allow you to shoot rifle standing up for safety purposes. For pistol, they have steel targets or free paper targets anywhere between 25 to 100 yards. The steel targets at 25 yards is a little far for first time shooters. The steel target is about the size of an average size backpack. So at 25 yards it might seem hard to hit for first time shooters. So I recommend getting a big paper target so you have a better chance to hit the target. The far targets are 100 yards. More meant for rifle, but if you're good with a pistol it's a fun challenge. You can shoot the steel gong, or set up paper targets. The range attendants are very strict about the rules but this is common and expected because safety so important when dealing with firearms. I advise first timer shooters to read and know the rules before entering the facility. There are bathrooms to the back left of the parking lot next to the huge cool shotgun shell structure. What a fun first time here. I'm definitely coming back. Maybe even pursue a membership one of these days.

CCW instructor & competitive shooter here…read more I've been going to Sunnyvale rod and gun club for quite some time now. Some days busy than others so I understand that there can be a wait sometimes. Each event was warranted understandably so. However, today was ridiculous. I arrived with two friends to get them to shoot their guns and offer some guidance. We arrived at 6:45pm got in line and got placed in the waitlist queue. We waited for about an hour and 15 min - we were told that it would be 40mins - then my name gets called I signed in, my friend signed in, then my other friend started having issues with the tablet. It stated it "failed to sign in" About 5min have passed. The range master comes to the tablet he spends 10 mins trying to figure things out, and just took his sweet time. After a total of 20 mins passed the range master just walked away not really giving us an answer. I asked "is there a manual way to sign in?" "In an event the tablet goes down, y'all don't have physical documentation you can use in a situation like this?" The person at the register just looked at me and said "No". You gotta be kidding me. That literally makes no sense. So an hour passed + the staff wasting 20 min, they told us to "call it a night" Simply because their tablet to sign in. Wasn't working. I want to come back. Whenever need to do some testing, zeroing, chrono, this was the place to go. There's always good vibes here, but this definitely put a bad taste in my mouth.

I had a chance today to take the Basic Safety and Marksmanship course with Sgt. Andrew Bowen. In…read moreshort, it was worth every penny. Andrew improved my pistol skills from the ground up. He fixed my stance, my grip, my trigger squeeze, my sight picture and my breathing control. He taught me how fatiguing it can really be to send every round downrange, and more importantly, how to combat that fatigue. My groups went from 12" down to under 6" (at 7 yards) in under 2 hours and less than 200 rounds. I know with more practice and focus on Andrews techniques I can get that group even tighter. I've read the books and watched the videos, but nothing compares to the solid one on one instruction Andrew provides. I can't wait to follow up with his more advanced classes!

Bowen opened my eye and mind to things that were not brought up in my previous basic class. Some gun jams that I haven't heard of and some I have heard of,but haven't seen, and how to clear them . I learned a better stance and better grip that all just made sense. If you are new and serious on learning and improving don't pass an opportunity to get trained by Sgt. Bowen. I am excited to practice what I learned and to move on to tactical training to see what else I can learn and improve on. I also hope to continue to update this review as I work my way through other lessons.

After finally finding someone to sign me in, all he said is wait for them to call your name. No going over safety rules, where to put your things or your what to expect. If something is unclear, you basically need to find someone in charge and ask one of them. Amongst the firing line was a bearded little person with a Nepolion complex and a megaphone berating the shooters about every "mistake" he felt they are making. A guy a few spots to my left raised his hand to ask a question and he yelled at him for turning his head towards him, saying it was an incredibly dangerous gesture. The guy's hand was up in the air, clearly without a firearm in it and that was dangerous? Another guy to my right put his empty magazine in his pocket and he got yelled at too. I heard him saying he would be murdered in real life if he did that and that he needed to drop his magazine on the ground. One of the other range officers had to come him down. I'm not sure if any range safety brief was gone over earlier in the day, but no one who got there at 9:45AM heard anything. Some people were even asking me where to put their guns and equipment. Not sure if the little person with the beard even comprihends that these are his clients that paid him money for a service, because he was acting to me like someone who felt he was doing them some kind of favor. Even at the end of it all we didn't know if we had to stay or if we could go home. They said my safety certificate would get to me by Tuesday. That was late by a few days too and when I followed up, I got no response. If you're looking for terrible customers service, you found it!

So, this year I figured we'd up the game a little and do some archery. Not willing to go out and buy a whole bow & arrow set, the next logical thing was to look around and see if anyone offers lessons. Well, I didn't have to look far, as Bowhunters Unlimited (BU) made it all too easy. The Good: *Just contact them thru their website and they'll put you in touch with a member that offers lessons. We lucked out and were matched with Linda, whom I believe is the VP of BU. She was terrific. Very patient, but stern, with a group of precocious teenagers. *They offer yearly memberships for $40/year for unlimited shooting. *BU is a private club that operates in a closed off section of Stevens Creek County Park. The area is beautiful and a great spot for outdoor activities. *Small paved lot w/ port-o-potties *The lesson was much, much cheaper than you'd think. $150/4 ppl for 90min is a bargain in this area of the world. This price includes the bows, arrows, and lessons. The Meh: *The drive up is very windy. So if you're really carsick, then this ain't gonna be for you. *Cell phone signal is spotty at best. Sometimes you have signal and sometimes you don't. It's very odd. The Ugly: *Bugs! So many bugs! I don't know what it is about this corner of the park, but we were being harassed severely by some kinda fly. Fortunately they don't bite, but imagine trying to focus on shooting while bugs fly around your face. Fortunately, I had some bug spray in the car, so that helped a lot. Conclusion: Fantastic location to do some fun old-timey outdoor activities of pretending to kill things! Cuz, Merikkka...
